While certainly best-known for Bicycle Thieves, Vittorio De Sica’s vast, varied body of work is worth diving into. This June, those in NYC can experience quite a taste of it with four films by the director at Film at Lincoln Center’s Sophia Loren retrospective, immediately followed by the release of the new 4K restoration of Shoeshine at Film Forum. Restored by The Film Foundation and Fondazione Cineteca di Bologna at L’Immagine Ritrovata, in association with Orium S.A. Restoration, the new trailer from Janus Films has now arrived.
Here’s the synopsis: “One of the greatest achievements in the cinematic revolution known as Italian neorealism, Vittorio De Sica’s Shoeshine stands as a timeless masterpiece of trenchant social observation and stirring emotional humanism. In postwar Rome, street kids Giuseppe (Rinaldo Smordoni) and Pasquale (Franco Interlenghi) shine the shoes of American servicemen in hopes of saving enough money to purchase a beautiful horse.

Terry Gilliam has been to Cannes with three of his own films since 1983, but one of his favorite memories of the festival takes him back to that very first time, at the 36th edition, as the co-writer and co-star of Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life. Along with Graham Chapman and the film’s director Terry Jones, he’d emerged from the Carlton hotel’s iconic entrance, then bedecked with promotion for the upcoming Bond movie Octopussy, to encounter a camera crew. Jones started grabbing people at random, shouting, “Who Ees Monty Python???” in a ridiculous foreign accent, and got so carried away that, when they reached the hotel’s famous terrace, he accidentally did it to Gilliam too.
The crowd loved it, and the day only grew stranger. Out on the Carlton’s jetty, they gave an interview to British news channel ITN, with Jones hiding behind Graham...

A muse, a mother, a fashionista, an actor, a rock ‘n’ roll icon — it’s hard to describe exactly why Anita Pallenberg remains such a compelling figure more than a half-century after the captivating blonde sang backing vocals on the Rolling Stones’ “Sympathy for the Devil” and starred in movies like “Performance” and “Barbarella.”
The new documentary “Catching Fire: The Story of Anita Pallenberg” delves into both the beautiful and tragic moments of her eventful life with the help of a treasure trove of home movies and interviews, as well as an unpublished memoir penned by Pallenberg and narrated by Scarlett Johansson. The footage is coupled with interviews of the Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards, with whom she had a significant relationship, their children Marlon and Angela Richards, director Volker Schlondorff, who cast her in some of his films, and her former friends and associates.

Paola Cortellesi’s directing debut, in which she also stars, depicts gruelling domestic abuse before finding its way to startling redemption
Italian actor and singer Paola Cortellesi has been breaking hearts and box office records on her home turf with this directing debut. It’s a richly and even outrageously sentimental working-class drama of postwar Rome, a story of domestic abuse whose heroine finally escapes from misogyny and cruelty through a piece of narrative sleight-of-hand that borders on magic-neorealism, performed with shameless theatrical flair and marvellously composed in luminous monochrome. The film pays homage to early pictures by De Sica and Fellini, and Cortellesi’s own performance is consciously in the spirit of movie divas such as Anna Magnani, Sophia Loren and Giulietta Masina.

In honor of her latest movie, let’s revisit her many awards races, including her first Oscar nomination for “The Power of the Dog.”
Dunst’s first role that brought the actress lots of awards attention arrived in 1994 in Neil Jordan’s “Interview with the Vampire,” starring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. Dunst’s performance as the young outspoken vampire Claudia earned her a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actress, up against Sophia Loren in “Prét-à-Porter,” Robin Wright Penn in “Forrest Gump,” Uma Thurman in “Pulp Fiction” and Dianne Wiest, who won the trophy for “Bullets over Broadway.”

Lovers, fighters … and gangsters? On the centenary of the actor’s birth, we pick out his greatest roles
A minor picture with curiosity value: Charlie Chaplin’s final film as a director, starring Brando and Sophia Loren, a comedy in the style of the Hollywood Golden Age, based on the tall tales of a real-life Russian singer and in fact originally conceived by Chaplin in the 30s for Paulette Goddard. Brando plays an American diplomat who is astonished to find that the Russian countess (Loren) he was charmed by in Hong Kong has stowed away in his cabin on the voyage home. Brando does his best and this method legend was sufficiently in awe of Chaplin to submit to his old-fashioned way of working: acting out for Brando the required line-readings and movements. Certainly, Brando would never again be so submissive with a director.

Sophia Loren is coming to Hong Kong. Well, a restaurant dedicated to the Italian icon is coming to Hong Kong, rather.
Opening in mid-April in the Wanchai district of Hong Kong is Sophia Loren House, the first international outpost of the actress’ burgeoning restaurant empire.
Sophia Loren House has taken over the four-story Woo Cheong Pawn Shop, a Hong Kong heritage building that was formerly the location of The Pawn restaurant. The venue pays homage to Italy of the 1960s and 1970s, the era of Federico Fellini’s La Dolce Vita and also Loren’s heyday as a screen siren. The restaurant is designed by Italian architect Ivo Maria Redaelli, who also designed the four Sophia Loren Restaurants in Italy, and features a great deal of Loren themed art work.

It is not original to observe that despite being about salvation, much of traditional Roman Catholicism seems rooted in pain and agony. Like many children before me, I recall vividly the first shudder that accompanied seeing an idol of Christ graphically bleeding on the cross; and when fundamentalist filmmaker Mel Gibson made his movie about Jesus, it was entirely fixated on the passion (read: torture) this messiah endured. The actual resurrection and salvation, meanwhile, was not even deigned a footnote.
Folks should believe what they want to believe—and there are many beliefs, indeed, in a religion with 1.4 billion souls amongst its ranks—but there remains something positively medieval in certain, powerful corners of the orthodoxy. And director Michael Mohan and star/producer Sydney Sweeney have tapped into that iconography to summon a horror full of mysticism, passion, and, of course, pain. As the mother superior in Immaculate intones, “Suffering is love.

The Oscars ceremony that took place in 2009 remains an all-time favorite for many who watched it, including your humble correspondent, largely because of the thrilling way in which the four acting Oscars were presented: Five past winners introduced the five current nominees for each award. This resulted in massive standing ovations from the audience at the Dolby (even awards show veterans like Brad Pitt and Meryl Streep looked absolutely giddy in cutaway shots); introductory remarks from past winners that left current nominees visibly moved (Anne Hathaway was in tears); and group hugs of the new winners that were akin to welcoming them into an elite fraternity or sorority (see: Kate Winslet).

Welcome to Global Breakouts, Deadline’s fortnightly strand in which we shine a spotlight on the TV shows and films killing it in their local territories. The industry is as globalized as it’s ever been, but breakout hits are emerging in pockets of the world all the time and it can be hard to keep track. That’s why we’re doing the hard work for you.
This week, we make our first trip to Poland, to check out a World War II spy drama. The Bay of Spies draws parallels to the likes of German Oscar Winner The Lives of Others and John le Carré TV adaptations such as The Night Manager. Politically, Poland is a charged place right now. The fact a film noir-influenced story based on real events during the war and with real moral ambiguity is the country’s most talked-about show right now is perhaps no coincidence.

Of the 272 films that have earned lone acting Oscar nominations – meaning they were each recognized in one performance category and nowhere else – a whopping 101 (or 37.1%) accomplished the feat thanks to lead actresses. Whereas just 60 examples have occurred in the Best Actor category, the corresponding female one reached that benchmark in 1991 and is on track to double it less than two decades from now. Its triple digit total has now been intact for one full year, having directly resulted from the simultaneous nominations of Ana de Armas (“Blonde”) and Andrea Riseborough (“To Leslie”).
Although an Oscar bid was generally expected to follow de Armas’s 2023 BAFTA, Golden Globe, and SAG Award nominations, Riseborough very memorably came out of nowhere, having defied precedent by benefiting from an enthusiastic grassroots campaign. While most of the earlier lone Best Actress contenders belong in de Armas’s camp, many align with Riseborough in having pulled off major surprises.

The season 18 Sister Wives tell-all wrapped with a fourth episode on Dec. 17. This season’s interviews were less intense than the previous season’s one-on-one interviews. Still, host Sukanya Krishnan attempted to end the emotional confessionals with a fun question. In part four, she asked several Sister Wives cast members who their celebrity crushes were, and some of the answers surprised us.
Meri Brown has had a celebrity crush on Matthew McConaughey for years
The Sister Wives cast might be celebrities in their own right, but they aren’t above having celebrity crushes. Meri Brown was a bit shy about revealing what star she found most attractive, but she eventually shared his identity. She told Krishnan that she’s liked Matthew McConaughey for many years. Italy has been a regular contender for the international feature Oscar since the 1940s, having won the award 14 times — the most of any country. Four of those winners were directed by Vittorio De Sica, whose 1946 film, Shoeshine, was the first foreign film to be recognized by the Academy with an honorary Oscar. Four years later, his Bicycle Thieves earned the honor. And in 1963, he collaborated with Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni on what would become Italy’s third international feature Oscar winner: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow.
The film is a comedy anthology divided into three parts, following a triad of Italian couples across three regions of Italy: “Adelina” tells of a wife (Loren) who supports her unemployed husband (Mastroianni) and family by selling black market cigarettes in Naples as she tries to stave off being incarcerated for her illegal activity by staying continuously pregnant. The origin of one of Hollywood’s most iconic stars is a story stranger than fiction.
Cary Grant, who appeared in movies including “To Catch a Thief” opposite Grace Kelly, was born Archibald Leach in 1904 to an abusive father in the sleepy city of Bristol, England. While he was a child, Grant’s mother was secretly committed to a mental health hospital and publicly declared dead. The actor only found out she was still alive when he was 31 years old.
Grant is now the subject of “Archie,” a four-part biopic from “Philomena” writer Jeff Pope, made with the cooperation of his ex-wife Dyan Cannon and daughter Jennifer Grant. The series charts the actor’s rise to fame, his struggle with his demons and his relationships with the most important women in his life.

Is this the year of Sandra Hüller?
The German actress is currently starring in not one, but two high-profile projects that might have the goods to carry her through awards season.
Hüller’s versatility is on display in Neon’s Palme d’Or-winning courtroom thriller “Anatomy of a Fall,” where she plays a woman accused of murdering her husband, and A24’s Holocaust drama “The Zone of Interest,” where she plays a woman whose husband was one of history’s most notorious murderers. In the former, Hüller speaks English, with a smattering of French; in the latter, she appears as Hedwig Höss, the wife of Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höss, registering her evil in her native German. The roles couldn’t be more distinctive, and the rare double act is already earning Hüller comparisons to international screen sirens like Ingrid Bergman, Isabelle Huppert and Liv Ullmann.

Piper Laurie, the three-time Oscar-nominated actress known for her performances in The Hustler and Carrie and for her outlandish two-character, two-gender turn on the original Twin Peaks, died Saturday morning in Los Angeles. She was 91.
Laurie had not been well for some time, her rep, Marion Rosenberg, told The Hollywood Reporter.
An Emmy winner who was nominated nine times during her career, Laurie spent three years as a child in a sanatorium, broke free from her original contract at Universal Pictures, once went 15 years without making a movie and starred in the original production — for live television — of Days of Wine and Roses.
In Learning to Live Out Loud, her frank 2011 memoir, she revealed that she lost her virginity to Ronald Reagan and that she had slept with Mel Gibson when she was twice his age. Laurie wrote the book because “my life had many secrets, and it was wearing,...

Menus-Plaisirs Les Troisgros.Industry nerves were jangling back in July when the ongoing strikes by the actors’ and writers’ guilds saw Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers pulled from its opening night slot at the 80th Venice Film Festival. The loss of a high-profile premiere with the film’s star Zendaya in attendance must have flustered red carpet reporters and festival bosses alike: those for whom newsworthiness and movie-star magic are inextricably linked. As the festival itself drew near, it began to look like the spotlight was turning towards the filmmakers—and perhaps even the films themselves. It was hard to keep track, in the weeks leading up to the festival, of which films had received the exemptions from their respective guilds that would allow talent to attend, but for my first full day on the Lido, it certainly looked like business as usual. Over there was Adam Driver, who, from the right vantage point,...

Gold Derby recently hosted two polls about which legends should be honored at the 2024 Golden Globe Awards. Your choice to receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award for film life achievement is Julie Andrews. The top selection to receive the Carol Burnett Award for TV life achievement is Dick Van Dyke. Wouldn’t that be an amazing ceremony if the iconic stars of “Mary Poppins” would both be celebrated on the same night? The only word to describe it would be “supercalifragilisticexpialidocious”!
Both Andrews and Van Dyke have received the Kennedy Center Honors and SAG life achievement awards. Andrews was honored last year with the AFI life achievement award. Van Dyke has been inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame.
Our DeMille poll offered 18 possible choices, and here are the results below:
Julie Andrews (26.39%)
Glenn Close (16.09%)
Sigourney Weaver (9.87%)

Michael Caine (6.01%)

Though she rose to fame thanks largely to her looks, Italian superstar Sophia Loren more than proved her acting chops with a series of international hits and an Oscar win for Best Actress. But how many of her titles remain classics? Let’s take a look back at 15 of her greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1934 in Rome, Loren began appearing in films both in her native Italy and in Hollywood, popping up in several titles that played more to her incredible beauty than her acting chops. That all changed with “Two Women” (1961), a stirring drama from Italian neorealist Vittoria De Sica that cast her as a mother protecting her daughter from the horrors of World War II. The role brought her international acclaim and Oscar, BAFTA and Cannes Film Festival victories as Best Actress, making her the first performer in a foreign language film to win at the Academy.

A highlight of the first weekend of the 80th Venice International Film Festival was seeing Giorgio Armani appear on the catwalk, visibly excited, moved, smiling and proudly satisfied with his work. He then advanced graceful and happy, in his impeccable blue tuxedo holding hands with the model Agnese Zogla.
The moment was experienced by the more than 500 guests at Armani’s One Night Only event, where the world of cinema flocked to pay homage to King Giorgio, with guests including Sophia Loren, who has always been his beloved friend, accompanied by her son Edoardo Ponti, actor Benicio Del Toro, actress Jessica Chastain, and directors Ang Lee, Gabriele Salvatores and Giuseppe Tornatore.
The standing ovation lasted several minutes from an audience composed of numerous couples from the Italian film star system: from Sergio Castellitto and Margaret Mazzantini and Pierfrancesco Favino and Anna Ferzetti to Raul Bova and Rocio Munoz Morales to Kasia Smutniak and Domenico Procacci.

Kelsea Ballerini got “goosebumps” on her first-ever trip to Venice, she tells The Hollywood Reporter.
The singer-songwriter visited the glamorous City of Canals with boyfriend Chase Stokes to attend designer Giorgio Armani’s “One Night Only” event on Sept. 2, which included a haute-couture presentation and party for around 500 guests.
“The pieces themselves were stunning. I really loved the throughline of using the contrast of pretty pastels with black. There were so many looks I was thinking ‘I have have have to wear that!'” she says of the fashion show, which was highlighted by looks featuring diamond shapes and harlequin motifs.
“However, the moment of the night,” continues Ballerini, “was watching Mr. Armani himself take his lap around the runway getting showered with praise and respect — goosebumps.”
