The Netflix special roasting NFL great Tom Brady made onto the streaming charts for the week it premiered — despite it only be up for a few hours of that week.
The Roast of Tom Brady racked up 279 million minutes for the week of April 29-May 5, good for 10th place among original series in Nielsen’s rankings. The special streamed live on May 5, meaning it tallied those viewing minutes in under 12 hours. (With a running time of almost three hours, the 279 million minutes equates to about 1.6 million complete runs of the special.)
Bluey moved back into the top overall spot with 1.18 billion minutes of viewing on Disney+, adding to its total as the most streamed title in the United States so far this year (21.73 billion minutes and counting). Fallout, which had led the previous three weeks, slipped to third overall with 1.08 billion minutes of viewing on Prime Video, while Grey’s Anatomy...

The Netflix effect continues.
The O.G. streamer has seen major viewership success with the licensing of older titles from other producers since last year, when the long-concluded USA legal drama “Suits” dominated the Nielsen Streaming Top 10 for weeks on end. Since then, several library titles have seen similar trajectories.
The newest example of the Netflix effect is “The Judge,” a 2014 film starring Robert Downey Jr. that was streamed for 703 million minutes in its first five days on Netflix. That made it the seventh-most-streamed title of the week of April 29-May 5, holding its own compared to TV titles with much longer running times.
Also notable on this week’s chart was “Dead Boy Detectives,” which rose to become the No. 8 most-streamed title with 699 million minutes watched in its first full week on Netflix after missing the overall Top 10 and instead landing at No. 3 on the streaming originals chart last week,...

The Captain (Hoa Xuande) is our guide through both Viet Thanh Nguyen’s novel and the HBO limited series version of “The Sympathizer,” but he is also a mystery — most especially to himself. A communist spy who is pulled irresistibly towards the height of Western decadence (Los Angeles in the late ’70s) and depravity (a film set in the late ’70s), the goal of the show is to mirror Nguyen’s prose and give the viewer a visceral sense of The Captain’s alienation.
While the flashiest choice “The Sympathizer” makes is Robert Downey Jr. playing all the significant Western figures who attempt to influence The Captain, there are also smaller, subtler tortures within the show’s imagery itself. The cinematography (by “Decision To Leave” maestro Kim Ji-yong and “The Hurt Locker” veteran Barry Ackroyd) continually puts pressure on The Captain through a sense of heat, sickly light, and eyes just beyond the frame.

The transition from good to evil has fascinated writers for centuries. Forcing characters to dance on the line of morality has always intrigued audiences more than two-dimensional characters with simple moral compasses. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is well-known for administering such dilemmas to their viewers through the characters they make.

Be it Kilmonger in Black Panther, Thanos’ noble motivations to wipe out half the universe, or the execution of the Punisher’s justice, it is difficult for fans to condemn some villains when their motivations are so complex. Despite this, there are a few characters that have stayed consistent over the years, even though the law would disagree.
Five of the main six Avengers have managed to always have a strong moral compass, ever since the 2011 film, and these traits have stayed consistent. However, it would seem that their actors have played parts that juxtapose their iconic roles.

One thing that makes every TV show unique is the title. It should be catchy enough for viewers to remember and easy enough to roll off the tongue of fans in any conversation. The Big Bang Theory spinoff, Young Sheldon, hit the perfect spot, while also explaining to viewers what the show was about.
One of the newer TV shows in development on Amazon Prime Video, however, didn't weigh in the way that the show's title will be reminiscent of a completely different show. Young Sherlock, which could easily be called Young Sheldon's successor, is very likely to have some viewers confused.

While Oppenheimer was Christopher Nolan’s first biographical drama to hit the big screens, this wasn’t the Oscar-winner’s first time penning a script surrounding a real-life figure. Before changing the superhero landscape with The Dark Knight, the director had plans to make a biopic about the American aerospace engineer Howard Hughes, for which he even wrote a script.
But as the story goes, Nolan’s passion project never materialized as before the director could make his pitch, Martin Scorsese was already working on Hughes’ biopic, The Aviator. However, it wasn’t all in vain for Nolan, as his experience working on the script for his Howard Hughes biopic came in handy while penning Oppenheimer.

Every month is an interesting one on Netflix, where you can see forgotten Robert Downey Jr. dramas topping the charts alongside beloved animated ogres enjoying a full streaming renaissance. But there's a certain genre of streaming movie that always seems to do well regardless of whether it's actually any good or not: the middling actioner. You know exactly what I'm talking about: Films that no one heard about when they released but seem perfectly primed to scratch that specific itch we've all had when endlessly scrolling through the mounds of media on these platforms and just want to zone out to something mildly entertaining.
Earlier in May, Scott Adkins' UK action thriller "One More Shot" climbed the Netflix charts, while the month prior the service breathed new life into a forgotten Aaron Eckhart actioner. Was anyone eagerly awaiting the arrival of either? Probably not. Did they do well on Netflix?...

The line-up for the new series of Variety’s Actors On Actors has been revealed, with high profile movie performers interviewing each other.
Variety’s Actors On Actors is one of the most delightful series you can watch as a film fan. The central conceit is that two actors sit down for a natter about their work, often going off on tangents, acting as a unique insight into the industry.
Generally, the pairings are quite surprising, with the actors concerned often never having worked together and, in some cases, seeming quite random, but each one is fascinating and, usually, an absolute hoot. You can see Kate Winslet shooting the breeze with Gary Oldman, for example, or Beanie Feldstein with Florence Pugh – we are still waiting for Jason Statham to make an appearence.

Robert Downey Jr. is one of the most successful actors in Hollywood. On top of having an Oscar to his name and being a world-famous celebrity, for many years, he was the face of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There is no denying that the success he achieved as Iron Man has continued to help him, even after his exit from the franchise.

14 years ago, we were all shocked by the new take on Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes detective stories. Created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, it presented the new vision of our favorite detective and modernized the whole story of his exploits.

Deadline reports that Hero Fiennes Tiffin of the After film series has signed on to star in the Young Sherlock series that has been ordered by Prime Video – and to clear up any possible confusion before it can arise: no, this is not a series reboot or continuation of the 1985 film Young Sherlock Holmes, which came to us from director Barry Levinson, screenwriter Chris Columbus, and producer Steven Spielberg. Rather, this is an adaptation of the Young Sherlock series of novels that author Andrew Lane started writing in 2010. That series was a response to the success Charlie Higson was having with his series of Young James Bond novels. Guy Ritchie is on board to direct and executive produce all eight episodes of Young Sherlock‘s first season. Amazon Prime Video has ordered a series based on Andy Lane’s “Young Sherlock Holmes” novels with Hero Fiennes Tiffin set for the lead role, Variety has learned.
Guy Ritchie is attached to direct and executive produce the eight-episode series. It will be a reunion for Ritchie and Tiffin, who recently worked together on the feature “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.” It is also the latest Sherlock Holmes project for Ritchie, as he previously directed two films about the famous detective starring Robert Downey Jr. as Holmes, Jude Law as Dr. Watson, and Rachel McAdams as Irene Adler.

We're back with another MCU rumour roundup and, should these prove correct, the franchise's uncertain future may have come into focus.
Earlier this month, we shared the news that Hawkeye season 2 may be moving forward, with a story inspired by The Raid. In that, Clint Barton and Kate Bishop will reportedly square off with the Avenger's villainous brother, Barney (a.k.a. Trickshot).
Now, Murphy's Multiverse's has chimed in to reveal that "a second season of Hawkeye does indeed seem to be in development and could end up on Disney Plus much sooner than expected."
With the action set in one location, it's possible Marvel Studios can shoot this pretty quickly, with the show presumably eyeing a 2026 release if this report is anything to go by.
Elsewhere in the site's own rumour roundup, they reiterate plans for Robert Downey Jr. to return as Iron Man in the Multiverse Saga.

It took Robert Downey Jr. a while to completely understand the ways of an iconic director – David Fincher.
David Fincher is one of the greatest filmmakers alive today thanks to his incredible eye for detail and dark, intelligent narratives in his films. He began his journey as a director with Alien 3 and then went on to blow everyone away with his 1995 film, Seven. He has also directed Gone Girl, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and Fight Club, a film that is nothing short of a cultural phenomenon across the globe.

However, it is his 2007 release, Zodiac, that remains one of our all-time favorites. The film follows the story of the infamous Zodiac Killer and stars Robert Downey Jr. and Mark Ruffalo along with Jake Gyllenhaal. Now, David Fincher is notorious for doing retakes until the scene reaches perfection.

Robert Downey Jr.’s biggest comeback was also the savior of Marvel Studios. The actor made his MCU debut with Iron Man and it was a hammer on the nail gaining widespread attention from the global audience. Downey’s Iron Man gave the studio an absolute boost propelling it to the road of success.

While the studio lacked faith in the movie and the actor, director Jon Favreau could somehow convince the producer to move forward with the narrative with Downey. Following the success of the movie, there was room for more sequels and Downey’s Iron Man movies came to be one of the most remarkable franchises in the MCU.

Alfonso Ribeiro Shades Tyler Perry In Viral Tweet. (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Alfonso Ribeiro is not looking for any favors for anyone, especially from Tyler Perry. The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is doing just fine as the host of Dancing With the Stars and made that clear in a recent viral tweet.
On Tuesday, May 28, Alfonso Ribeiro shot back at a social media user on X who suggested that actor/director Tyler Perry could “revamp” Ribeiro’s career. Ribeiro said, “I don’t need or ever want that man to do anything for me.”
Tyler Perry and Alfonso Ribeiro do share a professional history. Alfonso Ribeiro directed 12 episodes of the Perry-created sitcom “Meet the Browns” in 2009 and 2010, so it is unclear why he seemingly shaded “The Big Momma House” star in the viral tweet.

For Australian Vietnamese actor Hoa Xuande, the Vietnam War was a compilation of incredibly sad yet impactful stories shared by family members that up until recently, he didn’t fully understand.
But since joining the cast of the HBO miniseries The Sympathizer, based on Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name, Xuande wishes he could have those moments with his loved ones again with a better understanding of what their experiences might’ve been like as well as the atrocities of war.
From Park Chan-wook and Don McKellar, The Sympathizer is an espionage thriller and cross-culture satire about the struggles of Captain (Xuande), a half-French, half-Vietnamese communist spy during the final days of the Vietnam War and his resulting exile in the United States. As Captain keeps himself as a double agent across the 7-episode project, he meets and befriends a variety of interesting characters, four...

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for The Sympathizer finale.] The Sympathizer delivered one last Robert Downey Jr. character in its grueling finale on Sunday, May 26. The HBO Vietnam War satire has been using the Oscar winner to represent the American, patriarchal white male archetype throughout the seven-episode season. This was a narrative devise devised by director Park Chan-wook, and the fifth and final Rdj character in The Sympathizer connected them all together in a way viewers may not have expected. Sandra Oh previously told TV Insider that having Downey, known best for playing Iron Man/Tony Stark — a weapons manufacturer turned superhero — was “bold” and intelligent and “meta.” He plays CIA agent Claude, Professor Hammer, politician Ned Godwin, and Hollywood director Nikos Damianos, all of whom use Vietnamese people for their own gain in their own twisted ways, whether that be profiting off of war through government action or through the Hollywood movie-making machine. [Editor’s note: The following interview contains mild spoilers for “The Sympathizer,” Episode 7, “Endings Are Hard, Aren’t They?”]
In the end, “The Sympathizer” was not a show that kept things simple. An adaptation of Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning 2015 novel, the HBO limited series helmed by filmmaker Park Chan-wook and Don McKellar concludes in a way that reframes the events of its premiere episodes, and eventually arrives at a thesis that helps ease the protagonist’s internal tug-of-war.
According to star Hoa Xuande, putting an emphasis on the “nothing” in the phrase “Nothing is more important than independence and freedom” makes his character The Captain, a Communist spy embedded in the South Vietnamese army, who begins to lose himself when he’s forced to follow that community in exile in the United States, “realize that he’s been fighting for these things that have been out of his reach, that are just ideals that are unobtainable, and that...

Quentin Tarantino is one of the most prolific filmmakers in Hollywood. The maverick director is known for films such as Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, and the Kill Bill franchise. He is known for his particular brand of violent entertainers with a tribute to the films and TV shows he grew up with in the ‘60s and ‘70s.
In 2008, the filmmaker made one of his best-reviewed works Inglorious Basterds. The film saw a group of US soldiers infiltrating Nazi Germany during the Second World War. While Tarantino approached the subject with a revisionist history lens, he reportedly also wrote a segment in the original script that he wanted to turn into a spinoff film called Killer Crow.

There have been multiple instances in Hollywood’s filmmaking industry where actors and directors didn’t quite see eye to eye and the situations ended up in behind-the-scenes fiascos. Well, it seems like Robert Downey Jr. had been in one of those situations, considering how he was reportedly so fed up with his film’s director that he started protesting in his own hilariously genius ways.

For the record, this happened years ago in the late 2000s, before Rdj had even starred in his first superhero movie (Iron Man) but after he had somewhat retraced his steps back into the industry after pretty much falling out due to drug abuse. And, surprisingly enough, the director he reportedly had beef with was the legendary director behind masterpieces like Fight Club: David Fincher.

When Marvel launched its universe with Iron Man, the industry was divided into two eras defined as pre-mcu and post-mcu. Robert Downey Jr. and Jon Favreau changed Hollywood for good and never batted an eye while doing so. [Editor’s note: Spoilers for “The Sympathizer” below.]
Turns out there was a very good reason for Robert Downey Jr. playing multiple roles in A24/HBO’s “The Sympathizer,” which is revealed in the Episode 7 finale. That’s when the versatile actor turns up in a surprising cameo as the Captain’s (Hoa Xuan Nguyen) father — a French Catholic priest, donning a long dark beard — and we learn that his other four character turns are toxic manifestations of the patriarch who disavowed him.
In fact, it’s a revelation to the Captain as well when all of them blend together in his mind as troubling paternal figures during a traumatic flashback. There’s Claude, the pop music-loving CIA operative; Hammer, the gay East Asian studies professor; Ned Godwin, the military vet-turned-congressman; and Niko, the counter-culture film director. They all contribute in a surreal way to the Captain’s identity crisis as a North Vietnamese communist spy and South Vietnamese sympathizer.

After delivering impressive performances in movies like The Impossible and In the Heart of the Sea, Tom Holland hit the big time when he was cast as Peter Parker in 2016's Captain America: Civil War.
He'd go on to star in Spider-Man: Homecoming, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Spider-Man: No Way Home, becoming an MCU veteran in just five years. However, outside of his Marvel Studios work, Holland has struggled.
While he's impressed on the animation side in Onward and Spies in Disguise, Cherry, Chaos Walking, Uncharted, and his first TV series, The Crowded Room, all drew mixed-to-negative reviews.
As a result, it's hard to shake the feeling that, outside of Spider-Man, Holland is struggling to make his mark. In contrast, his girlfriend and fellow MCU actor Zendaya, has received critical acclaim for her work in Dune and The Challengers.

As we reflect on and put together the story of Robert Downey Jr.’s life, we have to agree that his portrayal of Tony Stark actually saved his career. Since the actor went from being a drug addict to one of the biggest stars on the planet, there has not been a better example of a comeback in recent memory.
For eleven years, he played the MCU’s Iron Man, which gave him all the things an actor could hope for: a stable career, exposure to a new audience, and, most of course, plenty of money. However, that does not tell the whole story. It was Downey Jr.’s role in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang that served as his “calling card to Iron Man”.

In the penultimate episode of The Sympathizer, The General’s plans of going to Vietnam ramped up by quite a few notches. Bon decided to join The General’s army to go and reclaim his motherland with his own bare hands. The Captain tried to get him out of the mission because he knew it wouldn’t have a happy ending. Bon was adamant about waging yet another war, and The General was in no mood to back off either. The Captain found out that Professor Hammer was racist and that Ned Goodwin was funding The General’s plans to go back to Vietnam. On top of that, he was unable to digest the fact that Sofia was with Sonny. So, he released all his rage and confusion by killing Sonny. He realized that there was nothing else for him in the United States of America. That was why he...

Spoiler Alert: The following interview contains spoilers for “Endings Are Hard, Aren’t They?,” the series finale of “The Sympathizer” on HBO.
Robert Downey Jr. may have played five different characters in “The Sympathizer,” but he’s not the only actor in the cast who assumes multiple identities.
The limited series follows a North Vietnamese communist spy simply known as the Captain (Hoa Xuande) who’s embedded in a South Vietnamese community in Los Angeles after the war. Duy Nguyễn plays Man, the Captain’s handler, best friend and sole remaining connection to his home country. But for fear of surveillance, the two send decoy letters addressed to the Captain’s fictional aunt. Any real truths must be brief, focused and written in invisible ink. Therefore, when the Captain is lonely and in need of connection, he has imaginary conversations with Man as though he were with him in person.

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for The Sympathizer finale.] The Sympathizer has been slyly teasing the identity of the Commissar since Episode 1, and the finale at last revealed who he is. It also revealed a surprise fifth Robert Downey Jr. character that makes the entire story come full-circle. For most of the season, viewers have been watching the Captain (Hoa Xuande) tell the story through stylistic flashbacks, using his love of American cinema and music to tell the story like a movie. There were occasional cuts to the present day where the Captain was imprisoned in a Vietnamese reeducation camp and being forced to make edit after edit to his confession “script” until the officers, and the unseen Commissar, were satisfied. If you didn’t figure out the Commissar’s identity through the clues peppered throughout earlier episodes, the finale makes it abundantly clear that the Captain has had a hunch about this person’s identity all season long...

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is in dire need for rejuvenation. In an era where ‘superhero fatigue ‘ is the buzz word, if the MCU has to scale the peaks that it once did, it will have to undertake some herculean efforts. Creators will have to think out of the box while retaining the core that made the fans resonate with the movies. It is in this period that Simu Liu’s critically acclaimed Shang-Chi is all set to begin filming after a gargantuan delay in 2025. While some fans would be baffled, it doesn’t come as a shock to many. After all, this isn’t the most delayed MCU sequel out there.
