“We ended on such a high note, we were very proud of the final two episodes and how the series wrapped up,” reflects Tony Shalhoub on the emotions that were involved in revisiting a character he had bid farewell to so perfectly 15 years ago. For eight seasons, the Emmy Award winner portrayed detective Adrian Monk on the series “Monk,” a character who returns in the Peacock original film “Mr. Monk’s Last Case.” The star – who also serves as executive producer – says the whole team wanted to “match that or outdo what we did at the end” of the show, which felt like a “daunting proposition.” Watch our exclusive video interview.
Shalhoub makes his return to the role look effortless, but it was important to the actor that he not play the character exactly as he had when he bid the detective farewell in 2009. He says that he and the rest...

“Monk” is the epitome of the classic blue-sky show. Its mysteries are gripping, but the show’s characters are inviting — always giving viewers a reason to laugh. That’s still the case with Peacock’s reunion movie “Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie.” And yet, there’s something surprisingly dark about the state of obsessive-compulsive detective Adrian Monk when we catch up with him, post-pandemic.
“At this point we find Monk is really in a in a dark, dark place,” star Tony Shalhoub tells Variety‘s Awards Circuit Podcast. “He’s in a deep hole. His team is not really close by and he’s kind of lost his purpose. And (exec producer) Andy (Breckman) presented this idea that Monk was entertaining thoughts of suicide. It hit us hard in the beginning. We thought, ‘geez, we’ve gone dark in the show before, but not this dark!'”

In 2001, Anne Hathaway starred as Mia Thermopolis, heir to the throne and Princess of Genovia, in the American coming-of-age teen comedy film The Princess Diaries.
Her grandmother in the film, reigning Queen of Genovia Clarisse Renaldi, was played by Dame Julie Andrews.

After Monk ended its run on USA in 2009, creator Andy Breckman never stopped taking notes and coming up with movie ideas for Tony Shalhoub’s alter-ego. But nothing ever quite worked out, recalls Breckman on a panel at Deadline’s Contenders Television — that is, until the pandemic “nudged things along for us.”
That’s when Shalhoub and his wife Brooke Adams made a four-minute film that depicted Monk during the lockdown, which helped to get the ball rolling for Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie. The flick, which dropped in December on Peacock, follows the San Francisco-based detective with obsessive-compulsive disorder returning to solve one last, very personal case involving his beloved stepdaughter Molly.
“At first it sounded kind of risky,” Shalhoub said. “We wanted to raise the stakes, we did not just want to come back with episode 126. We wanted this to be more special. We wanted...

After the success of Ridley Scott’s Alien, the world saw a surge in sci-fi movies centered around blue-collar workers finding themselves up against terrifying creatures, usually in a dark, dank, remote setting. Some of these rip-offs were studio affairs, but a majority of them were made for the home video and late-night cable markets, where the cheap sets and shoddy effects weren’t such big deals. Who among us hasn’t enjoyed a low-budget monster flick that was clearly made for the price of a six-pack? 1989 brought us not one but three sci-fi movies that had at least partial inspiration from Alien and its sequel, Aliens. The latter film’s director, James Cameron, brought us his underwater epic The Abyss, which isn’t a horror film but certainly takes some cues from those earlier movies. Deepstar Six was Sean S. Cunningham’s attempt to bring the slasher movie underwater,...

Director: Randall Zink
Mr. Monk’s Last Case Movie Review Out ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
What’s Good: The humor remains fantastic, and the addition of a darker tone makes the film quite unique.
What’s Bad: The mystery itself is a boring one for sure, not the best one in the series.
Loo Break: Clocking 90 minutes, the movie goes by quite fast, so you probably won’t have the need for a break.
Watch or Not?: If you’re a fan of the old series or maybe a fan of Shalhoud after his work in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, this is a must-watch.

Norman Lear was woke before “woke” became a derogatory smear. He was woke before it was briefly appropriated in mainstream parlance as a liberal badge of honor. Before he died on Tuesday at the age of 101, Norman Lear was one of the few people alive who entirely preceded the term, which can trace its origins to as far back as 1931 as a warning among African Americans to stay vigilant for racist threats.
That was also the year that Lear, then a 9-year-old Jewish American boy growing up in Connecticut, experienced the awakening of his own social consciousness, coming across a broadcast from the antisemitic Father Charles Coughlin (considered a progenitor of hate radio). “I started to pay a lot more attention to people who were even more different in the eyes of people like Father Coughlin,” Lear told NPR in 2012.

The legal drama “Suits” may have been the show of the summer, but another beloved USA property is on top now.

And making the 90-minute revival felt like a homecoming for star Tony Shalhoub — who reprises his role as the crime-solving detective with obsessive-compulsive disorder — since they filmed in Toronto.

Plot: Monk returns to solve one last, very personal case involving his beloved stepdaughter Molly, a journalist preparing for her wedding.
Review: Running for eight years on USA, Monk held the title of the most-watched scripted series in cable history until the debut of The Walking Dead. Wrapping up in 2009, Adrian Monk returned briefly in a Covid-19 short showing the Ocd detective coping during the lockdown. Now, fourteen years after the series finale, Monk returns in his first full-length mystery, Mr. Monk’s Last Case. Reuniting the four main stars and a couple of key supporting players, Mr. Monk’s Last Case follows the detective getting back into the groove as he investigates a murder that hits very close to home. Setting up potential future standalone mystery films led by Tony Shalhoub, this is a decent story that plays more like an extended episode of the series rather than a fully realized movie.

Peacock has unveiled the official trailer for Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie.
Featuring Tony Shalhoub reprising the titular role, Mr. Monk’s Last Case will follow the famed detective as he returns for “one last, very personal case,” involving his soon-to-be-married stepdaughter, Molly.
The new trailer opens with a classic moment of endearingly-awkward Monk-ness, as he attempts to be humble after receiving a compliment for his prolific mystery-solving record by saying “I couldn’t have done it alone.” Then, after a few seconds, his commitment to the truth wins out, and he makes the correction: “I could have, but it would’ve taken longer.”
From there, the trailer shows how Monk has adapted to overcome the challenges of the past few years, including the Covid-19 pandemic, which surely caused much distress to the germ-avoiding detective. Watch the trailer below.

One of the USA Network's most beloved television series is "Monk," which aired from 2002 to 2009. A police procedural comedy owing a lot to Sherlock Holmes (but set in 2000s San Francisco), the show followed Adrian Monk (Tony Shalhoub). A detective with crippling obsessive-compulsive disorder (Ocd) and social anxiety, Monk was once a police officer but retired after the death of his wife Trudy. He semi-comes out of retirement years later as a private consultant and that's when the series begins. Thanks to his performance as Monk, Shalhoub won three Emmys for Outstanding Lead Actor In A Comedy Series, and the finale ("Mr. Monk and the End") broke cable ratings records.
In 2020, Shalhoub and his castmates starred in a mini-reunion for Peacock, "Monk In Quarantine." Monk, an infamous germaphobe, goes the extra mile with safety precautions during the Covid-19 pandemic while his friends check in on him over Zoom. Evidently,...

Apple TV+’s hit limited series “Hijack” starring Idris Elba is a nail-biting thrill ride set in real-time. Over the years, there have been many types of hijack films. Besides planes, there have been suspenseful takeovers of ships, trains, subways and even trucks.
“The Taking of the Pelham One Two Three,” from 1974 — avoid the two remakes — is a superb thriller about four men who take over a New York subway car and hold the passengers, conductor and an undercover policeman hostage unless they get $1 million (remember that was a lot of money 49 years ago). I’ve loved gangster movies since I was four years old and saw Humphrey Bogart and Sylvia Sidney in Dead End (1937) on TV, and Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway in Bonnie and Clyde (1967) at the movies (My dad pinched a lobby card for me). Every Friday night, a local NYC station ran old crime flicks on a slot called “Tough Guys.” Bogart, James Cagney, Edward G. Robinson, and George Raft were the faces over the title. Today that might be Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Wesley Snipes, and James Gandolfini.
The gangster and crime genre produced some of the most influential films in cinema history. Mervyn LeRoy’s Little Caesar (1931), William A. Wellman’s The Public Enemy (1931), and Howard Hawks’ Scarface (1932), get a lot of credit for breaking ground in topics beyond criminality, shattering sexual taboos as well as the boundaries of acceptable visual violence. The late “Wire” alum died March 17 of unknown causes. In a new Screen Rant interview published one day before his death, Reddick revealed how the fourth “John Wick” film deepened concierge Charon’s connection to Continental hotel manager Winston, played by Ian McShane.
“We talked about [it] independently, and came to have a backstory that was very similar since we’ve talked about it,” Reddick said of devising a backstory alongside McShane. “But I think we’ve known each other for decades; probably met when he was in Africa, doing some MI6 work, and I was teenager not too well off. And one of us saved each other’s lives. And then he took me under his wing, and I’ve been with him ever since.”
