Bruce Timm is known for having very unique approaches to the characters he brings to life. On top of his innate understanding of comics, he also brings a sense of uniqueness to each of his projects, which has made him one of the best people in the DC Animated Universe. Unfortunately, not everyone can understand his approach very easily.
Bruce Timm’s All-Star Superman
Sometimes, the producer has to fight for his vision or explain it to the actors so that they can perfectly capture what he wants them to do. However, often, even language fails, and no amount of explanation can get the point across.

We mustn’t dwell… no, not today, not on Rex Manning Day. Today marks the 30th anniversary of Rex Manning Day, the fictional day celebrated in the Allan Moyle disaffected teen comedy Empire Records. Rex Manning Day is celebrated to honor the memory and legacy of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, who on April 8th was found dead in his Seattle mansion on Lake Washington Boulevard from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after dying on April 5, 1994.
Directed by Allan Moyle, Empire Records takes place over twenty-four hours in the lives of the young employees at Empire Records when they all grow up and become young adults, thanks to each other and the manager. Dripping with attitude, pining, and real-life drama, Empire Records taps into the struggles of a generation by exploring social pressure, the importance of found family, and the power of music as a healing tool. Written by Carol Heikkinen, Empire Records stars Anthony Lapaglia,...

The 34-year-old British actor Nicholas Hoult kicked off production last week on Warner Bros. Discovery’s next big bet: “Superman” with director James Gunn and actors David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan. The star of “About a Boy,” “Mad Max: Fury Road,” and Hulu series “The Great” recently went on Michael Rosenbaum’s “Inside of You” podcast and talked a bit about preparing for the role of the evil mastermind Lex Luthor.
First, he complimented his new boss Gunn for making the audition process fun. He said he enjoyed the “Guardians of the Galaxy” auteur’s method of “try[ing] things in the moment, just shouting out from the monitors, ‘Say this line. Do this! Do that!’”
Then he added that even though Luthor is better known for his brains rather than his brawn, Hoult has been hitting the weights. “There’s that bit in ‘All-Star Superman’ [the Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely...

In all of Stephen King’s massive catalog, few works are as bleak as his 2010 novella collection Full Dark, No Stars. Rather than supernatural entities, these four dark tales feature human monsters and deal with the horrors that live inside the human heart. Two novellas serve as mirror images of each other, exploring the female response to predatory men. “Big Driver” follows cozy mystery writer Tess Thorne on a mission of revenge against the stranger who raped her and left her for dead. “A Good Marriage” centers Darcy Anderson, a happily married woman faced with a horrifying choice when she discovers her husband’s secret life.
Both novellas were faithfully adapted into feature films in the year 2014 – for better or worse. Premiering on Lifetime, Big Driver tackles King’s rape-revenge story with Maria Bello staring as the vigilante writer and Olympia Dukakis as her literary detective. Ann Dowd and Joan Jett...

Adapted from Trent Dalton’s 2019 novel, Boy Swallows Universe is a sprawling coming-of-age story about a precocious teen, Eli Bell (Felix Cameron), surrounded and raised by a motley crew of outlaws and outcasts in a rough suburb of Brisbane, Australia, in the 1980s. Eli’s loyal older brother, Gus (Lee Tiger Halley), hasn’t uttered a word since he was eight, and their step-father, Lyle (Travis Fimmel), is a small-time heroin dealer. Also milling about town are Slim (Bryan Brown), a convicted murderer, and Teddy (Ben O’Toole), an associate of Lyle’s with a soft spot for Eli’s loving but gullible mother, Frankie (Phoebe Tonkin).
Each of the show’s seven episodes depicts a different chapter of Eli’s colorful adolescence, a structural device that allows Boy Swallows Universe to cover ground at a lively pace. No event is dwelt on too long before, true to the reality of teen life,...

2023 was the year Frasier Crane returned to the small screen following a 20-year break. The "Frasier" revival brought Kelsey Grammer's beloved psychiatrist into the streaming era with a 10-episode series that saw the titular doctor return to Boston some 30 years after he left "Cheers" to star in his own sitcom. That sitcom would, of course, become one of the most celebrated examples of the genre, following Frasier as he started a new life in Seattle alongside his brother Niles (David Hyde Pierce), father Martin (John Mahoney), and their live-in housekeeper Daphne (Jane Leeves).
It was this supporting cast, along with Peri Gilpin as Frasier's talk radio show producer, Roz, that made the show a classic — though, calling them supporting characters isn't really fair. Despite Kelsey Grammer's not-so-modest opinion that his character was the key to the success of "Frasier," Niles, Martin, Daphne, and Roz were equally as important. Sadly,...

It’s Frasier Week at IndieWire. Grab some tossed salad and scrambled eggs, settle into your coziest easy chair, and join us. We’re listening.
Over the course of its 11 seasons, “Frasier” won a slew of Emmy Awards. Actually, it earned 37 out of 107 nominations, including five for guest actors ranging from Jean Smart to Anthony Lapaglia. But somehow, someway, even amidst the glut of gold showered upon Frasier’s cashmere-clad shoulders, the show’s stealth secret weapon never scored even a nomination for her 11 episodes.
“Frasier” fans know there is only one person it could possibly be: The irresistible, indefatigable, and indelible Harriet Sansom Harris as Frasier’s agent, Bebe Glazer. And Bebe was exactly the type of fast-talking snake charmer who could make that alliteration seem not just virtuosic but mesmeric.

Michael Imperioli may be best known for playing Christopher Moltisanti on the TV series The Sopranos, but he has over 100 other screen acting credits and several writing credits (including multiple episodes of The Sopranos). His first writing credit came on 1999 crime drama Summer of Sam (watch it Here), which was directed by Spike Lee… and during an interview for the documentary Ghosts of the Chelsea Hotel (and Other Rock & Roll Stories), Imperioli revealed that he visited a witch and used otherworldly means in an effort to get Summer of Sam into production!
Scripted by Imperioli, Lee, and Victor Colicchio, Summer of Sam has the following synopsis: During the summer of 1977, a killer known as the Son of Sam keeps all of New York City on edge with a series of brutal murders. The philandering Vinny unwittingly almost becomes a victim of the psychopath, and soon he and numerous people in his orbit — including his wife,...

Stand back, Marvel Cinematic Universe. Be gone, DC Extended Universe. The power of The Conjuring Universe compels you!
It may astonish those who aren't horror fans or haven't been paying attention, but 2013's "The Conjuring" has not only spawned two direct sequels, but two entire spin-off film franchises that are still going strong: the "Annabelle" series and "The Nun" films. In fact, the latter's latest installment — oh-so-helpfully entitled "The Nun II" — is due to haunt theaters everywhere on September 8, 2023.
If you can't quite recall where and when we last saw the only married demonologist team in the tri-county area, Ed and Lorraine Warren, or if you're having trouble separating your La Lloronas from your Valaks, fear not! The following will not only get you up to speed with the ghouls, demons, and ghosts of The Conjuring Universe, but it will also lay out the tangled timeline of the entire series in chronological order.

Stephen King isn’t just an author by this point: He’s an institution, a legacy of classic horror stories that capture our imaginations, fuel our nightmares, and speak — when he’s at his best — to our shared experiences as flawed, emotional beings. The best King stories scare so many of us that we all feel connected, and even the worst are usually pretty fun.
King’s books and short stories quickly became hit movies, many of them celebrated in their time, and some flopped so hard that hardly anybody remembers them. Cataloguing every adaptation might be a fool’s errand, so we made some tough choices and decided to focus only on his theatrical releases.
And even then, there are so many King adaptations that it gets tricky. We’re not including the made-for-tv films (which are legion), and the sequels to King’s work rarely have anything to do with the source material,...

Florida Man is a Netflix series created and directed by Donald Todd and starring Édgar Ramírez and Abadía Lee, is a drama in the world of mobsters full of entanglements.
An “American-style” thriller that leaves us the best and the least good of the entertainment industry: the system knows how to create a great production without risking the slightest.
Without being salient, it has all the elements of an 80’s thriller, those that didn’t go down in history and didn’t pretend to, but that gave us so many good moments.
About the Series
A film that does not want to stand out and that, full of desires to achieve in the cinematographic aspect, is born without the taste needed to be outstanding, but as a perfect television product in which good professionals get, without too much effort, “just another day at the office”.

Meet Mike Valentine (Edgar Ramírez), a resourceful guy embroiled in one twisty Elmore Leonard-esque mystery after another. An ex-cop with a gambling addiction, Mike reluctantly agrees to pay off a debt to petulant Philly mobster Moss Yankov (Emory Cohen) by heading to Central Florida to find fiery Delly West (Abbey Lee), Moss’ runaway girlfriend. That task kicks off a set of comedic turns in Florida Man, a seven-episode series peppered with mighty shady characters. One of many complications Mike comes up against in the Sunshine State, where he doesn’t like to admit he’s from, is his father, retired police chief Sonny Valentine (Anthony Lapaglia). “My character’s untrustworthy,” explains Lapaglia. That’s an understatement. “He has been out of Mike’s life for quite a while, but they have a healthy distrust of each other.” Though Sonny tries mending fences, life for the pair is complicated. “Something...

“Florida Man” stars Edgar Ramírez as Mike, an ex-cop with a debilitating gambling problem who owes a lot of money to a Philadelphia gangster named Moss Yankov. "You don't bring your trouble into my neighborhood." Oh yeah this looks properly wild and crazy. Netflix has revealed the full trailer for the series Florida Man, based on the iconic "Florida man" memes. I guess? Or maybe just based on all the endless news stories of Florida people committing ridiculously petty crimes. When a struggling ex-cop is forced to return to his home state of Florida to find a Philly mobster's runaway girlfriend, what should be a quick gig becomes a wildly spiraling journey involving digging up buried family secrets, and an increasingly futile attempt to do the right thing in a place where so much is wrong. The show is "a wild odyssey into a sunny place for shady people." A perfect description for Florida anyway. Edgar Ramírez stars, joined by Abbey Lee, Anthony Lapaglia, Otmara Marrero, Lex Scott Davis, Emory Cohen, Clark Gregg, Isaiah Johnson, Paul Schneider,...

Florida Man series creator Donald Todd says his new Netflix show asks how “Florida Man” became a thing. “[People] laugh at the mug shots and the headlines,” said Todd, “but what’s the story behind the meme?”
Speaking with Netflix’s Tudum, creator/showrunner and executive producer Todd talked about why he’s fascinated by Florida Man memes.
“As I grew up, I never stopped thinking about why Florida is Florida,” said Todd. “Florida is a thin layer of porous crust on top of a hundred feet of water, and it’s maybe a few feet above sea level… it might all sink. So when you feel that everything is temporary, you take what you can when you can get it. A ‘Florida man’ is someone who’s proudly independent and doesn’t live by your code, which means he doesn’t live by any code.”

The term “Florida man” comes from a meme. The joke is that all the unbelievable news headlines that come out of the Sunshine State are all the work of one man, Florida Man, “the world’s worst superhero.” As any Floridian (or ex-Floridian) will tell you, Florida is a special place. Nowhere else in America has the specific combination of traits – warm weather, easily navigable ports, favorable tax laws – that creates the conditions for lunacy to flourish.

"Empire Records" is a movie that not a ton of people saw, but many of us who came up in the late '90s/early aughts remember the 1995 film quite fondly. The movie was directed by Allan Moyle (who will always be my hero for giving us "Pump Up the Volume") from a screenplay by Carol Heikkinen. It centers on a day -- Rex Manning Day! -- in the life of a ragtag group of record store employees as they try to stop their shop, Empire Records, from becoming just another Music Town.
I worked at an independent music store in the early 2000s, one that was doomed to eventually be sold to a large chain. I have clear memories of all of us saying, "Damn the man. Save the Empire!" on more than one occasion. Sadly, there was no saving CD World and we were all soon out of...

Stephen King’s been known to write a doorstop or two, but within the prolific author’s oeuvre are tales that amount to a fraction of “It.” What these novellas lack in page-count, though, they make up for in thrills. Some of the most successful cinematic translations of his work come from this short-fiction subset.

The Emmy landscape has changed drastically in the past two decades. Going in to the 54th Emmy Awards, which took place on Sept. 22, 2002, it was a broadcast network — NBC — that led the nominations with 47. Emmy powerhouse HBO came in second with 38. Several of this year’s contenders for Emmy gold were either nominated or won 20 years ago.

Based on the true story of a lone gunman who killed 35 people in Port Arthur, Tasmania, in 1996, Justin Kurzel’s drama is a complex study of a lethal misfit
At a crucial moment in this quietly harrowing drama from Justin Kurzel, director of Snowtown, Macbeth and True History of the Kelly Gang, a young man walks into a gun shop with a bag of money and walks out with an arsenal of firearms. What’s remarkable is how horrifyingly matter of fact the scene is, with its casual talk of throwing in ammo rounds and “nice” carrying bags. Yes, there’s a slightly sticky moment when the young man reveals that he doesn’t have a licence, but that’s circumvented when he agrees not to register his purchases. So the deal is done; hands are shaken, money is exchanged and lethal weapons are sent out into a world where no one is safe.
On April 28th 1996, a lone gunman killed 35 people and injured another 23 in Port Arthur, Tasmania. More than 25 years later, the aftermath of those events lives on, so that when director Justin Kurzel was first approached about a film on the subject, he was “hoping the script would be terrible” so that he could turn it down.
But having worked with writer Shaun Grant on both Snowtown and The True HistoryOf The Kelly Gang, he knew that wasn’t going to happen. The result is Nitram which, instead of concentrating on the actual shootings, traces the life of the gunman, especially his relationships with his parents and the eccentric woman he lived with, in the years leading up to the incident. Freda Cooper sat down with Kurzel to talk about the challenges that went with bringing the story to the screen and how it hit the headlines in Australia just after filming began.
