Tianna Johnson’s “Obeah” has topped The Brit List, an annual league table of top unproduced screenplays from the U.K.
Established in 2007 and similar to The Black List in the U.S., The Brit List is compiled from recommendations by British production companies, talent agencies, sales companies, financiers, distributors and broadcasters.
The list includes both feature and television screenplays.
Johnson’s urban fantasy drama, which scored fifteen recommendations, tells the story of a woman on the hunt for a serial killer. The teleplay, set in North West London, incorporates indigenous spiritual practices from the Caribbean.
In second place with thirteen recommendations was “Maps” by Jessica Drewett, a sci-fi drama set in an installer mine.
To be included on the list scripts need at least 7 recommendations.
In 2021, 300 scripts were submitted of which 18 received the requisite number of recommendations. Nearly a third were feature scripts. 65% of the list is made up of female writers.

“Obeah” by Tianna Johnson has topped The Brit List, an annual showcase of unproduced screenplays out of the U.K.

In our new series, we look at eight cities where live music has exploded — from legendary hubs like Chicago and Nashville, to rising hot spots like Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Portland, Maine. We also look at some far-flung destinations where the music the music is worth the journey. One of those places is Port Antonio, Jamaica, a formerly sleepy spot that features rum bars, street parties, and some of the best music in the world.

MaryAnn’s quick take… Toilet humor, cars exploding for no reason, random naked boobies, and gay panic… although, weirdly, also lots of awkward, unerotic nearly naked Dax Shepard. I’m “biast” (pro): enjoyed the TV show, but I was like eight then

In 2011, the comedian and actor Dax Shepard made his feature debut with the mockumentary Brother’s Justice. In it, he plays a version of himself as — in the words of Gary Goldstein in the Los Angeles Times — “an impulsive, clueless narcissist on a journey to reinvent himself as an action star.” The plot involves Shepard running around Hollywood trying to raise money to make a cash-grab action movie starring himself. Dax Shepard goes for laughs in this remake of the Us highway patrol series – and fails
Director and star Dax Shepard clearly did most of his preparation for this movie reboot of the TV series in the gym. As a result, his character, rookie motorcycle cop Jon Baker, spends almost as much time posturing in his pants as his does straddling a Ducati. A staggeringly unfunny comedy, the film mines homophobia, accidental decapitation and the objectification of women for lols.

One half of the CHiPs TV series’ iconic duo doesn’t show up in the big screen reboot – and now he’s revealing why.
Larry Wilcox – who portrayed California Highway Patrolman Jon Baker in the 1977-1983 show – does not make a cameo in the new film, although his former castmate, Erik Estrada – aka Frank “Ponch” Poncharello – does.
“It’s a complex issue, but basically, I wasn’t invited to my own party,” Wilcox told Vulture.

Borrowing character names and a few elements from the Larry Wilcox- and Erik Estrada-led television drama CHiPs, Dax Shepard’s remake feels more like a big-budget reboot of his delightful shit-kicking action comedy Hit and Run. His sophomore feature as a director delivers, fittingly, a few sophomoric laughs operating at the same frantic energy level as his previous film. Although its structure is similar to that of a loose Judd Apatow sensibility (which can be quite painful, as was the “extended cut” of the 40-Year-Old Virgin), CHiPs is a buddy comedy that’s more interested in homosocial bonding than the actual mission. The problem is the bonding, as sweet as it is, grows a little tiring and the film is structured so that we’re far ahead of our heroes, and where’s the fun in that?

Let’s be clear. Any attempt to adapt a television series for the big screen is inherently an effort to wring an influx of cash out of an often-dormant property, leveraging name recognition in the hopes that it will translate into solid box office. Rarely is such a move inspired by any real necessity or sharp creative vision, and perhaps this overt disinterest in reviving a beloved show with an infusion of fresh ideas is why we have far more films like Bewitched and Lost in Space and far fewer like Mission: Impossible and The Addams Family, both of which reinvigorated their respective franchises decades after the shows went off the air.
One approach that filmmakers have routinely taken in recent years is to apply a comedic lens to properties like Starsky and Hutch and 21 Jump Street. Chips – the latest film based on a popular TV series – takes a similar route.

There are some stories that deserve to be told and retold - handed down through generation after generation, from campfire tales through to the era of TV and cinema and far beyond. Whether they're related in the pages of a book or projected on a movie screen, these stories speak to the essence of what makes us human: our histories, our friendships, our fears and desires. Even some of the more engaging action comedy capers have to make a compromise, as the success rate in establishing a strong narrative while remaining consistently funny is a a hurdle many a filmmaker has stumbled on. Some thrive in their farcicality and the story becomes something of a side-note, while in others, it’s the comedy that takes precedence, with the narrative working as a mere vehicle for the humour. Dax Shepard’s CHiPS is a rare case, though – for it succeeds in neither.
Shepard plays Jon Baker, a newly enforced member of the Chp (California Highway Patrol) wanting to make his mark, and impress his wife (Kristen Bell) in a bid to save their dying marriage. Threatened with being fired if he doesn’t file within the top bracket of performers, he’s unenthused when meeting his partner, undercover FBI agent Frank Poncherello (Michael Pena...

This comic-ironic remake of the old TV show never quite thrums into life, and contains a few horribly misjudged moments
Here comes yet another addition to the “ironic film remake of a beloved 70s/80s TV series” genre, which is starting to look as dated as the shows it purports to send up. Updating the cops-on-bikes action drama of the same name, ChiPs stars Michael Peña in the old Erik Estrada role of Ponch, a sex-addicted FBI agent who is tasked with rooting out police corruption by going undercover in the California highway patrol unit. There he’s paired up with idiot-savant rookie Jon Baker (Dax Shepard, also the film’s director), whose guilelessness is counterbalanced by a remarkable gift for riding motorbikes. Soon the pair are on the trail of a dirty cop (Vincent D’Onofrio, entirely wasted in a gruff, underdeveloped role), bickering and blowing stuff up as they go.

Warner Bros.’ reboot of the TV series “CHiPs” is the latest mainstream Hollywood film roiling with “gay panic,” or scenes where straight characters are distressed by social or sexual situations involving Lgbtq people. The buddy comedy — set amid the culture of a Southern California police force — seems to endlessly dredge up scenarios where men are confronted with the naked bodies, perceived masculinity and potential desire for other men. Dax Shepard and Michael Pena star as motorcycle cop partners with conflicting personalities: Shepard’s Jon Baker is a sensitive, lean-muscled former pro biker looking for a new career. Pena’s Frank “Ponch” Poncherello is a hyper-masculine,...

It’s hard to pinpoint when Dax Shepard’s “Chips” takes a sharp turn into indefensibly racist humor, but one place to start would be a passing reference to Michael Peña as “the little brown one.” It’s not the only cringe-worthy moment.
It may be unfair to pigeonhole Shepard as endorsing ugly stereotypes, even if he did write, produce, and direct a movie that derives 90 percent of its humor from gay jokes, race jokes, and punchlines about attractiveness that basically amount to a beta version of the pre-Facebook website “Hot or Not.” But they’re all there, in this overblown and completely baffling adaptation of a 1970’s TV series that literally nobody asked for.

No one really asked for a “CHiPS” movie, right? As far as can be determined from the rowdy, laugh-challenged mess that is writer-director-star Dax Shepard’s badges-and-bikes action comedy, baked-in nostalgia for the cheesy ’70s-’80s slab of filler prime time is barely evident. After all, the presumed audience probably wasn’t born when Larry Wilcox and Erik Estrada retired their helmets, shades and Kawasakis. Besides, the original TV show about California Highway Patrol studs was already its own light-entertainment parody of sorts, so apart from keeping the names Jon Baker and Ponch, you approach this “CHiPS” for what it is: one more.

Despite their ongoing feud over the placement of Dax Shepard's beloved La-z-Boy chair in their living room, Kristen Bell and Dax could not have been any cuter at the La premiere of their new film, CHiPs, on Monday. The duo showed off their silly sides while posing for pictures together and mingled with the rest of the movie's cast, including Michael Peña. In the film, Dax (who directed and wrote the script) plays California Highway Patrol motorcycle cop Jon Baker, who goes undercover with Frank "Ponch" Poncherello (Peña) to expose crooked cops working inside their team. The inexperienced rookie and hardened pro are teamed together, but clash more than click, so kickstarting a partnership is easier said than done. But with Baker’s bike skills combined with Ponch’s street savvy it might just work…if they don’t drive each other crazy along the way.

"I'm a tough motorcycle cop. I've got no emotion." Warner Bros has debuted a new red band trailer for the Chips movie, a big screen version of the goofy TV show about California Highway Patrolmen. This comedy is yet another update on barely-remembered, totally cheesy TV shows, like 21 Jump Street, now packed with self-awareness and contemporary humor. Dax Shepard directs himself in the film, co-starring Michael Pena, plus Jessica McNamee, Adam Brody, Ryan Hansen, Vincent D'Onofrio, Justin Chatwin and Kristen Bell. The first trailer made this look like they're borrowing from Super Troopers. This new trailer makes it look like they're borrowing from Point Break. Either way, this really doesn't look good at all. Here's the newest red band trailer (+ poster) for Dax Shepard's Chips movie, direct from YouTube: You can still watch the first official trailer for Chips here, to see even more footage from this movie. On paper, it’s easy to compare Warner Bros. and Dax Shepard’s upcoming Chips reboot to the Jump Street series. Both action movies mined inspiration from a pair of dormant TV series and, in their journey to the big screen, tapped two bankable comedy stars to lead the charge.
But rather than Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill starring as the mismatched leading duo, Chips has set Ant-Man‘s Michael Peña to star opposite Dax Shepard. The latter directs from his own screenplay, and after years spent lobbying for a big-screen reboot, it’s almost fitting that Shepard headlines Warner’s buddy-cop comedy as one half of the California Highway Patrol. Indeed from the all-new red band trailer above, you’ll no doubt discover that Chips touts many of the genre’s hallmarks: a bickering odd couple, corruption within the department, along with the inevitable inside job. But perhaps the...

The new red-band trailer for buddy cop comedy Chips is – naturally – full of automotive chases, pyrotechnics and dirty jokes. The reboot of the six-season television series stars Dax Shepard and Michael Peña.
Peña's FBI agent, Frank "Ponch" Poncherello, is partnered with Shepard's Jon Baker, a struggling layabout who happens to be an ace motorcyclist. Together the two try to capture a ring of corrupt police officers. In addition to player Baker, Shepard wrote and directed the comedy.

The 21 Jump Street reboot opened the door for old school t.v. shows to get the big screen comedy treatment, and the latest project out the gate is CHiPs, which originally ran from 1977 to 1983, with Dax Shepard (also writer and director) and Michael Peña stepping into the boots of Jon Baker and Frank ‘Ponch’ Poncherello of the California Highway Patrol. The first trailer is here, giving us a taste of what this reboot has in store for us. The movie’s target audience probably have no idea the original show even existed, but this first trailer does manage to squeeze in some nostalgia in between all the usual R-rated shenanigans, though the humour seems a bit too focused on Baker’s crotch. It does promise to be silly fun, and, as per usual, Peña could very well be the best thing about it. Released: March 24th...

Because one nostalgic, self-aware movie reboot of a classic television property isn’t enough for 2017, here’s the trailer for CHiPs. Dax Shepard wrote and directed this take on the ’70s show, and assumes on the role of Jon Baker, originated by Liz Lemon crush Larry Wilcox. Shepard constructed a modern, explosion-heavy spin on the buddy narrative—because what else are you supposed to do these days?—in which Michael Peña’s Frank Poncherello is actually an FBI agent working undercover to investigate crooked highway patrol officers. Really, however, Poncherello’s defining characteristic here seems to be a fear of coming into contact with Baker’s dick. Anyway, Shepard’s wife Kristen Bell is also on this ride, as are Maya Rudolph and Vincent D’Onofrio, the latter of whom we’re going to guess is playing a bad guy. CHiPs motors into theaters March 24.

It's more than a little bit tempting to refer to the upcoming big screen adaptation of 80's TV series CHiPs - written, directed by and starring Dax Shepard - as having received the 21 Jump Street treatment. Other than the fact that CHiPs was always a much goofier show than 21 Jump Street the comparison generally holds, too, as both mine similar combination of nostlgia and action-comedy bromance and, most importantly, it would appear that - like the Jump Street films - CHiPs is delivering solid laughs on the big screen. Shepard stars alongside Michael Pena as Jon Baker and Frank Poncherello, a rookie California highway motorcycle cop and an undercover FBI agent investigating allegations of corruption on the force. Cue up all manner of...

I loved watching the TV show CHiPs when I was growing up, and now there's a feature film adaptation starring Michael Peña and Dax Shepard. The first trailer was just released for the movie, and you can tell that they tried to capture that 21 Jump Street movie vibe and humor, but it just doesn't hit that bar. I guess that's what happens when you aren't as insanely talented as Jump Street writers and directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller. Maybe you'll like what you see in the trailer, though! I personally wasn't impressed. CHiPs was written and directed by Shepard, and this is the synopsis:
In CHiPs, Jon Baker (Shepard) and Frank “Ponch” Poncherello (Peña) have just joined the California Highway Patrol (Chp) in Los Angeles but for very different reasons. Baker is a beaten up pro motorbiker trying to put his life and marriage back together. Poncherello is a...

If one crime comedy featuring Michael Peña as a badge-wielding officer that doesn’t go by the books isn’t enough for you this spring, how about another? Following the steps of 21 Jump Street and Baywatch, another long-off-the-air TV show is being resurrected for a new feature film remake. This time it’s the 1970s show CHiPs, which is directed by Dax Shepard, who also writes and stars. Ahead of a March release, the first trailer has now landed.
“My aim was somewhere in the Bad Boys, Lethal Weapon world, Shepard tells EW. “That was my take on it. It’s interesting because it’s definitely a comedy where the show is not, but the stakes are very real and the world is real and the physics are real and all those things are grounded. Insane situations happen but it’s not happening in a satire world or a heightened world.

"What's your job?" "Find the dirty cops." Warner Bros has released the first trailer for a big screen version of the TV show CHiPs, about two California Highway Patrolmen assigned as partners and their crazy antics. Dax Shepard directs himself in the comedy, co-starring Michael Pena, as well as Jessica McNamee, Adam Brody, Ryan Hansen, Vincent D'Onofrio, Justin Chatwin and Kristen Bell.
