After a solid several centuries of non-stop detective stories being thrown at the public, you’d somewhat expect the genre to have exhausted itself. But crime mysteries still maintain their status as the go-to option for those willing to enjoy a story and make their brains work at the same time, and there’s no shortage of new original stories that defy the genre’s laws.
Knives Out Refreshed the Detective Genre
To this day, we remember when in 2019, Chris Evans said “knives out” and started kniving out everyone in the room as if it happened yesterday. But in all seriousness, five years ago, the detective genre wasn’t looking too hot — or at least, not nearly as hot as it does now. Then, Rian Johnson released Knives Out, and the tides turned.

Ever since we first learned the title of Rian Johnson's next Knives Out mystery, Wake Up Dead Man, we've had a sneaking suspicion that Benoit Blanc's latest outing might be an altogether much darker affair than his last, 2022's sun soaked murder-mystery Glass Onion. And if our first look at Daniel Craig's southern sleuther in the upcoming threequel is anything to go by, then we may just be right. Taking to Twitter/X earlier today to commemorate his first day of shooting on the film, writer-director Johnson shared a brooding black-and-white shot of Craig's Blanc suited up, hair down, and holding onto a new hat. Check it out below;
It's certainly not giving Benoit Blanc in his stripy swimming costume living it up on a billionaire's private island now, is it? Sporting long hair, a dapper three-piece suit, and a decidedly forlorn expression, it looks like Blanc...

The first photo of Daniel Craig as Benoit Blanc in Wake Up Dead Man has been revealed, showcasing the character’s new hairstyle.
Director Rian Johnson expressed his excitement diving back into the universe of Knives Out: “We’ve been very lucky with each of these movies to have gathered some of my favorite actors on the planet, and that’s absolutely the case here… They’re also all lovely folks who get along, which is the dinner party aspect of it. When you’re making an ensemble movie like this I think that’s key.”

Benoit Blanc returns in his most dangerous case yet. Production has begun in London on Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, the third film featuring the celebrated, Southern-fried detective created by writer/director Rian Johnson and played by Daniel Craig. The new installment is produced by Johnson and producer Ram Bergman’s production company T-Street.
We first met Blanc in 2019’s Knives Out, when he was hired to investigate the death of bestselling author Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer). In that film, Blanc teamed up with nurse Marta Cabrera (Ana de Armas) to uncover the truth in a twisted case filled with angry relatives, red herrings, and fabulous knitwear.
Blanc’s skills were called upon once more in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, when he headed to Greece to peel back the layers of intrigue surrounding tech billionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton) and an eclectic group of disruptors.

Daniel Craig's Benoit Blanc is looking dapper as hell in this new look at "Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery," Rian Johnson's latest murder mystery that continues the adventures of the private detective after "Knives Out" and "Glass Onion." The topline instant takeaway is obviously that Blanc has much longer hair than he's had in the previous two films, and that new look could potentially signal a new attitude or maybe even a whole new worldview for this character. Could a shaggier-haired Blanc be a bit more laid back and bohemian this time around? Perhaps he's been hanging out with his pal Derol from "Glass Onion" in between movies and taken some life lessons from the amiable slacker.

It’s day one of filming on Rian Johnson’s next Knives Out mystery, Wake Up Dead Man, and the filmmaker has shared a photo of Daniel Craig to prove it.
Daniel Craig is both a good actor and a good wearer of suits. As a reminder, Rian Johnson has shared a photo from the set of Wake Up Dead Man, showing Craig’s detective Benoit Blanc looking dapper in his latest bit of tailoring.
It also looks as though Johnson’s latest Knives Out murder mystery will see Craig sport a rather different hairstyle: longer, cleanly parted, like a blonde Brett Anderson out of 1990s indie rock outfit, Suede.
The photo commemorates the first day of shooting on Wake Up Dead Man, which now features a huge ensemble cast that would put your typical Marvel film to shame. In here you’ll find (deep breath) Josh O’Connor, Cailee Spaeny,...

When the original Knives Out movie was released by Lionsgate in 2019, the whodunnit starring Daniel Craig as the southern P.E. Benoit Blanc, was either doomed to fail or become a smashing success. The latter happened, as the ensemble cast full of big names made Knives Out one of the best films of the year, ending up with numerous accolades and nominations, with many going so far as to claim that it had revived the whodunnit genre. The sequel, Glass Onion, was also well-received, but more because of its political and social messages than for the plot, which was more or less feeble and unworthy of the original. But, what is important is that Glass Onion also featured an ensemble cast, and it seems that the upcoming third movie, Wake Up Dead Man, will also follow in these footsteps.

In 1997, Platinum Studios co-founder and chairman Scott Mitchell Rosenberg came up with a unique genre-mash concept. What if classic Western tropes were infused with a gritty alien invasion storyline?
This idea birthed the graphic novel "Cowboys & Aliens," where gunslingers Zeke Jackson and Verity Jones witness the crash-landing of an alien spaceship during a caravan ambush. The aliens that disembark the ship are not the friendly, benevolent type -- this is a race bent on invading and conquering Earth by destroying everything they set their sights on. Now, it is up to the cowboys to work together with the local natives to defeat the aliens at all costs, even if it means adapting to their superior, futuristic weapons to nudge the odds in their favor.
Although the one-sheet for Rosenberg's graphic novel was always geared toward a big-budget film adaptation, it wasn't until 2011 that the Jon Favreau-helmed "Cowboys & Aliens" was released,...

The series of murder mysteries that began with the 2019 film Knives Out and continued with the 2022 film Glass Onion is set to keep on going with Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, which has writer/director Rian Johnson back at the helm. Johnson and his collaborators are being very secretive about this project right now, but there’s a lot of hype for it – so we figured this would be a good time to start assembling a list of Everything We Know About Wake Up Dead Man. James Bond has remained a fan-favorite franchise through the decades, surviving not only the Cold War era by preying on the ideas of Russian espionage and imminent nuclear war but also adapting to the modern world by reflecting the ways of the 21st-century spycraft through Daniel Craig’s 007. However, the IP always seemed to get one thing wrong regarding its ambitious plots – the necessity of finding relevance in the story.

But without a change in trajectory, Bond would have fallen victim to the age-old disease of mass disinterest incurred due to the repetition of a formulaic plot.
One writer, however, had an idea for a script that could have introduced a Bond film unlike any ever done before.

The James Bond franchise has attained cult status mainly due to its suave and dashing protagonist who has been portrayed by various actors across generations, from Sean Connery to Daniel Craig. But none of these films would have been what they were without the mesmerizing beauty of the Bond girl who has provided the glamor quotient in plenty.

From Ursula Andress to stars like Jane Seymour, Halle Berry, Teri Hatcher, and Léa Seydoux, these actors have provided a lot of sizzle to the narratives over the years. While most of these stars took on the role in their 20s, Italian beauty Monica Bellucci made her Bond girl debut in her 50s in Spectre, thereby being the oldest actor to portray the part. Interestingly, Bellucci was pursued for the role long before Craig took over in 2006.

What are the greatest action movies of all time? It’s a controversial question, isn’t it? Any time any publication or site puts out a new list of what they consider the best action movies of all time, it can’t help but generate a ton of controversy. Nevertheless, we here at JoBlo have decided to throw our hats into the ring with a list we really hope generates some nostalgia among our viewers but also encourages them to seek out the movies on this list that they may not have seen. But first, some may wonder where superhero movies are on this list. Keep your big-budget extravaganzas and intellectual properties! These days, Hollywood actors are breathlessly lining up to join the Benoit Blanc Cinematic Universe. Ever since Rian Johnson singled-handedly revived the big screen whodunnit with 2019's "Knives Out," the mid-budget murder-mystery series has become the hottest destination for rising stars, A-listers, and under-sung veterans of the industry to flex their acting muscles as the various colorful characters that occupy this world. Even the property's shift from the theatrical market to the streaming landscape three years later with Netflix's "Glass Onion" wasn't enough to deter folks from flocking to these movies like they're the next "Dune" sequel.
Following the announcement of Johnson's third "Knives Out Mystery" last month (now officially titled "Wake Up Dead Man"), it's become a daily guessing game trying to figure out who will sign on to match wits with Daniel Craig's sharp-witted Southern sleuth Blanc next.

Any dogged detective knows that you need to do your research. Whether it’s poring over dusty files in a basement library or lurking around corners and dropping from eaves to listen in on whispered conversations, investigation is a crucial part of the job. And writer-director Rian Johnson has done his whodunit homework. Johnson gave the classic murder mystery a modern twist with 2019’s Knives Out, and now he’s back on the case with his Oscar-nominated Glass Onion screenplay. This time, world-famous detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) heads to Greece to keep a close eye on a tech billionaire and his eclectic crew of old friends. It’s very much in keeping with genre grande dame Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot novels — the familiarity of which provides the scaffolding to build a whole new story around.
