Tim Roth is in talks to play political operative Henry Kissinger in Cannes package Kissinger Takes Paris.
Jeff Stanzler is set to direct from his own screenplay, billed as a satire with the announcement drawing comparisons to Wag the Dog. Robin Wright, Mary-Louise Parker, Lucy Hale, David Cross, Jimmy O. Yang, Rob Corddry and Dylan Penn are also in talks to star in the ensemble.
As for the plot, it’s perhaps best to quote the official synopsis verbatim: “The film tells the (mostly) true story of Henry Kissinger – a middle-aged, politically washed-up Harvard professor who, in 1968, travels to Paris at the height of its student protests and the dawn of the sexual revolution. Feeling energized, he crashes the Paris Peace Talks and changes the course of modern history. A few weeks later, Henry returns to America as the second most powerful man in the world – and even more astonishingly…...

Henry Kissinger may have only died in November, but the controversial politician is already set to get the satirical comedy treatment.
Tim Roth, Robin Wright, Mary-Louise Parker, Lucy Hale, David Cross, Jimmy O. Yang, Rob Corddry and Dylan Penn are in talks to star in the feature film “Kissinger Takes Paris,” set during Kissinger’s younger, pre-Vietnam War years.
Roth (“The Hateful Eight,” “Sundown”) will star as Kissinger, while Jeff Stanzler will direct from his screenplay, and Claude Dal Farra and Brian Keady of Bcdf Pictures (“To Leslie”) are producing along with Stanzler. CAA Media Finance and Concourse Media are co-representing domestic rights, and Concourse is handling international rights, with sales launching at Cannes.

David Cross and Bob Odenkirk made headlines in 2022 when they announced plans to reunite for the docu-style Paramount+ comedy “Guru Nation,” in which the “Mr. Show” masterminds were cast as rival cult gurus manipulating the minds of their deluded followers. On a recent podcast appearance, Cross said he believed that their Paramount+ series, which was in early development at Paramount Television Studios, was scrapped because the “marketing and analytics department” rejected it.
Cross and Odenkirk wrote and developed the show, which would have been an eight-episode limited series. He said the show’s pitch ignited a bidding war between four different networks.
“We went with Paramount+, and we wrote up the first four episodes and then a really specific, extensive bible for the last four — all of which we had pitched, like, ‘Here’s the story, here are the characters and here’s how it would work,'” Cross said...

They got their start when McGovern moved west, after a long stint playing piano bars in New York, and linked up with Edenburg and Jackowitz, who were searching for the missing piece in their trio. The first day they sat down together, they knew they had something special, as they wrote their hit song, “Vapin’ in Vegas.”

The number of signees now sits at 492, having more than tripled since Variety first published the April 5 letter, which criticized the attacks on Glazer for being a “dangerous distraction” from the mounting death toll in Gaza while also contributing to the “suppression of free speech and dissent.”
New additions also include Oscar-winning “Anatomy of a Fall” co-writer Arthur Harari, veteran U.K. producer and Oscar winner Jeremy Thomas, “Girls” co-showrunner and co-writer Jenni Konner and “The Hunger Games” writer and director and four-time Oscar nominee Gary Ross. Miriam Margolyes has called on all Jews “to shout, beg, scream for a ceasefire” in Gaza as the Palestinian territory continues to deal with rising death tolls and, according to aid agency Unrwa USA, is facing a “man-made famine.”
The veteran British-Australian actress and activist, who is best known for starring as Professor Sprout in the Harry Potter film franchise, released a video on Saturday via the Jewish Council of Australia, in which she said Israel’s prosecution of its war in Gaza has left her “so ashamed of Israel.”
She added, “To me, it seems as if Hitler has won. He’s changed us Jews from being compassionate and caring and do unto others as you would have them do unto you into this vicious, genocidal nationalist nation, pursuing and killing women and children.”

Billy Magnussen always understands the assignment. Whatever the medium or genre, the actor manages to stand out with an impressive range. He has literally played a Disney prince — twice! — in the film versions of “Into the Woods” and “Aladdin.” He earned a Tony nomination for his role as a dimwitted young lover in “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike” and has stood out in ensemble films like “Game Night” and “The Big Short.”
But Magnussen also excels at playing the bad guy, such as the tech billionaire who installs a tracking device in his ex-wife in “Made for Love” to a Nazi officer in “The Survivor.” But never more deliciously than in “Road House,” a reimaging of the 1989 Patrick Swayze classic. The new version, hitting Amazon Prime Video this week, stars Jake Gyllenhaal as a former UFC fighter who becomes a bouncer at a roadhouse in the Florida Keys.

Struggling to recall the last time the internet seemed like a force for good in the world? Yancey Strickler can cite the exact date: March 13, 2013.
That’s the day that Kickstarter’s co-founder and former CEO Strickler and writer/director Rob Thomas launched the “Veronica Mars” Movie Project on the then-four-year-old crowdfunding platform. Within 11 hours, tens of thousands of “Veronica Mars” fans opened their wallets to quickly hit the $2 million goal to bring Thomas’ low-rated high school detective series starring Kristen Bell as the eponymous teen gumshoe back from the TV graveyard as a feature film, which opened in theaters 10 years ago on March 14, 2014.
“It was just love — that’s what it felt like,” Strickler told IndieWire about being in the room with Thomas when the “Veronica Mars” campaign launched, and the fan-raised funds rolled in en masse. “There was a documentary crew there filming; the cast kept calling us,...

The director of Kung Fu Panda 4 just explained why the Furious Five was absent from the franchise's fourth movie.
The iconic group of Kung Fu Masters was introduced in the very first film in the franchise, made up of Tigress (Angelina Jolie), Monkey (Jackie Chan), Crane (David Cross), Viper (Lucy Liu), and Mantis (Seth Rogen). Since their introduction, they’ve played critical roles in every installment since—until now.
While the group gets a brief mention towards the start of the movie (and one other surprise moment later on), they do not partake in Po’s journey to take down Viola Davis’ The Chameleon.

A new chapter in the “Kung Fu Panda” saga has been unleashed upon movie patrons. This film is accurately called Kung Fu Panda 4 and comes eight years after 2016’s Kung Fu Panda 3. This adventure, however, seems to be less a solid entry in the series and more of an example of the law of diminishing returns as it enjoys its best moments harkening back to earlier films in the series.
Po (Jack Black) faces his most difficult challenge yet as he is told he must retire from fighting as the Dragon Warrior and focus on more spiritual endeavors. For Po, however, this is problematic for two reasons: 1) first, he does not feel qualified to ascend to any sort of spiritual leadership and instead prefers to stick to “kicking butt” and, 2) he must find and train an apprentice to replace himself as the new Dragon Warrior to protect the Valley of Peace.

Review: Kung Fu Panda 4 is pretty standard fare for a new movie in a franchise that’s gone inactive. Watching Kung Fu Panda 4, I couldn’t help but think of Cars 3 or Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol, which were both “passing the torch” sequels that didn’t really work out that way. Cars 3 all but ended the franchise; while Ghost Protocol was so badass, people fell in love with Tom Cruise all over again, making the notion of him passing on his franchise to a would-be-successor (in that case Jeremy Renner) ludicrous. All that is to say Kung Fu Panda 4 does the usual thing for a long-awaited sequel, with the movie designed...

The sequel to 2010’s legendary animated film Megamind was released recently on Peacock to negative responses and extreme criticism. Megamind vs. The Doom Syndicate acted as a sequel as well as a pilot for Peacock’s Megamind Rules! TV show. However, fans of the iconic film were not happy with the resulting product, with the film scoring a lousy 0%.
The sequel has been in the making for over ten years and has infuriated fans as their time has been wasted. The first time Ethan Edenburg, Eric Jackowitz, and Tom McGovern hung out, they wrote a song. It was March 2022, and they were in Los Angeles, toying around with their instruments, when the conversation turned to what it would be like to have a midlife crisis while visiting Las Vegas.
“It’s a Sunday on the Strip. My divorced-ass moved to Vegas,” McGovern started singing as he played piano. “My wife left and took the kids. And it’s a good thing that she did ’cause they were annoying as shit.

Many of us were dismayed to learn that the great Carl Weathers had passed away, especially with him being amid a terrific career resurgence thanks to his ongoing role on The Mandalorian. Of course, he’ll always be best known as Apollo Creed, with Sylvester Stallone (noticeably emotional) saying in his tribute that he could “have never accomplished what we did with Rocky without him.” Indeed, Apollo was integral to the films, with him being the sympathetic, honourable antagonist in the first two films and then a stalwart best friend and mentor in the third film before dying in the fourth. His legacy helped spawn a whole other franchise, the Creed films, which are still going strong to this day.
Nevertheless, there was more to Carl Weathers beyond the Rocky films, so we thought it might be appropriate to look at some of his other iconic parts on JoBlo, which deserve a lot of praise.

The late Carl Weathers only appeared in four episodes of the critically acclaimed and beloved comedy series "Arrested Development," but the impact he had on the series feels much larger than that low episode count might imply. Playing a heightened version of himself -- an out-of-work actor who's obsessed with mooching off others -- Weathers frequently stole scenes out from under the hilarious Tobias Fünke (David Cross), as the hopeless man's acting teacher, most notably in a hilarious interaction that introduced the phrase, "Baby, you got a stew goin'!" into the cultural lexicon.
In a series that featured a revolving door of terrific guest stars, Weathers was one of the funniest and most memorable. According to "Arrested Development" creator Mitch Hurwitz, we have Weathers himself to thank for the direction and tone of his character on the show. In a 2013 interview with Vulture, Hurwitz explained their original idea for including...

We're very sorry to report today that actor Carl Weathers has died at the age of 76. Weathers was most known for his movie career, playing Apollo Creed in the "Rocky" series and Dillon in "Predator".
But Weathers worked in television as well — and I don't mean just his recent run on "The Mandalorian." One of his most memorable appearances came in "The Shield" season 2 episode "Partners." The cop drama follows the Strike Team, an anti-gang unit in Los Angeles led by Vic Mackey (Michael Chiklis), with the narrative twist the team is just as dirty and murderous as the criminals they investigate. "The Shield" has plenty of memorable guest stars, from Melanie Lynskey as a killer of the week in season 2, to Forest Whitaker as the antagonist (not the villain) of season 5.

Carl Weathers is dead at the age of 76. It’s shocking to consider, even though his best-known character, Apollo Creed, in some ways was ultimately defined by his death in 1985’s “Rocky IV.” The franchise went on without him, and ultimately followed his son played by Michael B. Jordan. But for the next 38 years, there was the fact that Weathers was in reality alive, well, in astonishingly great shape, and underutilized.
Now, Weathers has died himself. And given that he was one of Hollywood’s most prominent musclemen of the late ’70s and ’80s, an era defined by fitness-obsessed actors who either were athletes or aspired to be them, 76 feels startlingly young. Especially given how vital and active he was up until the very end, even directing a couple episodes of “The Mandalorian” so good that one wishes he could have, for the sake of that show’s quality, directed more.

You haven't seen the "Pitch Perfect" movies? A-ca-scuse me? That's a reference you'll get when you finally sit down to watch the 2012 comedy set in the world of competitive college a cappella. For the uninitiated, that means making music without the assistance of instruments. It all comes from their mouths!
Oscar nominee Anna Kendrick ("Up in the Air") stars in "Pitch Perfect" as Beca Mitchell, an aspiring DJ who has reluctantly enrolled at Barden University, where her father works as a professor and desperately pushes her to venture out of her comfort zone and actually have what he considers a meaningful college experience. If she still hates it, then he'll let her go to California to follow her DJ dreams.
While at Barden, Beca ends up being recruited by the Barden Bellas, the university's all-female a cappella group led by Aubrey Posen (Anna Camp) and Chloe Beale (Brittany Snow), which...

As part of Variety’s 100 Greatest Shows of All Time issue, we asked writers on our staff to name their favorite cult shows — series that may lack the clout, the following, or the prestige to quite notch an entry on our list, but ones for which our writers have a special fondness. Here are seven shows that are, to us, the greatest.
Alias
So the central mythology, about the mystical inventor Milo Rambaldi, came to little as the show went on. No big deal. On “Alias,” it was all about the ride. That’s meant very literally: Each week, the show crash-landed into an episode-ending cliffhanger. As played by a luminous, game, and utterly committed Jennifer Garner, superspy double agent Sydney Bristow changed her loyalties, her allies, and her wigs. The only constant in her life was chaos, into which a writing team led by J.J. Abrams thrust her week after week.

The Dragon Warrior has returned. DreamWorks has released the trailer for “Kung Fu Panda 4,” set for release on March 8.
The franchise follows a panda named Po (Jack Black), who, in the first film, is fated to become the prophesied Dragon Warrior, the only kung fu master capable of defeating the evil Tai Lung. He is trained by Master Shifu (Dustin Hoffman) alongside fellow warriors comprising the Furious Five: Master Crane (David Cross), Master Mantis (Seth Rogen), Master Monkey (Jackie Chan), Master Tigress (Angelina Jolie) and Master Viper (Lucy Liu).
In the sequels, which were released in 2011 and 2016, Po and friends continue to defend China against its greatest foes while also uncovering Po’s biological roots. Black teased the plot of the new movie at CinemaCon earlier this year, explaining that Po is ready to retire as Dragon Warrior in favor of becoming a spiritual leader. You know the drill. Every streaming service takes certain movies and TV shows off their platform each month as new titles join their libraries. It can be a bit infuriating to realize the show you've putting off watching for months is now about to become unavailable, but it also gives you the best excuse to finally watch it — a ticking clock.
With the holidays approaching, many of us will be stuck indoors with family members desperately looking for a distraction from the awful political talk. What better way to stop the awkward conversation than by suggesting a fantastic movie or TV show before it leaves Netflix? Sure, you can watch a Christmas classic or even a spirited holiday horror movie. But that's predictable and dull. A much better idea is to spend the holidays watching uncle Sir Ridley Scott tell you a story of honor, revenge, and gladiatorial glory. Or...

If the thought of life without the Bluths makes you as blue as Tobias’ body paint, take heart: Arrested Development is still streaming on Netflix. The comedy series was scheduled to leave the streaming platform earlier this year, but a last-minute licensing deal means it’s still yours for the bingeing on its 20th anniversary this November 2. Arrested Development ran for three seasons on Fox between 2003 and 2006, telling the story of the dysfunctional Bluth family: Lucille (Jessica Walter) and George Sr. (Jeffrey Tambor); their adult children, Gob (Will Arnett), Michael (Jason Bateman), Lindsay (Portia de Rossi), and Buster (Tony Hale); their son-in-law, Tobias (David Cross); and their grandchildren, George Michael (Michael Cera) and Maeby (Alia Shawkat). The show ran for two seasons on Netflix between 2013 and 2019 — to diminishing returns. All the episodes of the revival are in the bottom 30 percent of IMDb’s fan ranking. On the other end of the ranking,...

The superpowered Hargreeves siblings (aka The Umbrella Academy) have saved the world three times now and can't seem to stop winding up in an altered timeline, but will they be able to do it again in their last hurrah? The original Netflix series exists in a world where one day in 1989, 43 infants were born at random to mothers who showed no signs of being pregnant that day before. Eccentric billionaire Sir Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore) managed to adopt seven of them and train them to be a part of a superhero faction called The Umbrella Academy. The siblings each have various powers and personalities, but this dysfunctional family finds a way to work together no matter what. After all, the universe depends on them.

If you were an American independent filmmaker in the '90s, you could do a lot worse than casting Quentin Tarantino in a role. Odds are, you were already trying to rip him off anyway — maybe putting him in the movie could bring some of the magic he delivered with 1992's "Reservoir Dogs" and 1994's "Pulp Fiction." Movies like Rory Kelly's "Sleep With Me" let him play himself, riffing on the homoerotic subtext of "Top Gun." But only one movie trusted that the director's acting chops were sufficient to play the role of God. Or something.
That was "Destiny Turns On The Radio," a sprawling and silly crime comedy where prison escapee Julian (Dylan McDermott) returns home after three years spent locked up. He's hoping to make good with ex-girlfriend Lucille (Nancy Travis) and tie up loose ends with others like partner-in-crime Thoreau (James LeGros) and his Pappy (Tracey Walker). Meanwhile,...

Because "Futurama" is set 1,000 years in the future, show creators David X. Cohen and Matt Groening had to invent a sci-fi conceit that would provide an organic reason to include celebrity cameos. Thanks to a special fluid, human heads can be kept alive in jars more or less indefinitely. In the very first episode, the head of Dick Clark hosted a televised New Year's Eve special to ring in the year 3000. Clark played himself. Since then, multiple other celebrities have played their own severed heads, including the Beastie Boys, the cast of "Star Trek," Al Gore, Conan O'Brien, Beck, Lucy Liu, Penn Jillette, and most recently, Bill Nye.
Of course, Cohen and Groening were more creative than merely storing severed heads in jars, and multiple other notable actors have continued to appear on "Futurama" as robots, aliens, space deities, and other sci-fi creatures. John Goodman, for instance, played the homicidal...

As the U.S. surpasses 240 school shootings in 2023, setting the stage for a record-breaking year of gun violence in schools, Sandy Hook Promise (Shp) is launching “Just Joking,” its latest public service announcement (PSA) to underscore how important it is to take threats of gun violence seriously.
The PSA features a lineup of renowned comedians – including Billy Eichner, Wanda Sykes, Margaret Cho, Jay Pharoah, Roy Wood Jr., Caitlin Reilly, David Cross, Iliza Shlesinger and Rachel Bloom – who lend their wit to deliver a sobering message: Threats are not jokes. If you see a warning sign of violence, always say something.
In the PSA, audience members assume that comedians are performing regular stand-up routines and “Just Joking.” However, it is later revealed that what the audience thought were punchlines were actually all real threats made by school shooters across the country – including the shooter at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, TX who...
