Being an international super spy comes with its share of drawbacks, which apparently include upsetting censors around the world. While James Bond has faced numerous censorship struggles throughout his more than 60-year on-screen run, he's often had a particular issue in his home country. For example, the original ending of 1971's "Diamonds Are Forever" was a little too S&m for the British censors, and was initially supposed to depict Jill St. John's Tiffany Case being tied to a bed by the charmingly bizarre Mr. Wint and Mr. Kidd (Bruce Glover and Putter Smith respectively). That was very quickly nixed by UK censors who felt it was a little too kinky even for Bond.
But kink was less of a concern for the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) than violence. In a 2006 interview with Caped Wonder, "Diamonds" writer Tom Mankiewicz explained how "largely, the Brits cared a great...

Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral and lying-in-state last year cost Britain’s government an estimated 162 million pounds (around $200 million), the treasury revealed Thursday.
The state funeral for the late monarch, held on Sept. 19, was the first in the U.K. since that of former Prime Minister Winston Churchill in 1965.
The occasion, attended by world leaders and dignitaries, followed 10 days of national mourning after the queen died at age 96 on Sept. 8 after 70 years on the throne.

Exclusive: Ashley Romans (Y: The Last Man) has been cast as a series regular opposite Ben McKenzie, Melissa George, Michelle Ortiz and Augustus Prew in ABC’s medical drama pilot The Hurt Unit. She replaces Bull alumna Jaime Lee Kirchner who had been originally cast in the pilot, written by Matt Lopez and John Glenn and to be directed by Marc Webb.
According to sources, Kirchner exited over creative differences during production. Her scenes will be reshot with Romans. While unfortunate, recastings are relatively common and a part of the pilot process.
The Hurt Unit follows a highly skilled team of trauma surgeons and nurses led by Danny (McKenzie), a self-made surgeon, who race into the field to treat the patients who won’t make it to the hospital in time. When the sick and the injured can’t get to the ER, the Hurt Unit (Hospital Urgent Response Team) brings the ER to them.

For a long time, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service was the “lost” James Bond film. The sixth in the series, released in 1969, it came out at a time when tastes were changing and the initial Bond-mania of the mid-1960s had arguably peaked. It also didn’t help matters that Sean Connery had left the role following the previous movie, You Only Live Twice, and that producers Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman decided to go with an inexperienced unknown from Australia, George Lazenby, as the new 007.
Although the film did reasonably well at the box office, with 82 million in total receipts, that was still a drop-off from You Only Live Twice and a fairly steep fall from the heights of Goldfinger and Thunderball. Add to that the fact that Lazenby left the series after finishing his one picture—despite being offered a long-term contract—and you have a...

The Los Angeles premiere of “Devotion,” starring Jonathan Majors and Glen Powell, served as both a salute to the legacy and lineage of Korean War heroes Jesse L. Brown, the first African American Navy aviator, and Thomas Hudner, his devoted wingman, as well as a celebration of the familial bonds forged during the shoot.
“This movie, in so many ways, is a family effort,” director Jd Dillard said, introducing the film’s cast and crew before a packed house inside the Regency Village Theatre in Westwood on Tuesday night. “We all moved together like the boys shipping off to war to make this movie.”
Dillard then asked the few dozen descendants of Brown and Hudner in attendance to stand for a round of applause. It’s overwhelming to share these moments with the families, Dillard told Variety on the red carpet, but, he added, “There’s no other way to do it.

The creature feature Elevation, which stars Anthony Mackie (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) and is directed by George Nolfi, who previously worked with Mackie on the films The Banker and The Adjustment Bureau, is already filming in Colorado right now… but don’t expect to see it very soon. In a new report on Deadline, it’s mentioned that Elevation isn’t expected to receive a worldwide release until sometime in 2024. The good news is, the movie has already secured distribution in many territories.
According to Deadline, Mossbank has sold the film to over twenty-five markets. That includes “Signature for the UK, Ireland, Australia and Nz, Metropolitan for France, Idc for Latin America, Vvs Films for Canada, Tripictures and DeaPlaneta for Spain, Mis. Label for Scandinavia, The Searchers for Benelux and Seven. One for Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Prorom and Kino Swiat have taken Eastern Europe and Poland, Phars bought Middle East,...

"On Her Majesty's Secret Service" is a movie that used to be a punchline, and the name of its star, George Lazenby, a joke. Back in the '80s, there were only two "real" choices for best Bond, and they were Roger Moore or Sean Connery. Bringing in Lazenby was like suggesting that Captain Decker could be up to Kirk or Picard standards on "Star Trek." Yet, over the years, and as more Bond films have been released, suddenly it's gaining respect again. By Rotten Tomatoes rankings, it's even a top 10 film!
Part of that reassessment is that Bond no longer feels like a choice between macho Sean Connery and knowingly corny Roger Moore. We've Seen Pierce Brosnan, Timothy Dalton, and Daniel Craig take a crack, and Lazenby's mix of Connery machismo with a bit of Moore-like humor (and a hint of tragedy) now falls better on a spectrum than into a binary.

In 2011, the silver screen debut of Green Lantern landed like a thud instead of soaring like a triumph. The film was dismissed both by critics and wider audiences; one of the more positive reviews was Roger Ebert's middling praise, "['Green Lantern'] intends to be a sound-and-light show, assaulting the audience with sensational special effects. If that's what you want, that's what you get."
Time hasn't been any kinder to "Green Lantern." Star Ryan Reynolds has poked fun at it in both of his subsequent "Deadpool" movies. "Green Lantern" was conceived as the beginning of a larger DC Comics film franchise, meant to rival the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Instead, its hero has been persona non grata on film since. Green Lantern is usually a staple of the Justice League but in both versions of that film, the only Lantern who showed up was a cameo.

While gearing up to reprise the role of his Marvel Cinematic Universe hero Sam Wilson – who has now taken on the mantle of Captain America – in Captain America: New World Order, Anthony Mackie has also taken the opportunity to sign on to star in the post-apocalyptic thriller Elevation. George Nolfi, who previously worked with Mackie on the films The Banker and The Adjustment Bureau, will be directing Elevation from a screenplay by Kenny Ryan and Jacob Roman. The project is described as being a “high-concept, thematically driven action piece set in the Rocky Mountains”. The story centers on

Roger Moore turned 58 while he was shooting his seventh James Bond feature "A View to a Kill." He'd already huffed and puffed his way through action sequences in his previous 007 effort, "Octopussy," but he looked downright spent in this Summer of 1985 offering. It was time for Moore to hand over his Walther pistol, but replacing him would be no small feat. Having occupied the role for 12 years (three more than Sean Connery), Moore had come to exemplify the role for an entire generation, most of whom were born after Ian Fleming had published his final Bond novel. For this cohort, his suave, yet silly characterization was what Bond was supposed to be.
The transition to a new Bond was further complicated by the overall crappiness of "A View to a Kill." From the snowboarding set piece (scored to the chintziest version of "California Girls" ever recorded) to the limp airship...

During the first half of the 1980s, the announcement of every new James Bond film was met with speculation about whether then-current 007 Roger Moore would continue in the role. At that point, Moore did not have a long term contract but negotiated his deal on a film-by-film basis, which sometimes resulted in producer Albert Broccoli’s Eon Productions auditioning new actors for the part as a means of leveraging their position with Moore.
However, by the time of his seventh Bond effort, 1985’s A View to a Kill, it was clear that the 57-year-old Moore was simply aging out of the role. Moore stepped down, and auditions began in earnest for a new Bond to take over in what would become 1987’s The Living Daylights. One of the actors under serious consideration, and who was reportedly the frontrunner with some members of Eon, was New Zealand-based Sam Neill.

After years of increasingly cartoonish shenanigans, producers Albert Broccoli and Michael Wilson got back to 007’s no-nonsense roots with this 1987 entry directed by John Glen. Timothy Dalton makes the first of two appearances as a dour but no-less daring Bond and the plot itself—about a defecting Kgb agent—is certainly more reminiscent of Ian Fleming’s Cold War thrillers than Roger Moore’s cornpone adventures with a Deep South sheriff in Live and Let Die.

With the MCU continuing to dominate cinemas, much talk has been directed at producer Kevin Feige and his ability to maintain a popular franchise of 14 years. But before Feige, there was Albert “Cubby” Broccoli, producer of the James Bond franchise. Since the first Bond feature film, Dr. No, released in 1962, the Broccoli family has remained at the helm, ensuring that the beloved secret agent remains his essential self, even as he keeps up with the changing times.
For that reason, it was a bit of a surprise when, in 2018, Broccoli’s children, Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli (who have managed the franchise since 1995), announced Danny Boyle as the director of the 25th Bond film, taking over from Skyfall and Spectre director Sam Mendes. The director of everything from the blockbuster hit Slumdog Millionaire to offbeat classic Trainspotting, Boyle seemed like an...

Peter Yates’ excellent war-movie follow-up to Bullitt landed in the wrong year: the beautifully produced and directed action thriller was barely seen in America. Royal Navy mechanic Peter O’Toole swears vengeance on the U-Boat commander who sunk his ship and murdered its entire crew. Locals in a Caribbean backwater help him to strike back: he must first teach himself to fly an airplane. With support from Horst Janson, Sian Phillips and the great Philippe Noiret, it’s a wartime suspense nail-biter with a little manic obsession thrown in as well. Indicator’s extras feature the great editor-director John Glen, who relates the exciting story of the filming on location in Venezuela.

While Daniel Craig’s celebrated extended occupancy as star of the James Bond franchise has come to a poetic end with the recent release of No Time to Die, conversations about his replacement are rampant. Yet, with the field of candidates being more demographically open than previous vacancies, speculators might overlook the possibility of a more conventional—white and British—Bond, like, say, superstar Henry Cavill. Thus, the arrival of a deepfake video with Cavill swapped in as Bond is opening some eyes.
Deepfake/VFX artist StryderHD has provided a simulation of sorts for a prospective Henry Cavill James Bond tenure with a new video that places The Witcher and Man of Steel star into 1987 outing The Living Daylights over the countenance of Timothy Dalton. Indeed, the video—which further cements the eerily-realistic nature of shockingly-accessible, rapidly-improving deepfake technology—effectively demonstrates how seamless of an aesthetic transition the role of Bond would be for Cavill.

Not only is the 25th James Bond film “No Time to Die” the last 007 adventure thriller starring Daniel Craig, it’s also the first one directed by an American: Cary Joji Fukunaga. The 44-year-old filmmaker won the Sundance dramatic directing award in 2009 for “Sin Nombre,” was the first Asian-American director to win an Emmy for directing in 2014 for “True Detective” and earned a Peabody in 2015 for “Beasts of No Nation.”
He joins other cutting-edge filmmakers to direct Craig as Bond including Oscar-winning English director Sam Mendes (“American Beauty”) who helmed 2012’s “Skyfall” and 2015’s “Spectre” and indie German filmmaker Marc Forster (2008’s “Quantum of Solace”), who had directed Halle Berry to an Oscar for 2001’s “Monster’s Ball” and Johnny Depp to a nomination for 2004’s “Finding Neverland.”

James Bond film cameraman and director who masterminded action shots for Pierce Brosnan and Roger Moore
Arthur Wooster, who has died aged 91 after suffering from dementia, was hired by the director John Glen to bring scenes of daredevil action to the screen as second unit director on all the James Bond movies of the 1980s. This followed a career mostly spent shooting documentaries, including a groundbreaking 3D film of the Queen’s coronation.
Glen, a film editor on some early productions that Wooster worked on as a camera operator, knew the qualities that he could bring to supply thrills and spills. “He was prepared to fly in fast fighter aircraft, ski, mountain climb, and he was a terrific underwater cameraman,” said Glen.

Ed Harris’ ‘Westworld’ Turn Was A Perfect Late-Career Move For One of Our Best Actors — Career Watch
Welcome to Career Watch, a vocational checkup of top actors and directors, and those who hope to get there. In this edition we take on Ed Harris, who’s doing what he’s always done: owning character roles in film, theater and television.
Bottom Line: Harris has an iconic masculine American gravitas. The camera loves him and you can count on Harris to deliver a character’s emotional spine with subtle and sturdy grace. That’s why this hard-working actor never falls out of demand. And he seemingly can do anything, whether stalwart hero (John Glenn in “The Right Stuff” or the Mission Control voice in “Apollo 13” or “Gravity”) or contemptible villain (see “The Firm,” “Enemy at the Gates,” “Swing Shift,” or “The Rock”).
Director Peter Weir (“The Truman Show,” “The Way Back”) once told me that shooting Harris is “spiritual, a man that has a past and regrets,...

Henson), Dorothy Vaughn (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monae) served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit. This stunning achievement restored the nation’s confidence, turned around the Space Race between Russia and the U.S.A., and galvanised the world. The visionary trio crossed all gender and race lines to inspire generations to dream big.

The passing of Sir Roger Moore at 89 marks the first James Bond to do so. And the response from one of my sons was telling: “James Bond can’t die — he’s immortal.”
That sentiment will be shared by many Bond fans, particularly the generation that grew up with Moore in the ’70s and ’80s. Moore, who embraced the lighter side of Ian Fleming’s superspy, was also the most enduring, making a record seven franchise movies: “Live And Let Die” (1973), “The Man With The Golden Gun” (1974), “The Spy Who Loved Me” (1977), “Moonraker” (1979), “For Your Eyes Only” (1981), “Octopussy” (1983), and “A View To A Kill (1985).”
While Sean Connery defined Bond as uber-cool and free-spirited (he enjoyed killing as much as shagging), Moore redefined him as devil may care to disarm the baddies. The first Bond to hail from London, Moore’s Bond wasn’t in it for the spying, he was...

What is it? A professional woman and her oddball father dance around their complicated relationship, both in and out of costumes.
Why buy it? Family dysfunction is a longtime staple in cinema, but no film this year captured it with such humor, warmth, and wisdom as Maren Ade’s third feature. Even at 162 minutes our time with Ines and her oddball father feels far too short as their journey of discovery becomes one we don’t want to see end. There’s an honesty here — yes, even with subtitles — about the way we see ourselves through our loved ones...

All hail Queen Cookie Lyon of the Empire, whose return from winter hiatus was also a pleasing return to form for Fox's flagship musical drama.
I generally enjoyed Star's first season, despite it being maligned by many critics.
But Empire's spring premiere was a reminder that its little sister show is just that: a little sister who has a lot to learn from her more experienced elder.
Even in its weakest moments, Empire manages to remain addictive thanks to its charismatic performers, catchy musical numbers that would fit right in on pop radio, and of course, enough drama to fill several daytime soap operas.
"Sound & Fury" stuck to that tried-and-true formula. The result was an hour of television that never ceased to entertain, full of moments both hysterically funny and intensely emotional.
On Empire Season 3 Episode 10, Lucious announced his new musical project, Inferno. A fitting name for what is being...
