The Tham Luang cave rescue, which saw 12 members of a Thai youth soccer team and its 25-year-old coach rescued from a flooded cave after being trapped for 18 days, was destined to become a Hollywood film. The combination of dangerous weather, human ingenuity, and international cooperation was the kind of story that most screenwriters can only dream of coming up with themselves.
Much like the rescue that inspired it, “Thirteen Lives” is a complex work of technical mastery. At IndieWire’s Consider This Brunch, director Ron Howard, editor James D. Wilcox, supervising sound editors Oliver Tarney and Rachael Tate, and composer Benjamin Wallfisch participated in a panel moderated by IndieWire’s Jim Hemphill. They broke down the work that went into the complex shoot, explaining that getting the details of Thai culture right was as important as all the technical specificity of recreating the rescue. Most notably, much of the film is in the Thai language.

Watching “Thirteen Lives, Ron Howard’s new docudrama, is a lot like having deja vu all over again — all over again. It’s the third film in four years based on the seemingly impossible rescue of 12 trapped children and their soccer coach from a flooded cave system in Thailand in 2018, and although it’s extremely competent, it fails to add a new perspective to the story or a distinctive approach to its telling.
Hot on the heels of Tom Waller’s 2019 drama “The Cave” and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin’s award-winning 2021 documentary “The Rescue,” Howard’s film stars Viggo Mortensen and Colin Farrell as Richard Stanton and John Volanthen, two highly experienced cave divers who traveled to the Tham Luang Nang Non cave after an unexpectedly early start to monsoon season trapped 13 people deep in its recesses, behind incredibly long, narrow, dangerous underwater caverns.

When Colin Farrell heard that his Thirteen Lives co-star Viggo Mortensen wanted to do the film’s grueling underwater scenes himself rather than rely on a stunt double, he couldn’t resist diving in behind him.
“I couldn’t have Viggo take all the glory,” Farrell joked to The Hollywood Reporter on Thursday night at the premiere of the Ron Howard-directed film. “I might have to blame Viggo for that decision but, you know, in for a penny in for a pound. If Viggo’s in, I’m in.”

The most haunting frame in Ron Howard’s Thirteen Lives shows a huddle of bicycles, hurriedly deposited along the metal fence leading into Tham Luang Nang Non cave in northern Thailand. They belong to the 12 soccer players (between the ages of 11 and 16) and their 25-year-old coach, who decided to go exploring one muggy day in late June 2018. What the group thought would be a brief post-practice excursion on familiar terrain turned into an 18-day nightmare. Hours after the team entered the underground karstic cavern, it flooded.
Most people know the story of the mission to rescue the soccer team, even if they’re hazy on the details. The news galvanized the international community and drew a captivated, sympathetic audience. Thirteen Lives is not the first attempt to tell the tale. In 2019, Tom Waller premiered his uneven docudrama The Cave at the Busan International Film Festival.

Prime Video has released the first trailer for the ripped-from-the-headlines drama “Thirteen Lives,” Ron Howard’s upcoming film about the 2018 Tham Luang cave rescue.
In June and July 2018, the members of a junior football team were trapped for 18 days in Thailand’s Tham Luang Nang Non cave, after heavy rainfall flooded the cave system and blocked their way out. As the team – who ranged in age from 11-16 years old – and their coach remained trapped for weeks, the situation attracted global interest and an international rescue team was assembled to locate them. Howard’s film will chronicle the events of the rescue, focusing on the efforts of the divers to save the trapped team members.

When it seems he has been marked out for assassination he tries to reconnect with past colleagues to discover the reason for his sudden targeting, suspecting a clean-up job is in progress. With the net closing in and past crimes coming back to haunt him, it is not until he re-connects with Felix (Javier Bardem) and past girlfriend Annie (Jasmine Trinca) that events take a deadly turn.

Chicago – If you’re going to see a Sean Penn action movie, I guess “The Gunman” would be appropriate. As he and the filmmakers inject some reality in the usual motivations, the puzzle pieces don’t connect well and in the end are not that interesting. That is not to say that the film is bad.
Rating: 3.0/5.0
Sporting a body that he doesn’t mind exposing as shirtless while in his fiftysomething status, Penn is a thinking man’s action hero, part assassin and part humanitarian. It’s rather interesting that he kills someone Lee Harvey Oswald style, but after that the story devolves into a vague revenge on that hit, seemingly seven years later, yet with the same ripples over Sean’s muscly form. There are some good moments, including a booby trap that needs to be reactivated, but overall the movie almost dares you not to care, and the female lead follows suit.

Chicago – There were basically two careers for Pierre Morel, before he directed the mega-hit “Taken,” starring Liam Neeson, and afterward. The French-born cinematographer, camera operator and now director is releasing “The Gunman,” an action film that stars Sean Penn. Like “Taken,” the motivations for the action are based in the real world, and “The Gunman” travels to Africa, London and Barcelona on his way to redeeming his soul.
Morel has had an adventurous career, in both European cinema and in notable films, beginning with his days as a camera operator on “The Truth about Charlie” (2002), “The Dreamers” (2003) and “Before Sunset” (2004). He was the cinematographer on “The Transporter” (2002) and Director of Photography on “Love and Other Disasters” (2006). His breakthrough came in 2008, when he directed “Taken.” The film resonated with audiences, and allowed his career to move into a new direction.

There used to be a time when nothing was more cringe-worthy than a middle-aged action hero. Remember Roger Moore smooching Bond Girls 30 years his junior in the twilight years of his 007 reign? Or Sean Connery trying to recapture the glory days next to Catherine Zeta-Jones in Entrapment? That was then and this is now.
The slightly creaking older leading man is now a sizeable mini-industry in itself, primarily thanks to Liam Neeson's Bryan Mills in the Taken series. Beyond that Denzel Washington had The Equalizer, Kevin Costner had 3 Days to Kills and every action icon you remember from the '80s united for The Expendables.

There have already been a couple of trailers for Sean Penn’s swerve into Liam-Neeson-in-Taken-style action thrillers with The Gunman, courtesy of the franchise’s own Pierre Morel. Here comes the third example ahead of the movie’s arrival in March.Penn plays Jim Terrier, a former special forces-type still haunted by the things he did when he was on active duty. And one particular mission is itching at his conscience, a job that was supposed to help people, but ended up more in tragedy than triumph. So when he decides to find out what really happened, he becomes the target of his former fellow shooters and bosses, with the likes of Mark Rylance, Idris Elba and Javier Bardem clouding the picture with different degrees of sinisterness. Ray Winstone, his old mucker, and his girlfriend Jasmine Trinca are probably going to regret getting involved. With a script by...

After handing out the award for Best Picture last night, Sean Penn is back today in the secondm quick trailer for The Gunman, the latest thriller from Taken director Pierre Morel. Penn just happens to be getting some flack today for saying "Who gave this son of a bitch his green card?" when he handed an Oscar to Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, but the filmmaker knew it was a harmless joke. However, Penn certainly isn't messing around in what could be a whole new phase to his career. However, not every aging actor can follow the same trajectory as Liam Neeson did, though it's sometimes entertaining to see them try. Watch? Sean Penn: Honorary César goes Hollywood – again (photo: Sean Penn in '21 Grams') Sean Penn, 54, will receive the 2015 Honorary César (César d'Honneur), the French Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Crafts has announced. That means the French Academy's powers-that-be are once again trying to make the Prix César ceremony relevant to the American media. Their tactic is to hand out the career award to a widely known and relatively young – i.e., media friendly – Hollywood celebrity. (Scroll down for more such examples.) In the words of the French Academy, Honorary César 2015 recipient Sean Penn is a "living legend" and "a stand-alone icon in American cinema." It has also hailed the two-time Best Actor Oscar winner as a "mythical actor, a politically active personality and an exceptional director." "Everything I write has a precedent in truth."
That Sky Atlantic's Fleming opts to open with this particular quote from the James Bond author is, intentionally or not, deeply ironic.
In actual fact, Fleming bears very little resemblance to reality - the script by John Brownlow and Don MacPherson takes huge liberties with the truth, using only the bare bones of Ian Fleming's life story to prop up a glamorous and glossy piece of escapism.
Fleming may have seen himself as a James Bond figure, but the reality was very different - Fleming then is the author's life story as he perhaps would have liked it told. This is an action-packed take on his life - packed full of romance and dramatic incident. This is a world in which Ian Fleming looked like Dominic Cooper.

Dominic Cooper plays Fleming -- Ian Fleming -- in BBC America's new miniseries about the James Bond creator "Fleming: The Man Who Would Be Bond." Directed by Mat Whitecross ("The Road to Guantanamo," "The Shock Doctrine") and written by John Brownlow ("Sylvia") and Don MacPherson ("The Avengers"), "Fleming" tells the tale of its title character's own path from playboy to Naval Intelligence officer during World War II to the author of "a spy story to end all spy stories." The miniseries premieres on BBC American on Wednesday, January 29th at 10pm and in addition to Cooper ("The Devil's Double") also stars Rupert Evans, Samuel West, Anna Chancellor and Lara Pulver. Fleming is a televised mini-series biography based on Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond. Dominic Cooper plays the title character, and as you'll see in the teaser, the series is going to link Fleming's life with his super spy creation. Fleming was not only an author, but he was also a Navy intelligence man who had some spy experiences of his own. This looks like it could be a great series!
The series was directed by Mat Whitecross (The Road to Guantanamo) from a script written by John Brownlow (Sylvia) and Don MacPherson (Entrapment). Here's a description of the series:
"Fleming takes a no holds barred look at Ian Fleming, the man behind the James Bond legend whose real life was as exciting, eventful and sexually charged as his famous creation. Dominic Cooper (The Devil’s Double, An Education, The History Boys, Mamma Mia) will play Ian Fleming,...

Dominic Cooper ("Captain America: The Winter Soldier," "The Devil’s Double") stars as a suave real life spy (and author) in BBC America's new miniseries about Ian Fleming, the man who created the James Bond novel series loosely inspired by his own life. "Fleming: The Man Who Would Be Bond" offers a no-holds-barred look at Fleming's thrilling and titilating life as a wealthy, pleasure-seeking charmer turned Word War II Naval Intelligence officer who took part in an outrageous counter-intellgance mission against the Nazis that would later inform the Bond franchise. The four-part coproduction, which will be set in the war-torn yet wild and permissive society of 1940s London, is directed by Mat Whitecross ("The Road to Guantanamo") and written by John Brownlow ("Sylvia") and Don MacPherson ("Entrapment"). The cast includes Lara Pulver ("Sherlock"), Annabelle Wallis ("The Tudors"), Lesley Manville ("Another Year"), Anna Chancellor ("The Hour") and Samuel West ("Hyde Park on.

In case you haven’t yet heard, Sky Atlantic and BBC recently announced they would be throwing together a four-part biopic on the early life of James Bond writer and creator Ian Fleming. The character of James Bond is an iconic one and is very close to the hearts of many, and not just in the UK where he originated. Who can say they have never seen a James Bond film? Or played one of the many 007 video games? And let’s not forget the many novels Fleming wrote starring Bond. They are, after all, the genesis of everything we’ve come to associate with the name Bond. So of course a biopic makes sense. I’d almost venture to say it’s necessary. And now I would like to report Annabelle Wallis is joining the cast of this biopic.

The Bond franchise is as big as it’s ever been. Last year we got to see one of the best Bond films ever in Skyfall and the 50th anniversary of the super-spy was commemorated by countless museum exhibits, books and the excellent Bond 50 Blu-ray set. This means that not only is 007 here to stay, but he’s more financially lucrative than ever before.
With that in mind, it’s only natural that interest in his creator, Ian Fleming, is at its peak. To capitalize on this interest, a four-part miniseries titled Fleming, which will star Dominic Cooper in the titular role, is in the works by U.K. television outlet Sky Atlantic. The series will be written by John Brownlow and Don Macpherson and directed by Mat Whitecross.
Starring alongside Cooper will be Annabelle Wallis as Muriel Wright, a woman whom Fleming had an affair with and may have inspired the Bond-girl archetype.

With the success of Skyfall in the past few months, grossing over $1bn. around the globe, the interest in Ian Fleming’s creation is clearly showing no signs of slowing down after all these years. And now it looks like the man himself will soon be making his presence felt on the small screen, with Sky Atlantic giving the green light to a four-part biopic, Fleming.
Variety are reporting that the rising young star Dominic Cooper (The Devil’s Double, Captain America: The First Avenger) has been cast in the titular lead.
And Deadline follow it up with a report saying that Annabelle Wallis (The Tudors, Pan Am) will be starring as Muriel Wright, a woman with whom the author had an affair, and who is thought by some to be the original inspiration for the renowned ‘Bond girl’.

Dominic Cooper ("The Devil's Double," "Captain America: The First Avenger") is set to play Ian Fleming in Sky Atlantic's four-part biographical miniseries about the author and creator of James Bond.
Currently titled "Fleming," the story is set during WWII when Fleming was hired by British Naval intelligence as part of its undercover campaign against the Nazis.
These wartime experiences provided the inspiration for his British spy character who first appeared in the 1953 novel "Casino Royale."
Like his creation, Fleming was a maverick and a hedonist, a alcoholic womaniser with a taste for finer things.
Mat Whitecross will helm from a script by John Brownlow and Don Macpherson. Shooting will take place in the U.K. and Budapest later this year.

Columnist Don MacPherson has posted a thoughtful piece on his Eye on Comics blog indicating the falling Us dollar may bring about the elimination of separate Canadian pricing.
He cites Strange Adventures’ Calum Johnston, reporting, “Both Marvel and DC are thinking of removing the Canadian cover price to comic-book periodicals.”
Marvel Comics spokesman Arune Singh clarified conflicting statements in an e-mail today to MacPherson saying Canadian pricing won’t be dropped from its books, only from its periodical publications. “For the time being, Canadian prices will remain on Marvel collections,” he said in an e-mail.
Comics Pro president Joe Field of Flying Colors Comics tolds MacPherson, “I believe there are conflicting reports because the issue of whether to continue putting Canadian cover prices on periodical comics is still unsettled. What one publisher may do another may not follow,” he said Thursday. “The dialog happening now will lead to some resolution.
