Benedict Cumberbatch and Gaby Hoffmann liken their new Netflix limited series, Eric, to being about a parent’s worst nightmare.
“It is a fable about the cost of losing sight of what is important, and that is costly to the child within us and the children outside of us that we’re responsible for in the world,” Cumberbatch tells The Hollywood Reporter in a joint interview with Hoffman.
Created and written by Abi Morgan (Shame, The Iron Lady, The Split) and directed by Lucy Forbes (This Is Going to Hurt, The End of the F***ing World), the six-part series tells the story of Vincent Anderson (Cumberbatch), one of New York’s leading puppeteers and the creator of a hugely popular Sesame Street-esque children’s show called Good Day Sunshine, who struggles to cope with the disappearance of his 9-year-old son, Edgar (Ivan Howe).

While Stranger Things has announced an animated spinoff and is gearing up for a fifth and final season, a new drama set in ‘80s America has hit Netflix. It’s got monsters, it’s got kids in peril, it’s got a bike and no mobile phones, and it couldn’t be more different.
Created and written by Abi Morgan who penned heart wrenching series River, as well as true life dramas The Iron Lady and Suffragette, Eric stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Victor, a puppeteer on a popular kids’ show whose son Edgar goes missing. He is convinced the way to bring his son home is to create a real life version of the monster Edgar was drawing and get it on the show. It has been a while since Netflix dropped a good period show. This time it was all about life and times in New York during the 1980s, when the city was on the verge of massive redevelopment in the hope of uplifting the homeless. Around that time and before, the crime rate was high, and homophobia was widespread. The rampant corruption in government bodies and the police wreaked havoc in people’s lives. Abi Morgan, the creator of the Netflix original Eric, talks about everything mentioned above, along with the racist attitude towards the African American population in the city.

Who was Edgar Anderson?
Edgar Anderson was the young child of Vincent Anderson and Cassie. Edgar was a sensitive kid who had his father’s talent for coming up with creative puppets for the show. Vincent was the producer of the puppet show for children named Good Day Sunshine.

Who is the real monster in Eric? Is it really the big, blue creature trudging around the streets of ’80s New York? Or is it something more insidious bubbling up inside the man who makes him?
In Eric, the limited series created by BAFTA and Emmy Award winner Abi Morgan, monsters are manifestations of fear. For Vincent, Benedict Cumberbatch’s floundering father, husband, and puppeteer, his demons — nurtured by his childhood neglect and exacerbated by his deteriorating mental health and addiction — manifest as a 7-foot-tall, furry hallucination. His name? Simply, Eric.
First sketched by his 9-year-old son, Edgar (Ivan Howe), Vincent conjures Eric, both in his mind and later in his workshop, to help bring Edgar home after he goes missing on the way to school. In writing the series, Eric was born from Morgan’s love of “magical realism and the imaginative...

Exclusive: Global TV and film studio Sister is gearing up for a string of projects to hit the small and big screens and today might well see the launch of its most daring.
Netflix’s Eric about a desperate father battling his own demons on the streets of 1980s New York as he searches for his missing nine-year-old son features Benedict Cumberbatch and a custom-made seven foot puppet, which is visible only to Cumberbatch’s character, the flawed Vincent. Abi Morgan’s six-part series ties together themes of belonging, addiction, loss and police brutality in a familiar setting. It was described as Sesame Street meets Taxi Driver by one British reviewer, although Sister creative chief Jane Featherstone compared it in scope and theme to Steven Spielberg’s Et.
Speaking exclusively to Deadline, Featherstone said the show is testament to the Chernobyl and This is Going to Hurt studio’s commitment to taking a talent-first approach.

What monsters hide in the darkest corners of our minds?
Eric, the emotional thriller from playwright and screenwriter Abi Morgan and director Lucy Forbes, and starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Vincent Anderson, explores the concept of both physical and psychological monsters. For Vincent, the successful, yet troubled creator of an ’80s children’s show Good Day Sunshine, the brooding monster lurking around every corner is both. He’s also big, blue and white, and goes by the name Eric.
But Vincent’s real life is far more frightening than the imaginary beast that haunts him. His 9-year-old son, Edgar (Ivan Howe), goes missing in the gritty streets of 1985 New York City — where structural inequity has led to an addiction epidemic...

The real monster in Eric, the emotional thriller from playwright and screenwriter Abi Morgan, isn’t a big, blue beast. It’s something much more sinister.
The series, starring Benedict Cumberbatch as a puppeteer named Vincent looking for his missing young son in ’80s Manhattan, explores the scourges of structural inequity, the AIDS epidemic, white collar crime, and addiction terrorizing the city.
“This is a drama and a quest of a man who goes in search of his son and goes on that journey deep into himself, but also deep underground into the underbelly of New York’s economic underclass, which has been ignored, abused, and corrupted,” Morgan tells Tudum.

Benedict Cumberbatch is finally back on the small screen with an original mystery drama miniseries created by Abi Morgan. Struggling with substance abuse Vincent convinces himself that he will be reunited with Edgar with the help of a seven-foot-tall puppet created by his son before he disappeared.
Eric is too many things at once sometimes it’s true crime, sometimes it’s a detective thriller, sometimes it’s social realism, and the rest of the time it’s just Vincent hallucinating a seven-foot-tall blue monster and somehow all of it works. In a fascinating interview, Gaby Hoffmann, who plays Vincent’s wife Cassie, shares insights into the making of this emotional thriller set against the gritty backdrop of 1980s New York City. Plot: Vincent, one of New York’s leading puppeteers and creator of the hugely popular children’s television show, ‘Good Day Sunshine,’ struggles to cope with the loss of his son, Edgar, becoming increasingly distressed and volatile. Full of self-loathing and guilt around Edgar’s disappearance, he clings to his son’s drawings of a blue monster puppet, Eric, convinced that if he can get Eric on TV then Edgar will come home. As Vincent’s progressively destructive behaviour alienates his family, his work colleagues, and the detectives trying to help him, it’s Eric, a delusion of necessity, who becomes his only ally in the pursuit to bring his son home.
Review: The idea behind Eric, as depicted in the trailer for the series, is a fascinating concept. A man driven to the edge of sanity after the disappearance of his son bonds with an imaginary monster created by his child to rescue him.

Traditional law enforcement partners or unorthodox private investigator team-ups (or a mix of the two) are a beloved TV staple, regardless of whether the detective story is based on a real-life case or even in a supernatural setting. Given the popularity of this genre and the ubiquity of these types of stories, adding a new spin to the favored format is tricky. Fortunately, Eric creator Abi Morgan defies this challenge, offering a fresh perspective beyond the missing child case at its center. While the depiction of 1980s New York may not break the mold in its portrayal of a city in disarray, the approach to the overlapping conflicts and the exploration of mental health sets this series apart — even when it overstuffs the narrative.

The new Netflix miniseries Eric asks one of the universal questions: What if Jim Henson was an emotionally abusive drunk, his son went missing in mid-Eighties New York City, the investigation involved crooked cops and a queer nightclub and an underground encampment for the unhoused, and Henson began hallucinating conversations with his newest Muppet as a way to cope with all of this?
You know, that old chestnut.

Benedict Cumberbatch is back on the small screen. Eric is an original new mystery surrounding the disappearance of a nine-year-old boy; the real mystery, though, is how anyone convinced Netflix to make this show at all. That's not to say Eric is bad — in fact, it's one of the most original Netflix Originals in some time.
Mixing true crime and social realism with hallucinations of a giant blue monster isn't an easy sell, but BAFTA and Emmy winner Abi Morgan deftly weaves in Vincent's delusions, folding in everything from homelessness and systemic racism to police corruption and the AIDS epidemic in an organically realised vision of '80s New York. At times, there's almost too much going on, as if Eric is two shows in one, swinging between family drama and cop thriller on a dime. It's refreshing for a Netflix series to pack...

Eric releases on Netflix on May 30, 2024.
A six-episode limited series starring heavyweights Benedict Cumberbatch and Gaby Hoffmann will be available on Netflix at the end of May. Abi Morgan created and wrote the series. She is known for her incredible work on films like Shame and The Iron Lady and her Emmy-winning writing on The Hour. The series follows a set of parents who are struggling after their son is kidnapped on his way to school.
Set in New York, Eric replicates some of the incredible work of past crime-thrilling series from Netflix, such as Mindhunters, Griselda, and Ripley. The often dark tone of the series brings a nice twist with the introduction of Eric. Eric is a character that Vincent and Cassie’s son Edgar had drawn. The larger-than-life monster is brought to life after Edgar’s kidnapping, bringing a much-needed comedic aspect to the series.

From the looks of “Eric,” Abi Morgan has cooked up a stirring psychological thriller for Netflix. And for her latest limited series, the writer of Steve McQueen‘s 2011 film “Shame” returns to the Big Apple, but this is a much different NYC than that film.
Set in the 1980s New York strewn with corruption, racism, elevated crime rates, and the AIDS epidemic, “Eric” follows Benedict Cumberbatch‘s troubled puppeteer Vincent as he takes matters into his own hands to try and find his missing son, Edgar.

Benedict Cumberbatch regularly draws rave reviews for his acting work and has appeared opposite many big names. His work in the upcoming Netflix series Eric opposite a big blue monster puppet got him particularly emotional though, the star shared in London on Thursday.
“We had this fantastic operator Olly and his team creating this incredible life-size — for a monster — thing,” he said in a surprise appearance on stage at the Next on Netflix showcase in central London. “It was fantastic. Those guys really know what they’re doing. And there was so much humor in what he was doing, which totally might not work through the whole piece, but at times, it’s going to be great. And he was very inventive.”
Cumberbatch was touched by the hard work going into the fluffy monster. “I literally cried the day I realized what he was doing, which must have been about four months in.

Gillian Anderson and Rufus Sewell have revealed they both said “absolutely not” when first asked to play Emily Maitlis and Prince Andrew in Netflix feature Scoop.
Speaking via video link at the See What’s Next Netflix event in London, Sex Education star Anderson said she thought she would “undoubtedly fail” if she took on the role of the BBC interviewer, who achieved worldwide acclaim for the interview that preceded the downfall of the prince.
“The opportunity to play her was a privilege and was daunting,” added Anderson. “She is a formidable character and journalist, and an incredibly impressive woman. So when first asked to play her I said, ‘Absolutely not, it’s too hard, she’s too amazing and everyone knows her too well and I will undoubtedly fail’.”
Sewell, meanwhile, said he didn’t accept the role until he had “worked on it on my own for a little while.
