Production has wrapped on a new documentary Best Served Cold from writer director Eric Zaldivar and we have your very first look at the project, premiering the first trailer right here, right now. Centered around a seldom-seen then buried American crime action film from 1977, David Berlatsky's The Farmer, the doc will explore the many ups, downs and huhs, during production. And because The Farmer is a story about a returning combat veteran getting caught up in the local crime scene the doc pivots towards the Vetsploitation sub-genre. Apart from interviewing everyone still around associated with The Farmer, Zaldivar also interviewed scribe Paul Schrader (Rolling Thunder) and David Morrell, the Canadian-American novelist who created the character Rambo with his debut novel back in...

If you want to enjoy some often very good and often very bad action movies, the "Rambo" franchise is for you. And if you want to watch the strange and often disturbing trajectory of America's political core over nearly 40 years of cinema, the "Rambo" franchise is also for you. By accident or design, Sylvester Stallone's famed action series contains multitudes. They're macho, violent, ridiculous one-man-army movies. They're also propaganda, apologies for propaganda, and then propaganda again. They demand popcorn, and a crowd ready to hoot and holler. But also analysis.
But few film franchises outside of "Fast and Furious" have titles as confusing as the "Rambo" movies, which defy common logic and may have you, the John Rambo newbie, wondering if there's a trick to watching these things. Honestly, the key is to watch them in order of production. It's the only way to appreciate the series' loose continuity and,...

There's a confusing narrative surrounding 1982's "First Blood." Amid the mayhem of its bloody blockbuster sequels, the film either gets misremembered as a straightforward action flick, or is claimed to be a deep exploration of the psychological effects of war on returning soldiers. But the adaptation of David Morrell's 1972 novel is both.
As his franchise took off, Sylvester Stallone's John Rambo would evolve (or devolve?) into a more stereotypical action hero, cutting down entire armies with belt-fed machine guns over the course of four sequels. Stallone even thinks "Rambo 4" is his best action film. But in "First Blood" the character is more multi-faceted. A Vietnam vet who finds himself at odds with the society he believed he was fighting for, John Rambo doesn't directly kill anyone once he runs afoul of a hard-hearted small-town Sheriff and his deputies. Instead, he flees into the Washington State wilderness and...

Bringing "First Blood" to the screen was just as grueling an ordeal as the events of the film itself. Now remembered as one of the best action movies of all time, the 1982 film cemented Sylvester Stallone's status as one of, if not the biggest, action star of the '80s. Its guerilla warfare action was buttressed by a script, adapted from David Morrell's 1972 novel which explored the lingering effects of the Vietnam war on Stallone's combat veteran, John Rambo. That socio-political consciousness would fade as a franchise emerged in the wake of "First Blood," but the initial movie remains a singular example of an action film going beyond the standard bombast and spectacle of the genre. It just took some serious effort to bring it to fruition.
The movie sees Rambo take on an entire Sheriff's department, the national guard, and state patrol in the woodland of Washington state.

Severin Films is bringing out the big guns and starting 2023 with a bang, exclusively telling Bloody Disgusting this afternoon about the first two releases they’re bringing to the new year.
On January 31st, Severin Films unleashes two definitive action releases: Violent Streets: The Umberto Lenzi/Tomas Milian Collection includes Almost Human, Syndicate Sadists, Free Hand For A Tough Cop, The Cynic, The Rat And The Fist and Brothers Till We Die. January also brings the North American debut of the 1981 Australian action classic Attack Force Z, starring Mel Gibson, Sam Neill and John Phillip Law.
Violent Streets: The Umberto Lenzi / Tomas Milian Collection: Italian director Umberto Lenzi had recently completed a landmark string of kinky gialli with Hollywood outcast Carroll Baker. The timing couldn't be better for Sylvester Stallone to conduct a tell-all interview with The Hollywood Reporter reflecting on his career and offering insights into the personal bouts he's gone through. Stallone is in full promotional mode to hype his new starring role in Paramount+'s "Tulsa King" from "Yellowstone" co-creator Taylor Sheridan. The Hollywood legend also has a reality show about his home life in the works. Still hustling after all these years, Stallone seems to have retained the same undying spirit he carried within him during the intense struggles and obstacles he endured and overcame to get "Rocky" made.
Moving from the classic underdog story that helped define the character pieces of the 1970s, Stallone moved into the Reagan era of the 1980s with a relatable, survivalist story about a forgotten Vietnam veteran by the name of John Rambo. Based on David Morrell's engrossing novel, "First Blood...

In 1982's "First Blood," Sylvester Stallone stars as John Rambo, a Vietnam War veteran who single-handedly goes to war with the fictional small town of Hope, Washington. Though it's not stated in the movie, it's obvious Rambo suffers from a severe case of post-traumatic stress disorder, which is accentuated by flashbacks of being tortured as a prisoner of war during the scene in which the local officers arrest and torment him in jail. These flashbacks prompts Rambo to go into survivalist combat mode.
Based on David Morrell's 1972 novel of the same name, the movie is a compelling commentary on the damaging effects Vietnam had on U.S. soldiers who felt mistreated upon their return home from the war. "First Blood" is a perfect mix of action, storytelling, and emotion, which is why it's my favorite action film. Sadly, I can't say the same for the 1985 sequel, which follows the...

Last month, we learned that Lionsgate is funding a horror film based on the novel Creepers (pick up a copy Here) by First Blood author David Morrell. At the time, it was said that Skylan Brooks (The Darkest Minds) would be one of the film’s cast members – but Deadline reports that Brooks is no longer involved with the project. Taking over the role he was going to play is Shane Paul McGhie, who is best known for playing the role of Landon in After and After We Collided. (McGhie then passed the role over to Chance Perdomo for After We Fell.)

A new David Morrell novel is getting the movie treatment — and this one doesn't feature any scheduled appearances by drifter John Rambo. The character John Rambo has appeared in five Sylvester Stallone films, and during his heyday as an '80s action icon, he even had his own animated series and toy line. However, if "First Blood" director Ted Kotcheff had gone with his original plan, Rambo might have been a one-and-done.

Quentin Tarantino only has one movie left to make before he retires, and he has one idea he knows would make for a slam-dunk good movie. That idea involves casting Adam Driver as Rambo in an adaptation of “First Blood.” Tarantino said on “The Big Picture” podcast during his “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” book tour (via /Film) that his “First Blood” would adapt David Morrell’s 1972 novel of the same name and not have anything to do with remaking Sylvester Stallone’s 1982 movie.

Back in 2011, Mortal Kombat 9’s Dlc run came to an end with the first downloadable guest character in the franchise’s history, the classic slasher Freddy Krueger. Many other famous movie characters have followed suit, including Leatherface, Predator, the Xenomorph from Alien, RoboCop, and the Terminator.
Now it’s John Rambo’s turn. The First Blood protagonist will hit Mortal Kombat 11 alongside Rain and Mileena. While we thought Rambo’s teaser announcement trailer from earlier this month would be all we’d see of the action hero in the game, we’ve learned that Nothing Is Over! Nothing! You Don’T Just Turn It Off!
Sorry.
Although the character won’t be available until Nov. 17, NetherRealm Studios has released our first look at Rambo in action in the fighting game. This gameplay trailer shows Rambo like you’ve never seen him before:
First off, hearing Sylvester Stallone reprise Rambo in video game form is wonderful.

The rumors were true! Rain, Mileena, and John Rambo will indeed be the next – and possibly final – three Dlc characters added to Mortal Kombat 11. They’re debuting in the game as part of a new update for the game called Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate, which hits platforms on Nov. 17.

The Justice Department is seeking a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction to block the book’s release, but also wants the judge to force Bolton to direct proceeds for the book to the government for the time being.

The Annihilators is a Spring 1985-lensed action film with lots of action and zero excitement. Coming on the heels of Ted Kotcheff’s masterful 1982 Vietnam-themed film version of David Morrell’s 1972 novel, First Blood, which itself spawned several lifeless sequels including the latest and critically reviled Rambo: Last Blood a mere 37 years after the superior original.. The admittedly low-budget and bargain-basement Annihilators uses a familiar theme to string together several long-winded and ultimately soporific action set pieces that consist primarily of master shots with very little intercutting and close-ups, but not before we get a credit sequence which sets the appearance of onscreen names to the sound of machine gun fire. Clever! The 1980s were a time of teen sex comedies, Freddy Krueger nightmares, and action films. The superior examples of the latter, Mad Max 2/The Road Warrior (1981), Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), and Escape From New York...

Julius Avery will follow up Overlord with a superhero film (of sorts).
Just before underrated WWII horror movie Overlord opened to a disappointing box office in November last year, the film's up-and-coming director, Julius Avery, was tapped by Fox to direct a Flash Gordon movie, with Kingsman's Matthew Vaughn set to produce. However, as Overlord bowed and Disney started the long process of acquiring Fox, the project was shelved (in favor of an animated version with Taika Waititi involved), and Avery started looking for something else to do.
That 'something' is now Samaritan, which Aussie Avery will helm for MGM, and Deadline confirmed this week that it'll star a post-Rambo: Last Blood Sylvester Stallone. The forthcoming thriller will centre on "a young boy who is out to discover if a mythic superhero, who vanished 20 years earlier following a tragic event, is still alive." We assume the superhero in question is Mr.

Rambo: Last Blood is “not everyone’s cup of tea.” Or so says this newly-released promo for Sly Stallone’s latest (and potentially final?) big-screen appearance as the buff, gruff Vietnam war vet.
Embedded below, this stinger arrives after a pretty turbulent weekend for Last Blood, after critics lambasted the fifth Rambo movie as a cheap and gory revenge fantasy. Perhaps more troubling is the racist undertones of the film’s script, itself penned by Stallone, Matthew Cirulnick and Dan Gordon, which ships John Rambo south of the border to kill evil Mexicans – a premise so ill-conceived it left the character’s founding father, David Morrell, “embarrassed” to be associated with Rambo: Last Blood. Strong words, indeed.
Stallone is yet to respond at the time of writing, but he did, however, post a fresh promo for Last Blood which calls out those viewers who, ahem, “can’t handle Rambo.” The...

It’s official: there’s bad blood over Rambo: Last Blood.
Adrian Grunberg and Sylvester Stallone’s blood-soaked actioner drew the ire of film critics when it premiered late last week (our review), with many calling out the racial undertones and gratuitous violence, the latter of which appears to have taken precedence over any and all development on the part of John Rambo. It even led the character’s founding father, author David Morrell, to voice his own dismay, after he admitted to feeling “embarrassed” to have his name associated with Last Blood.
Suffice it to say, Grunberg and Stallone’s Rambo movie fell flat, but there is evidence to suggest that the film is performing decidedly better among audiences. For one, it scooped up a fairly reasonable $19 million at the weekend box office – just shy of the Brad Pitt-led Ad Astra – while the official Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score now sits at 85 percent.

Sylvester Stallone‘s Rambo: Last Blood doesn’t seem to have a fan in series creator David Morrell.
Morrell, 76, wrote his debut 1972 novel First Blood which spawned Stallone’s Rambo franchise. The author shared his thoughts on Last Blood on Twitter Friday, saying he wasn’t happy with the adaptation.

Normally, when an author’s work gets turned into a major, global franchise that spawns numerous sequels released over decades, that writer is incredibly pleased with results. Who wouldn’t want to see their creation beloved by millions of people over generations? Well, if your name is David Morrell and you’re the writer that created John Rambo, seeing your character turned into the man shown in “Rambo: Last Blood” is enough to disgust you.

“Rambo: Last Blood” was ripped to shreds by film critics (the movie has a 26% on Rotten Tomatoes from 96 reviews), but no one seems more disgusted by the movie than “Rambo” creator David Morrell. The 76-year-old author introduced the character of John James Rambo in his debut 1972 novel “First Blood.” Morrell’s book inspired Sylvester Stallone’s “Rambo” action movie franchise, starting with 1982’s “First Blood” adaptation and ending with the recently released “Rambo: Last Blood.”
Morell took to Twitter over the new “Rambo” movie’s opening weekend in theaters to show his support to the film critics bashing the feature. “I agree with these ‘Rambo: Last Blood’ reviews,” Morell wrote to his followers. “The film is a mess. [I’m] embarrassed to have my name associated with it.”

Everything about the Rambo franchise, and especially, the odiously hyper-violent “Rambo: Last Blood” betrays the character Sylvester Stallone helped popularize in the early 80s. Based on the novel by David Morrell, 1982’s “First Blood,” isn’t an action-filled portrait of an American hero fighting a foreign enemy. It’s an emotional, tragic look at a broken soldier coming home and grappling with the psychological trauma of war when there’s no one left to fight.

Rambo is one of the most iconic action heroes in cinematic history. That being said, his legacy sounds like it’s about to end on a really horrible note.
The reviews for Rambo: Last Blood are in and they’re not great. In fact, they’re downright terrible. Even the original author behind the beloved character agrees with what the critics are saying. Best-selling novelist David Morrell recently went on record to reveal that he thinks “the film is a mess” and that he’s embarrassed to have his name associated with it.
His tweet denouncing the movie included a link to a USA Today article as well, which cites several reviews that call the flick a “Trumpian fantasy” and says that “most of the Latinx characters on screen are criminals or broad stereotypes.” This is a sentiment that’s being echoed by the majority of critics, too, many of...

As Rambo: Last Blood arrives on the big screen, Mark revisits Garth Jennings’ Son Of Rambow, an altogether gentler First Blood spin-off…
Placed next to First Blood and the unexpectedly long-lived Rambo franchise, Garth Jennings’ Son of Rambow doesn't seem so odd. More than 30 years after the original adaptation of David Morrell’s novel, we’re now looking at Last Blood, or Rambo No. 5, as Lou Bega might have called it. Although the original film represents some of Sylvester Stallone's best acting work, it doesn't necessarily have “action franchise” written all over it.
With that in mind, it’s not so odd that a family-friendly British comedy would position two 12-year-olds in 1980s Hertfordshire as the makers of an unofficial sequel. Released in 2007, Jennings’ film is an ode to how we interact with films as youngsters--specifically with a film the characters are definitely too young to see.

Home has always been an abstract concept for John Rambo, which is what the last scene of 2008’s otherwise expendable “Rambo” sequel finally gave the iconic Sylvester Stallone character: a moment when this unsettled Vietnam War survivor, looking very much the worse for wear, lumbers up to a mailbox bearing the character’s surname. At last, somewhere in Arizona, this dutybound embodiment of American military might had found his way back to the family ranch.

Brad Pitt’s sci-fi adventure movie “Ad Astra” is heading for a launch around $20 million during the Sept. 20-22 weekend, early tracking showed Thursday.
Pitt is playing a man who journeys across the solar system in search of his missing father, a dangerous renegade scientist. Tommy Lee Jones is the father.
James Gray directed “Ad Astra” for Fox from a script he co-wrote with Ethan Gross. Ruth Negga, Jamie Kennedy, and Donald Sutherland are also starring in “Ad Astra.”
“Ad Astra” premiered on Thursday at the Venice Film Festival. Fox had planned to open the title on May 24 but Disney shifted “Ad Astra” to the fall after buying the Fox’s movie assets. Gray began shooting the movie, which carries an $80 million budget, in 2017.
Fox saw strong performance in 2015 from its space-travel movie “The Martian,” which grossed $630 million worldwide. Sony’s 2016 space film “Passengers” pulled in $300 million in global box office.

Sylvester Stallone has returned as his brooding — and indestructible — John Rambo character in the latest trailer for Lionsgate’s “Rambo: Last Blood.”
“I’ve lived in a world of death,” Stallone’s Rambo says in the clip for the fifth entry in the action franchise. “I’ve watched people I’ve loved die. Some fast with a bullet. Some, not enough to bury. All these years I’ve kept my secrets. But the time has come to face my past.”
The new footage, set in a barren landscape to the strains of Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road,” promises that the film will contain plenty of Stallone employing explosions, his massive knife and his bow and arrows to take down a wide variety of enemies.
“I want them to know that death is coming and there’s nothing they can do about it,” Stallone concludes.
“Rambo: Last Blood” will hit theaters on Sept.

Sylvester Stallone gets off his rocking chair to put an end to death in the first Rambo: Last Blood trailer.
Death is coming and there's nothing anyone can do to stop it. John Rambo, who Sylvester Stallone discovered in the 1972 novel First Blood by David Morrell, has "lived in a world of death," and Rambo V intends to put an end to it. Rambo: Last Blood will be the fifth and final movie in the franchise and the trailer shows the military veteran is going out with a bang.
We last saw Stallone's John Rambo in 2008. He's gone from soldier to cowboy, living peacefully in a happy retirement since his last dispatches. "Now, Rambo must confront his past and unearth his ruthless combat skills to exact revenge in a final mission," reads the official synopsis. "A deadly journey of vengeance."

Exclusive: Producer David Harris has acquired rights to The Protector, the 2003 thriller novel from David Morrell. Morrell is the New York Times bestselling author who penned First Blood, the book that launched Sylvester Stallone’s Rambo movie franchise.
The deal marks the first major IP deal for Harris Films, which Harris launched in 2017. He is the son of producer/film preservationist Robert A. Harris, and worked at Paramount and Platinum Studios before producing the 2017 Millennium Films action thriller Security starring Antonio Banderas and Ben Kingsley.
