Cannes Critics’ Week has appointed French producer Sylvie Pialat as president of the jury for its upcoming edition after Spanish director Rodrigo Sorogoyen, who was originally announced for the role, was forced to cancel for personal reasons.
French director Iris Kaltenbäck has also been been named as a new jury member. Her first film The Rapture premiered to acclaim in Critics’ Week last year. The drama, starring Hafsia Herzi as a midwife who passes off her best friend’s newborn child as her own, won the Prix Sacd.

”“September is always low,” said Fncf’s Marc-Olivier Sebbag, “People have other things to do.”
Despite a promising summer blockbuster boost and August upswing, France’s September box office struggled with just 8.8m ticket sales and a total gross of approximately €63.2m, based on an average ticket price of €7.
The September slump was down 21.1% compared to the pre-pandemic 2017-2019 average and the lowest since 2005 (8.4m).
However it was up 16.1% from last year’s abysmal 7.6m admissions. Last September’s record low marked the worst month at the French box office since 1980, excluding the pandemic-ridden 2020 when cinemas were closed for most of the year.

This tale of a tower block enveloped in nothingness, and the terrible things its residents do to survive, starts grim and just gets grimmer … and grimmer
At the beginning of this remorselessly bleak apocalyptic nightmare, the residents of a tower block in Paris wake up to find the world outside has disappeared. “There is no outdoors,” marvels one man. In its place is a vast black nothingness that swallows up everything and anyone that enters it. About five minutes in, you might start thinking about the plot holes, which feel as gaping as the void’s blackness. Such as, how is that the flats still have electricity? What is making the TVs flicker like it’s the 1980s? Why hasn’t the building been sucked into the abyss?
Actually, these questions are a pleasant distraction from the film’s grim vision of how low humanity can sink. Its writer and director,...

After celebrating premieres at the Rome Film Festival and Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival, Bloody has your first look at French thriller Lockdown Tower (La Tour) directed by Guillaume Nicloux.
In the film…
“The inhabitants of a tower block wake up one morning to find a black veil shrouding all the windows and doors of the building – a black veil which devours anything and anyone who tries to go through it…
“Stuck inside together, families organize themselves but time passes and nothing changes. They gradually return to their most primitive instincts and now respond to a single watchword: survival.”
Lockdown Tower is a film without any moral or justification, without any faith or law, the film’s info includes. It is a film attesting the undisputable truth: man is his own worst nightmare.
Ahmed Abdel-Laoui and Angèle Mac star.
Thanks to Fabien for sending the images and art.

Production began in April of 2021 in Paris with Angèle Mac, Clément Penhoat (aka Hatik), Ahmed Abdel Laoui and Kylian Larmonie.…...

From Ken Russell’s erotic classic The Devils to Guillaume Nicloux’s The Nun, Norifumi Suzuki’s animé take School Of The Holy Beast and Elizabeth E Shuch’s genre-subverting The Book Of Birdie, nuns and lesbianism go together like blockbusters and merchandising in the cinematic imagination. It seems only natural that the subgenre would appeal to Paul Verhoeven, and still more so that he would choose a Renaisance era story, bringing several of his interests together. Benedetta is much more than just an exploitation movie, though – and not just because of the beauty and technical finesse that the Dutch director brings to it. Gerard Soeteman, who contributed to the script, may have left the film (and had his name taken off it) because he felt it was too sexual in its focus, but it is ultimately far more interested in power, society and the sacred.

Iffmh will also pay tribute to producer Bettina Brokemper and director Claude Lelouch with Homages.
All four will be on hand for this year’s festival, where they will hold masterclasses and discuss their work.
“This year we’re trying to find a balance between tradition and innovation, so with our Homage we are paying tribute to the tradition of cinema with Lelouch, and radical cinema, which Lelouch has done and which Brokemper is also producing,” says Iffmh director Sascha Keilholz.

Fantasy, sci-fi and horror films are all in line for the very specific aid put forward by the Cnc, which has also selected the projects Acide by Just Philippot and Incarnation by Mael Le Mée. Created by the Cnc in 2018 with a view to broadening the narrative range of French feature films, the genre film support grant, whose 3rd edition was devoted to fantasy, sci-fi and horror films, has chosen three projects from among the 80 scripts deliberated over by a jury, which was itself headed up by actress Louise Bourgoin and which interviewed fifteen or so preselected filmmaker-producer duos.Stealing focus among the lucky few is La Tour d’Assitan, which will be Guillaume Nicloux’s 16th feature film after titles...
Close-Up is a feature that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. Jeanne Balibar's Wonders in the Suburbs, which is receiving an exclusive global online premiere on Mubi, is showing from August 19 2020 in Mubi's Debuts series.
In 2009, Pedro Costa took a brief detour from his haunted, incantatory studies of Lisbon’s Fontainhas district to produce Ne change rien, a stark black-and-white documentary profile of actress Jeanne Balibar’s performances as a singer. A self-styled jazz chanteuse in the Jacques Brel mold, Balibar perhaps gave us a deeper insight into her art-pop origins when she starred in Barbara (2017), Mathieu Amalric’s biopic of the legendary singer-songwriter and French cultural icon. All of this, together with her work with such Cannes / Cahiers mainstays as Jacques Rivette, Arnaud Desplechin, Guillaume Nicloux, and (in the upcoming Memoria) Apichatpong Weerasethakul, would suggest that Balibar epitomizes effortless urban sophistication. So the last thing one might expect...

Written by the director alongside Gladys Marciano and Pascal Arnold, the screenplay is an adaptation of Barbara Constantine’s novel Tom petit Tom tout petit homme Tom. The story revolves around 11-year-old Tom who lives in an old mobile home with his young mother, Joss. With her love for parties and weekends away with friends, Tom often finds himself alone, and.

Close-Up is a feature that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. Guillaume Nicloux's To the Ends of the World is showing January and February, 2020 in the series From France with Love.A man, center-frame, despondent and immobile, sits on a bench, his head hanging heavy on his chest. Behind him, a foggy background reveals lightly-dressed soldiers trodding the ground in a casual manner, their movement slowed down to strolling. When Robert Tassen (a gritty Gaspard Ulliel) finally aligns his gaze with the spectator, even framed in long shot, his eyes are piercing, brimming with rage. Guillaume Nicloux’s fourteenth feature, To the Ends of the World, is a febrile film set in the time preceding the First Indochina War and, at once, a meditation on grief and ire, the personal and social overlapping in genesis of a war trauma which turns out to be a festering, often crippling wound.
