Post-wwii war crimes thriller Nuremberg boasts a strong leading trio and is set to seek backing at next month’s Cannes Film Festival.
While we don’t have too much on this story, there’s a report that a new project titled Nuremberg is to be revealed at next month’s Cannes Film Festival.
The film will be launching sales at Cannes to try and secure backing to give the film a green light and considering some of the acting talent signed up, we can’t imagine the producers walking away from the French film festival empty-handed.
But first, the set-up.
According to the synopsis (via Variety), ‘Nuremberg chronicles the eponymous trials held by the Allies against the defeated Nazi regime. The film will centre on American psychiatrist Douglas Kelley, who is tasked with determining whether Nazi prisoners are fit to stand trial for their war crimes, and finds himself...

Giving a plot summary of “1899” is like describing what a glop of paint looks like when it’s millimeters from your face. You can describe the color and the texture and maybe even something about the way the light hits it as part of a portrait, but it’s hard to make the case for something in an exhibit without being able to see the thing in full.
So I could say that “1899” is a story that takes place on the Kerberos, a boat sailing the Atlantic in the closing year of the 19th century. I could talk about Maura (Emily Beecham), the exiled doctor running from the shadows of her past. I could make the case that Kerberos captain Eyk (Andreas Pietschmann) and a slew of passengers from cushy suites to the cargo hold are all doing the same thing.
But series creators Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar...

Mystery-thriller “Dark” handed Netflix one of its first big international hits, while announcing German creators Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese as potential masters of the atmospheric puzzle-show.
The pair’s latest, “1899,” presents an even more elaborate conundrum, expanding outwards from its escape-room opening: a blanched heroine (Emily Beecham) awaking in a cabin of the Kerberos, a steamer carrying immigrants to the New World. Armchair detectives will already be noting the woman’s bruised wrists, the postcard on her dresser, the newspaper reporting a vanished ship with an equally suggestive name. Critics were left scrambling for the middling-to-long list of spoilers Netflix’s PR team were keen for us to avoid.
If “Dark” was “Twin Peaks” without the goofiness, then “1899” risks synopsis – and simplification – as “Lost” on the high seas. In fact, this is several shows at once, and part of the puzzle lies in figuring out which one it wants to be.

If 1899’s creators had been specifically instructed to make a TV series that’s impossible to watch while scrolling on your phone, they couldn’t have done a better job. This eight-episode mystery series demands full attention. Not only does its story slide between flashbacks, hallucinations, weird visual motifs and eye-widening cliffhanger twists, its huge cast of characters also all speak different languages. Viewers not fluent in German, Spanish, French, Swedish, Polish, English and more will need their reading glasses handy.
They’ll want them too, because 1899, from the makers of hit Netflix series Dark, is a terrific-looking show and an intriguing puzzle to solve. It’s the story of the Kerberos, a steamship transporting 1,400 passengers from Southampton to New York City on the cusp of the 20th century. Four months earlier, another of the company’s ships went missing, so when the Kerberos receives a set of mysterious coordinates,...

You can tell if somebody’s watched German Netflix series Dark by the furrow in their brow and the delirium in their eyes. The 2017 – 2020 time-travel mystery required a flip-chart of graphs and diagrams to explain, but proved a cult hit for Netflix and led to its creators Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar signing a deal with the streamer. 1899 (read our spoiler-free review here) is the result.
“Knowing that we did Dark, everyone can be assured that [1899] is going to be something weird and wild and crazy,” Friese promised Deadline about her and Odar’s new Netflix series. The writer-directors vowed not to repeat themselves with the new eight-episode period drama, but still to give their audience a fun puzzle that returns to the pair’s mystery roots.

The long-awaited 1899 premieres Thursday, November 17, on Netflix.
After watching the episodes provided to critics for review, it's clear the series is another winner from Dark creators Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese.
1899 takes viewers to the high seas for a story focused on a group of migrants traveling from London on a steamship to start a new life in New York City.
However, things turn mysterious when they encounter another migrant ship adrift in the ocean.
The mysteries crafted by the creatives leave you with more questions than answers, but the beauty of the writing is that we get a lot of payoff throughout the first six episodes.
There's an immediate sense of dread in the series premiere that doesn't subside as crazy happenings occur, leaving us with the feeling that things will get worse before they get better.

Hailing from Dark creators Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar, 1899 is a suitably creepy and mysterious period thriller about a missing (possibly haunted) ship. The eight-episode Netflix series is a combination of the first season of The Terror and Ghost Ship with a splash of Downton Abbey.
The series opens with a nightmare as Maura Franklin (Emily Beechum), an English doctor, awakens from a dream where she’s threatened by a mysterious man shrouded in shadows. Immediately upon exiting her room it’s clear that she’s already onboard a ship, crossing the ocean to New York like her brother Henry. He and more than a thousand other people have been missing for four months since something happened to the Prometheus, a sister ship to the one Maura is on. Her only hint of what happened is a letter addressed to Henry asking him to come to New York as quickly as possible.

If you were a fan of Netflix’s Dark, then the next mind-bending series from creators Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar looks to be right up your alley. Netflix has released another trailer for 1899, a mystery series which follows the passengers of an immigrant ship encountering the biggest mystery of their lives on their journey across the cast and treacherous Atlantic Ocean.
Set against Jimi Hendrix’s cover of All Along the Watchtower, the 1899 trailer looks like a wild ride, full of disturbing imagery and mysteries just begging to be solved. Baran bo Odar has previously teased that 1899 will be unlike Dark in a lot of ways. “Dark was not about action at all, but this is really an action show, with a lot of violence, beating, running, screaming,” Odar said. “I think it’s going to be exciting to watch with the audience [to see] if they love this new puzzle too,...

"None of this makes any sense…" Netflix has revealed an official trailer for 1899, a mysterious new sci-fi supernatural thriller series from the creators of the very popular "Dark" German sci-fi series on Netflix. Full of hope for a better future, passengers aboard a ship to the New World sail into a nightmare when they find a second vessel adrift on the open sea. On their journey across the vast and treacherous Atlantic Ocean, the passengers of the Kerberos encounter the biggest mystery of their lives. Welcome to 1899, an immersive new series from the creators of Dark. This seems like a story about the Bermuda Triangle, but they wouldn't pass through that region going to New York from Europe. Then again, triangles plays a big part in this, appearing everywhere including on tattoos and hidden messages and this weird switch board. Hmm. What is going on in this?! The massive international cast includes Emily Beecham,...

Are you ready to take a terrifying trip on the high seas? Hot off the heels of its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, the latest series from "Dark" creators Jante Friese and Baran bo Odar is about to set sail onto Netflix. "1899" has a seemingly straightforward premise, centering around a group of migrants sailing to New York City in the titular year. However, their voyage won't be smooth, as an abandoned migrant ship called the Prometheus crossing their path houses more secrets than anyone could expect. As the trailer showcases, this encounter has many grave consequences that go far beyond anyone's comprehension.
Of course, there is undoubtedly a lot about the show that this new trailer is hiding. Nevertheless, it already looks to be a chilling look at immigration, prejudice, and the innate fear of the unknown. If it is just as effective as "Dark" was with its heavy themes,...

Netflix has dropped the new trailer for 1899, the hotly anticipated new mystery horror series from the makers of Dark.
And it is really weird.
The first Dark trailer, which Netflix released in June, set the stage for the show: we’re on an immigrant steamer traveling to the “new world,” filled with people who are all “running away from something.” En route, they encounter a mysterious second ship, the Prometheus, which has been missing for months, adrift on the open sea. When the crew decides to board Prometheus, things take a horrific turn.…
So far so strange.
The second trailer expands on the universe Dark masterminds Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar have created for 1899, without ever explaining what is really going on. But there are plenty of bread crumbs to follow — including the repeated image of a black triangle — that should prove...

Matt Dillon (“The House That Jack Built”) and Charlotte Gainsbourg are attached to star in Fred Garson’s “An Ocean Apart,” a period drama about the romantic affair between French philosopher Simone de Beauvoir and American writer Nelson Algren.
The film is being developed by French producer Olivier Delbosc at Curiosa Films, which is presenting Xavier Giannoli’s Venice competition player “Lost Illusions” and Yvan Attal’s “Les choses humaines,” and Matthew Gledhill at Wheelhouse Prods. Dillon is at Venice with “Land of Dreams,” screening in the Horizons section, and Gainsbourg stars in “Les choses humaines,” unspooling out of competition.
Set during the late 1940s in Paris and Chicago, “An Ocean Apart” was written by Ron Riley in collaboration with Garson and Claire Barré. The film charts the fiery yet mostly letter-based relationship between Beauvoir and Algren that spanned from 1947 to 1964. Algren, who was Jewish, is best known for the...

Exclusive: Netflix’s first German original series Dark was always going to be a tough act to follow for its creators Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar. The mind-bending, time-weaving show debuted on the platform in December 2017 and attracted a global fanbase across a run of three taut, satisfying seasons until it concluded in June 2020. Alongside critical acclaim, the series is also understood to have been a viewing hit for Netflix, which doesn’t disclose specific numbers but did reveal back in October that it was the streamer’s third most watched international series in America.
In 2018, Friese and Odar inked a significant overall deal with Netflix that sees them exclusively create projects for the streamer across an initial five-year period. Post-Dark, their next show will be 1899, an ambitious period mystery set on a migrant boat sailing from Europe to the United States. As Deadline revealed today, the project will star Aneurin Barnard,...

Here in Germany, we headed back into what has been described as a “soft” lockdown on Monday. But before this, as it was my wedding anniversary, and as we had a babysitter for the first time since baby number 2 was delivered by the stork, we decided to get down our local cinema, while we could. My wife and I (and 4 other people) saw the German language film Es ist zu deinem Besten (It is For Your Own Good) and it was rather fun.
I appreciate this is going to be rather niche, given this is an English language site, but as I physically went to the cinema I feel this needs to be celebrated, given what is going on in the world.

In the third and final season of Dark on Netflix, the show takes even more twists and turns through time - and other worlds - and brings further questions about the characters. It covers more years than the first two seasons, even jumping back to the 1800s. In the scenes from 1888 in episode two, we meet an old blind man who is a bit of a mystery at first, as he's not outright identified. But after putting the pieces together, we now know who the blind man is.
First, let's fast forward to how the entire show ends. The older Claudia (Lisa Kreuzer) tells Adam (Dietrich Hollinderbäumer) that she knows how to untie the knot that will break the entire cycle of time travel, and the answer lies with H.G. Tannhaus. He's the clockmaker who created the original time travel machine in 1986 in the origin world. By attempting to go back in time,...
