NCIS is coming back to the screens later this year with its season 22, and there might be more surprises than everyone is expecting right now. The last season’s finale left two major cliffhangers for the next installment, and fans are probably counting days until they finally get to see what happens to Jessica Knight after she accepts that big offer and whether Alden Parker’s vision will force the show to dive deeper into the character’s backstory.
However, NCIS’ next season might also highlight the return of an original character that was gone too soon by season 3, yet there are still some ways for them to make their way back to the show.
Started in 2003, NCIS featured Sasha Alexander’s Caitlin ‘Kate’ Todd as one of the Special Agents right until the season 2 finale, where she was shot dead by sniper and Mossad double-agent Ari Haswari, with Ziva...

NCIS star Cote de Pablo couldn’t have been more grateful to play special agent Ziva David. But she admitted that there were certain aspects to her character she would’ve liked to have tweaked slightly.
Cote de Pablo once revealed the challenges of playing Ziva David Cote de Pablo | Gary Gershoff/Getty Images
De Pablo spent a lot of time with NCIS’s Ziva David. She played the character for a consecutive eight years before taking a long hiatus from the procedural. But de Pablo wasn’t exactly like her NCIS counterpart, as there were more than a few differences between the two. Ziva’s emotions could sometimes be very suppressed in NCIS, which might’ve partially stopped the character from expressing her true feelings for Michael Weatherly’s Tony Dinozzo a bit earlier. This was a strong contrast to de Pablo, who considered herself a very open person.

Over the years, NCIS has seen a lot of comings and goings, with some being respected and even celebrated by viewers, and others taking time to settle in. Even the most beloved characters today have struggled to shine through the judgment of fans back in the day, and Ziva David was one of them.
Right now, however, Cote de Pablo, who portrays Ziva, and Michael Weatherly, who portrays Tony Dinozzo, make up one of the most popular dynamics on NCIS. And learning that there was a good chance it would never happen makes fans even happier that it did.
When Did Ziva First Appear on NCIS?

Started back in 2003, the NCIS universe keeps growing as the franchise is set to get two more spinoffs that will arrive around the same time as the original show’s season 22, and one of those upcoming series already appears to be a significant milestone for the entire franchise.
The show titled NCIS: Tony & Ziva will dive deeper into the relationship of Tony Dinozzo and Ziva David, portrayed by Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo respectively, who quit the flagship series a while ago. Even ahead of the show’s premiere, the characters’ return seems to be something that the long-running franchise has surely needed all this time.
Set to be released later this year, NCIS: Tony & Ziva will find its characters in Europe after both of them decided to start their career paths afresh and will presumably follow the events after an attack on Tony’s security firm,...

Launched back in 2003, the NCIS franchise isn’t losing its ground anytime soon as it keeps expanding the original show’s universe with two more exciting spinoffs to come soon. The franchise is currently working on NCIS: Origins, starring Austin Stowell as young Leroy Jethro Gibbs, and NCIS: Tony & Ziva with the latter following Tony Dinozzo and Ziva David’s career paths and personal relationships after they both quit the flagship series.
Now that the NCIS universe is getting bigger by significantly enlarging its characters’ background stories, one of the show’s creators has revealed his personal thoughts on potential crossovers in the franchise, and there’s one seemingly big problem that doesn’t seem to be that much of a big deal to him.

With so many very popular procedural TV shows, it seems like a very easy genre to tap into and achieve instant success. Especially if the main character is already known and loved by the audience. Especially if the show airs in prime time on a popular network. And yet, it may not be enough.
There are too many factors that go into making the show successful, and if it's not, it's usually scrapped. The case of CBS' Bull shows just how far a procedural can go by relying on just one actor.
Is Bull Worth Watching?
Bull was a CBS legal procedural drama starring Michael Weatherly, the star of the NCIS franchise, as Dr. Jason Bull, a psychologist who once dreamed of becoming a lawyer but failed the licensing exam twice and had to settle for working with lawyers to solve the toughest cases.

Even though NCIS has been at the top of its franchise this year, adding one of the most anticipated and least expected spinoffs to the mix, fans are already clamoring for more news. As Cote de Pablo and Michael Weatherly prepare to begin work on NCIS: Tony & Ziva this summer, fans are asking the creators more and more tricky questions.
Even though viewers only know the vague premise of the Tiva-centered spinoff, they're already raising their hopes for how it will coexist with other branches of the show. One thing that fans are particularly curious about is whether they can expect Tony & Ziva to eventually crossover with the original NCIS series.
NCIS: Tony & Ziva Crossovers
Even though it's not too surprising that NCIS fans are rooting for a crossover, given that the franchise has already had quite a few, the chances of it happening with the Tony & Ziva spinoff are very slim.

NCIS star Michael Weatherly left the long-running procedural after 13 years on the show. But Weatherly once joked that the show might’ve benefited from an even earlier departure.

Weatherly agonized a bit over leaving NCIS. He’d built up a passionate fanbase in his 13 years on the hit show, and had a close professional bond with a few of his co-workers. Speaking with Extra, Weatherly confided that he had an epiphany sometime before his final season on the show. Weatherly jotted down ideas about his character Tony Dinozzo, and realized through his brainstorming that the special agent might’ve run its course.
“I wrote down a long series of ideas and feelings and everything. And I realized, ‘Oh, Dinozzo has to go.’ Like, it’s time for him to graduate,” Weatherly said.

NCIS shocked many when Cote de Pablo initially left the series after 11 seasons. But she made her return to the franchise not too long ago, which she would’ve only done for a good reason.

“We wanted to give her the most graceful, emotional payoff we could,” executive Gary Glasberg once told TV Guide. “It was a pretty magical moment. Cote took it and ran with it, and the emotion you’ll see on screen is very real.

Even though Mark Harmon is considered the heart and soul of NCIS, as it is impossible to imagine the show running for so long without the charismatic father figure of Gibbs, that does not mean the actor did not have his fair share of struggles while working on the show.

The NCIS franchise continues to expand, and one of the upcoming shows is going to give fans exactly what they’ve wanted for years: more Tony (Michael Weatherly) and Ziva (Cote de Pablo)! De Pablo left NCIS in 11 before returning for the Season 16 finale and four episodes of Season 17. The new series was given a straight-to-series order on February 28. “We’ve been talking about this story for many years, and now with John McNamara at the helm, we are ready,” said Weatherly and de Pablo at the time. “The world of Tony and Ziva (and daughter Tali) promises to be an action-packed roller coaster fueled by love, danger, tears and laughter. Are you ready for a classic Grey's Anatomy finale?
We're not new to this; we're true to it, so the only thing that won't be surprising from Grey's Anatomy Season 20 Episode 10 is that it's guaranteed that all hell will collectively break loose.
There's a strong chance we'll also be left with a cliffhanger.
It remains to be determined whether that cliffhanger only supports the notion that the series has become too reliant on formula.
But alas, it's one of the more fun aspects of this series, so the more drama, the better.
And we have a lot of drama in store for us.
It's a clash of the titans situation with Meredith and Catherine.
The former manages to rope a few people into her rogue research, while the latter throws all of her weight around.
This situation feels too eerily similar to Mer's nonsensical insurance fraud storyline during Grey's Anatomy...

This year NCIS gave its fans the best gift ever by bringing back Tony Dinozzo and Ziva David and giving them their own spinoff. While fans may be disappointed to learn that the spinoff has found its home outside of cable, on a streaming platform called Paramount Plus, and that means shorter seasons for more money, it's still an exciting prospect.
After so many years in the dark about the relationship between two iconic NCIS characters, and then a solid conclusion in season 17, no one believed that Cote de Pablo and Michael Weatherly would grace our screens again as the show's most dynamic duo. Even better, you don't have to wait until the show premieres to join the reunion.

NCIS star Michael Weatherly has been involved in a few subtle love storylines during his time on the show. But there was one subplot in particular that hit too close to home for the actor.

Weatherly’s Tony Dinozzo has had a few potential love interests in the show. One of his first and most notable onscreen partners was Scottie Thompson’s Jeanne Benoit.

Even though the majority of NCIS fans are happy to see Ziva and Tony together, and even more excited about the new spinoff that will focus entirely on their relationship, they are still cautious about the actors staying on for the long haul.
Given that both Cote de Pablo, who portrays Ziva, and Michael Weatherly, who portrays Tony, have left the franchise before, their comebacks are something viewers prefer to remain cautious about. This is especially true for de Pablo, who has never addressed the details of her decision to step away from the role.
Why Did Cote de Pablo Leave NCIS?
Back in 2013 fans of NCIS were shaken by the news of a fan-favorite character, a special agent Ziva David, exiting the show. Even though her character wasn’t initially loved and it took some time for the fans to warm up to her, throughout 8 years in NCIS she...

Harry Potter welcomed Gary Oldman with open arms when he was cast as Sirius Black. After playing the character, who compared the role of Sirius to Shakespeare. Although it might not be for the reasons some might think.
Gary Oldman compared playing Sirius Black to Shakespeare Gary Oldman | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
Oldman might’ve found playing Sirius Black a bit more surface-level than his usual characters. Way back in 2004, he was pretty upfront that he only took the role because it was available work. The Harry Potter franchise’s appeal to kids was also a bonus seeing as Oldman had a family of his own.
“Well, I needed the work – that’s the honest answer,” Oldman once told The Telegraph (via Hpana). “I haven’t worked for a while, a couple of years. So I thought it would be nice to get back to work and earn some money. Pay the bills.

The NCIS: Hawai’i cast formed a strong bond while filming that they don’t want to let go.
Key cast members shared beautiful photos from a beach where they said goodbye to each other and the series.
CBS canceled NCIS: Hawai’i recently, ending the series after three strong seasons.
Despite a fan petition to save the series, the network pushed on with a Fall 2024 schedule that doesn’t include the NCIS spin-off.
Instead, NCIS: Origins takes over on Monday nights, with the prequel series set to debut after episodes from NCIS Season 22.
Vanessa Lachey recently returned to Hawai’i to ponder what had happened, and she even apologized to her cast and crew for not getting a proper goodbye.

An NCIS: Origins cast video was released to get potential viewers excited.
This new show from the NCISverse is taking some risks, as the producers hope fans want to see stories from younger versions of some important characters.
Flashback episodes of NCIS went over very well, with stories like when Leroy Jethro Gibbs first met Donald Mallard. They even had Mark Harmon’s son (Sean Harmon) play a younger version of Gibbs.
The idea to do flashbacks has been fleshed out into a full series, with episodes of NCIS: Origins debuting in Fall 2024.
The new show gets the 10/9c timeslot on Mondays that has been vacated by NCIS: Hawai’i. Unfortunately, the Vanessa Lachey NCIS spin-off was canceled by CBS.
NCIS Season 22 will air on Mondays at 9/8c in the fall, serving as the lead-in for this new prequel show.

NCIS is not afraid to lose characters, whether by them leaving or even dying. There is not a single main character left from the pilot, and only Sean Murray remains as Timothy McGee from the first season (his first appearance was on the seventh episode of Season 1). Now, another major character might be leaving.
Here is a look at what changes the NCIS season finale might bring to the show.
Could Katrina Law Leave NCIS?
Katrina Law might be leaving NCIS after this season’s finale. The Season 21 finale (“Reef Madness”) has some hints that Knight (Law) might leave the series by taking on a new job. The show has never shied away from characters leaving the show — often in shocking manners.
Caitlin Todd (Sasha Alexander) was a main character in the first season as she clashed with Jetrho Leroy Gibbs before joining the team and becoming a key member of his squad.

One of the biggest storylines for fans came with the growing relationship between Tony and Ziva. However, thanks to Cote de Pablo leaving the show, and then Michael Weatherly departing, this love story never had a satisfying ending for fans. Even when de Pablo returned, Weatherly was gone and fans were left wanting.
That will change with a Tony and Ziva NCIS spinoff series coming to Paramount+. Here is what you need to know.
Tony & Ziva Finally Getting NCIS Closure
For years, fans watched NCIS to see if Tony DeNozzo and Ziva David would finally get their happy ending. It never occurred. Instead, Ziva seemingly died and left Tony with their child he never knew existed. Tony left after Season 13, taking the child and going to Paris, as he never believed Ziva was dead.

Paramount’s Tony & Ziva NCIS spinoff is untitled no more. The two stars of the Europe-set series, Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo, got on Zoom to unveil the moniker of the offshoot Tuesday.
After referencing a couple of titles that had been floated, NCIS: Europe and NCIS: Trust No One, the duo announced that the official title of their new show will be NCIS: Tony & Ziva.
“It makes it really easy because the fans will know exactly what the show is. It’s about Tony and Ziva in Europe,” de Pablo said.
The action-packed spinoff, which has a 10-episode order, will follow Tony (Weatherly) and Ziva (de Pablo) as they find themselves on the run across the old continent.
Filming on the series — the second extension of the NCIS franchise beyond the U.S. after NCIS: Sydney — is slated to begin this summer in Budapest. John McNamara is the writer/showrunner.

Tiva is back—and the fan-favorite characters have gone international. Paramount+ has brought back Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo for an NCIS spinoff about Tony and Ziva, and until now, it has remained untitled. But that has changed. A video shared on social media featuring Weatherly and de Pablo has revealed the title. It begins with Weatherly asking, “What’s the name of your new TV series? Is it NCIS: Europe?” De Pablo says no. “NCIS: Trust No One,” he suggests. “No, even though that’s a really good one,” she says. He encourages her to tell fans the title, and she does: NCIS: Tony & Ziva. “It makes it really easy because the fans will know exactly what the show is. It’s about Tony and Ziva in Europe,” she continues. He shares they’ll be shooting it this summer. “I expect intrigue, romance, the background of Europe.

It’s the end of the road for NCIS: Hawai’i.
The third NCIS spin-off has been canceled after three seasons on CBS.
The sad news came out this afternoon as CBS decided not to order a fourth season.
NCIS: Hawai’i had been on the renewal bubble for a while, with the network forced to make a difficult decision due to its packed schedule.
While NCIS was picked up for its 22nd season and NCIS: Sydney Season 2 got ordered, the Vanessa Lachey-led show did not survive.
This will be rough news for fans who have enjoyed watching the Hawaiin spin-off featuring Lachey, LL Cool J, and the rest of the cast.

After three seasons, NCIS: Hawai’i has been cancelled by CBS. While the show was on the bubble, Deadline says it’s still a little surprising as there had been talks of an “abbreviated fourth and final season,” but that would have come with a massive budget cut.
NCIS: Hawai’i starred Vanessa Lachey as Jane Tennant, the first female Special Agent-in-Charge of the NCIS: Hawaiʻi Field Office. The finale of the third season, which will now be a series finale, will air on May 6th. Sources say that while it wasn’t meant to be a series finale, the episode won’t end on a major cliffhanger that will leave fans frustrated. With just three seasons under its belt, this places NCIS: Hawai’i has the shortest series in the franchise, following NCIS: New Orleans with 7 seasons and NCIS: Los Angeles with 14 seasons. CBS is shutting down one of its NCIS field offices.
The network has canceled NCIS: Hawai’i after three seasons. The show’s season — and now series — finale is set to air on May 6.
The series, which stars Vanessa Lachey and added former NCIS: Los Angeles star LL Cool J to its cast this season, will likely end up as the most watched show to be canceled this season — topping two other canceled CBS shows, CSI: Vegas and So Help Me Todd. NCIS: Hawai’i is averaging about 7.8 million viewers in Nielsen’s seven-day linear ratings this season, and it hits 10 million viewers over 35 days of cross-platform viewing.
Those numbers would make for easy renewals most anyplace else, but they put NCIS: Hawai’i only in the middle of the pack at CBS. The network will also introduce a new NCIS series in the 2024-25 season, a prequel subtitled Origins that follows a...

“NCIS: Hawai’i” has been canceled at CBS.
The “NCIS” spinoff is currently airing its third season at the broadcast network. The season finale scheduled to air on May 6 will now serve as the series finale.
“NCIS: Hawai’i” was the fourth series in the “NCIS” franchise and is now the third series to end. Both “NCIS: New Orleans” and “NCIS: Los Angeles” ended in the past few years after seven and 14 seasons respectively.
That is not to say the franchise is not still going strong. The mothership series was renewed at the beginning of April. CBS is also prepping a prequel series about a young Jethro Leroy Gibbs, while Paramount+ is readying a spinoff that will see the returns of both Cote de Pablo and Michael Weatherly. Paramount+ and CBS also air “NCIS: Sydney,” which was renewed for a second season in March.

Fans desperately want to know if NCIS: Hawai’i will be canceled or renewed for a fourth season.
As of the writing of this article, CBS has not announced the future of the NCIS spin-off.
The network might not be as sure of the Monday night drama as it once was.
One of the issues that CBS faces is the number of successful dramas that have already been renewed for Fall 2024.
The success of Elsbeth, Tracker, and Fire Country has taken up three hours of primetime slots. And CBS recently renewed S.W.A.T. as well.

NCIS: Origins has added Daniel Bellomy (Power Book II: Ghost), Caleb Martin Foote (Made For Love) and Robert Taylor (Longmire) in recurring roles. The CBS prequel to the venerable procedural has a straight-to-series order for the 2024-2025 broadcast season.

It will be a long wait until the first NCIS: Europe episode arrives.
That’s the unofficial name some NCIS fans gave the new spin-off featuring Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo.
The name does fit, as it’s an NCIS show in Europe, leading to a very fitting possible name. But CBS hasn’t announced what they are calling it yet.
Since it’s easier to keep calling it that as a point of reference, it’s what we will do for the rest of this article.
NCIS: Europe tells the continued stories of NCIS agents Anthony Dinozzo and Ziva David. One chapter in their overseas lives will be examined in the first season of the new series.
Tony and Ziva are raising their daughter (Tali) in Paris. When Tony’s security company gets attacked, the family flees through Europe. Thus making this the first mobile NCIS series.

NCIS has been on 21 seasons, NCIS: Los Angeles lasted 14 seasons, and NCIS: New Orleans seven. NCIS: Hawaii is in its third season, while NCIS: Sydney recently finished its first season. You do the math to get to 999.
So, as the NCISverse's 1,000th episode approaches, would now be the peak for the franchise, with two spinoffs airing this season and two new spinoffs planned for next season?
Not at all, although this certainly could be seen as the golden age of NCIS Recycling, which admittedly is at least in vogue now.

“NCIS” and “The Neighborhood” have both been renewed at CBS.
The renewal will bring “NCIS” to its 22nd season, while “The Neighborhood” will be back for its seventh season. Both shows currently air on Mondays on the broadcast network.
“’The Neighborhood’ and ‘NCIS’ are the very best definition of a CBS comedy and drama,” said Amy Reisenbach, president of CBS Entertainment. “They embody authentic storytelling with heart, humor, and family dynamics. We are proud to bring them back next season.”
“NCIS” has long been a cornerstone of the CBS scripted lineup. Per CBS, the series is still averaging 12.9 million multiplatform viewers, even this late in its run. The show serves as the foundation for a TV franchise that continues to pay off for CBS and parent company Paramount. CBS also currently airs “NCIS: Hawaii” while “NCIS: Sydney” airs on Paramount+ and CBS. CBS is also at work on a prequel...

Many NCIS and NCIS: Hawai’i fans may be in for a shock. Today, CBS announced that the current seasons are close to ending.
The NCISverse celebrated April 8 with a primetime special about the first 1,000 episodes. This includes content from NCIS, NCIS: Los Angeles, NCIS: New Orleans, NCIS: Sydney, and NCIS: Hawai’i.
It’s a huge milestone for the franchise, and many new episodes are still coming- just not this spring.
As a reminder, two Hollywood strikes caused delays in production for most scripted shows. This means shorter seasons for the hit dramas.
NCIS Season 21 has only 10 episodes, with the seventh airing on April 15. That’s the night the franchise debuts its 1,000th NCIS episode.
NCIS: Hawai’i Season 3 also has only 10 episodes, and Vanessa Lachey recently celebrated filming ending.
