Celebrating messiahs from the underbelly of any society is nothing new. Nevertheless, there has been a serious dearth of noir films in the history of Bangla cinema. Every time the city is seen in cinema, it remains visually stunning. Yet, surprisingly, the underdogs are carefully swept under the carpet. Under the project of the beautification of the city, there has been no place for slums, everyday violence, brothels and other kinds of chotoloks (downtrodden). Yet, without them, the State and the bhodrolok community, who write the history of any decade from above, would be a sham. Bratya Basu's “Hubba” (Don/ 2024/133mns) depicts the life and rise of Hubba Shyamal aka Bimal (his screen name) and the volatile nexus of politics within the underworld. In other words, it is a biopic on the notorious gangster Hubba Shyamal in the 1990s Hooghly, played by popular Bangladeshi actor Mosharraf Karim.

Shane Black's 2013 film "Iron Man 3" (or "Iron Man Three" as it is titled on-screen) is handily one of the best films in the long-running and now-pretty-much-dead Marvel Cinematic Universe. It is a clever, witty film that forces Tony Stark to solve a mystery and face off against bad guys without a fully functioning Iron Man suit. It displayed how capable Stark was as a wise human being as opposed to a mere superhuman. The end of the trilogy also brought the "Iron Man" story to an effective conclusion. The new Netflix movie Mamasapano is an account of the tragic deaths of 44 policemen who died while trying to catch Philippines’ most wanted terrorists, Marwan and Usman, in the area of the Philippines known as Mamasapano. The film basically attacks the Philippine government of the time and questions its intentions towards its police force. The men were supposed to return safely to their families, but the infamous peace project meant that a ceasefire couldn’t be imposed, and the men continued to die. The film becomes a bureaucratic thriller, where insiders have a lot more information than they show to the media, hiding behind their plausible deniability. The way the movie’s made, it’s confusing at times to keep track of the 55th and the 84th Special Action Company (Sac), who were the main units who were massacred by the rebels of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (Milf).

Updated, with White House comment: TikTok announced today that it was removing videos that have popped up on the platform in which users of various ages and ethnicities promote Osama bin Laden’s “Letter to America,” which he had written to justify the attacks on 9/11.
“Content promoting this letter clearly violates our rules on supporting any form of terrorism,” TikTok said in a message posted on X/Twitter. “We are proactively and aggressively removing this content and investigating how it got onto our platform.”

Robert J. O’Neill, a former Navy Seal who said he killed Osama bin Laden, was arrested last week in Frisco, Texas.
He was taken to jail last Wednesday and released on a $3,500 bond. Frisco police said O’Neill was charged with misdemeanors for assault and public intoxication.
According to social media posts, O’Neill was in Frisco to record a podcast.

While the summer movie season brought audiences the much-talked-about July double-bill Barbie and Oppenheimer, the latter, unfortunately, still has some very real-world horror associated with it. While the notion of the dual movie premieres made for a unique experience that can have a fun light shone on it, some who saw Oppenheimer may feel the movie, and the real events it depicts, too heavy to make light of.
This gave all the jokes and memes made online a thinner line to walk than usually thought. And while nobody is seemingly joking about the nature of the historical events themselves, certain imagery and wording can offer the possibility of over-straddling the line of taste. The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Japanese Twitter has been trending the hashtag #NoBarbenheimer after the official Barbie account responded positively to mash up images of Barbie being her bubbly self in the face of an atomic explosion.

#NoBarbenheimer has been trending on Japanese Twitter over the last couple of days amid an angry response to the official U.S. Barbie account on the platform commenting on memes seen as using the atomic bombings as jokes.
Posts featuring mashups of the Barbie and Oppenheimer films with explosions in the background and Barbie with her hair in the shape of an atomic bomb mushroom cloud were all reacted to positively by the @barbiethemovie account. One post featuring the two lead actors from the movies in front of apocalyptic flames drew the comment, “It’s going to be a summer to remember.” Meanwhile, the mushroom cloud hairdo tweet had the U.S. account posting, “This Ken is a stylist,” in an apparent reference to Barbie’s boyfriend, played by Ryan Gosling in the film.

Never make jokes about golf – or is it, never make jokes about the 9/11 terrorist attacks? As Greg Gutfeld found out on Wednesday night, it’s definitely both.
Jokes that clang on the studio audience have become a regular part of the “Gutfeld!” schtick on Fox News late night, and the namesake host dropped a doozy amid a monologue about the merger between the PGA Tour and Saudi Arabia-based Liv Golf. This time, the unwise wisecrack earned him 10 seconds of near-silence.
Gutfeld served up the blockbuster sports merger as the main topic of his opening monologue, fully aware he was out of his element. But one sequence of gags led him straight to dead-air:

In this case, it’s The Secret Life of Us,, which led to his breakout film role as “Uncle” Owen Lars in Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones and Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, as well as the 2022 TV series Obi-Wan Kenobi. (It definitely helped that Edgerton has an uncanny resemblance to Phil Brown, who played Luke Skywalker’s step-uncle in the original 1977 Star Wars film.
And, once you’ve done Star Wars, Hollywood beckons. Edgerton appeared with James Gandolfini and Chris Pratt in Zero Dark Thirty, the dramatisation of the decade-long hunt for Osama bin Laden.

Last month, to my great surprise, I raved about a Guy Ritchie movie, “Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre,” as an exhilarating exception to the rule of Ritchie’s style-over-substance, more-frosting-than-cake school of crime-thriller grandiloquence. The film bombed, and more critics than not disagreed with me. But I stand by my assessment of “Operation Fortune” as a diabolically entertaining screwball action-espionage caper. If you want to talk about exceptions to the rule, though, that movie has nothing on the new Guy Ritchie film, which is called (wait for it) “Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant.”
