Taylor Zakhar Perez and Nicholas Galitzine just spoke with EW for a new interview as part of The Awardist podcast and they opened up about the potential for a sequel.
The actors play Prince Henry of Britain and Alex Claremont-Diaz, first son of the first female president of the United States, in the movie based on Casey McQuiston‘s bestselling novel. The story documents their transition from frenemies to actual friends to eventual lovers. It also features some steamy love scenes.
So, would they be open to reprising their roles in a sequel?

Content warning: the following story contains spoilers for "Red, White & Royal Blue."
Turning a beloved novel into a film is always a challenge, since there are inevitably things from the book that will have to be left out. In the new movie "Red, White & Royal Blue," based on Casey McQuiston's best-selling romance novel of the same name, director Matthew Lopez (who co-wrote the screenplay with Ted Malawer) had to make some choices about what to edit or change when adapting the book for the big screen. The book and movie both tell the love story of Alex Claremont-Diaz (Taylor Zakhar Perez), first son of the United States, and Britain's Prince Henry (Nicholas Galitzine), and their general trajectory is about the same in both tellings. But the world around them is quite a bit different between the book and the film, with some beloved characters getting completely cut from the narrative.

It’s still summer, so it’s still time for light, puffy comedies while the temps are warm. Red, White & Royal Blue is a beach-read of a comedy, a frothy confection in which a young American meets a young British prince. Except this American is not someone ordinary but the son of the President – a woman President no less. But the president’s son and the royal develop an immediate mutual dislike, but despite their dislike, they are forced to pretend to be friends for diplomatic reasons. You know where this goes but what looks at first like a bromance quickly shifts into gay rom-com. Red, White & Royal Blue is a modern fantasy packed with rom-com tropes, plenty of silliness, plus a touch of Jane Austen and Harry and Meghan flavor.

Did you ever meet someone who at first seems objectionable, but with time finds a place in your heart? That’s both the plot and the viewing experience for Red, White & Royal Blue, an Amazon production based on the well-loved novel of the same name by Casey McQuiston. In it, the son of the American president and an English prince begin as rivals but quickly fall in love and have to keep their relationship a secret for the sake of their respective countries.
Packed with national cliches, intermittently stunted dialogue, and an early cake-based bit of slapstick, you’d be forgiven for thinking this is going to be one excruciating ride. But somehow, Red, White & Royal Blue manages to be actually sort of sweet. This is a modern-set, yet ‘90s-styled and Bridgerton-lite, bit of wish fulfillment where beautiful rich people argue about privilege and entitlement and have tasteful and romantic sex.

WGA member López stationed himself in a holding room inside the building, well away from the red carpet, because, he said, “I’m on strike as a screenwriter but not as a playwright and not as a director.”
His two stars Nicholas Galitzine and Taylor Zakhar Perez were not in attendance. As members of SAG-AFTRA “they’re on strike,” López said.
After our conversation, the filmmaker made his way into the Imax auditorium and addressed the audience as director of the film.

On Sunday night, Broadway honored the best live theater of the year at the 76th annual Tony Awards.
At a time of the ongoing Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike, it was a possibility that the ceremony would not happen this year, but the WGA and the Tony Awards’ organizers reached an agreement where the show would not be picketed and the writers would not work on the telecast. The previous time this occurred was in 1988 when Phantom of the Opera and Into the Woods competed for Best Musical.
The Tonys was the first major ceremony to take place amid the current writers’ strike. While other awards shows need a host and numerous presenters to say written remarks about the competitors and provide good ratings, the Tonys already have a built-in fan base that only requires around a dozen performances and winners’ speeches to succeed.

“We’re both rowdy and silly so I think it was pretty clear that you could say whatever you wanted and it would be fine,” says Amber Ruffin of working with writing partner Matthew Lopez on “Some Like it Hot.” “We both have really hard feelings to hurt. So we didn’t really have to do any tiptoeing.” The fast chemistry between the pair allowed them to dive headfirst into writing the book for this new musical, the first time either artist had attempted this type of writing. Though the process was challenging, they had a ball bringing this classic story into a contemporary light. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
