Paul Schrader has long been known for his gruff personality, but he was in good spirits and slightly nostalgic during the Saturday press conference at the Cannes Film Festival for his latest film, Oh, Canada, where he also revealed his next film.
Schrader’s iconic team-up with Martin Scorsese, Taxi Driver, premiered at the festival, and the filmmaker has had several runs at the French fest since. This year’s Cannes sees the return of not only Schrader, but Francis Ford Coppola with Megalopolis and George Lucas, who will be on hand to receive an honorary Palme d’Or.
When asked if, at the time, he knew that he and the other directors that were dubbed “New Hollywood” were changing film forever, Schrader said bluntly: “Yes.”

Paul Schrader had a special job on the set of his latest film, “Oh, Canada”: drawing on the jockstrap that Jacob Elordi wears in one of the Vietnam War drama’s pivotal scenes.
There’s a choice at the heart of “Oh, Canada,” when the fictional filmmaker Leonard Fife dodges the Vietnam draft and escapes to Canada. The script leaves breadcrumbs as to what exactly happens until very late in the film, but finally Elordi is seen reporting for an Army physical. He shows up in a jockstrap with “peace and love” written on the jock, surrounded by tiny flowers. He jitters and shakes and waves his arms flamboyantly. In character, Elordi is attempting to look as unstable as possible to avoid enlisting into military service.
At the Cannes Film Festival press conference for the film, Schrader revealed that he added a finishing touch to the jockstrap that Elordi...

“How can so much suffering have no meaning?”
That’s a question posed by decorated documentary filmmaker Leonard Fife in Paul Schrader’s meandering ode to death, dying, aging, and regret, “Oh, Canada.” It’s inevitably one also felt by audiences who will be left bewildered by the Oscar-nominated filmmaker’s most experimental and alienating work in some time, which loses itself in the process.
With “Oh, Canada,” Schrader splices timelines, color palettes, and aspect ratios to tell Fife’s story as a now-revered nonfiction movie-maker who fled the United States in the late 1960s for Canada to avoid the Vietnam War draft. Schrader is a gifted filmmaker who has given us so much more than “First Reformed” and “The Card Counter,” the only movies audiences of late seem to remember him by. He’s not unfamiliar with unpacking a great and morally complicated artist’s work in wildly subversive...

Paul Schrader’s 1999 adaptation of novelist Russell Banks’ Affliction, led by scorching performances from Nick Nolte and James Coburn, was an unsettlingly bleak meeting of two writers who share a fascination with conflicted morality and complicated relationships pushed to dark extremes. But Schrader’s return to the late author’s work, this time the 2021 novel Foregone, yields fewer rewards. For a film about big themes like mortality, memory, truth and redemption, Oh, Canada feels both slight and stubbornly page-bound, too unsatisfyingly fleshed out to give its actors meat to chew on.
Published two years before Banks’ death in early 2023, the book is an intimate portrait of a man contemplating his legacy while approaching the end of his life. It’s easy to see what drew Schrader to the story, given his own pandemic health scares and the diagnosis of his wife, the actress Mary Beth Hurt, with Alzheimer’s. But...

Straying from the hotheaded “Taxi Driver” style that has dominated much of his career, Paul Schrader pays ruminative and respectful tribute to his late friend, novelist Russell Banks, who gave the writer-director the raw material for one of his best films, “Affliction” — and now, for one of his best films in years. Adapted from Banks’ “Foregone” (and given the title the author told Schrader he wanted for the book), “Oh, Canada” presents a dying artist’s final testimony as a multifaceted film-within-a-film, honoring Banks while also revealing so many of Schrader’s own thoughts on mortality.

Hard to believe it has been 44 years since Paul Schrader and star Richard Gere last worked together on 1980’s seminal American Gigolo, a film that became not just a keystone in Gere’s celebrated career but also one for one Schrader’s as one of his earliest directorial credits. Of course he has written some of the great screenplays, particularly in his collaborations with Martin Scorsese on Raging Bull, The Last Temptation of Christ and Taxi Driver. But it is what interests him now a half century later as a writer-director that continues to fascinate.
In recent years that has included insular works like The Card Counter, Master Gardener and the critically acclaimed First Reformed. Now he has returned to more of what he labels a “mosaic,” in this case a movie made up of pieces of a life put under a cinematic microscope at different periods, all moving in...

What’s your favorite Pulp Fiction scene? There are so, so many to choose from, but did you know the most complicated (and expensive) scene to shoot was one of the movie’s most celebrated, non-violent moments? Indeed, today we break down the iconic Jack Rabbit Slim’s scene from Quentin Tarantino’s smash 1994 hit- Pulp Fiction. The film follows multiple characters that are seemingly unrelated as their paths intertwine in various ways. At the center of the film is Vincent Vega (John Travolta)- a hitman and enforcer for a local crime boss. Vincent is asked by his employer to take his wife out on the town so she doesn’t get lonely while he’s away on business. Enter Mia Wallace (Uma Thurman) as the gorgeous and somewhat mysterious wife.
What ensues is a platonic date that feels like a nice break from the film’s otherwise violent and gritty tone.

Richard Gere and Jacob Elordi star in Paul Schrader’s latest, highly anticipated film ‘Oh, Canada,’ which premieres at the Cannes Film Festival on Friday.
Based on the late Russell Banks’ 2021 novel “Foregone,” the film centers on Gere’s Leonard Fife, an acclaimed filmmaker and “one of 60,000 draft evaders and deserters who fled to Canada to avoid serving in Vietnam” who “shares all his secrets to de-mythologize his mythologized life.” Elordi plays the younger version of Leonard.
In this first-look clip, Gere’s Leonard speeds up to someone’s home, gets out of a car and walks toward the gate. “Amanda was a jazz pianist,” his voiceover begins. “She said she was the mistress of Gerry Mulligan, but he was always on the road.” Then, the footage displays the film’s magic trick, as Elordi’s younger Leonard appears, pushing open the home’s gate and peering in the window,...

Uma Thurman has been to Cannes more times than she can remember, either to pledge support for the glamorous annual charity event amfAR or with films as diverse as the genteel Merchant-Ivory period film The Golden Bowl (2000) and Quentin Tarantino’s ultraviolent Kill Bill: Volume 2 (2004), in which she reprised her badass role as The Bride. The film that propelled her to stardom, Pulp Fiction, won the Palme d’Or there, and Thurman hasn’t forgotten what it did for her. This year, she’s back with Paul Schrader’s Oh, Canada, the kind of smart, character-based indie on which she earned her spurs.
Deadline: How did you get involved with Oh, Canada?
Uma Thurman: Really, I just got the call through my agents to read a Paul Schrader script and meet with him. I’m so glad I did. I love Paul Schrader.

Are we headed for a bon marché?
A new class of finished films and packages (unmade movies with big stars and a director attached) will travel to Cannes this week in search of cash and homes with the studios, streamers and global indie players.
The 2024 Cannes market comes equipped with some interesting contradictions. Stateside, the content buying machine is fraught. Major media stock prices are getting hammered day by day, and a new age of austerity has gripped the once free-spending tech giants. At the same time, distributors paralyzed by the 2023 Hollywood labor strikes need content to fill their slates for the end the year and the top of 2025.
“We’d agree that finished film volume isn’t as high due to the strikes, but Cannes is a much better setting for packages to begin with,” one top sales agent told Variety. “These movies can get financed out of the international marketplace,...

The cast and producers of Red, White & Royal Blue — Prime Video’s breakout movie based on the bestselling novel by Casey McQuiston — acknowledge there is a fantastical element to their hit rom-com that stars Uma Thurman, Nicholas Galitzine and Taylor Zakhar Perez: A female U.S. president. Kenneth Branagh has spent much of his career bringing to life the works of British writers William Shakespeare and Agatha Christie. Now he will not get a chance to play a different famed scribe. Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill films are considered cult classics and amongst the director’s most iconic works. While the two parts of the blood-soaked revenge drama were filmed together, they were released within 6 months of each other owing to the filmmaker’s reluctance to fit the narrative into one film.

Kill Bill: Volume 2 completed 20 years on April 16th, and was a fitting finale to the saga of The Bride played to perfection by Uma Thurman. In an interview a few years ago, Tarantino had a discussion with his lead star and spoke about the scenes he would have hypothetically cut off if he had decided to condense his story into just one film.

Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill series worked magically thanks to the director’s decision to execute the revenge saga over two films.

When the 2024 TCM Classic Film Festival kicked off with a 30th anniversary screening of “Pulp Fiction” on Thursday night, Uma Thurman, Samuel L. Jackson, John Travolta, and Harvey Keitel reunited at the Tcl Chinese Theater to celebrate Quentin Tarantino’s seminal film. But while much of the discussion was devoted to praising Tarantino’s impact on the film industry, Thurman found time to have a laugh about the auteur’s lengthy production processes.
As all four actors recalled their first encounters with Tarantino when he was a young cinephile looking to prove himself in Hollywood, Thurman joked that “Pulp Fiction” was the last time Tarantino made an effort to keep his shoots on schedule and stick to his script.
“I think it was probably the last film Quentin made that was on schedule, where he actually tried to make his days and make his weeks,” Thurman said to laughter from the audience.

The TCM Classic Film Festival kicked off Thursday with a 30th anniversary screening of Pulp Fiction at the Tcl Chinese Theatre. Original castmembers John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson, Uma Thurman and Harvey Keitel reunited to celebrate the film, along with support from Bruce Willis’ wife, Emma, and daughter Tallulah. During a panel before the screening, Travolta described how when he first met Tarantino to discuss the film in the director’s Hollywood apartment, they bonded by playing board games from movies and TV shows that Travolta had starred in.

Michelle Pfeiffer predicted stardom for a young, unknown Keanu Reeves.
That revelation comes as director Stephen Frears joins The Hollywood Reporter‘s It Happened in Hollywood podcast to discuss the making of his 1988 hit, Dangerous Liaisons.
The film starred Glenn Close and John Malkovich, playing conniving aristocrats in pre-French Revolution Paris who manipulate the people around them through sex and deception. Among their victims are characters played by Pfeiffer and Uma Thurman.
Reeves, then 23, was cast as Le Chevalier Danceny, a handsome musician who draws the attention of Close’s Marquise de Merteuil and falls in love with Thurman’s naive ingénue — then duels Malkovich’s Valmont for her honor.
Speaking on the podcast, Frears recalled that Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure was released just months after Dangerous Liaisons, turning Reeves overnight into a major movie star.

Quentin Tarantino is one of the most talented filmmakers in the industry. Turning cinema into a lifestyle; he lives, breathes, and exists in movies. Not only is he an expert when it comes to films from all times, but his own works also reflect a level of understanding of his characters that is very rarely seen. His films can only be called masterpieces, telling stories with so many different layers that a viewer could get lost and end up finding themself.

It can’t be denied that as far as martial arts movies go, the best ones come from Asia, particularly Hong Kong during their action heyday, which was arguably the 70s, 80s and first half of the ’90s. That said, martial arts movies were also making a foothold in the States at the time, thanks mainly to Bruce Lee-mania following the release of Enter the Dragon. Before that movie, very few actors in Hollywood seemed like they were credible martial artists, except maybe James Coburn, a student of Lee’s, who pulled off some pretty good-looking moves in the otherwise silly Our Man Flint movies. Steve McQueen also had training but didn’t use martial arts on screen.
Up to then, though, the most notable uses of martial arts in movies usually revolved around Judo, with James Cagney showing off some good moves in the film Blood on the Sun,...

In 2009, Sally Menke, the splicer extraordinaire who cut her way to film industry prominence as Quentin Tarantino's most trusted collaborator, wrote, "Editors are the quiet heroes of movies and I like it that way." I emphatically agree and disagree with this observation. On one hand, the best film editing is seamless; watching a movie should be an entrancing experience, and it's the editor's job to not break the spell. Yes, there are singular, medium-altering cuts (the entire Odessa Steps sequence in Sergei Eisenstein's silent classic "Potemkin;" the blowing out of a match whisking us off to the desert in David Lean's "Lawrence of Arabia;" the bone-to-spaceship transition in Stanley Kubrick's "2001: A Space Opera"), but they're grand gestures deftly woven into the fabric of the movie. They pull you deeper into their worlds, not take you out of them.
Watch enough movies, however, and you become attuned to certain editorial rhythms.

Ho Ho Ho motherf*ckers! Yup, it’s that time of year again…the giving season. As families everywhere come together to celebrate the holidays, bundle up by the fire, and indulge in a parade of sappy Christmas movies, the real adults in the room are going to need something with a bit more kick. Think about it, the all-time best Christmas movies – It’s a Wonderful Life, Miracle on 34th Street, A Christmas Story, Home Alone, you name it – all revolve around sentimental family-friendly stories for children and adults to enjoy equally. But f*ck all that, Jack, this year we’re all about honoring a bona fide Christmas classic expressly aimed at adult audiences. While Die Hard and Violent Night are worthy action-packed contenders, it’s time to dish out the edible cookies and spiked eggnog for Bad Santa – easily the most politically incorrect and controversially transgressive Christmas comedy on record.

Quentin Tarantino might’ve been a bit too excited when penning his Kill Bill script. So much so that he vowed to never get that wild when writing another movie again.

Tarantino once shared that his writing process for movies changed a bit from his Pulp Fiction days. The director started including a bit more direction with his scripts, which presented a slight problem for Kill Bill. Tarantino realized that he was going a little overboard when fleshing out the feature.

Maya Hawke's portrayal of Robin Buckley, the quirky Hawkins teen who befriends Steve Harrington in the third season of "Stranger Things," quickly made her a fan favorite. Thurman is best known for her roles as Mia in "Pulp Fiction" and The Bride in "Kill Bill: Volume 1" and "Kill Bill: Volume 2." Sometimes, two epic movies full of blood-soaked, sword-fighting, vengeance-driven action just isn't enough. At one point or another, every Quentin Tarantino fan has had the same question cross their minds: When are we ever going to get "Kill Bill 3"? It's been almost exactly 20 years since the first volume landed in theaters, starring Uma Thurman as the Bride cutting a bloody swath through a gauntlet of formidable martial artists in the ultimate revenge fantasy. The beloved throwback to classic samurai movies and gun-slinging Westerns left quite a mark on pop culture upon its release, inspiring endless parodies and notable music videos and no shortage of speculation as to whether Tarantino would ever return to this distinctive world ever again.
As fans are all too aware of, that's been something of a revolving door ever since 2003. Depending on when you asked Tarantino, you'd either be met by enthusiastic excitement and headline-grabbing pronouncements...

When John Travolta dances on the movie screen, people just can’t look away — Saturday Night Fever, of course, is legendary. But was there ever a more amusing Travolta dance sequence than the one he performed in Pulp Fiction? Dragged reluctantly onto the dance stage by Uma Thurman’s character, Travolta and Thurman run through a “greatest hits” of ’60s-era dances while Chuck Berry’s You Never Can Tell plays. Speaking at a fan event a few years back, Travolta explained how the sequence evolved right in front of director Quentin Tarantino’s eyes. Quentin Tarantino had a single epic film in mind when he set out to create what became Kill Bill: Vol. 1 and its follow-up.
The lead character of the Bride originated in conversations between Tarantino and star Uma Thurman during their first collaboration in 1993. “I came up with the idea of doing Kill Bill on the set of Pulp Fiction with Uma,” Tarantino told The Hollywood Reporter in 2003. “‘Bang Bang’ set to Uma for the opening credits was in my mind [back then],” the director said of using Cher’s song “Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)” to open the film, although he later opted for the Nancy Sinatra cover.

'The Kill Room' was rewritten in a day for Samuel L. Jackson.Director Nicol Paone has revealed how finding out Jackson was available meant the script needed reworking just before Christmas to make the character more suited to the Hollywood megastar's style of acting. She told Collider: "That role is really interesting because it was written as Herschel, a 72-year-old Jewish man."And when we were discussing the casting, Uma [Thurman] texted me, 'Is Sam Jackson an option?' And I was like, 'Are you kidding? Of course.'"And so Jonathan and I had a day to rewrite the script before the Christmas break to get it to Sam."Despite needing to do some work over the festive period, Paone admitted it was a "great problem" to be faced with. She added: "I was also meeting my fiancée's family that day over Christmas, and so I basically had to go in,...

An exclusive clip for crime thriller The Kill Room has arrived, reuniting Samuel L. Jackson and Uma Thurman on the cast list for the first time in two decades.
In The Kill Room clip, Uma Thurman’s art dealer Patrice approaches Samuel L. Jackson’s Gordon in a bakery seeking a piece of art she can sell. Gordon is a bit cagey and the two go back and forth on “financial legitimacy”, which seems like an awfully tame term for what they’re about to engage in. This is set up earlier in the movie, when we see Gordon pitching Patrice to sell a piece of art, knowing she has a financial problem that she needs help with. What does Gordon get in return? A cut…and certainly a little something else.

The art world is a cutthroat and judgemental arena. You’re the cat’s pajamas one day, but you’re old news if you take too long to deliver your next masterpiece. Surrounded by snobbery, bitter wine, and diamond-encrusted vultures waiting to pick your talented bones clean, artists endure a lot to remain relevant, and some would even kill for the chance to keep their spot in the public eye. In today’s The Kill Room trailer, a hitman, his boss, and an art dealer concoct a money laundering scheme that accidentally turns an assassin into an overnight avant-garde sensation.
