Lionsgate will handle U.S. distribution of eagerly awaited “Greenland” sequel “Greenland: Migration,” Variety can confirm.
STX, which has a distribution partnership with Lionsgate, is handling international distribution.
Directed by Ric Roman Waugh from a screenplay by Chris Sparling and Mitchell Lafortune, “Greenland: Migration” sees Gerard Butler and Morena Baccarin return as John and Allison Garrity. Along with their diabetic son Nathan, the couple were forced to flee in the first film as a comet hurtled towards earth, threatening to destroy the planet. In the sequel the family embark on a perilous journey across what’s left of Europe to find a new home.
Butler and Baccarin are joined by Roman Griffin Davis (“Jojo Rabbit”), Amber Rose Revah (“The Punisher”) and Trond Fausa (“Oppenheimer”) in the film, which is produced by Anton, STX Entertainment, Thunder Road Pictures and Butler’s G-base Entertainment.

Gerard Butler and Morena Baccarin are returning for Greenland 2, that’s going by the name of Greenland: Migration. More here.
One of the best of Gerard Butler’s most recent outings – and the man has a solid eye for a script – is Greenland, a movie whose release bounced around a little before landing at the end of 2020. That was the year of course when cinemas were shut for the most part, and so very few people got to see Greenland on the big screen.
Still, its video on demand release comfortably got the film into profit, and talk began shortly after of picking up where the first film left off, with a Greenland 2.
Well, Greenland 2 is now Greenland: Migration, and filming is due to start this April.
It’ll reunite Gerard Butler with director Ric Roman Waugh, with whom he’s made Kandahar, Angel Has Fallen and the original Greenland movie.

Though the title Greenland: Migration might lead you to suspect that the sequel to 2020's Gerard Butler starrer is somehow crossing over with the recent animated duck film from Illumination, it's not the case. We'd still watch that, but this Migration promises to instead follow the drama as Butler's John Garrity and his family continue their struggle to survive an apocalyptic situation. The new film is about to start shooting.
You might recall that Greenland saw Butler and Morena Baccarin playing John and his estranged wife Allison as fragments from a comet start to batter the Earth, levelling cities and, in the case of one particularly large chunk, threatening an extinction-level event. Upon learning of a possible safe heaven (the title somewhat gives away the location), the family must make their way there.

In 2020, audiences would watch a global disaster unfold in front of their eyes, and ironically, that year would also bring us the disaster movie Greenland. Ric Roman Waugh’s thriller starred Gerard Butler and Morena Baccarin and follows a family’s struggle to get to emergency proceedings as they’re selected for shelter from the impending doom of a comet hurling toward our planet. Unlike most disaster films, this story was told from the perspective of everyday citizens simply trying to evade the crazy panic of the population in order to seek refuge. Talks of a sequel have been going on for a while and Deadline now reports that Greenland: Migration is set to film this April with the cast returning along with Ric Roman Waugh and screenwriter Chris Sparling. Sparling co-writes this entry with Mitchell Lafortune. The plot, according to Deadline, reads, “The Garrity family must leave the safety...

In big, broad, unsubtle strokes, writer Chris Sparling and veteran director Philip Noyce sketch out the background of the central character, Amy Carr (Naomi Watts), in The Desperate Hour, a spare, sparse suspense-thriller shot during the pandemic utilizing minimal resources. A recently widowed, single mother of two children, Noah ( Colton Gobbo), a sullen, withdrawn teen, and Emily (Sierra Maltby), a seemingly well-adjusted preteen, Amy is struggling with the loss of her husband a year earlier, making her, if not an inattentive mother, then a slightly distant one, isolated by her grief even as she participates in the rituals and rhythms of everyday life. Amy can’t be described as a bad mother, of course, just...

This review of “The Desperate Hour” (formerly known as “Lakewood”) was first published on Sept. 12, 2021 after the film’s premiere at the Toronto Film Festival.
A mom’s morning jog becomes a gimmick running in place in “The Desperate Hour,” a crisis scenario striving for issue-driven importance that should have paid more attention to its dull suspense mechanics, slapdash style, and implausibility.
The estimable Naomi Watts is always in fighting shape for the deep feelings of a peril picture, as her all-in turns in “Funny Games,” “The Impossible” and “The Wolf Hour” attest — hell, throw in “King Kong” too — but as Amy Carr, a widow in the woods and desperate to get to a son in danger, it’s the actress who’s stuck and unable to escape the confines of a cheap trap that only gets more tedious as it goes along.

There’s an incredibly interesting story lurking somewhere beneath “Intrusion,” about the way mistrust and paranoia can slowly chip away at a marriage. The film, however, eschews this tale in favor of something a little more rote, and a little bit trashier. It’s a fun watch, to be sure; as a home invasion movie of sorts, it has a number of thrilling moments, and lead actors . However, the final product also exudes trepidation about its most intriguing aesthetic and narrative elements — ideas which may have only enhanced its genre sensibilities, had the filmmakers further pursued them.

Shooting the thriller “Lakewood” had Naomi Watts really working on her cardio, as director Philip Noyce says that the actress had to run as much as 2 miles in a single take as part of her role in the one-woman thriller.
Shot in rural northern Ontario during the pandemic, “Lakewood” follows Watts as a mother who risks her life to save her child after her small town is placed on lockdown over a school shooting. Much of the film shows Watts running through forest roads to get to the school, which Noyce says became very physically grueling for her.
“There were 11-minute takes where we are all in cars or getting pushed or pulled in front of her but she had to keep going,” Noyce told TheWrap’s Toronto International Film Festival studio. “Another actress might not have been able to turn that negative, the absolute exhaustion, the fear of injuring herself,...

Life is precious, but it's also unpredictable. We may have a plan when we wake up in the morning, but something shifts, and it changes in the blink of an eye. In Lakewood, Phillip Noyce and Chris Sparling demonstrate the unpredictability of life, and Naomi Watts gives an anxiety-ridden, intense performance as a fierce mother attempting to get to her son.
Amy Carr (Naomi Watts) had no intention of taking a personal day. However, on the anniversary of her husband's death, the woman decides to take the day off and go for a run. As she jogs, she makes numerous phone calls to parents, friends, and boss. However, everything quickly turns to dust as the code red alert flashes on her phone's screen: there is an active shooter inside her son's high school. The race against time begins when Amy desperately tries to reach her son, Noah (Colton Gobbo), and save him.

That most horrible -- and American -- of institutions, the school shooting, is the impetus behind "Lakewood," Phillip Noyce's frantic, overblown blend of drama and thriller. The basic concept behind the film -- a mother racing against the clock to get to her child during a shooting -- could yield something potentially great, devastating, and timely in the right hands. But Noyce and screenwriter Chris Sparling are uninterested in that. They merely want to use the shooting as a device and an excuse to have Naomi Watts run around out of breath for an hour and a half. Watts, for her part, does...

In “Lakewood,” Naomi Watts plays Amy Carr, who starts out in the late afternoon jogging through an upscale wooded suburb, mourning her husband’s death in a car crash the year before. The film tells the story of a woman and her partner, her significant other, the second self she can’t live without. The husband, named Peter, was friendly and bearded; we see him in a photo and hear him on a voicemail message, and he sounds like an ideal middle-class protector and mensch. She’s distraught without him.
But that’s not the partner I’m talking about. “Lakewood,” you see, tells the story of a woman and her trusty cell phone. In a way, it’s their love story.

Screenwriter Chris Sparling takes us back to the script that put him on the Hollywood map with Lakewood. Much like his isolated one-man show Buried, his latest focuses on a single character caught in a high-pressure situation with seemingly no way out. Unlike it, however, the real danger is far away from the screen. You see, Amy Carr (Naomi Watts) is safe. She woke up, texted work that she’d be taking a personal day, told the kids to go to school, and set off on a morning run through the forest trails outside her home. Besides a slew of phone calls asking her for favors (and a health check considering the one-year anniversary of her husband’s death is in two days), she’s actually enjoying the peace and quiet.
Director Phillip Noyce gives us a good idea of what the forthcoming drama will entail by having police cars fly by on the road.

There’s been no better time to craft a single-person thriller, especially with the pandemic forcing creators to limit how many people are on set. It also posits a challenge: How does someone maintain suspense with one person for a feature-length amount of time? This question has been answered with features like “Locke” or the Ryan Reynolds-starring “Buried,” another solo thriller written by “Lakewood” screenwriter Chris Sparling.
The elements to make something good are there. Sparling worked with material like this before — much of his filmography is focused on high-concept thrillers with a limited cast. Naomi Watts is usually able to deliver a quality performance. And director Phillip Noyce perfected material like this in the ’90s with “Dead Calm.” Unfortunately, to deliver a “message” that we don’t need to be spelled out for us.

The global pandemic has provided filmmakers opportunities to get creative in order to make films in unusual circumstances. Already at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, we have seen The Guilty with Jake Gyllenhaal in what is essentially a one-man show connected to the outside world simply by a phone in an emergency operations 911 call center.
Now, premiering today at Toronto, comes Naomi Watts as a mother out for a morning jog in the woods whose world comes crashing down as she learns of a school shooting through her only connection, her iPhone. Taking a cue from other films like Locke with Tom Hardy and Buried with Ryan Reynolds, director Phillip Noyce’s new suspense thriller Lakewood is a bit of a genius idea for moviemaking in the age of Covid-19. Take a major Oscar-nominated star, put her in a story that essentially only requires her on camera for...

I’m not entirely convinced everything needs to be a movie. In this case, I don’t know that there is any way to make a film about the journey of a parent as they hear their child’s school has an active shooter without it feeling exploitative of our nation’s current epidemic of violence. That didn’t stop director Phillip Noyce and screenwriter Chris Sparling (“Buried”) from trying.

STX has nabbed worldwide rights to “Greenland: Migration,” a sequel to the 2020 disaster film starring Gerard Butler.
In the biggest deal yet at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, STX shelled out $25 million to roll out the film in the U.S. and Canada and paid another $50 million for international territories. In line with STX’s distribution model, the sequel is being pre-sold to buyers in foreign markets to offset the massive $75 million price tag.
STX distributed the first film, which skipped theaters in the U.S. and debuted directly on premium video-on-demand platforms. The company didn’t disclose rental sales, so it’s unclear how many people watched “Greenland” at home. Outside of North America, “Greenland” played on the big screen in more than 26 countries and collected $52 million at the international box office.
Ric Roman Waugh is returning to direct the follow-up to “Greenland,” with screenwriter Chris Sparling on board to write the script.

Exclusive: In the biggest deal to go down at this year’s Cannes virtual market, STX has beaten out a number of rival bids for worldwide rights to the Gerard Butler action sequel Greenland: Migration.
STX is stumping up around $25 million for domestic rights in a deal cut with Euro producer-seller Anton and CAA Media Finance. Multiple streamers were in the hunt for the movie. STX will also take all of international from Anton in a pact that values foreign at around $50 million.
Anton took the project to the virtual market where it garnered significant interest from indie buyers, but — as often happens on successful franchise fare — STX, which distributed the original movie, had a matching option and was happy to take the plunge. The movie will now run through the studio’s foreign output partners and is being sold to buyers in other markets.

I gotta hand it to director Ric Roman Waugh—I went into Greenland expecting the usual disaster movie fare, and he far exceeded my expectations at every turn. The best compliment that I can give Waugh about what he does in Greenland (with the help of Chris Sparling’s script) is that he not only finds new ways to deliver up catastrophe tropes (or catas-tropes perhaps?) throughout the film, but he also gives viewers a story with a real sense of heart to it that never comes at the expense of immersing us in the enormity of the world-ending scenario at the center of Greenland, either, which is no easy feat. As far as disaster movies go, Greenland is easily one of the best I’ve seen in decades, and I’m so glad I finally caught up with it now.

Leading the charge this week in streaming and specialty titles is Netflix with two films that have been garnering awards season buzz with their star wattage and prestige storytelling.
First up, is the highly anticipated Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom adapted from two-time Pulitzer Prize winner August Wilson’s play of the same name. Set in 1920s Chicago the film spotlights the legendary “Mother of the Blues” Ma Rainey (Viola Davis) and a band of musicians as they have a recording session amidst rising temperatures and tensions.
When the outspoken and fearless Ma arrives late, she has words with her white manager and producer over control of her music. As the band waits in the studio’s claustrophobic rehearsal room, ambitious cornet player Levee (Chadwick Boseman) stirs the pot with his fellow musicians which results in revealing truths that changes the course in all their lives. Once slated to arrive in theaters long before Covid-19 crash-landed in 2020 and upended the entire world, Greenland stars Gerard Butler as John Garrity, an Atlanta-based structural engineer who struggles to save his family as a planet-killing comet speeds toward Earth. Thanks to his skills, Garrity is one of many otherwise ordinary people who have been selected to hole up in massive underground bunkers in the country of Greenland, in the hope that he and others can emerge unscathed and begin rebuilding after the comet wipes the rest of civilization off the face of the globe.
The journey of Garrity, his estranged wife Allison (Morena Baccarin) and their diabetic son Nathan (Roger Dale Floyd) as they try to reach an Air Force base and catch one of those flights to Greenland is the driving force of the film. The human melodrama is front and center, with the havoc caused by chunks...

You can count the days on one hand now. Less than a week before the biggest holiday on the calendar, the one that brings families together. Yes, Christmas unites families as does imminent disaster (as the frequent lockdowns of the pandemic have proven). But what if we’re talking about mere hours, rather than these extended quarantine periods? Could you somehow set aside everything to fight the panicked throngs and get your loved ones to a place of somewhat uncertain safety? That’s the challenge facing the Garrity’s in this Earth-shaking (literally) new dramatic thriller. Perhaps their only chance of survival exists across the Atlantic in Greenland.

Gerard Butler’s screen career of late has been all about saving presidents and warding off geostorms, but “Greenland” throws an extinction event in the actor’s path that’s so apocalyptic, the best he can do is try to get himself and his family to safety.
The fact that a rain of comets has no jaw for Butler to punch makes it one of his more engaging vehicles of late, particularly since director Ric Roman Waugh feels more at home making a disaster epic than he did with his previous collaboration with the actor, the ludicrous “Angel Has Fallen.” It’s a specific skill set to find individual stakes against a backdrop of mass destruction, but the filmmaker finds moments of humanity as the doomsday clock ticks down.

Exclusive: Gerard Butler’s latest action thriller Greenland will not be playing at U.S. movie theaters as the pic’s studio ErosSTX pivots the feature for a Premium Video On-Demand release sometime in the fourth quarter.
STX will control the PVOD window on the Ric Roman Waugh-directed movie. Additionally, we can tell you first, that HBO has shelled out a whopping $20M-$30M for Greenland‘s pay TV and streaming in the U.S. where the movie will debut on the pay-cable TV network and stream on HBO Max in early 2021.
That’s a huge deal, bigger than HBO’s global $17.5M acquisition out of TIFF last year for the Hugh Jackman-Allison Janney drama Bad Education, which recently went on to win Outstanding Television Movie at the Primetime Emmys. It speaks to the intense competition in the market right now among the digital players.
