Season 17 of “American Idol” ended on May 19. Will the new winner enjoy more success than the 2018 champion, Maddie Poppe? After all, she didn’t even get a chance to perform on this year’s finale despite releasing her first album, “Whirlwind,” just two days prior. What a contrast to the early days of the show, when the previous season’s winner was always showcased on the episode that unveiled the new winner of the franchise.
This Emmy-winning reality competition series began in 2002, For more than a decade, it was a ratings powerhouse with many of those winners enjoying some success. The first-ever champ, Kelly Clarkson, has won three Grammys and turned her fame into a string of hit records and an ongoing gig as a judge on the competition, NBC’s’ “The Voice.” And season 4 winner Carrie Underwood has done even better, having sold upwards of records and won a shelf load of music awards.

Adam Rippon, Josh Norman, and Tonya Harding went toe to toe in a dance-off for the Mirrorball trophy on Dancing With the Stars: Athletes Season 26 Episode 4.
Honestly, I thought the shortened, blink and you missed it, season would be more fun, but it's actually been exhausting, and I'm not even dancing.
However, I enjoyed the lack of filler. I'd prefer to get straight to the dancing, and that's what this abbreviated season did. On the downside, there were definitely dancers I wish had gotten more of a chance to grow, especially Arike Ogunbowale.

Although many fans were outraged by last week's ouster of figure skater Mirai Nigasu, I have to say that I loved this final three. Every dance blew me away, except for one ... and that one shocked me.
So let's get on with the dancing!

The one-hour finale of “Dancing with the Stars: Athletes” is on Monday, May 21 and will air live beginning at 7 p.m. Ct/8 p.m. Et. The three sports stars still in the running – Olympic figure skaters Tonya Harding and Adam Rippon as well as NFL player Josh Norman — will each take to the dance floor twice during a jam-packed 60-minute show.
Their first dance will be inspired by their time on “DWTS.” Harding and her partner Sasha Farber will glide through a Viennese Waltz set to the song “The Time of My Life” by David Cook. After completing a 14 year, 15 season run of being the pianist, arranger, vocal coach and associate musical director of “American Idol,” Michael Orland is back in the hot seat for the ABC reboot — and feels reborn.
“Are you loving this new season as much as I am?” Orland asks Variety.
The truth is, Orland relishes his role assisting the kids through auditions, Hollywood Week, and now the live episodes, which will air every Sunday night through next month’s May 20 and 21 season finale and the crowning of the new Idol.
“I literally love these kids. I really am having so much fun with this Top 10 right now,” he says. “Was I disappointed in the results? Yes, I thought there were a couple of people missing, even from Top 24, that I was sad to see go. But, that’s how attached we become as the vocal coaches. We become so attached to the contestants,...

Just two years after it was cancelled by Fox, “American Idol” returns to ABC on March 11. When this reality competition series hit the airwaves back in 2002, it was a ratings smash, and many of its early winners enjoyed huge success. Indeed, its first-ever champ, Kelly Clarkson, has won three Grammys and parlayed her fame into a string of hit records and a new gig as a judge on the competition, NBC’s’ “The Voice.”
However, many of the more recent music newcomers to be named “American Idol” have found that their time in the spotlight is fleeting. In the photo gallery above, we take a look back at the first 15 “American Idol” winners to date and see how many have been lucky so far and which have been jinxed.
