When Toby Keith died of cancer on Feb. 5 at age 62, the country world mourned the loss of one of its biggest stars. Notching 20 No. 1 songs on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and the Country Airplay chart, Keith was an uncompromising, often controversial figure who followed his own arrow and remained a consistent presence in the genre for three decades.
So when the 2024 CMT Music Awards took over the Moody Center in Austin, Texas, on Sunday, it went without saying that the planned tribute to Keith would be one of the night’s highlights.
Led by Keith’s longtime friends Brooks & Dunn and Sammy Hagar as well as Lainey Wilson, whom Keith mentored, the tribute was supported by Keith’s longtime backing band.
Baseball legend Roger Clemens introduced the performance, calling Keith “a true friend and patriot.” Clemens noted that in recent years, as Keith was “battling that damn C-word,...

Brooks & Dunn, Sammy Hagar, and Lainey Wilson performed a tribute to Toby Keith at the 2024 CMT Music Awards on Sunday, backed by members of Keith’s longtime band. Keith died in February at 62 after a long battle with stomach cancer.
Brooks & Dunn kicked it off with a rendition of “Should’ve Been a Cowboy,” Keith’s 1993 debut single and his very first Number One hit. Hagar, a longtime friend of Keith’s, followed with “I Love This Bar,” a fitting choice for the tequila and rum impresario, who famously...

Lainey Wilson delivered a fun and easygoing rendition of her recent single “Country’s Cool Again” at the 2024 CMT Awards this Sunday.
Dressed in fringe pants and a matching vest, and with her hair in long braids beneath her cowboy hat, Wilson twirled and spun her way through the audience, exuding the charisma that helped her win Entertainer of the Year at the 2023 CMA Awards. It was an especially soulful performance, with elements of the country-funk that defined her latest album, Bell Bottom Country.
Can confirm: "Country's Cool Again" after @laineywilson hit the #CMTAwards stage!

Dolly Parton honored Tom Petty with a gorgeous cover of his 1985 song, “Southern Accents,” which will appear on the upcoming tribute compilation Petty Country: A Country Music Celebration of Tom Petty.
“Southern Accents” is a tender ballad about Southern roots and a down-on-his luck Florida orange-picker. Parton stays faithful to the original, adding her own country twang, and juicing the poignancy further with a music video filled with old archival footage of Petty.
“I was fortunate enough to get to know Tom over the years,” Parton said in a statement.

Dolly Parton has revealed her reimagined rendition of Tom Petty’s song “Southern Accents” for the forthcoming compilation, Petty Country: A Country Music Celebration of Tom Petty.
The song features a prologue delivered by the late Tom Petty himself describing how the moment of inspiration that led to “Southern Accents.” Dolly Parton then provides an emotional, stirring rendition of the song, kept at the same balladeer tempo as Petty’s original. She retains much of the song, though she adds a crucial change to the song’s latter third when belting “Yes I’m proud to be what I am/ A southern girl from a southern town/ I ain’t ashamed, I ain’t ashamed, I ain’t ashamed.”

Toby Keith, whose history with the CMT Music Awards goes back to having co-hosted the earliest incarnation of the show, will get his due in the wake of his recent death, as an all-star salute is planned for Keith on Sunday night’s three-hour CBS telecast.
The tribute will feature performances by one of the hottest figures in country music, Lainey Wilson, along with his fellow industry veterans Brooks & Dunn, whose Ronnie Dunn is a fellow Okie. Rocker Sammy Hagar, who featured Keith on an episode of his TV series “Rock & Roll Road Trip” in 2022, will join the lineup paying homage.
Set for what’s being billed as special appearances saluting the late singer are Lukas Nelson and Roger Clemens. Nelson’s father, Willie, had a smash duet with Keith, “Beer for My Horses.” Baseball legend Roger Clemens’ friendship with Keith included the singer inducting the ballplayer into the Houston Sports Hall of Fame.

Fans learned the news on Sunday’s (February 18) Season 22 premiere, when a teaser reel for the upcoming episodes revealed a snippet of Russell’s audition. “My grandma’s a country singer,” the aspiring singer says as she introduces herself to the judges, per Taste of Country. “Your grandma is — what?!” judge Lionel Richie responds. Viewers might already be familiar with Russell from her grandmother’s public memorial service, Coal Miner’s Daughter: A Celebration Of The Life & Music of Loretta Lynn, which aired on CMT in 2022. Russell performed a heartfelt rendition of “Lay Me Down” with Willie Nelson‘s son, Lukas Nelson, at the event at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville. Willie Nelson is now officially a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Just don’t ask him what he has to do with rock & roll. “It’s been a long ride from my first DJ job to being here with y’all,” he said during his acceptance speech. “And as a DJ, I was playing those first songs by Elvis. I remember writers calling that ‘rockabilly’ rather than rock & roll, and I never did pay much attention to categories, and I’m not sure the fans did either.

You know you are music royalty when Keith Richards shows up to pay his respects. And the Rolling Stones icon was on hand Sunday for the second and final night of Willie Nelson’s epic, 90th birthday concert at the Hollywood Bowl.
At 79, Richards was the youngster in this pairing of living legends, and the two harmonized sweetly on two songs: Waylon Jennings’ “We Had It All” and the late outlaw Billy Joe Shaver’s “Live Forever,” particularly poignant with its refrain, “Just like the songs I leave behind me / I’m gonna live forever, now.”
The Richards surprise came shortly after 10:00 p.m. on this cool, overcast night in the hills above Hollywood, nearly three-and-a-half hours into the evening’s celebration.
