- Commanded the Navy spy ship USS Pueblo, which was seized by North Korea in 1968. Bucher and his crew endured 11 months of captivity and torture.
- Orphaned as a child by the deaths of his adoptive parents (who changed his name to Lloyd Marvin Bucher), he was living at the St. Joseph's Children Home in Idaho when he saw "Boys Town." Bucher wrote to Edward Flanagan, and asked if he could live there. Flanagan responded by sending him a train ticket.
