[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for The Good Doctor series finale.] Freddie Highmore‘s Dr. Shaun Murphy will always be out there somewhere helping people heal. That was the main message The Good Doctor creators wanted to deliver in the May 21 series finale, and they did that through a time jump that revealed how Shaun and Dr. Claire Browne’s (Antonia Thomas) careers evolved after the events of the finale — and what memorable events they were. Shaun was determined to craft a miraculous solution to Dr. Aaron Glassman (Richard Schiff) and Claire’s cancer cases, but Glassman refused treatment. Rather than spend his final months undergoing potentially painful medical procedures, Glassman chose to make the most of the six months he had left. Since he was leaving his job because of his prognosis, Glassman performed Shaun and Charlie’s (Kayla Cromer) non-Fda approved experimental treatment on Claire. Glassman no doubt lost his medical license because of this,...

After seven seasons, “The Good Doctor” came to a heart-rending conclusion, emotionally devastating the dedicated fans who signed on to say so long to Dr. Shaun Murphy and the rest of the cast and crew who populated San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital.
Variety talked with series star Freddie Highmore (Dr. Shaun Murphy) about saying farewell to the creators and actors he’s shared laborious science monologues and anxiety-inducing surgical scenes with for seven years.
What was the very last scene that you shot as Dr. Shaun Murphy?
The last scene that I filmed was the one where, ultimately, Leah sits down next to Shaun and then talks him into going to becoming aware, I guess, of the situation facing both Claire and Dr. Glassman. That motivates him in the short term to go and speak to Claire [Antonia Thomas] and then come to terms with the fact that Glassman will...

Being loyal to a show is hard when it’s not something that lasts for just a couple of seasons. The storylines change, characters come and go, unsatisfying resolutions happen all the time, making fans start hating what they used to love dearly.
The same happened with The Good Doctor fans several times during the course of the show. The Good Doctor premiered on ABC in 2017 and became a hit immediately because of the unusual premise.
At the center of the medical drama is a young man named Shaun Murphy who suffers from autistic disorder and savant syndrome, but pursues his dream of becoming a surgeon anyway. And succeeds!
For 7 seasons, with the latest season premiering in 2024 and confirmed to be the last, Shaun is shown with many other characters like his mentor Dr. Aaron Glassman and doctors Marcus Andrews and Audrey Lim are going through a lot of drama.

The Good Doctor, a medical drama with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’s star Freddie Highmore in the leading role, has recently concluded its 7-year-old television run with seven seasons in total.
Despite numerous complaints about the finale as a whole, the show has nonetheless ended it all on a relatively good note concerning one specific matter the representation of which many found extremely offensive.
The plot initially follows young autistic surgeon Shaun Murphy who ends up getting a job in a prestigious hospital in California after moving there from a small town where he had not the best time. The Good Doctor gradually shows Shaun’s personal evolution and big developments in his career when he eventually becomes the one to teach young doctors instead of just being one of them.

The Good Doctor has never shied away from complex subjects during its run.
The show's premise is that autistic doctor Shaun Murphy (Freddie Highmore) struggles to gain acceptance from his peers. Yet, he perseveres by proving he can become a surgeon.
From the beginning, most viewers have agreed that it is excellent for shows to highlight more autistic characters. The debate is concerning how those characters should be portrayed.
When The Good Doctor premiered on September 25, 2017, it immediately struck a chord among viewers who were glad to see an autistic main character on a television series. It is now airing its seventh and final season, and viewer reactions to it have varied widely as the series has progressed.
The autistic community has been particularly vocal regarding both positive moments and apparent missteps by the show's writers.

The Good Doctor returns for one final season, and spoilers suggest it'll be more like the way it used to be.
In recent years, the show has morphed into a relationship drama centered around Shaun and Lea's constant clashes, with some Glassman drama thrown in.
There will still be plenty of that on The Good Doctor Season 7 Episode 1, but those subplots appear to be mixed into a solid medical storyline.
According to spoilers, Morgan's baby needs a new heart valve -- and someone else's needs the same thing.
This set-up reminds me of years ago on Chicago Hope when Mandy Patinkin's character wanted to use a brain-dead baby's heart to save another child, but the mother wasn't ready to admit her newborn had no chance of survival.
But in this case, one of the mothers is Morgan, and both mothers have a baby who is alive but struggling.

The Good Doctor is bringing two new doctors to San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital. Everything’s Gonna Be Okay star Kayla Cromer and Unsolved‘s Wavyy Jonez have been cast in Season 7, the ABC drama’s final season. Cromer is the first person with autism to play an autistic character in a series regular role on American television. She crossed the milestone in Everything’s Gonna Be Okay, and her casting in The Good Doctor continues her history of bringing autism representation to TV. Jonez smashed on to the scene when he booked the role of The Notorious Big (Biggie Smalls) in USA‘s limited series Unsolved opposite Josh Duhamel. Cromer will be playing the role of Charlene “Charlie” Lukaitis and Jonez will be playing the role of Dominick “Dom” Hubank. Dom and Charlie are medical students on their first surgical rotations — eager to learn, but raw and untested in the fast-paced world of St.

Kayla Cromer (Everything’s Gonna Be Okay) and and Wavyy Jonez (Unsolved) will join ABC’s The Good Doctor in its final season.
Cromer will recur as Charlene ‘Charlie’ Lukaitis, a third-year medical student who’s excited both for this rotation and the chance to work with her hero, Dr. Shaun Murphy (Freddie Highmore). Like Shaun, she has Autism Spectrum Disorder, and she has idolized him since she first saw the viral video of him saving a boy’s life at the San Jose airport. Empowered and energetic, her passion for surgery may only be matched by her love for Taylor Swift.
Jonez will play Dominick ‘Dom’ Hubank, another third-year med student who is hoping this surgical rotation is just a box to check on his way to become the family doctor in his underserved community. But this former football player learns he isn’t as tough as he appears when...

“Diversity” is undoubtedly a buzzword in Hollywood, but the inclusion of people with disabilities behind and in front of the camera remains an overlooked topic in the industry.
At Variety‘s inaugural Inclusion Gathering, presented by the Ruderman Family Foundation at West Hollywood’s London Hotel on Nov. 2, industry creatives and executives gathered for breakfast and a series of conversations centered around the topic of disabilities and inclusion in Hollywood.
The first conversation, “Disabilities in Storytelling,” was moderated by Tim Gray, executive vice president, Golden Globes, and featured Ashley Eakin, director of Disney’s “Growing Up” and Apple TV+’s “Best Foot Forward”; Angela Kang, showrunner and executive producer of “The Walking Dead”; David Renaud, co-executive producer of “The Good Doctor”; Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, executive producer, creator and showrunner of “The Witcher”; and Kaitlynn Yang, CEO, visual effects supervisor on “American Born Chinese.”

Where to Watch ‘Everything’s Gonna Be Okay’: Hulu (The series originally aired on Freeform.)
The pilot for “Everything’s Gonna Be Okay” is still a marvel. What it accomplishes in such a short time — setting up a new family dynamic between Nicholas (Josh Thomas) and his two younger half-sisters (Kayla Cromer and Maeve Press) after their father dies unexpectedly — is paired so expertly with a perfect balance in tone. It’s more than your standard “there’s comedy in every tragedy” premise, where characters laugh through their grief. Watching that first episode, you can’t help but feel that something special is starting.
For two seasons, the intertwined lives of Nicholas, Matilda, and Genevieve powered their own emotional universe. Along with Nicholas’ eventual boyfriend Alex (Adam Faison), they formed the basis for the kind of show that could have easily stayed inside its cozy,...

The Ruderman Family Foundation selected five more recipients of its Seal of Authentic Representation: Fox’s “9-1-1,” Apple TV Plus’s “Coda,” Freeform’s “Everything’s Gonna Be Okay” and Netflix’s “Never Have I Ever” and “The One.”
Marlee Matlin, who is one of the stars of “Coda,” has also received the Ruderman Family Foundation’s Morton E. Ruderman Award in Inclusion for her lifelong activism for people with disabilities.
“Full inclusiveness and authentic representation is so important to me,” Matlin said in a statement. “My first theatrical film, ‘Children of a Lesser God,’ was the first to star a Deaf actor in a leading role. Though it has been 34 years, ‘Coda’ has broken barriers in the feature world just like my first film, this time featuring not one but three Deaf actors in leading roles, playing each authentically. Everything’S Gonna Be Okay
It was a glorious spring for small-batch comedies (running between six and 10 episodes) that balance tricky tones. I’m singling out Josh Thomas’ Freeform series — a bittersweet, snarky and sincere portrait of a gay 20-something Aussie and his American half-sisters — for the performances by Kayla Cromer and Maeve Press. During a pre-recorded Atx panel airing Saturday, Ramy actor Steve Way slammed the Motion Picture Academy for its failure to provide all necessary accommodations for the disabled, prior to this year’s Academy Awards, where a wheelchair ramp was introduced for the first time.
“At this year’s Oscars, we got a ramp, we got an Asl interpreter—for one segment—and everyone’s like, ‘Oh my god, this is great,’” Way said. “It’s progress, yes. But you’re also admitting that for the past 31 years, the [Academy] has been violating federal law by not having a ramp and interpreters.”
A ramp was introduced at the 93rd Oscars as a means of access to the stage for James LeBrecht, the co-director of Crip Camp, who uses a wheelchair. Unfortunately, as actor Ryan J. Haddad (The Politician) noted during the panel, the ramp may have only been added, given LeBrecht’s own assertiveness.

The delayed Season 2 of Everything’s Gonna Be Okay finally bowed in April, marking the return of the Freeform comedy created and executive produced by and starring Australian comedian Josh Thomas.
Thanks to the production shutdown because of the pandemic, the series’ planned arc for its sophomore season had to change. The result is a more introspective story in Okay, which centers on Thomas’ Nicholas, a twentysomething entomologist from Australia raising his two teenage half-sisters Matilda (Kayla Cromer) and Genevieve (Maeve Press) after the death of their father. Matilda is autistic — and by the end of Episode 209, “Carolina Spinx Moth,” it’s becoming clear Nicholas might be too.
The script, penned by Allison Lyman & Thomas, is part of Deadline’s It Starts On the Page, the series that highlights the scripts that will serve as the creative backbones...

Television series’ depictions of single parents isn’t all that different from what viewers imagine, or have experienced, it to be. Struggling adults attempting to juggle a stable career while doubling as the book report editor, dinner maker and support system that their kids need isn’t exactly new. But the twist now is that scripted programming is putting the spotlight on single dads.
Comedies ranging from NBC’s “Mr. Mayor” and “Kenan,” to CBS’ “United States of Al” and “B Positive,” to Netflix’s “Dad Stop Embarrassing Me!” have lead characters who are single dads — albeit ones who maybe get by thanks to their entourages of quirky friends, relatives or coworkers.
“I personally like shows, even in comedies, that still feel like they’re about something,” says “Kenan” co-creator Jackie Clarke, who, like the daughters of lead Kenan Thompson’s similarly-named character on her show, spent part of her...

Heading into Season 2 of Everything’s Gonna Be Okay, creator, executive producer and star Josh Thomas was trying to figure out the best way to address the Covid-19 pandemic in the context of a Freeform comedy.
“We were trying to work out whether people would want to go back to being in the pandemic, by the time the show went to air in April,” Thomas said during the series’ panel at Deadline’s virtual Contenders Television awards-season event. “We were like, ‘Once everybody’s out there living their lives, are they really going to want to revisit this time?’ It’s just so crazy to look back on, isn’t it?”
Also starring Kayla Cromer, Maeve Press and Adam Faison, Everything’s Gonna Be Okay centers on Nicholas, an Australian who agrees to look after his two Los-Angeles-based half-sisters following their father’s untimely death.

There are multiple times over the first three episodes of Season 2 of “Everything’s Gonna Be Okay” when Nicholas is talking to his mother and he puts her on mute to talk to someone else. The first time it’s played for a tiny grace note laugh, but by the time it happens again, it’s more a quick shorthand for a complicated intercontinental relationship.
In just a handful of beats, it tells any viewer that Nicholas (played by series writer and creator Josh Thomas) is the kind of person who can hold multiple conversations at a time (when he wants to), he’s often driven by impulse, and that — all the way from Australia — Penny (Vivienne Walshe) is looking to unburden her own anxieties just as much as Nicholas is avoiding having to take any on.
That’s the flavor of simple economical character work that “Everything’s Gonna Be Okay” thrives on.

News has an exclusive first look at the new trailer for the comedy's second season, which finds Nicholas (Josh Thomas) and his sisters dealing with the death of their father. They first try to do that by writing heartfelt letters to him, though Nicholas misunderstands the assignment and just writes, "Dad yay." "Are we bad people?" wonders Matilda (Kayla Cromer), and her sister Genevieve (Maeve Press) is not saying no. "Just so much pressure!" Meanwhile, Matilda got into Juilliard and...

Have we ever been in more need of a laugh than in 2020? Amidst a historic global pandemic, a tumultuous American political election, civil unrest, wildfires, Murder Horne… alright, you get the picture. 2020 has been the pits, man. Thankfully, this year from hell featured some bright spots on television, even if rays of sunshine were sorely lacking in reality.
If the shows on our list weren’t making us laugh, we would have been ugly-crying since March. While we were all locked in our homes, we got reacclimated with the Warner Brothers (and sister), said goodbye to BoJack Horseman, and met regular human bartender Jackie Daytona, making quarantine a bit more bearable, if only in 30 minute increments. From brand new series like How To with John Wilson, to swan songs for Den of Geek favorites like Schitt’s Creek, TV comedies in 2020 kept us cackling through the chaos.

2020 was a year when many turned to television to distract and soothe.
And, against all odds, television — most of it made in the pre-covid-19 era, only to debut in a landscape where the world had irreparably changed — delivered an opportunity to escape and relate. Long derided as the pedestrian sibling of the entertainment landscape, it was the medium’s very quality of immediate accessibility that allowed it to shine at a time when nothing was certain and nothing made sense.
Below, in alphabetical order, are the shows — not limited series, chill out chess freaks who are already scrolling for “The Queen’s Gambit” — that debuted in this brave new world. Below you’ll find stories that inspired, engaged — and don’t dismiss the importance of this last one — entertained. It’s not just Peak TV, It’s Peak Cataclysm TV.
