The devil was in the detail when it came to 1987’s superb The Untouchables – and that included the suite where Robert De Niro’s Al Capone lived.
With a price tag of $25m in an era when that felt like a reasonable amount of money for a major Hollywood studio to spend, Paramount Pictures’ 1987 hit The Untouchables was really something of a gamble.
>Granted, it was a gamble mitigated by the presence of some star wattage. Still, Robert De Niro in the role of Al Capone was a man more known for attracting strong critical notices than packing the house out. Sean Connery meanwhile was far from at the height of his commercial pulling powers.
Throw in the fact that director Brian De Palma was desperately needing a hit after a run of box office disappointments and that the picture’s star – Kevin Costner – was pretty much an unknown at this stage,...

Fluff your powdered wig and fill your snuffbox because a trailer for French filmmaker Maïwenn’s Jeanne Du Barry is here to give you a front-row seat to one of history’s most notorious scandals. The lavish footage depicts Johnny Depp as Louis Xv and Maïwenn Besco as Jeanne Vaubernier, a woman willing to give a gloved middle finger to tradition to rise through society’s ranks. Decadent, scandalous, and filled with more drama than a season of Bridgerton, today’s Jeanne Du Barry trailer highlights Depp’s first significant feature since his public court battle with his ex-wife Amber Heard.
Here’s the official synopsis for Jeanne Du Barry:
“Jeanne du Barry follows Jeanne Vaubernier (Maïwenn), a working-class woman determined to climb the social ladder, using her charms to escape her impoverished life. Her lover, the Comte du Barry (Melvil Poupaud), wishes to present her to King Louis Xv...

Leading French producer Michael Gentile’s Paris-based outfit The Film is about to start shooting Julie Delpy’s next directorial outing, “The Barbarians,” and Laurence Arné’s “Les Hennedricks” starring Dany Boon.
Delpy’s comeback to French filmmaking since “Lolo,” “The Barbarians” is a satirical comedy unfolding in a small town in Brittany which is preparing to welcome Ukrainian refugees after voting unanimously to greet them in exchange for subsidies from the government. But instead of seeing Ukrainians come into town, they see Syrian refugees, causing some tensions among locals and testing their liberal beliefs. Delpy will star in the film opposite Sandrine Kiberlain (“Mademoiselle Chambon”), Laurent Lafitte (“Elle”) and Ziad Bakri (“The Weekend Away”), India Hair (“Angry Annie”), Mathieu Demy (“The Bureau”) and Delpy’s father Albert Delpy.
Delpy penned the script with Matthieu Rumani (“Family Business”), in collaboration with Lea Domenech (“Bernadette”). “The Barbarians” will start filming on...

Johnny Depp was 40 minutes late to the press conference for “Jeanne du Barry,” the period drama that opened the Cannes Film Festival on Tuesday night. Depp was stuck in traffic, according to a source close to his team, forcing the event to start 27 minutes behind schedule and without him.
He also missed the earlier photo call with director and star Maïwenn and the rest of the cast of “Jeanne du Barry” due to the gridlock along the Croisette. Photographers were told that Depp would return to take pictures later in the afternoon.
When he arrived at 12:41 p.m. (the conference was called for noon), everyone seated at the presser was able to hear cheers and applause before he walked into the room. When he got there, he expressed his appreciation for Tuesday’s premiere of “Jeanne du Barry.” A night earlier, the embattled actor held back tears as the audience embraced the film,...

When director Chris McKay was making “Renfield” he turned to production designer Alec Hammond (“Donnie Darko”) to help deliver a fresh and updated take on the Dracula story, by taking “a big monster movie, rooting it in the classic movies, but subverting any expectations.”
The film starring Nicolas Cage as Dracula and Nicholas Hoult as his faithful sidekick Renfield, begins in 1931, in black-and-white. It was important, Hammond says, to set up Cage’s world in the historic context of harkening back to classic Dracula movies before jumping to the present day.
The Charity Hospital in New Orleans, which had been abandoned since Hurricane Katrina, was the perfect location for Hammond to set Dracula and Renfield’s modern-day lair.
Hammond says, “Its exterior looks like Dracula’s castle and so we maintain the silhouette from those classic movies. The history of the city was reflected in the structure, it looks like...

Upon her father’s death, King George VI, Princess Elizabeth, became Queen Elizabeth II. Elizabeth was a young mother of two children when taking on this important role in the United Kingdom. However, she wanted her young son, Prince Charles, to feel special when, in 1953, she stepped into the role she would eventually hold for over 70 years. She gifted the then-4-year-old with a child-friendly coronation invitation.

From being one of the longest-reigning monarchs in history to how many corgis she had over the course of her life, here are 10 things to know about the late queen, who died “peacefully” on Thursday at 96.
Britain’s Longest-Reigning Monarch
Elizabeth, who marked 70 years on the throne this year, is the oldest and longest-reigning monarch in British history. In September 2015 she surpassed her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria, who reigned for 63 years and seven months.
In 2016, Elizabeth also became the longest-reigning monarch in the world with the death of King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand. In 2022, she became the second-longest-reigning monarch in world history, behind 17th century French King Louis Xiv, who took the throne at age 4.
Apart from Elizabeth and Victoria, only four other monarchs in British history have reigned for 50 years or more: George III (59 years), Henry III (56 years), Edward III (50 years) and James VI of Scotland (58 years.

Queen Elizabeth II has died at the age of 96, the royal family confirmed on Sept. 8.
In a statement on Buckingham Palace's website, the family said: "The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow." The sad news comes after Buckingham Palace released a statement earlier in the day confirming concerns about the Queen's health. Her family had rushed to her side.
Elizabeth dealt with a number of health issues in the past year, including a Covid-19 diagnosis in February 2022.
Per the BBC, Elizabeth was the second-longest-ruling monarch in history, reigning for over 70 years. King Louis Xiv of France had the longest reign, ruling for 72 years and 110 days. The good news is that Pacifiction, the latest feature from Catalan auteur Albert Serra, who’s only in his 40s but directs like a grand old man of the 1960s avant-garde, is quite watchable, even sort of plot-driven — for a Serra film.
It’s got a fun central performance from Benoît Magimel and a spectacular Tahitian location. There’s even a surfing scene, the closest Serra may have ever gotten to an action sequence. On the other hand, it is still a 162-minute slog. And that aforementioned plot is a very attenuated, listless creature, telling a murky — in every sense — tale of political intrigue and municipal power struggles that refuses to be resolved or reveal any mysteries by the end. It’s like a Polynesian version of Chinatown but made by a cast and crew stoned on rum and ketamine. Forget it, Jake, it’s Papeete.

This might be one for the development hell record books: "The King's Daughter" finally hit theaters today, seven years after its initial planned release. The movie, which is based on a 1997 novel called "The Moon and the Sun," made its theatrical debut this weekend, with only $750,000 to show for it (per BoxOfficeMojo).
While plenty of perfectly good movies get shelved for reasons beyond their control, this doesn't seem to be the case with "The King's Daughter." Directed by Sean McNamara, the film follows King Louis Xiv (Pierce Brosnan in a very bad wig) as he attempts to, as far...

"The creature! In the water... she called to me." Gravitas Ventures has unveiled an official trailer for The King's Daughter, arriving in theaters nationwide in January. This sounds a bit like a swashbuckling live-action Little Mermaid, but with some different twists to it. King Louis Xiv's quest for immortality leads him to capture and steal a mermaid's life force, a move that is further complicated by his illegitimate daughter's discovery of the creature. She forms a bond with the mermaid and fights to protect her from harm at great cost. The main cast features Pierce Brosnan, Kaya Scodelario, Benjamin Walker, Rachel Griffiths, William Hurt, and Fan Bingbing as the mermaid. Narrated by Julie Andrews. This looks like it could either be ravishing, or a complete mess. Up to you to decide if it looks like it's worth watching, or skipping. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Sean McNamara's The King's Daughter,...

It must not be an easy feat to play your own twin, but a surprising amount of actors have done it. From Lindsay Lohan in “The Parent Trap” to Paul Rudd in Netflix’s “Living With Yourself” to Mark Ruffalo in HBO’s new series “I Know This Much Is True” here are 19 stars who have played their own twins, clones, and even split-personalities on TV and in movies.
Lindsay Lohan – “The Parent Trap,” “I Know Who Killed Me” Pretty much everyone is familiar with Lohan’s iconic role in ‘The Parent Trap’ remake, but few are familiar with her much more grown-up, darker role in this 2007 psychological thriller in which her she plays two very different versions of a girl named Aubrey Fleming.
Mark Ruffalo – “I Know This Much Is True” He plays twins Dominick and Thomas Birdsey in the HBO series, the latter of whom is schizophrenic.

In today’s film news roundup, “40 Years of Rocky” gets a release date, Pierce Brosnan’s “The King’s Daughter” finds a home and the 2020 Lower East Side Film Festival unveils its programming.
Release Date
Virgil Films has set a June 9 digital release date for the documentary “40 Years of Rocky,” which chronicles the behind-the-scenes journey of the 1976 classic “Rocky.”
Sylvester Stallone recounts the making of the film — which won the 1977 Academy Award for Best Picture — through rare home movies filmed by “Rocky” director John G. Avildsen. The documentary was written and directed by Derek Wayne Johnson, who served as co-producer with Chris May of Cinema 83 Entertainment and Cinema 83 Documentary Films.
“The documentary is a golden nugget for ‘Rocky’ fans and casual audiences alike,” said Johnson. “It’s a charming piece of film history narrated by Rocky himself, Sylvester Stallone, and will give audiences an intimate, and at times, emotional experience.

The Evolution of Leonardo DiCaprio: From ‘Growing Pains’ to ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’ (Photos)
For nearly 30 years, Leonardo DiCaprio has managed to maintain an image as a handsome, Hollywood heartthrob and as one of the industry’s most bankable and pedigreed performers. While he’s consistently been at the top of the A-list, the roles DiCaprio has taken have changed dramatically. In “Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood,” DiCaprio lends his star power to help Quentin Tarantino shape a new Tinsel Town legend. Here’s how the actor has evolved over the years:
“Growing Pains” (1991)
After guest starring on “Roseanne” and “Parenthood,” DiCaprio landed a role on the long-running sitcom “Growing Pains.” He played Luke Brower, a homeless student in the class of young school teacher Mike (Kirk Cameron) that the Seaver family take in until he is reunited with his father.

When I was 14 years old and first knew I was transgender, the only Lgbtq+ history I knew about was Stonewall, the AIDS crisis, and recent acts of violence and discrimination against the gay community. That's pretty discouraging when you're a scared and confused queer kid, now convinced your future will be full of prejudice and bigotry. Since I didn't like learning history much in school, I'd go home and watch TV shows or read books all about it. To this day, my bookshelf is lined with historical nonfiction, despite the degree I'm studying having nothing to do with history.
So, when I discovered Versailles - I caught my parents watching an early episode of season three here in the UK - I immediately fell in love with the breathtaking scenery and glamorous costumes, watching people who lived and breathed live and breathe all over again right on my screen.

The New York Film Festival’s Projections section is filled to the brim with the avant-garde, and this year’s lineup is no exception. Tsai Ming-liang’s Your Face is composed entirely of silent close-ups, while Albert Serra’s Roi Soleil is an hour of King Louis Xiv moaning and writhing. The former feels like a museum exhibit; the […]
