Update, 3:08 Pm: Apple CEO Tim Cook’s X post on the much condemned “Crush” ad for the new iPad Pro has been viewed around 53 million times and the in-house produced promo is still on the tech giant’s YouTube page, but Apple is now saying sorry.
“Our goal is to always celebrate the myriad of ways users express themselves and bring their ideas to life through iPad,” Apple marketing kingpin Tor Myhren told Ad Age today as the backlash intensified. “We missed the mark with this video, and we’re sorry.”
Well, maybe not that sorry – as after two days they still haven’t taken the literally and figuratively destructive ad down.
Previously May 8 Am: Apple’s new iPad Pro isn’t hitting the shelves for another week, but the self-described “thinnest Apple product yet” is already being crushed because of a new ad.

The battle of Lopez vs. Lopez will continue: NBC has renewed the sitcom starring George Lopez and Mayan Lopez for a third season, TVLine has learned. The network has also handed a series order to the Reba McEntire sitcom Happy’s Place.
Season-to-date, Lopez vs. Lopez is averaging 2.3 million total viewers and a 0.3 demo rating (with Live+7 playback), nearly right on par with its Season 1 numbers. Out of the three sitcoms that NBC has aired this TV season, it ranks last behind the already-renewed Night Court‘s second season (3.8 mil/0.4) and the freshman laffer Extended Family (3.2 mil/0.4), which was cancelled on Tuesday as well.

Prior to creating the hit absurdist sitcom "Night Court," Reinhold Weege was a writer on "Barney Miller" and on "M*A*S*H," for which he received a grand reputation in American television. "Night Court," however, launched him into the stratosphere, as the show was part of the invaluable NBC Thursday night lineup that revolutionized television. "Night Court" came at the end of a block of programming that included "The Cosby Show" (which was responsible for saving "Night Court"), "Cheers," and "Family Ties," and the four sitcoms collectively buoyed the network to new heights. The series was nominated for 12 Emmys during its 1984 to 1992 run, with four wins going to star John Larroquette.
Despite the success of the show, Weege remained an affable, unglamorous, street-level bloke, flaunting his Chicago roots with pride. In the 2022 book "Barney Miller and the Files Of the Ol' One-Two" by Otto W. Bruno, Weege preferred presenting himself as low-fi and unassuming,...

Television shows seem well-organized and choreographed. Yet, not everything about them always goes according to plan.
For example, an incidental character sometimes steals a scene and creates memorable television history.
Then, there are the characters who take things a step further by stealing scenes repeatedly until they become the stars themselves.
Particular characters, such as Dr. Gregory House on House, are often created to be standouts. Yet, occasionally, those main protagonists are entirely overshadowed.
In rare instances, characters who were supposed to be incidental became regulars and took over entire shows.
The Fonz on Happy Days (1974-1984)
Happy Days underwent several changes, including the recasting and eventual disappearance of Chuck Cunningham's character, but Arthur (The Fonz) Fonzarelli's addition most dramatically altered the show's trajectory.
Initially, Happy Days focused on the Cunningham family, especially teenager Richie (Ron Howard). The Fonz (Henry Winkler) was a side character. However, the motorcycle-riding, leather jacket-wearing greaser soon took over.

It was a movie with a questionable title. A lot of critics were rough on it. Gene Siskel even called it one of the worst movies of the year. It came and went in theatres with few movie-goers paying any attention. But in the years since its release, it has become a beloved cult classic, with a legion of fans that love quoting its memorable lines. Some of its youngest viewers were drawn in by what they saw as a wish fulfillment concept: What would you do if the babysitter croaked on the first day of your mom’s vacation… so you had the house to yourself for two months straight? We get to see what the Crandall kids would do in the 1991 comedy Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead – and it’s time for this one to be Revisited.

Throughout her illustrious run in the realm of music, Taylor Swift has cemented herself as one of, if not the biggest pop icon of the 21st century and has amassed an enormous following. But like every massive fandom, a part of the Swifties community is toxic as well, who often go out of their way to retaliate against anyone who dares to speak ill of the Cats star.
Michael J. Fox, whose opinion of Swift has changed drastically over the years, once found himself amidst heavy fire from the Swifties in 2013 following his initial remarks on the pop icon.

Michael J. Fox became a household name when he starred as the protagonist Marty McFly in Robert Zemeckis’ sci-fi comedy Back to the Future. While the actor was not the first choice for the role, he replaced actor Eric Stoltz who had already begun filming for the movie. Fox has now become synonymous with the role and starred in two more sequels.
Before he became known for his role in Back to the Future and the sitcom Family Ties, Michael J. Fox was reportedly at the worst of his finances. He revealed once that his situation was so bad that he used to check at dumpsters for food because he could not afford it. However, once he bagged the roles of his lifetime, there was no turning back.

Michael J. Fox is sharing his thoughts on how Hollywood has changed over the decades.
In a recent interview with People magazine, the Emmy-winning actor, who rose to fame in the 1980s following his roles in Palmerstown U.S.A., Night Court, Family Ties and Back to the Future, compared the entertainment industry now to when he got his start.
“There’s an expression I referred to when they gave me an honorary Academy Award — somebody said to me the day before, they were talking about getting this award and being famous and they said ‘You’re ‘80s famous,’” Fox recalled. “I thought, wow, that’s cool. ‘80s famous. Right, we were different.”
He added, “We were tougher. We didn’t have social media, we didn’t have any of that crap. We were just famous. Left to our own resources. And it was an amazing time.”

Michael J. Fox has reflected on what it was like to be “’80s Famous,” and feels that he had to be “tougher” to achieve that level of fame.

Michael J. Fox was a heartthrob back in the ’80s and ’90s thanks to his many memorable roles in the Back To The Future series, Teen Wolf, The Hard Way, Life with Mikey, and more. The actor’s memorable performances and down-to-earth personality earned him a huge fan following.
Hence, many hearts across the world were broken when he revealed his Parkinson’s diagnosis in 1998. However, the actor had been secretly fighting the progressive degenerative disorder for seven years at that point. Despite his disease, the actor appeared in many hit projects throughout the 2000s and 2010s. He was a regular in the CBS drama series The Good Wife which aired from 2010 to 2016.
However, in 2020, the star announced his retirement from onscreen work. The decision came due to Parkinson’s impacting his ability to memorize and remember lines. Now, four years later, he is willing to return to acting under one sole condition.

Michael J. Fox’s retirement from acting might not be permanent. The actor recently told Entertainment Tonight that he’d be open to returning to the profession bearing the right role. The “Back to the Future” and “Family Ties” star stepped back from acting in 2020 as his Parkinson’s disease made it increasingly difficult to remember dialogue.

Wil Wheaton landed his first professional acting gig in 1981, appearing in the TV movie "A Long Way Home." He was nine years old. Wheaton was impressive enough to become one of Hollywood's more in-demand child actors, and the next five years of his life were immensely busy. He appeared in films like "The Defiant Ones" and "The Last Starfighter," and TV shows like "Highway to Heaven," "Family Ties," and "St. Elsewhere." It was nothing but an upward arc for the young performer.
Wheaton's first leading role came in 1986 with the release of Rob Reiner's 1950s nostalgia piece "Stand By Me," an adaptation of the Stephen King novella "The Body." In "Stand By Me," Wheaton played 12-year-old Gordie Lachance, a kid smarting from the recent death of his older brother and the familial resentment it caused. The original "Night Court" ran for 193 episodes over nine seasons. It was part of a magical Thursday-night lineup of sitcoms -- along with "Family Ties," "The Cosby Show," and "Cheers" -- that dominated the popular consciousness throughout the 1980s. "Night Court" was considered "the weird one" of that lineup, but it was no less popular, earning star John Larroquette four Emmys before he intentionally withdrew himself from consideration. Since its cancelation in 1992, "Night Court" has remained beloved by the people who initially saw it, and subsequent reruns have grown a few new fans along the way.
Sometime in 2019 or 2020, however, a revival of "Night Court" was floated to NBC, and they began developing the new series that debuted on their network in 2023. The "Night Court" revival saw the return of Larroquette as Dan Fielding, the once-lascivious-now-humbled prosecutor who served the night shifts at the Manhattan Criminal Court. If, like me, you grew up on "The Simpsons" you'll no doubt recall the show's relentless mockery of the Fox Network. When the Simpsons weren't stomping on the Fox logo in couch gags, the show was depicting the network censor being murdered during the intro to a "Treehouse of Horror" episode. Growing up in England, this constant Fox-bashing was a bit of a mystery to me. What did "The Simpsons" have against this American network that literally aired their show, anyway? Well, it turns out there was more to it than the writers getting ticked off with censor notes or having it out for Fox owner Rupert Murdoch.
In the 1980s, TV was dominated by three major networks: NBC, ABC, and CBS. That had been the status quo for decades before News Corp. owner Rupert Murdoch decided to shake things up, launching the Fox Broadcasting Company on October 9, 1986, as a...

"Night Court" was part of the legendary NBC Thursday night lineup back in the mid-1980s. It ran in a block with "The Cosby Show," "Cheers," and "Family Ties," a proud part of a sitcom renaissance that lasted through to the end of the decade. Of that lineup, "Night Court" was the black sheep, offering up broader characters, wackier scenarios, and a surrealist tone that kept it just a few steps removed from reality. The series was set in a Manhattan Criminal Court, but only during its night shift, when all the weird cases came in. Harry Anderson played Judge Harry Stone, although the late hours had made him playfully unbalanced. Also often on the night shift was prosecutor Dan Fielding (John Larroquette), a lascivious narcissist and amusingly crude a-hole.

Up until 2014, the public at large didn't know about the extent of sexual crimes committed by comedian and TV star Bill Cosby. Since 2014, over 60 women have come forward with allegations of sexual assault, some of which stretch back to the 1960s. The many, many details of Cosby's assaults, cover-ups, and other crimes have been openly detailed in the news, and in the 2022 documentary series "We Need to Talk About Cosby."
Cosby's crimes make discussions of the hit series "The Cosby Show" a little fraught. Because the stories of sexual assault hadn't been made public yet, Cosby was easily accepted by mainstream sitcom viewers as a kindly, father-like figure: a perfectly put-upon patriarch of a modern, wealthy Black family. "The Cosby Show" was instantly successful and widely beloved when it debuted in 1984, and it lasted eight seasons and 201 episodes. Everyone watched it. The NBC sitcom "Night Court" was a satirical take on the zany and chaotic underworld of the midnight shift at the courthouse. With an unconventional, free-loving judge at the helm of this circus, there's no telling what might happen. The series was such a massive hit that it ran for nine whole seasons, featuring a cast of relatively unknown actors that, when assembled, formed one of the most acclaimed ensembles of all time. The show won eight Primetime Emmys and was nominated no less than 32 times. "Night Court" won in a variety of categories, but the actor that ended up taking home the most gold was John Larroquette, who played egotistical D.A. Dan Fielding.
A "Night Court" reboot landed on NBC in 2023. Sadly, few members of the original cast are still around to reprise their old roles, and the show is comprised almost entirely of new characters. Harry Anderson,...

Lamar performed at the Visa Cash App Rb Formula One Team 2024 season launch in Sin City, working the stage built like a catwalk on Thursday night. Wearing a suit and bright neon sneakers with a pic in his hair, he ran through a number of his hit songs, including “Humble,” “Alright,” “Bitch, Don’t Kill My Vibe,” “Swimming Pools (Drank),” “Loyalty,” “Money Trees,” “Love” and “DNA.”
“Vegas, what the fuck is up?” he said at the top of his performance.

Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie tells the story of Fox’s career and battle with Parkinson’s disease. Director Davis Guggenheim directed the film and interviewed Fox. Though Guggenheim had final cut, he was worried Fox would ask him to remove some archival material that didn’t reflect well on him.
“It was after Back to the Future opened, after Teen Wolf opened,” Guggenheim said at Deadline’s Contenders Film: Documentary. “So he had the top two films in the country which was unheard of, and was returning to Family Ties, the number one comedy. There’s this footage of him shot behind the scenes. He’s being kind of a jerk.”
Fortunately, to Guggenheim’s surprise, Fox was all for it.

Actors are in favor of the new contract its guild has won from the studios, though not without some dissent among the ranks. SAG-AFTRA members have voted in favor of ratifying the new deal, with 78.33 percent of members who participated voting to approve the contract. The strike is officially over.
The guild said on December 5 that of the 38.15 percent voter turnout, 21.67 percent voted “No.” That’s far from the near-unanimous support with which WGA members ratified the writers deal earlier this fall. But in 2020, the last time the SAG-AFTRA contract came up for ratification, the actors union saw a turnout of just 27.15 percent of its members; 74.22 percent voted to approve it.
Actors will now work under this contract until June 30, 2026.
“I’m proud of our SAG-AFTRA membership,” said SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher in a statment sent to press. “They struck for 118 days to grant the TV/Theatrical Negotiating Committee the...

Updated: SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher on Monday scolded “naysayers” and “contrarians” who have criticized the union’s new contract.
Drescher defended the agreement during a Zoom meeting for SAG-AFTRA members on Monday morning.
“Sadly there have been some naysayers who have exploited this momentum of ours,” Drescher said, appearing in a jungle-print bathrobe from her home. She said that throughout the negotiation, some people have “tried to tear down what was being done in the negotiating committee.”
The negotiating team reached a tentative deal last Wednesday that ended the union’s 118-day strike. The union’s national board approved the deal on an 86% vote on Friday, and sent it to the members for ratification.
The ratification process began Monday with the Zoom meeting to spell out the terms of the deal and take questions. More than 1,000 questions were submitted, and the union is expected to hold further meetings.

The news that SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP reached a tentative deal to resolve the actors strike that brought Hollywood to a halt was met with celebrations from most actors in the industry. But Justine Bateman isn’t ready to rejoice just yet.
The “Family Ties” star and filmmaker, who has spent much of the past year speaking out against the use of AI in creative industries, took to X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday to express her objections to the agreement. While guild leaders have touted the “robust” AI protections in the deal, including rules that require studios to notify and compensate actors whenever their digitally scanned likeness is used in a film or TV show, Bateman says the actual deal doesn’t go far enough.
“I will be taking the actual deal document (and not the ‘summary’ SAG is planning to release) and explaining the violating AI permissions the AMPTP will have over you,...

Michael J. Fox, who’s lived with Parkinson’s disease for more than 30 years, told CBS News that he’s always dealing with depression. But, he noted, he still finds ways to stay positive.
The “Back to the Future” and “Family Ties” actor was asked by “CBS Mornings” cohost Nate Burleson if he ever has moments where he battles depression or uncertainty.
“Yesterday at 3:57 in the afternoon,” Fox, 62, darkly quipped. “I mean, always.”
Parkinson’s is a progressive brain disorder that affects both movement and speech. Fox was first diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 1991 at 29 years old. There is no cure.
“The positivity is really sincere. I really feel it, and it’s genuine” Fox said. “But it’s hard-fought, and it’s hard won, I should say. This fear, we can find ways to just give ourselves a break, give ourselves credit for getting through life, on life’s terms.

Michael J. Fox has been incredibly candid in his diagnosis, handling and living with Parkinson’s disease, which he was diagnosed with in 1991, just two years after his breakout show Family Ties went off the air. While he didn’t make it public until 1998, Fox has now been an active proponent in championing the ongoing fight against it both for himself and others. But now that he is in his 60s, he knows he has to confront something we all will, just perhaps differently: death. But no, Michael J. Fox does not fear it.
In a new interview with Town & Country, Michael J. Fox revealed, “One day I’ll run out of gas…One day I’ll just say, ‘It’s not going to happen. I’m not going out today.’ If that comes, I’ll allow myself that. I’m 62 years old. Certainly, if I were to pass away tomorrow,...

The cast of Friends used collective bargaining to level out their salaries. As an ensemble cast, they wanted to be treated as equals as their wages grew from $22K per episode to $1M. Each cast member of Friends earned around $90 million in base salary alone from the show before the addition of any backend bonuses and ongoing royalties from syndication, racking each actor up an impressive net worth. For 10 seasons, the Friends cast was considered the gold standard of sitcom television, but where do they stand financially today? Here is the net worth of the Friends cast ranked from richest to poorest.

The 1980s were a junky era for film and television. Once the studios and networks figured out what kinds of formulas American audiences were keen on after Vietnam, Watergate, and the election of Ronald Reagan reshaped the country's psyche, they exploited them relentlessly. One particularly reliable genre of sorts was the gung-ho, men-on-a-mission actioner where outnumbered, yet armed-to-the-teeth heroes resourcefully defeated equally well-armed bad guys.
When these projects were made for the big screen, studios piled on the red meat. Scads of folks got shot, stabbed, and blown up, and the directors didn't skimp on the viscera. These were the hardest of the hard R-rated movies of the decade, and they made heaps of money.
At a network level, television was still cinema's less-appreciated little brother in the 1980s. Sitcoms were king, while hour-long dramas tended toward soapiness or murder-of-the-week mysteries. There were very fine shows that worked within these parameters,...

Land of Talk today shared “Sitcom,” the silken third single off their forthcoming new album Performances, due out this Friday via Saddle Creek, alongside a video directed by Ana-Maria Espino Trudel. “A lot of my love of music is just from long car rides with my dad listening to Christopher Cross, Fine Young Cannibals, and Whitney Houston. He’s not a musician but I feel like I’m almost having a conversation with my dad through a lot of my records,” explains Lizzie Powell, the creative force behind Land of Talk. “Recently, I got into a really big Christopher Cross phase. On this song, I thought I could try to write like that. I was also watching a lot of Family Ties and older sitcoms. The keys part kind of evoked that classic TV intro from the ‘70s and ‘80s.”

Artist-turned-actor Sylvester Stallone will have a retrospective of his original paintings and art pieces at the Toronto Film Festival, starting today.
The exhibit with mixed-media art, writings and memorabilia by the Rocky and Expendables star will run throughout TIFF, leading up to the world premiere of Netflix’s Stallone documentary Sly that is set to close the Toronto festival on Sept. 16 with a gala screening.
The Bell Lightbox exhibit features 12 original paintings and art pieces created by Stallone from 1975 to 2020. Most are abstract, with vivid paintbrush swirls enveloping images of boxers and commentary on Hollywood fame and royalty. One work, Family Ties, depicts a pregnant mother and a distant father and illustrates the artist’s use of a limited color palette of black, white and red.

People often say never meet your heroes, but “Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie” editor Michael Harte absolutely couldn’t wait to meet one of his. When Oscar-winning documentary filmmaker Davis Guggenheim (“An Inconvenient Truth”) ended up needing an editor for AppleTV+’s in-depth film profile of the Parkinson’s cure advocate and “Family Ties” and “Back to the Future” star, Harte accelerated his interest almost to the tune of 88 miles per hour.
“I was working on the documentary “Three Identical Strangers,” and we wanted the first act of that to feel like a 1980s movie,” said the BAFTA-winning Harte of that 2018 Oscar-nominated doc about a notable group of separated male triplets who reconnect later in life. “So, we were watching a lot of Michael J. This story about “Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie” first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Comedy/Variety/Reality/Nonfiction issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
The last time Davis Guggenheim interviewed Michael J. Fox for the documentary “Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie,” it came at the end of a three-year period in which the filmmaker of “An Inconvenient Truth” and “Waiting for ‘Superman’” had spent time with the actor as he reflected on his life and battled Parkinson’s disease. He left Fox’s home exhausted by the lengthy interview — “interviews are super intense and I’m hyper-focused” — but also feeling as if he’d really gotten to know the 62-year-old actor who’d become a star in his 20s with “Family Ties” and “Back to the Future.”
It was a beautiful spring day, so Guggenheim decided to walk back to his hotel, which was two miles away.

Of every beloved film from the 1980’s, there are perhaps none more beloved by my inner-child than 1985’s Back To The Future. The film was written by Bob Gale and Robert Zemeckis- Zemeckis also being the film’s director. While we can look back on Robert Zemeckis’ career today and see a wide variety of quality across his filmography, at the time Back To The Future was being made there was no one better for the massive undertaking of bringing this sci-fi adventure movie to audiences.
Of course, the making of this film was riddled with re-writes, re-shoots, and even massive recasting. Famously, Eric Stoltz was cast in the role of the film’s main character- Marty McFly. Through filming, Stoltz turned in a darker and more moody performance that lacked the youthful charm that Zemeckis was looking for. This led to Stoltz being fired from the film mid-way...

Law.” It had the kind of ratings no one could even dream of now, since cable (much less streaming) had yet to become a major prime time force. John Larroquette was the toast of TV portraying “Night Court’s” assistant Da Dan Fielding. He was snappy. He was overbearing. He was a shameless womanizer. He was hilarious. And voting members of the TV academy agreed, bestowing four straight Emmy Awards on Larroquette for supporting actor in a comedy. Not nominations. Wins. He took home Emmys for four consecutive years and was favored to make it five in a row when the actor did something no one could have predicted.
He decided he was done and withdrew his name from consideration.
