There are times when I don’t have much to say here. I read a book, I mostly liked it, I’ve already read a number of things by the same creator, I don’t have anything particularly new or specific to say this time.
And that sounds so horribly minimizing, doesn’t it?
But “this is good stuff, in line with the same person’s previous good stuff” is actually very positive.
So, with that caveat: I just read Noah Van Sciver’s 2016 collection of comics short stories, Disquiet . It’s a general, miscellaneous collection – everything I’ve seen from him previously has been more focused, from the graphic novels Fante Bukowski and Saint Cole to the self-explanatorily themed As a Cartoonist collection.
But this one is just some stories and art Van Sciver did, over about the previous five years, collected between two covers and assembled into a plausible order.

This year has already proved it’s fruitful in high-class horror movies that bring new motifs and techniques to the genre or address its classics. Earlier in 2024 we saw such gems as Late Night with the Devil, Infested, Abigail, Immaculate and The First Omen.
However, there is one movie that is a rare guest of the year’s best horror lists, but it certainly deserves our attention. It is also proved by the fact it is now holding the third place in HBO’s global top and is gaining more and more viewership on the platform.
The plot revolves around Gwen, a young woman who takes up a job at a remote motel. While working her first night shift there, she starts suspecting she’s not alone in the hallways, and there is a character from her troubled past watching her. However, Gwen is quick to realize that it’s...

Although Phoebe Tonkin was in the 2012 shark thriller Bait and the high profile 2022 flop Babylon, most viewers probably know her from her work in television: she has been on multiple episodes H2O: Just Add Water, Home and Away, The Secret Circle, The Vampire Diaries, The Originals, Westworld, Safe Harbour, and more. I just finished watching a Netflix series she was in, Boy Swallows Universe, which I thought was pretty great. Now Tonkin has the lead role in a thriller called Night Shift, which just received a VOD and limited theatrical release today, courtesy of Quiver Distribution. To help you figure out whether or not Night Shift is a movie you’d like to see, we have a clip and the film’s trailer embedded above.

“Question not my judgment, Malachai. I am the giver of His word.”
It’s the summer of 1984. The pavement is hot, the corn is high, and the eerie voices of children can be heard singing in a distant barn. Something sinister walks behind the rows. Is it a cult of killer children ripped from the Old Testament? Is a vengeful deity who demands human sacrifice? Is it a roving mound of dirt speeding through the corn or a loud little girl who draws in her sleep? In the latest episode of The Long Watch, The Losers’ Club will pick up their scythes and venture into the fragrant fields to unearth the secrets of Fritz Kiersch’s Children of the Corn.
Burt (Peter Horton) and Vicky (Linda Hamilton) are driving across the country when a detour off the main highway takes them straight through a never ending sea of corn. When...

I would have expected the new indie anthology film Beware the Boogeyman to have come out a while back, closer to the release of the widely hyped Stephen King adaptation, The Boogeyman. The inspiration is obvious, one scene even has a character holding a copy of Night Shift, the collection of King’s stories that brought it to most people’s attention. In any case, it’s out now and wants you to believe in it.

Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band have added a new date to their North American tour.
After their Phoenix, Arizona, show on March 14, they will go to Las Vegas on March 22 to perform at the T-Mobile Arena.
Last September, tour dates were forced to reschedule after Springsteen’s peptic ulcer disease. Shortly after announcing the rescheduled U.S. dates, concert dates for Canada were also declared.
Springsteen began his music career in 1964, but his popularity didn’t rise until 1975, when he and the E Street Band did a ten-show stand over five nights in New York City. Rolling Stone later included the performances in their “50 Moments That Change Rock and Roll” list.
The current tour is scheduled to run until November 22, 2024, in Vancouver, Canada.

General Hospital is getting a revamp behind the scenes.
It’s been a decade of the same on the ABC soap, with only a few minor changes to the writing and producing team.

In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week we look at Lucy Dacus' Night Shift, directed by Jane Schoenbrun. It is no secret I identify as queer. This part of my identity gives me an advantage when it comes to interpreting works by other queer artists. I have had many conversations with cis straight friends about mainstream or semi-mainstream arthouse films that are big staples in queer culture, where they didn't get 'it', whatever that 'it' was. One of my favorite conversations was with a cis straight friend who found Jane Schoenbrun's We're All Going To The World's Fair tedious and boring. He wasn't watching the same film I was. In recent years, Kevin Costner has been seen less on the big screens and more on his television series “Yellowstone,” currently bringing astounding ratings to the Paramount Network. Westerns have been good to Costner at the movies, with his most successful winning him two Oscars as producer and director of “Dances with Wolves” in 1990.
Costner almost had a career that ended before it really started. After very small roles in a number of big films such as Ron Howard’s “Night Shift” and the Jessica Lange vehicle “Frances” Costner then got what could have been a star-making role. However, his role as a suicide victim in flashback scenes for “The Big Chill” was cut by director Lawrence Kasdan. The same director wou would later make it up to Costner by casting him in a showy role in the film “Silverado.”

Realizing they needed a voice over actor to provide the narration for a new show in development called Arrested Development, producer Ron Howard looked around the empty recording studio, finding no voice over actor in sight. So this Oscar winning former child star stepped in to provide a temporary voice track, you know just as a filler until they could find a better voice, of course. But a better voice never came because Ron Howard’s comforting and gentle tone mixed with a dry yet kinda goofy speech pattern was the perfect fit for the sense of humor of this show. But this was not the only time Ron Howard stepped up and became an unexpected perfect fit, he’s been doing that all his life – from being in front of the camera in classic TV shows and behind the camera for a hefty handful of wonderful motion pictures… and more!

There’s no doubting that the budgets and ambitions of music videos have dwindled since the glory days of MTV. We live in the age of TikTok-targeted ephemera. Yet miraculously, 2023 gave a much-needed shot of cinematic life to the form.
The best videos of the year emphasized meticulous technique over virality, offering intimate, impressionistic portraits of their respective artists’ interior lives and thoughts. Lana Del Rey and Lucy Dacus subverted Old Hollywood tropes, with a meta riff on studio system-era glamor and a lesbian tweaking of Wizard of Oz, respectively.
Others went bigger. Troye Sivan brought back the sheen and unabashed sexuality of Y2K pop princesses with a drag transformation that represents the performance of his career to date. Doja Cat took a maximalist approach to portraying the simultaneous highs and horrors of stardom, while Olivia Rodrigo constructed an elaborate, blood-splattered supernatural story to rival The Lost Boys.

For over 40 years, Stephen King has had his “Dollar Baby” program in place, allowing filmmakers to acquire the rights to turn any of his short stories into a movie for the cost of just $1. Unfortunately, the Dollar Baby program has now been disbanded, with its end confirmed on King’s official website: “The Dollar Baby Program was disbanded in December 2023. Contracts issued before December 2023 will be honored and will remain approved for one year from their instantiation, as per the terms of their contract. There will be no Dollar Baby extensions after December 1st, 2023.“
On his X account, King explained that the Dollar Baby program is no more because “Margaret, the Mistress of Dollar Babies, is retiring.“
Here’s how King described the Dollar Baby program in the 1996 introduction he wrote for the published screenplay for Frank Darabont’s The Shawshank Redemption, which was based on his novella Rita Hayworth...

The following contains major spoilers for the short story “I Know What You Need.”
Ever since Brian De Palma’s Carrie set fire to the silver screen, Stephen King has been one of the hottest names in cinematic horror. With hundreds of titles in his extensive catalog, there’s seemingly no end to the list of adaptable text. King’s stories exist in all iterations of film and TV, from big-budget blockbusters to intimate indie films, but you didn’t always need the backing of a major studio to take a crack at an adaptation. For many years, the Master of Horror sold the limited rights to a select list of short stories for the affordable price of $1.
Affectionately called Dollar Babies, this arrangement allowed burgeoning filmmakers to try their hand at adapting the work of Stephen King without blowing most of their budget on expensive licensing fees. One such director is Julia Marchese.

Say it once, say it twice — but say it a third time and expect an explosion of chaotic supernatural hilarity. That was the premise of "Beetlejuice," the second feature film from director Tim Burton. Released in 1988, the film focused on newly dead couple Adam and Barbara Maitland (Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis), whose quaint country house was posthumously sold to Charles and Delia Deetz (Jeffrey Jones and Catherine O'Hara). Adam and Barbara, however, remain in their home, as ghosts, horrified by the bizarre architectural changes being made to their beloved home by its obnoxious new owners. Taking advice from "The Handbook for the Recently Deceased," the Maitlands attempt to haunt their unwanted roommates into leaving — a tactic that proves unsuccessful when the Deetzes remain utterly oblivious to their efforts to scare them out.
The Deetz's death-obsessed teenage daughter, Lydia (Winona Ryder), can see the Maitlands, and befriends them. Just when all seems hopeless,...

The Epix television show Chapelwaite was described as being a ten episode limited series that would tell the story of Stephen King’s short story Jerusalem‘s Lot, which was a prequel to his novel Salem’s Lot… but after the show’s run came to an end, it was announced that Chapelwaite season 2 was in the works. While the first season had covered the entirety of King’s story, in its own way, the second season was going to go beyond the source material to tell its own original story. But things have changed in the year and half since it appeared that Chapelwaite season 2 was a sure thing, and now showrunner Jason Filardi has taken to social media to confirm that the new season isn’t going to happen after all.

Rob Savage makes scary movies.
After smashing his way into the horror scene with the pandemic chiller "Host" and the divisive horror comedy "Dashcam," Savage made his first major studio movie earlier this year with "The Boogeyman," an adaptation of the Stephen King story of the same name. And while it was a sleeper hit at the box office, the most exciting aspect of the film was that it proved Savage could take on a much bigger movie without losing his edge. This is a frightening film, one coated in dread and literal darkness, with a story just as interested in its shattered characters as its unsettling monster. Some horror directors abandon their spark when they work on a bigger, more expensive studio project. It looks like Savage thrives.
"The Boogeyman" is now available on home video, and to mark the occasion, I sat down with Savage over Zoom to talk about the film,...

Hello. Alright. Okay. You have opened this article because that headline offers a promise of the correct order to watch the sprawling "Children of the Corn" franchise, a horror series that spans nine films in the core canon, plus two completely separate remakes of the original (each re-telling the original Stephen King short story), for a grand total of 11 movies. Before you go any further, let this be your warning: This is one of the worst horror franchises out there, and even the best films in the series are largely unwatchable compared to other horror series with similar longevity. By planning to watch all "Children of the Corn" movies, you are planning to embark on several days' worth of headaches as you try to suss out "What the heck were they thinking?" with each entry. You're going to have a bad time.

This article contains spoilers for Our Flag Means Death season 1.
The sitcom Our Flag Means Death has behaved in a very piratey way, quite frankly. When it burst onto the scene last year, it unexpectedly plundered fans’ hearts, leaving their new favorite ship – between Rhys Darby as Stede Bonnet and Taika Waititi as Blackbeard – wrecked, and left us stranded on a cliffhanger of a finale desperate for a second series.
Thankfully, the treasure that is season two of Our Flag Means Death is released on Max on Oct. 5, and it’s as adorable as ever, with a whole crew of new characters to fall in love with:
Let’s meet the new characters, and discover which returning cast members are back:

The first trailer for “Our Flag Means Death” Season 2 has arrived, and it’s full of old romances and new characters.
The show picks up right where Season 1 left off. “Our Flag Means Death” will follow Gentleman Pirate captain Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby) as he tries to reunite his crew and apologize to his best friend and new love, Ed, aka Blackbeard (Taika Waititi).
After a near-death experience, Season 1 ended with Stede choosing to return to his old life and wife rather than sail away with Ed. It wasn’t a rejection that the notoriously violent Blackbeard took well and that’s set to be a main crux of this new season.
In addition to Darby and Waititi, Season 2 stars returning cast members Samson Kayo, Vico Ortiz, Ewen Bremner, Joel Fry, Matthew Maher, Kristian Nairn, Con O’Neill, David Fane, Samba Schutte, Nat Faxon and Leslie Jones.

Few experiences in rock compare with seeing Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band in New Jersey. That’s why fans from all over the globe descended on East Rutherford’s MetLife Stadium on Aug. 30, Sept. 1, and Sept. 3. Anticipation ran high because seven years ago they delivered some of the most memorable nights in history of the band at the same venue, culminating with a four-hour extravaganza that spotlighted Springsteen’s first three albums.
At that point in time, Springsteen was still grabbing signs from the audience and playing “Stump The Band.

As of late, Bruce Springsteen has received some criticism from fans for sticking to a rigid setlist during the E Street Band’s ongoing world tour. No one who attended The Boss’ hometown show in E. Rutherford, NJ on Sunday left complaining though; Springsteen deviated from the tour’s traditional setlist by subbing in seven fan favorites.
Over the course of 28-song performance, Springsteen and E Street Band treated fans to renditions of “Two Hearts,” Something in the Night,” “Spirit in the Night,” “Atlantic City,” “Jungleland,” “Detroit Medley,” and “Jersey Girl.”
All told, it made for easily the best setlist of the tour. The second half of the show was particularly epic, as the band finished the main set with “The Rising,” “Badlands,” and “Thunder Road,” and followed that up with a seven-song encore featuring “Jungleland,” “Born to Run,” “Rosalita (Come Out Tonight),” “Detroit Medley,” “Dancing in the Dark,” “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out,...

After nearly a year and a half of waiting, Max’s pirate rom-com “Our Flag Means Death” will return on Oct. 5.
The first teaser for this new installment picks up right where Season 1 left off. Though the newly-in-love Stede (Rhys Darby) and Blackbeard (Taika Waititi) planned to run away together, a hostile encounter kept Stede away from the man he loves. Stede’s holdup caused Blackbeard to believe he had been abandoned.
The teaser starts with Stede tossing a bottled message into the ocean as his voiceover reads, “Dear Ed, I love everything about you. I love being near you, breathing the same air.”
As Stede waxes poetic about his new love, Blackbeard angrily growls “F–k you, Stede Bonnet.” The rest of the teaser bounces between Stede reading his love letter and defending Blackbeard and his heartbroken lover generally causing havoc in any way he can.
Watch the full teaser in the video above.

Critical Zone, an Iranian drama shot in secret by dissident director Ali Ahmadzadeh, has won the Golden Leopard honor for best film at the 2023 Locarno Film Festival.
Ahmadzadeh, who has been banned from leaving Iran, was unable to attend the awards ceremony, held at the Swiss city Saturday night. The Iranian government pressured the director to pull the film from competition. Decades before internet dwellers decried Robert Pattinson earning the lead role in Matt Reeves' "The Batman," there was the original Batman casting controversy. When Michael Keaton was confirmed for 1989's "Batman," the backlash was significant enough that director Tim Burton had to fight to keep his star. But as with most casting debacles, it turned out to be for nothing. Not only had Keaton figured out Batman's real power lay within Bruce Wayne, the actor was in perfect alignment with Burton's vision for a shadowy, expressionistic reinvention of Batman for a new generation. Which, as it happens, lined up with what producer Michael E. Uslan had envisioned when he set "Batman" 1989 in motion.
The lawyer-turned-producer had acquired the rights to a Batman movie in the '70s, and was intent upon seeing his dream of a truly dark onscreen Dark Knight come to fruition. As Uslan put it, the goal...

Plot: A deep dive into all the great movies that came out in 1982.
Review: Everyone has their own take on the greatest year ever for cinema. Scholars tend to cite 1939, as that’s the year Gone With The Wind, The Wizard of Oz, Gunga Din, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, and several other seminal classics came out.
