A new year has arrived but Amazon Prime is looking to the past.
That’s not a bad thing mind you, as for its list of new releases in January 2021, Amazon is bringing back some classic movies and TV shows for its host of subscribers. We’ll get to the Amazon originals in a moment but for now, feast your eyes on January’s impressive library additions for the streamer.
Jan. 1 marks the arrival of all eight seasons of Dexter…roughly four and a half of which are great! Dexter will be receiving its own Michael C. Hall-approved revival later this year and thanks to Amazon you can catch up with the first run again. Speaking of show’s with disappointing conclusions, all nine seasons of How I Met Your Mother will come to Amazon on Jan. 19. A new year means a new start. But in its list of new year releases for January 2021, Hulu is sending a message of…eh, we’ll get the year started in February. Not to be overly rude to the usually sturdy streaming service, but there’s not much going on for Hulu in 2021’s first month.
Perhaps the biggest release of note is something that already enjoyed a successful release for ITV in the U.K. The Sister is the lates thriller from Neil Cross (Luther) and it makes its U.S. debut on Hulu on Jan. 22. 2020 comedies Save Yourselves and Like a Boss both arrive on Jan. 1. Hulu original film The Ultimate Playlist of Noise premieres on Jan. 15 and TV series Everyone is Doing Great arrives on Jan. 13.
Thankfully Hulu’s library titles are a bit livelier this month. Jan. 1 sees the arrival of Blade Runner: The Final Cut,...

Amazon has started to lay down the proverbial rose petals on which its high-profile pandemic-era theatrical refugee, Coming 2 America, will eventually walk; namely the first trailer for the 30+ years-awaited sequel to Eddie Murphy’s 1988 comedy classic.
The Paramount-produced film, once scheduled to hit theaters in August 2020, met a fate typical of the year 2020 this past October when the studio sold distribution rights to Amazon, which, after a recent delay, has scheduled the film to stream in March. Interestingly, the just-dropped trailer seems to indicate that the America to which Murphy’s Prince Akeem Joffer will once again come seems familiar—and by “familiar” we mean virtually unchanged from the first movie. Ironically, the intrinsically-2020 rollout of the film will contrast with an extremely-1988 aesthetic.
With that set, check out the Coming 2 America trailer just below.

Hulu is kicking off the new year in style next month, with January set to deliver a ton of fresh titles to the Disney-owned streaming service. There’s a bunch of original content landing throughout the first few weeks of 2021, but probably the highlight is the incredible number of classic movies that are going up on the site on New Year’s Day. Whether you’re in the mood for iconic comedies, dramas, animated efforts or sci-fi flicks, there’s something for you on the way.
There are well over 100 films being added to Hulu’s library on January 1st, so let’s just pick out a few notable titles. The full Austin Powers trilogy is among them, and if you can’t get enough of Mike Myers, the first Shrek likewise becomes available. For dramas, there’s Robert Downey Jr. biopic Chaplin, Johnny Depp vehicle Donnie Brasco and Jim Carrey’s The Truman Show.

When I first turned on “Ted Lasso,” I was looking for a show to have on in the background while cooking and figured it might be harmless enough to fit the bill. At the time, I didn’t know anyone else watching the Apple TV Plus comedy about a hapless Premier League coach (played by Jason Sudeikis), and the reviews were decidedly mixed. But as someone who became so obsessed with British football during quarantine that I now spend all my idle minutes tinkering with my fantasy league lineup (I’ll take any and all tips you’ve got), it seemed worth a shot. Cut to: ten episodes later, when I was crying real tears over what turned out to be a smart and remarkably sweet show about teamwork, friendship and redefined masculinity. Above all odds, “Ted Lasso” chipped away at my skepticism until there was none left — just like...

Looks like Afc Richmond gaffer Ted Lasso hasn’t been sacked just yet, lads.
Apple announced today that it has renewed Ted Lasso for season 2. The comedy stars Jason Sudeikis as the titular American football coach who decides to try out becoming the other kind of football coach by picking up a job with (fictional) English Premier League soccer club Afc Richmond.
Ted Lasso’s first season premiered on August 14 with three episodes debuting on Apple TV+. The remainder of the season’s 10 episodes are set to arrive every Friday, starting with episode four on August 21. Apple TV+’s description for the episode reads: “Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham) hosts the team’s annual charity benefit, where Ted stages a reconciliation between Roy (Brett Goldstein) and Jamie (Phil Dunster).”
Ted Lasso is based on two commercials that Sudeikis produced and starred in for NBC Sports’s coverage of the English Premier League.

Stop me if you’ve heard this one: A vengeful ex-wife inherits a professional sports team she hates and, determined to run it into the ground, pairs an inexperienced coach with a ho-hum squad so that, together, they’ll turn out their worst season ever.
Yes, this is the premise of the 1989 film “Major League,” a sports-comedy classic if not an outright classic sans modifier, and it’s also the basic premise of “Ted Lasso,” the new light comedy from Apple TV+ that’s… really, really good. While a few superficial tweaks mask just how much the latter owes to the former — “Ted Lasso” is about a soccer team, and the former owner didn’t die, he just got divorced — what makes Jason Sudeikis and Bill Lawrence’s series its own enchanting entry in the sports entertainment cannon is the same thing that makes Ted Lasso himself so darn compelling: attitude.

As the creator of Scrubs, Spin City, and Cougar Town, TV writer/producer Bill Lawrence is no stranger to “happy place” sitcoms. Yet Ted Lasso, his latest creation alongside Jason Sudeikis, sets a new bar for relentless optimism in TV comedy.
Ted Lasso is a fish-out-of-water story in which a fish decides he can do just fine on land too, thank you very much. Sudeikis stars as the titular American college football coach who takes on the challenge of managing a mid-tier English Premier League soccer team. The concept is based on a series of commercials that Sudeikis produced for NBC Sports to promote its Epl coverage. In the shorts, Ted Lasso is an overmatched football coach trying out his hand at a different kind of football where nobody uses their hands.

In an early episode of Ted Lasso, the new Apple TV+ comedy about a fictional Division II college football coach from Kansas (Jason Sudeikis) hired to lead a struggling English Premier League Team, an uptight journalist details Ted’s many flaws, but determines that he “can’t help but root for him.” It’s the perfect way to describe the new series developed by Sudeikis, Bill Lawrence (Scrubs), Joe Kelly, and Brendan Hunt; Ted Lasso may not be the comedy that will make Apple TV+ a must-have, but it’s a charming, easy watch that you’ll want to cheer for whether you’re a sports fan or not.
Much of this is a credit to Sudeikis. The Ted Lasso character was originally created for a series of NBC Sports commercials that aired in 2013-14 promoting the network’s coverage of the Premier League. In them, Sudeikis played the American...

“Ted Lasso,” Apple TV+’s latest original comedy, is
kind of like a hybrid of the baseball comedy “Major League” and those
folksy “aren’t Brits delightful” comedies of the late ‘90s like “Waking Ned
Devine” and “The Full Monty.” It gets most of its initial mileage
from the affable charm of its star, Jason Sudeikis, who finds a way to
turn the title character into someone who is genuinely likeable instead of
merely playing aw shucks heartland stereotypes.

The Santa Monica Observer has issued a story following the coroner’s verdict today on the cause of death of Los Angeles Angels pitcher Tyler Skaggs, a report that largely vindicated the newspaper’s speculation on his cause of death.
The newspaper was blasted by the Angels and Texas police after it published an earlier story that indicated Skaggs may have overdosed on opioids. The Texas coroner also came to that conclusion in his release today, saying that a combination of drugs and alcohol caused the 27-year-old pitcher to choke to death.
“Everything Stan Greene said in the days immediately following his death, turns out to have been true (sadly),” said an emailed statement from publisher David Ganezer. He added, “drugs are pervasive at Santa Monica high school and other affluent high schools in Los Angeles. As responsible journalists, we hope that Tyler Skaggs death will lead to a national...

With baseball season in full swing, it’s time to celebrate the 30th anniversary of “Field of Dreams.” The movie, written and directed by Phil Alden Robinson, was part of a run of late-’80s baseball films: “Bull Durham” and “Eight Men Out” opened in 1988, and “Major League” and “Field of Dreams” the next year. Universal had big hopes for “Field,” despite conventional wisdom.
On June 8, 1988, Variety’s Richard Gold declared that there was “a prevalent industry perception that baseball pics are commercial strikeouts,” and even if they perform well domestically, “America’s pastime is mystifying to foreigners.” Also, this was Kevin Costner’s second baseball movie in 12 months, after “Durham.” And it wasn’t a fun film: Variety’s April 19, 1989, review said the lead characters “are all haunted by regrets over failed relationships, life-shattering mistakes and missed opportunities.” Viewers could relate: The movie earned $84 million globally, giving Costner his second home run.

Okay, so here’s the thing. This month I wanted to find a good deep cut from the great Tom Atkins, whose charm and mustache thrilled us throughout the ’80s, even as he played a lecherous doctor, a kinda lecherous resident of a quaint seaside town, and a caustic cop haunted by his past (who I assume was also a lech). So when I dove into his filmography in search of a lesser-known vehicle, I perked up when I found the 1980 psychological drama The Ninth Configuration.
Alas, after watching the film, it turns out that Atkins has a relatively minor role, but there’s no way I could skip this movie, as it features a Murderers’ Row of horror character actor royalty. And so I figured, since baseball season did just start...*Puts on best Bob Uecker voice from Major League.*

Exclusive: Under CEO Vince Totino and President/COO Scott Hemming, Revolution Studios is five years into a strategy of building through derivative sequels, spinoffs and remakes, while continuing to focus on the distribution of its extensive existing library. At the same time, Revolution has turned away from risky theatrical investments to focus on the upside of proven IP in a vastly shifting marketplace. Totino and Hemming have been with Revolution for more than a decade, taking over the reins in 2014 after a major cash infusion from Fortress Investment Group. Three years later, the studio was acquired by Content Partners in a $400M deal. I recently sat down with the execs to discuss the evolution of Revolution.
Prior to the Fortress acquisition, the storied Revolution had become a financial disappointment after a promising start. When Joe Roth — a former studio exec at Disney and Fox — founded Revolution as a mini-major film...

The World Series is here again, and if it’s anything like the Cubs’ curse-breaking 2016 victory or the Astros and Dodgers’ seven-game barnburner in 2017, it might end up becoming the basis for a movie or documentary like the ones on our list. Whether it’s the thrill of victory or the agony of defeat, TheWrap recaps the biggest moments in these sports classics.
“The Pride of the Yankees” (1942)
This beautifully dramatized moment of sports history, as wonderfully monologued by Gary Cooper, helped to immortalize the already infamous “Luckiest man” speech by Lou Gehrig.
“Rocky” (1976)
In the ultimate underdog story, newcomer Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) gets a shot at the world heavyweight title against champ Apollo Creed. Rocky proves he has the goods, going the entire 15 rounds against Creed, but loses in a split decision. Rocky would get a rematch though and win the title in “Rocky II”.

Looks like Charlie Sheen is ready to throw Hollywood another curveball, and we mean that literally and figuratively: look out world, Wild Thing is back… again!
According to TMZ, the embattled actor is ready and willing to reprise his role as Ricky ‘Wild Thing’ Vaughn in another “Major League” sequel, pending a greenlit script.
If – and it's a big if when considering his very public battle with addiction, among other woes – another "Major League" comes to pass, it would mark the fourth entry in the series. But if Sheen had his way, that third film – "Back to the Minors" – wouldn't exist; in his words, the movie is an "abortion" and shouldn't be considered a part of the series.
A fourth "Major League" could certainly help Sheen on his road to recovery. Lately, the “Two and a Half Men” star has made headlines for his personal troubles, not for his work.

When adventurous treasure hunters Rick and Evelyn O'Connell return for their third film, this summer's "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor," one of them will look a bit different than they had previously. That's because Evelyn was once played by Rachel Weisz, who passed on this sequel and was replaced by Maria Bello. Likewise, the relationship between Bruce Wayne and Rachel Dawes from "Batman Begins" continues in this summer's "The Dark Knight," without Katie Holmes; Maggie Gyllenhaal fills in there.
It's a busy year for actors replacing other actors in sequels . we've already had a new Hulk (Edward Norton) and this fall, we'll have a new Punisher to match (Ray Stevenson) . so it's a good time to look back at some of the most notable substitutes. Sometimes new actors in old roles can make a huge impact; Antonio Banderas broke through with American audiences with "Desperado,...

NEW YORK -- Tom Berenger, Michael Biehn and Stana Katic have been tapped to star in the crime thriller Stiletto from producer-director Nick Vallelonga.
The feature, which recently began principal photography, stars Katic (NBC's Heroes) as an assassin whose seemingly random killings puzzle her lover, her clients and the detective following her rising body count. Berenger (Training Day) plays her boyfriend, whose rise in organized crime is offset by his love for her and his Mafia cohort (Biehn of Grindhouse).
Paul Sloan (The Scorpion King) plays the detective and makes his feature screenwriting debut with the film.
The ensemble cast also includes Dominique Swain, Kelly Hu, Diane Venora, William Forsythe, Amanda Brooks and Tom Sizemore.
Stiletto is produced by Vallelonga (A Modern Twain Story: The Prince and the Pauper) and co-produced by Warren Ostergard. The feature is being filmed with Panavision's state-of-the-art Genesis Super 35 Digital Cinematography Camera System.
Berenger's credits include his Oscar-nominated turn in Platoon, Major League and Born on the Fourth of July as well as the upcoming The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey. Biehn, who has appeared in The Terminator, Aliens, Tombstone and The Abyss, will star in the upcoming Kids in America for Universal Pictures.

Law. He also starred in Major League and was recently seen in the TV movies The Santa Trap and Atomic Twister. He is also writing a comedy titled 3 Day Test. Actor Charlie Sheen is up in arms over movie memorabilia he lent the PLANET HOLLYWOOD restaurant chain - because they won't give it back to him. According to Charlie's manager Janice McKenna, they have repeatedly asked for the memorabilia back but so far have not seen any of it. The movie props include Sheen's baseball uniform he wore in Major League (1989) and his Platoon (1986) helmet. McKenna says, "These items were specifically on loan and we've been trying to get them back for over a year. We're steamed."...

Actor Charlie Sheen is celebrating after his collection of baseball memorabilia raised thousands of dollars more than expected at auction - and caused frantic bidding among his celebrity pals. The Major League (1989) star, soon to take over from MICHAEL J. FOX on SPIN CITY, sold his impressive collection of baseball memorabilia at a telephone auction co-ordinated in New York Saturday. Sheen, who decided he no longer had any need for the collection - which includes the only existing uniform worn by baseball hero TED WILLIAMS during his record breaking 1941 season - was bowled over by seeing his possessions sell for up to three times their estimated value. MARTY APPEL at LELAND'S AUCTION HOUSE in New York says, "So far, it's been a really successful auction. The majority of the items went for much more than estimated. "We even had a lot of celebrities on the phone in bidding wars for some of the more interesting pieces. " The auction is the latest in a run of good news for Sheen who was given a clean slate last month when he was set free from his probation - for alcohol and drug offenses - 71 days early.

Actor Charlie Sheen is cleaning out his house and auctioning off his impressive baseball memorabilia collection. The Major League (1989) star and baseball fanatic, soon to take over from MICHAEL J. FOX on SPIN CITY, insists the sudden sale is not because he's stuck for cash - he just didn't think he needed the collection anymore. Among the exclusive items on offer are the only existing uniform worn by baseball hero TED WILLIAMS during his record breaking 1941 season and a ball autographed by seven of the eight players who conspired to throw the 1919 World Series. Sheen bought the ball in 1992 for $93, 000. The auction is to be held at Leland's auction house, New York, this Thursday and Friday.
