Talk to a police officer, anywhere in the world, and they’ll tell you the same thing: most criminals are stupid. That’s how they get caught. Generally speaking, smart people don’t go in for crime – they can think of less risky ways to get what they want. But what if they did? Directed by Seth Porges (of Class Action Park fame) and Stephen Robert Morse (who produced 2016’s Amanda Knox), How To Rob A Bank tells the true story of the man they called Hollywood, who fell on hard times, watched Point Break, and commenced a crime spree unlike anything seen before or since.
It happened in Seattle, though at times the events recounted here make it sound more like Gotham City. “When he walked into Lake City bank to rob us, he walked straight past his wanted poster,” one bank teller recalls. by then he’d abandoned the dead.

The 2000s was an interesting time for cinema. Let’s face it: it was an interesting time in general. In the realm of horror, the beginning of the aughts saw an influx of remakes of J-Horror – some bad, some pretty decent. However, with the post-9/11 cultural climate heightening anxieties and desensitization to violence due to real-world events, another genre emerged, tapping into the darker side of human nature. First coined by David Edelstein in a 2006 article in New York magazine, “torture porn” took the roots of exploitation and splatter films of the 70s and 80s and reintroduced the mainstream audiences to a new level of explicit brutality. Films like Saw, Hostel, The Devil’s Rejects, and the New Extremity of French Horror were raw and unapologetic looks at human depravity. It was everywhere. I mean, there was a time when you couldn’t go more than a year without having a Saw film.

Keanu Reeves has been entertaining audiences since the 90s with groundbreaking action films that have redefined the genre. Films like Point Break, The Matrix, and the John Wick franchises have become milestones in the genre. Additionally, Reeves is a fan of cinema in general and Star Wars has been a seminal franchise for the actor like many during the time of the original trilogy.
Keanu Reeves in Point Break | 20th Century Studios
Most Star Wars fans will agree that the first two films in the original trilogy were the peak of the franchise and Return of the Jedi fell short of reaching the heights of the previous two films. Reeves was also let down by the film as he had huge expectations from it but it didn’t deliver in the way that he hoped.

7 years ago, the whole world was amazed by the story about a group of robbers who were implementing a multi-day assault on the Royal Mint of Spain in Madrid. Later Money Heist became the most-watched non-English-language series on Netflix, proving that people’s interest in heist flicks and exploration of criminals’ minds is never-ending.
The platform’s new project goes further in this respect, as instead of depicting fictional robbers it will focus on a real-life bandit, even though his crimes were cinematic and spectacular enough to be developed by Netflix’s screenwriters.
Back in the 1990s, there was a drug dealer who was always striving for more than his business was making for him. After seeing Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves’ Point Break (1991), a crime film that followed the exploits of the bank robbers’ leader, he came up with an idea to make money any other way.

Nearly two dozen bank robberies. Millions of dollars in spoils. During the 1990s, a masterfully prolific bank robber began an unprecedented crime spree throughout the city of Seattle. As law enforcement officials tried — and repeatedly failed — to apprehend the man responsible, they came up with a nickname for the elusive man behind a series of facial prosthetics and extensive makeup: Hollywood.
How to Rob a Bank is a documentary chronicling Hollywood’s robberies and stranger-than-fiction life story. For starters, the nickname was more accurate than authorities could have possibly known: Scott Scurlock, the magnetic outdoorsman and premed student turned meth dealer behind the crimes had actually decided to pivot to bank robberies after seeing the movie Point Break. Many of the cinematic flourishes he employed while knocking over targets were borrowed from the big screen, but like so many other heist movies, the good times couldn’t last forever.

On “House of the Dragon,” HBO’s fantasy epic that takes place two centuries before “Game of Thrones,” Matt Smith plays Daemon, a warrior prince who exists among fire-breathing reptiles and palace intrigue. But if his character were ever to leap deeper into the supernatural, Smith has some ideas about where he could go. “I think Daemon would make a really good vampire,” he says. “I can imagine him wandering the earth alone for all eternity.”
He certainly has the coloring: Pallid and platinum-blonde, Daemon looks as if he could have arrived in the forbidding and dark world of Westeros all the way from Transylvania. But he might be too hotblooded to play the vampire. And “House of the Dragon” — a prequel to the Emmy-gobbling, earth-shattering hit “Game of Thrones,” set during the reign of the incestuous Targaryen dynasty — is unlikely to pivot into creature horror.

Over the last three decades, Keanu Reeves has cemented himself as one of the leading men in Hollywood when it comes to action. From making The Matrix with The Wachowskis to performing most of his stunts in Chad Stahelski’s John Wick films, Reeves has deservedly earned himself the status of one of the best action stars of our time.
But while it was Point Break and Sandra Bullock’s Speed that gave him the boost in the action landscape, these films weren’t Reeves’ first introduction to the genre.

What is it about Speed that always keeps people coming back for more? Now celebrating its third decade as one of the greatest action films ever made, Jan de Bont’s positively explosive bare bones rush hour movie is a rare case of an enduring Hollywood classic, with insanely bankable stars, that hasn’t been re-upped, remade or rebooted to death.
30 years on, it has spawned a wealth of imitators, a legion of die-hard fans (50Mph podcast we see you) and an entire legacy of super straightforward, super effective action cinema. But really only one legitimate sequel. So, what happened? How did such an influential movie falter? Why is an IP-hungry Hollywood, that’s somehow so starved it’s willing to bankroll a 9-figure stuntman movie based on an ancient and barely remembered ’80s TV show, so Speed-phobic? And most importantly of all, is the original still just as good as you remember it?...

Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves are among the most iconic pairings of all time. Having starred together in 1994’s Speed, the two have been a fan favorite casting, with many wanting to see more of them on-screen. Unfortunately, such a miracle is yet to happen, for after starring in The Lake House (which hardly featured them together), they have never managed to work together.

Despite stating countless times that they would love to reunite on-screen, a potential Speed 3 has never happened. And if it were to ever take place, it would be even more iconic since Bullock wasn’t even the first or second choice for the role of Annie.

If there’s anything worse than a millionaire who fails to contribute anything meaningful to the world, it’s taking the fall for one who’s murdered and finding yourself in the crosshairs of thugs and criminals. Jason Statham is back in business with Lionsgate to star in the upcoming action-thriller Mutiny with Plane and Blood Father director Jean-Francois Richet at the helm.
Lionsgate, MadRiver, and Punch Palace are teaming up to release the film in theaters. Lindsay Michel and J.P. Davis wrote the screenplay for Mutiny, with principal photography beginning in September in the UK. Statham produces through his newly-founded Punch Palace Productions, with Marc Butan via his MadRiver Pictures studio.
In Mutiny, after his billionaire industrialist boss is murdered in front of him, Cole Reed is set up to take the fall for the crime— leaving him on the run as he works to uncover an international conspiracy.

The ‘90s were a glorious time. That may be a bit of a generalization, but for the purposes of reflecting on the power of Hollywood at the time and its willingness to back mid-budget, practical action films, we’re choosing to cast a halcyon glow over the era. One of the standout films from this genre and time period is “Speed,” which celebrates its 30th anniversary next month. In honor of this milestone, Kris Tapley recently spoke with the film’s stars, Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock, for his “50 Mph” podcast dedicated to excavating “Speed” lore.
“I just remember a vehicle full of really kind and fun people,” said Bullock in reflecting on the making of the film. Commenting on its success — grossing 10 times its budget, winning two Oscars, and becoming regarded as one of the best action films of all time — Bullock added, “It was unexpected. After playing the role of James Dalton in the cult-classic film Road House, Patrick Swayze moved on to other career opportunities. Fresh off the action film and moving away from the image Dirty Dancing painted of him, the actor starred in a movie that would change his image in the film industry in the best of ways. The actor joined the cast of Point Break, the film that put Keanu Reeves on the map.

While there is no doubt that the movie turned into a classic, it seems that the filming was not as smooth as many would think. During a behind-the-scenes feature of the film, Swayze talked about what filming the action sequences was like for him. As the actor revealed, there were multiple occasions during filming where he almost died. All because of his dedication to his craft.

We recently ranked the movies of the late, great Patrick Swayze, and the film that came in at number 1 was Kathryn Bigelow's high-octane action pic "Point Break." It's hard to argue with that result: "Point Break" absolutely rules from beginning to end. In Bigelow's 1991 classic, Keanu Reeves plays an FBI agent who goes undercover as a surfer. Sounds silly, right? Well, stick with me. There's a gang of thrill-seeking surfers who moonlight as bank robbers, and Reeves figures he can get close to them by learning to surf. Okay, yes, it does sound silly. And yet, the movie absolutely rules and rips and rocks.
Patrick Swayze plays Bodhi, the very zen leader of the bank robbers who forms a bond with Reeves' character. There's a lot to love about the film, and Swayze's performance is at the top of the list. As it turns out, filming the stunt-heavy "Point Break...

While there are many reasons why movies lose their appeal over the years, in some cases they deserve much more recognition. As the awards season passes and the hype around the release dies down, some of the most acclaimed films end up being forgotten by younger audiences.
When it comes to war movies, pretty much everyone can name Band of Brothers, Dunkirk, and Saving Private Ryan, but that doesn't even cover a quarter of the list of perfectly great examples of the genre. The Hurt Locker is one of those films that has been unfairly forgotten in recent years, even though it is still very relevant.

It’s almost hard to imagine anyone else doing Bill Cutting in place of the legendary Daniel Day-Lewis in Gangs of New York, or Tim Robbins’ Andy Dufresne in The Shawshank Redemption but Hollywood veteran Tom Hanks came pretty close to playing several iconic characters including Cutting and Dufresne. The actor was also in negotiation to play one of Keanu Reeves’ roles.

Of course, it’s not John Wick, it would have been kind of weird seeing Hanks as John Wick, as for fans, Reeves was immersed in the character and he is now hard to replace. But Hanks almost booked the slot of the 1994 hit action thriller, Speed. But the role eventually went to the John Wick star.

Los Angeles’ iconic seaside diner Patrick’s Roadhouse at the edge of Pacific Palisades may have slung its last hash brown.
Amid a long-term lease negotiation, and after the financial battering of the pandemic, the half-century-old restaurant just off Pacific Coast Highway, known for its bright green exterior and kitsch décor, is attempting to raise $250,000 for back rent and building improvements as it holds discussions with potential new business partners about the possibility of a return.
While off the radar of industry cognoscenti in recent years, it had long been an unpretentious lure for A-listers like Johnny Carson, Sean Penn and Lucille Ball as well as execs including Jeffrey Katzenberg and onetime Paramount Pictures president Ned Tanen. Its most important Hollywood connection, though, may be its namesake: the seasoned character actor Patrick Fischler, son of the original owner Bill Fischler, who has since died.

Keanu Reeves established himself as a bankable commercial action star in the 90s with films such as Point Break and The Matrix. However, Reeves’ 1994 action-drama Speed was a blockbuster and catapulted the actor to new heights. As a result, it was a surprise that Reeves did not return for a sequel.

The Matrix franchise is one of the most beloved ones when it comes to the action film genre. Predominantly known for revolutionizing the action genre with well-choreographed action sequences and slow-motion effects, the franchise has a cult following with fans from across the world.
With its ensemble cast led by Keanu Reeves, the franchise has four movies so far. However, that is about to change soon if recent updates are anything to go by. While it is no secret that Reeves’ potential attachment to any project is enough for fans to get excited, this time around, that does not seem to be the case.

Neo, portrayed by Keanu Reeves in The Matrix, employs a range of martial arts techniques in all four films, even though his most famous quote is “I know kung fu”. The Wachowskis’ action film series were renowned for their brilliant martial arts action, which was unusual in American cinema at the time, in addition to their surreal storylines and thought-provoking ideas.
However, keen-eyed fans may have noticed that Neo prefers punching over kicking in his battles with the agents. Have you ever wondered why, though? Well, Reeves had back surgery shortly before filming on The Matrix began in order to treat a spinal injury that was paralyzing his legs.

As a result, the actor found kicking difficult, so he decided to focus on punching in Neo’s fight scenes.

The Matrix cast and crew revolutionized movies 25 years ago with a mesmerizing story and cutting-edge technology. Directed by the Wachowskis, The Matrix became a surprise hit in 1999 and launched a franchise that extended to movies, comics, and video games.
Keanu Reeves gave a career-defining performance as Neo, paving the way for his status as a bonafide action star and fan-favorite actor. His supporting cast in The Matrix included Carrie-Anne Moss, Laurence Fishburne, and Hugo Weaving. Together, they delivered a movie that influenced a generation of filmmaking and holds up 25 years later. The Matrix may have been a surprise then, but now it’s no wonder the cast remains active in movies and TV.

Patrick Swayze was one of a kind. He’s the only actor I can think of who was as comfortable cutting a rug on the dance floor as demolishing a room full of bad guys with his fists of fury. When he passed away in 2009, we lost an icon who was never really recognized as the legend he is in his time. In the years since many Patrick Swayze movies have become cult favourites, and with a Road House remake due out on Thursday, we decided now would be a good time to pick the five best Patrick Swayze movies.
Red Dawn:
John Millius’s cold war “what if” thriller goes down in the history books as the first-ever PG-13 movie. It was also Patrick Swayze’s first major leading role, with him best known up to this point for a supporting role in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Outsiders.

Before she solved murders at the Arconia alongside Steve Martin and Martin Short in Only Murders in the Building, Selena Gomez made magic happen for Disney as a part of Wizards of Waverly Place. The enchanting teen sitcom cast a spell on Mouseketeers for four seasons from 2007 to 2012, and now, toil and trouble are brewing again with a Wizards of Waverly Place sequel series under the working title Wizards.
Original stars Selena Gomez (Alex Russo) and David Henrie (Justin Russo) will take their wands out of storage to executive produce the revival project. At the same time, Gomez plans to appear in a guest role, with Henrie returning as a primary cast member for the Wizards of Waverly Place sequel series. Let me paint you a picture- It’s the early 90s in Los Angeles, California. You’re stopping by the bank on your way home from work and you’re really hoping to beat that Friday L.A rush hour. The Marvel Comics have a lot more than just a ton of superheroes, and each one of them is incredibly powerful with their own magnificent superpowers. While they all have their respective powers ranging from magic to super strength and a lot of others, some of them are also gifted with immortality. Like Hulk, for one. Or Wolverine. Or Thor.
The Marvel Comics Universe
But while these 3 are often regarded as some of the strongest deathless superheroes — with Point Break even considered to be the most powerful immortal after all the times he came out victorious despite facing the most brutal of villains — there is one other mutant who surpasses all of these characters’ undyingness: Mr. Immortal, aka Craig Hollis.
Craig Hollis’ Immortality Surpasses Every Other Character in the MCU
Created by John Byrne and renowned as Mister Immortal, Craig Hollis is one of the most powerful characters in the entire Marvel Comics universe.

You can’t teach someone to be an artist; as Steven Soderbergh once noted, if you could “we’d all be Stanley Kubrick.” Yet you can teach the craft necessary for artists to express themselves, and in the case of many of the books that follow, you can provide the inspiration necessary to unlock an artist’s best and most exciting ideas. Here are 13 must-read volumes for any aspiring director, books that examine the job from a variety of technical, artistic, and logistical angles. Some are more nuts-and-bolts manuals on how to use the camera, others — the ones written by working directors like Bethany Rooney, Mary Lou Belli, and Ken Kwapis — survival guides for anyone who wants to sustain a career in the industry. Taken together, they provide a comprehensive look at what it takes to direct and arm filmmakers with the tools they need to succeed.

Doug Liman got a standing ovation at the SXSW premiere of his remake of “Road House” — an event that he originally promised he’d boycott.
Festivalgoers chanted his name — “Doug! Doug! Doug!” — at the end of a post-screening Q&a after star Jake Gyllenhaal called out to the director, who was seated among the crowd.
Gyllenhaal first made Liman’s attendance known while introducing the film, saying, “I want to thank our incredible director. He’s in the audience tonight. He’s been a friend for over 15 years, I’ve wanted to work with him for that time, we’re so lucky. He’s so brilliant and this movie is too.”
Of course, Gyllenhaal also made a point to thank the company that Liman’s boycott was meant to target. Before mentioning Liman or his castmates, the actor said, “We have our Amazon folks here, who have been so fantastic,” mentioning...

Metrograph programmer Lydia Ogwang loves the balcony seats in the larger of the theater’s two screens. There’s something about having a visceral sense of the scale of the theater by being perched above the main floor. It’s easy to feel connected to the screening experience — even easier when you’re close enough to the booth that you can peek in and see the projectionist changing reels of the celluloid prints shown at the New York independent movie theater. But now, as part of Metrograph’s latest “Beach Bodied” series combining two great tastes that go great together — the beach and crime dramas — moviegoers now have the chance to see a brand-new 4K restoration of Kathryn Bigelow’s 1991 classic “Point Break” up on a big screen, no reel changes needed.

After a string of false starts and red herrings, Kathryn Bigelow’s Aurora will start shooting this year – her first film since Detroit.
Here’s a story that we return to every so often with a great deal of hope. Reports have emerged (this time via What’s On Netflix) that production is set to begin on Kathryn Bigelow’s next project, sometime ‘in early 2024.’
Bigelow is of course the director of acclaimed political dramas such as Zero Dark Thirty and Detroit. She was the first female director to win an Academy Award for 2010’s The Hurt Locker and she’s the filmmaker behind 1991’s Point Break.
Considering that list of accolades, it’s a shame we haven’t seen a film from Bigelow in the last seven years, although every once in a while a story surfaces to announce that cameras will soon be rolling on her next project.

Barbie remains the biggest Hollywood success story of the past year. A union between a beloved Mattel toy brand and the director of Little Women and Lady Bird, there’s a reason star and producer Margot Robbie pitched the combination as comparable to Steven Spielberg and dinosaurs. What you have here is a subject matter that generations of audiences grew up on and an auteur director bringing it to life in a fresh and exciting way. In 2019, Warner Bros. saw Robbie and Greta Gerwig’s vision, much to the studio’s reward four years later.
However, there was a time when such a pitch wouldn’t have been accepted, no matter who the director was. In fact, Sharon Stone revealed in a recent social media post that she could not even get studio executives to entertain the basic idea of a Barbie movie during the 1990s.

You do not hire Jason Statham to read love poems onscreen, or to weep gently at the sight of nuzzling puppies, or to gaze thoughtfully at a particularly breathtaking sunset. You hire the Derbyshire native to kick ass and take names, with the “names” part being optional. The "Fast & Furious" movies just haven't been the same since Paul Walker died. Oh sure, it's been entertaining watching the series relentlessly try to top itself (even sending its heroes to space for real) and later additions John Cena and Jason Momoa have helped inject some fresh energy into the Fast Saga's increasingly strained machinery. But Walker was always the heart and soul of these films. Without him, they just ring hollow.
Vin Diesel, whose offscreen conduct has overshadowed his contributions to these movies of late, needed Walker to play off of. The brotherhood that formed between their characters -- law-breaking street racer Dominic Toretto and undercover police officer Brian O'Conner -- in the original "The Fast and the Furious" extended to the actors' relationship in real life. As much as The Fast Saga has desperately tried to sell audiences on the "epic" romance between Dom and Letty Ortiz...

In a world where superheroes, sequels, horror (thankfully) and anything IP related are king, it seems as though the risqué original thriller has gone by the wayside. Over the past ten years or so you’d be hard pressed to find anything other than The Invisible Man, You Should Have Left, Gerald’s Game, Gone Girl, or Knock, Knock that really fit the mold (albeit with some finagling) and each of those is either tied to popular literature or skews closer to the horror genre.
But the original thriller thrived in the 1990s. Also thriving during this beautiful time in Hollywood were action movies featuring two adversaries face to face on the poster and/or movie cover. Movies like Face/Off, Point Break, Demolition Man, Universal Soldier, and Broken Arrow. 1992’s Unlawful Entry combines both of these elements with two heaping sides of the stalker and slasher horror subgenres. The passing of Patrick Swayze was enough to break your heart. Has there ever really been anyone quite like him? At his best, Swayze was the type of guy who was equally at home playing romantic leads as he was dropping bad guys in action fare. Swayze’s career peaked in 1987, the year he danced his way to the top of the box office in Dirty Dancing. It made him a giant star, with him not only having one of the top-grossing movies of the year but also a huge hit song in a track off the soundtrack album, “She’s Like the Wind”.
While traditional thinking would have led to Swayze acting in a whole slew of romantic movies, he had something a little different in mind. Swayze wanted to become an action hero. The fact is, he was a natural for the genre. His dance training and general...

Set in a single location, the piece explores the claustrophobic nature of young love strung with toxicity and lies, and the cyclical nature of violence.
Official Film Synopsis:In a remote cabin on the evening of a record-breaking blizzard, a young woman plots to poison her abusive husband in order to end their toxic relationship once and for all. When the poison fails to kill him, she not only has to quickly concoct a backup plan, but also contend with her husband’s increasing suspicion that his intensifying illness isn’t wholly accidental. When David Ayer’s Suicide Squad crash-landed in theaters, disparate reactions painted the ensemble superhero movie as a mixed bag. While some fans delighted in the anti-hero adventure’s humor, comic book-style action, and character chemistry, others dragged the project through mud, unleashing a seemingly endless nit-pick-palooza about minute details and bold takes on classic characters. The film begins with Johnny arriving at the F.B.I.’s Los Angeles branch for his first assignment. There, he’s greeted and immediately insulted by the director (John C. McGinley), whose strict rules for personal conduct and mirthless commitment to the job paint him as one of the dying relics of the service’s original, Hoover-led era. The other agents,...
