Just one day before Valentine’s Day in 2023, Kevin Costner shared a video of himself unboxing his Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Drama Series. While talking to the camera, the 68-year-old actor gushed over how his wife, Christine Baumgartner, went all out with “30 bucks” to decorate their Montecito, California home for an impromptu Golden Globes watch party after floods kept the couple from attending in person a month earlier.
Then, less than three months later, Christine dropped a bombshell when she filed for divorce on May 1 after 18 years of marriage. According to court documents, obtained by Et, Christine cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for the dissolution of the marriage, and she listed April 11 as the date of separation.
One day after Christine, 49, filed for divorce, a rep for the “Yellowstone” star intimated he was dragged into a divorce.

Kevin Costner's Filming Schedule Reportedly Led to Christine Baumgartner's "Surprise" Divorce Filing
Kevin Costner and wife Christine Baumgartner's divorce was an "unpleasant surprise" for the actor that allegedly came as a result of his busy filming schedule, according to a new report from People. Baumgartner filed for divorce last week, People initially reported.
Costner's representative said in a May 2 statement to the outlet, "It is with great sadness that circumstances beyond his control have transpired which have resulted in Mr. Costner having to participate in a dissolution of marriage action." The rep added, "We ask that his, Christine's, and their children's privacy be respected as they navigate this difficult time." Representatives for Costner did not respond to Popsugar's request for comment. TMZ was the first to report the news.
According to People's May 8 report, a source said, "Christine wants them to spend family time at their Santa Barbara home. During filming, Kevin is not around very much. His absence has been very hard for her.

When filming The Long Game, major golf enthusiast Dennis Quaid learned something about making a golf movie the the hard way.
“You don’t get to play that much golf at all,” Quaid tells Den of Geek during a visit to our 2023 SXSW studio.
Directed by Julio Quintana, The Long Game is based on the 2012 book Mustang Miracle by Humberto Garcia. Both the book and now the film recount the real life story of the 1955-1957 San Felipe High School Mustangs golf team in Del Rio, Texas, which made up exclusively of Mexican-American players – a first for the sport.
In a time where golf reserved for wealthy and connected white men, five young Mexican-American caddies broke major cultural barriers by assembling a team to compete against (and ultimately defeat) their white peers. Jay Hernandez (Magnum P.I.) stars as the team’s teach and coach Jb Peña and Quaid as...

To paraphrase Wesley Snipes circa 1992, "I only have [five] words for you: 'White Men Can't Jump' [remake]." That's right, you favorite comedic basketball hustlers, or a 2023 facsimile of them, are back in a Hulu original film that's coming your way this May. It's been over 30 years since Snipes issued his immortal declaration to Woody Harrelson about the slam-dunking abilities, or lack thereof, of white guys on the b-ball court, and now a new generation of actors and filmmakers is here to update the story for the streaming age.
We first heard about the "White Men Can't Jump" remake way back in early 2017, so it's been gestating for a while, with "black-ish" creator Kenya Barris attached to write. NBA player Blake Griffin and former NFL player Ryan Kalil are set to produce alongside Barris through their production company Mortal Media. The mid 1990s were a wild ride for fans of Kevin Costner. Lawrence Kasdan's 1994 film "Wyatt Earp," often seen as the longer, more turgid version of "Tombstone," was not entirely well-received and lost a boatload of money. A down! He followed it that same year with an intimate veteran drama called "The War," opposite a young Elijah Wood, who received a good deal of praise for his performance. An up! He then made, ahem, a splash with the overwrought and notoriously expensive "Waterworld" in the summer of 1995. "Waterworld," more or less a "Road Warrior" knock-off but at sea, was the most expensive film in history up the that point. It ended up breaking even. It was a blot on Costner's career. A down! Luckily, he chased "Waterworld" with the acclaimed golf romcom "Tin Cup" in 1996. An up!

Over the course of his long career, Cheech Marin has toked up with Tommy Chong in umpteenth Cheech & Chong movies, hung out on the driving range with Kevin Costner in “Tin Cup” and rode shotgun with Don Johnson on “Nash Bridges.” But he’s never taken on a role quite like the one he’ll be playing in “Lapham Rising.” The actor will be lending his distinctive voice to role of Hector, a born-again evangelical and unapologetic capitalist talking dog. In case you’re wondering about his breed, he’s a Westy.
Marin joins a distinguished cast, which includes such heavyweights as Frank Langella, Stockard Channing, Bobby Cannavale, Ashley Benson, Katie Parker, Stelio Savante and Jared Gilman
Marin completed his voice work for the role recently in Santa Barbara. With its story set in the Hamptons, the film completed live-action principal photography on location in Minnesota before the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown went into effect.

It’s a sport that inspires passion – people tend to passionately love it or passionately dislike it. Either way, golf is one of the oldest and most prestigious sports around, and it’s been the basis for a few decent movies over the years.
It’s such a tense, serious sport that it’s easy to poke fun at it. Whether you’re a golf nut or not, movies like “Caddyshack” and “Happy Gilmore” have provided timeless laughs, and classics like “Pat and Mike” and “Tin Cup” have provided a little romance to go along with the comedy. For the avid golf fans, biopics like “The Greatest Game Ever Played” or “Tommy’s Honour” provide interesting history behind the sport as well as a celebration of the lives of some of the greatest players ever.

Editor’s note: Often kept secret until retroactive reckonings occur like the ones going on now with Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Justice League, on-set bullying and drama that was once the calling card of some power players is something the powerless suffered in silence. Gary Foster, a second-generation film producer who followed his late father David Foster into the movie business, makes an argument that many of those abuses are eminently preventable. Foster, president/partner at Krasnoff Foster Productions, has been at it 40 years with credits that include Denial, Sleepless In Seattle, The Score, Ghost Rider, Tin Cup and Short Circuit. Here, he proposes a new multi-step program he believes will institutionalize reform, and he lays out a case that nicer can actually be more efficient, in addition to leading to fewer bruised feelings and future social media posts.

With Lovecraft Country still providing HBO and HBO Max with its horror content through October, the streamer is looking elsewhere for its spooky season offerings. HBO Max’s new releases for October 2020 feature some truly awesome horror library titles.
Jordan Peele’s Us, John Carpenter’s The Thing, and David Fincher’s Se7en all arrive on Oct. 1. That alone should be enough to last you through spooky season. And if it doesn’t, It: Chapter Two is right there as well. October is also a big month for Batman and Superman with Man of Steel arriving on Oct. 1 along with a whole of animated specials dropping that same day.
In relation to the library titles, this isn’t HBO Max’s strongest month from an original perspective. But there is still plenty to like here. The West Wing election special arrives on Oct. 15. That will be followed by David Byrne...

It’s slobs vs. snobs, divas vs. duffers, and Be Reel vs. the bygone bubble of American golf comedies. “Caddyshack” turns 40 this week, which gives us a great excuse to talk about this frozen-in-time genre: when class conflict could allegedly be solved with a 400-foot slapshot (“Happy Gilmore“) and any old folkloric failure could tear through the US Open (“Tin Cup“).

Kevin Costner in Tin Cup is available on Blu-ray From Warner Archive. Ordering information can be found Here
An unreachable shot to the green. A hopeless romance. Driving-range pro Roy McAvoy can’t resist an impossible challenge. Each is what he calls a defining moment. You define it. Or it defines you.
With lady-killer charm and a game that can make par with garden tools, Kevin Costner rejoins Bull Durham filmmaker Ron Shelton for another funny tale of the games people play. For Costner’s Roy, golf is a head — and heart — game. On both counts, that’s where shrink Molly Griswold (Rene Russo) comes in. She’s big-city, Roy’s small-time, and he believes only the grandest of gestures can lure her away from a slick touring pro (Don Johnson) and earn her love. So Roy and his dutiful caddy (Cheech Marin) set out to do the impossible: win the Us Open.

One of the best American comedies of the 1990s hits Blu-ray this week with Warner Archive’s release of Tin Cup, director Ron Shelton’s deliriously romantic and sharply observed meditation on the blurry line between self-sabotage and greatness. Kevin Costner, in the loosest and most engaging performance of his career, plays golfer Roy “Tin Cup” McAvoy, a driving range pro whose self-described inner demons have kept him from achieving his potential while old rival David Simms (Don Johnson) has risen to the top of the profession. There’s something to be said for golfing movies, I don’t know just what that is but there’s definitely something. Some folks happen to like Happy Gilmore since it didn’t destroy golf but it certainly gave people a new take on it, while others prefer movies like Tin Cup and The Legend of Bagger Vance. Caddyshack seems like a nice compromise since it does feature golf and hilarity, but getting more on subject is the idea of who would play greats like Rory McIlroy if such a movie ever did get made again. His record kind of speaks for itself since

Kevin Costner has returned to the western genre which has so often brought him success. It’s not feature films this time but with the new television series “Yellowstone,” currently bringing excellent ratings to the Paramount Network. Westerns have been good to Costner at the movies, with his most successful winning him two Oscars as producer and director of “Dances with Wolves” in 1990.
Costner almost had a career that ended before it really started. After very small roles in a number of big films such as Ron Howard’s “Night Shift” and the Jessica Lange vehicle “Frances” Costner then got what could have been a star-making role. However, his role as a suicide victim in flashback scenes for “The Big Chill” was cut by director Lawrence Kasdan. The same director wou would later make it up to Costner by casting him in a showy role in the film “Silverado.”

In a bit of pointed counterprogramming, Netflix released its latest original film “Amateur” — about a 14-year old basketball prodigy who gets recruited by a shady prep-school athletics program — in the middle of March Madness. The Ncaa has taken a lot of heat for its systemic exploitation of young college players, offering them academic scholarships but then forcing them to sideline their education in order to play ball full time, making the school millions in the process.
Based on his short film of the same name, Ryan Koo’s “Amateur” explores not only the corrupt business of athletic recruitment, but how those recruiters are targeting younger and younger players, forcing them to make difficult life-defining decisions before they’re even in high school — decisions that are often offered in bad faith. Given that the film is executive produced by current NBA superstar Tony Parker and former NBA All Star Michael Finley,...

Tin Cup is one of the better golf movies when it comes to learning how to get out of your own head and just play the game the way you know it best. Roy is the kind of guy that Costner always seems to play, the hardcase whose luck fluctuates with his mood and who doesn’t lie down for anyone, not even when his best friends are trying to give him the advice that he so sorely needs. It’s the kind of role however that he was born to play since he does it so well. In fact if you

A film that is not screened in advance for the press is not likely to be an undiscovered masterpiece. But it is not necessarily going to be as bad as such neglect suggests. Just Getting Started, the first feature written and directed by Ron Shelton in more than a decade, is sneaking into theaters without much attention. Shelton, the filmmaker behind such hits as Bull Durham, White Men Can’t Jump and Tin Cup, hasn’t matched those movies with his new comedy, but given his track record and the cast he’s assembled, headed by Oscar winners Morgan Freeman and Tommy Lee Jones,...

Welcome to this week’s “Preview Reel” column, where we look at the week’s upcoming wide-release movies. Coco dominated the Thanksgiving holiday and then again last weekend. There are no signs that it will slow down as there is only one major release scheduled for this week, the Morgan Freeman-led comedy Just Getting Started. Disney has been enjoying a good last couple of months as they released Thor: Ragnarok, Coco, and has Star Wars: The Last Jedi coming out next week. Until then, let’s see if Just Getting Started is worth your time.

What we are excited about: The cast is about the only thing we’re excited about with this movie. Morgan Freeman, Tommy Lee Jones, and Rene Russo together in a comedy sounds promising. Add in the director of Tin Cup (1996) and Bull Durham (1988), Ron Shelton, and you should at least get a solidly entertaining movie.

It’s a ringing endorsement for the Gen-x/Millennial generation that Rene Russo has faith in us. In the ‘90s, Russo was one of the women who paved the way for female icons with roles in Lethal Weapon 3, In the Line of Fire, Outbreak and Ransom. Fans like me grew up watching Rene Russo, Linda Hamilton, Geena Davis and Sarah Michelle Gellar do the same things Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Mel Gibson and other men did, so we don’t even question it today. Our conversation about Russo’s new movie went there. Russo reunites with her Tin Cup director Ron Shelton for...read more...

Okay. We’re hooked. Morgan Freeman. Tommy Lee Jones. Rene Russo. Oh, yes…there’s Ron Shelton, too. Though we haven’t seen much from director Shelton for a while, he is back, and his new action comedy already has a lot going for it. It’s scheduled to open on December 8th. Three Hollywood forces combine for success potential in Shelton’s newest romp, and we’re not only talking about the three main characters. First, there’s Shelton’s previous comedy successes. "I've got a big secret, wanna hear?" Broad Green Pictures has unveiled an official trailer for the new old-timers action comedy Just Getting Started, formerly titled Villa Capri until this official trailer arrived. From director Ron Shelton (of Bull Durham, White Men Can't Jump, Tin Cup) the film is about an ex-fbi agent and an ex-mob lawyer in the witness protection program who have to get over their petty old folks' home rivalry in order to save themselves from a mob hit. Morgan Freeman and Tommy Lee Jones star, with a cast including Glenne Headly, Rene Russo, Joe Pantoliano, Elizabeth Ashley, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Graham Beckel, and Mel Raido. This seems to be another one of those super cheesy "old people can still be funny" comedies we see all the time that really aren't that funny. This is definitely not for me. Disney has released a new trailer for Pixar's upcoming animated feature film Coco. Diversity is kind of a hot topic nowadays. As citizens of a melting pot of a culture, it’s nice to be represented in mainstream entertainment. And if we’re being honest, it’s not just about diversity, but authenticity. It always rings a bit false when you have a white person portraying a person of color. It’s especially easy to get away with this in animation, where you don’t even see the voice actors.
Studios have gotten away with this practice for years, but in today’s world, they’re making a conscious effort to create films that respect the culture it’s portraying, and part of that has to do with the voice cast. This newer approach is expanding to Coco, the latest film from Pixar inspired by Día de Muertos, a celebration of the dearly departed.

When I was younger I would go to double features at the movies all the time; sometimes, even a triple feature. It was good value for the money; two movies for the price of one. We also had what was called second run theaters. These were more the neighborhood, smallish theaters that would show films after they had been in the larger theaters. There were even venues that would show old movies and change the program daily. This was before tapes or CDs were out and often were the only way to see old movies on a big screen (as God and Cecil B. DeMille intended).
Often the films were chosen randomly but every once in a while you’d get someone booking the films who knew what they were doing. I first saw Casablanca in a double bill with Play It Again, Sam, written and starring but not directed by Woody Allen.

In a world where reboots, remakes, and sequels never stop rising, the creators of Black-Ish are the minds behind the most recent remake coming soon to a theater near you.
Franchise films are tailor made to continue on and on and on. Well after they are wanted or needed. When a story runs dry, scrap it and start form the beginning. That seemed to be Hollywood's motto for quite awhile. Recently it's not just franchises that get that treatment, but any film that had an audience is acceptable to be remade brought to a millennial audience. No classic is safe. Therefore this week we have been given the most recent to join the ranks of reboots, and that is White Men Can't Jump.
That's right, the 1992 sports classic staring our recent inductee Star Wars universe Woody Harrelson, and the one and only Wesley Snipes is coming back to the big screen in a new way.

The Wesley Snipes/Woody Harrelson basketball comedy White Men Can’t Jump is getting a remake next...

Ready?
Yep, the 1992 basketball comedy White Men Can’t Jump, starring Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson, is now in line for a big screen do-over. It’s in the hands of Kenya Barris, the creator of Black-ish, and 20th Century Fox is backing the project, as it did the original.
Ron Shelton, who was also behind classy sporting movies such as Bull Durham, Tin Cup and Cobb, wrote and directed the original film. He isn’t believed to be involved in the new version.
Instead, Kenya Barris will both produce the project and pen the new screenplay.

Rene Russo ("Thor," "Nightcrawler") is in negotiations to join Morgan Freeman and Tommy Lee Jones in Ron Shelton's action comedy "Villa Capri" for Broad Green Pictures.
The "Midnight Run"-esque story follows an ex-fbi agent (Jones) and an attorney who is in the witness protection program (Freeman) who have to put aside their petty differences to fend off a mob hit.
