Beach House put together a pretty stellar setlist for their stripped-down show at Johnny Brenda’s in Philadelphia Monday night (December 11th), including some live debuts and a few rarities they haven’t performed in over a decade.
After a surprise opening set from Philly’s own Kurt Vile, Beach House’s Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally did an intimate gig full of songs for the real heads. They performed “Many Nights” and “The Bells” — both from 2022’s Once Twice Melody: Chapter 3 — live for the very first time, and debuted “Devil’s Pool” from last April’s Become EP.
But the real surprises were the throwback rarities, including “Childhood” from their self-titled debut, which they hadn’t played in a whopping 16 years. They also did “Auburn and Ivory,” another Beach House deep cut, for the first time since 2012. And, for the first time since 2016, they performed Devotion’s “D.A.R.L.I.N.G.” and...

Sofia Coppola, whose awards contender “Priscilla” is now in theaters, is just one of several filmmakers whose parents were already major names in the industry. Both her father, Francis Ford Coppola, and her mother, Eleanor Coppola, are directors, as is her brother Roman.
Here are some of the most notable second-generation directors in Hollywood, including Jason Reitman, Rob Reiner, Mario Van Peebles and Colin Hanks.
We’re also a big fan of Francesca Scorsese’s TikTok videos with her dad, Martin Scorsese, especially the one where he auditions the family dog.

Burt Young, a former boxer who was in Sylvester Stallone’s corner as his brother-in-law Paulie in the six Rocky films and received a supporting actor Oscar nomination for his turn in the original, has died. He was 83.
He died on Oct. 8 in Los Angeles, his daughter, Anne Morea Steingieser, told The New York Times Wednesday.
A tough guy in real life who usually played tough guys onscreen, Young portrayed a rotten client of gumshoe Jack Nicholson’s in Chinatown (1974), was mobster “Bed Bug” Eddie in The Pope of Greenwich Village (1984) and played Rodney Dangerfield’s protector/chauffeur Lou in Back to School (1986).
Young also appeared in four movies in four straight years with fellow Queens guy James Caan — Cinderella Liberty (1973), The Gambler (1974), The Killer Elite (1975) and Harry and Walter Go to New York (1976) — before they worked together again in Mickey Blue Eyes (1999).

Q’orianka Kilcher will star in and produce “Yesteryear” alongside a cast that includes Scott Haze, Wes Studi and Nick Cassavetes. “Yesteryear” is written and directed by Adam VillaSeñor (“In Full Bloom”) and definitely seems to connect thematically with some of the challenges facing America and the world.
The film follows Alma Deswood (Kilcher), a struggling, young Native actress who psychologically unravels in quarantine amidst the Covid-19 pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement. As Alma’s mind is deconstructed, she is forced to navigate complex relationships, hallucinatory nightmares and painful memories taking her on a journey of introspection that twists the fabric of reality.
Haze plays Alma’s musician ex-boyfriend, Studi portrays Alma’s quirky father and Cassavetes appears as an apartment building manager where Alma resides.
The film is produced by VillaSeñor and Kilcher. Reza Ghassemi and Jacob Stein serve as executive producers. Christopher Pollock co-produces alongside co-executive producers Grant Roberts and Justin Rubin.

Sean Penn defiantly swims against the Hollywood current with “Flag Day,” a labor of love that harkens back to another era of moviemaking. Jennifer Vogel’s memoir “Flim-Flam Man: A True Family History,” published in 2004, resisted film financing over 18 years, said producer William Horberg (“The Queen’s Gambit”) at the Cannes afterparty at the Martinez. Back at the start, producer Michael De Luca loved the project, and after many detours and obstacles, when the MGM studio head saw the nearly finished film, enthusiastically acquired it for release in 2021 (just as the studio was acquired by Amazon). Horberg was joyful at the film’s good fortune.
Like many other well-reviewed films at Cannes, a robust theatrical future is by no means assured for this old-fashioned ’70s-’80s father-daughter story, which marks Penn’s first time acting in his own film, after helming six features. Thanks to Matt Damon, Penn said at Sunday’s press conference,...

The Oscars were built to highlight the cinematic year’s most audacious and outstanding achievements. Past snubs have left many of the industry’s finest filmmakers, actors and technical artists waiting for their first Dolby Theatre invitation. This year, multiple contenders are angling for an inaugural mention, even though it should be one of many. So who are they?
It’s always gratifying to see a veteran actor — in this case, Delroy Lindo — finally receiving the acclaim he’s deserved for his nearly 40-year career. Lindo’s role in Vietnam War drama “Da 5 Bloods,” which reunited him with director Spike Lee after 1995’s “Clockers,” could bring him his first nomination for best actor. But where were the voters in 1995 or in 1992 for “Malcolm X”?

The last-minute releases of a calendar year have traditionally been looked upon as possible “late-breaking” entries or “shake-ups” to an awards season. Best picture winners such as James Cameron’s “Titanic,” Peter Jackson’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring” and Clint Eastwood’s “Million Dollar Baby,” which opened in theaters in mid- to late December, are perennially cited as prime examples.
More recently, many others have attempted to mount such a feat only to come up empty-handed. In 2017, “The Shape of Water” from Guillermo del Toro was the first December release to win in 13 years. Even so, the fantasy drama started its journey at the Venice and Telluride film festivals in September.
This year, the Oscars don’t have a conventional “December” in play, since the eligibility period is extended through February for the April 2021 ceremony. Here’s a look at movies scheduled to open...

James Gandolfini was best known for his work on the HBO series "The Sopranos," but the New Jersey-born star also enjoyed a fruitful film career.
Gandolfini died on Wednesday in Italy at the age of 51. His death, first reported by Deadline.com, was the result of a fatal heart attack.
Gandolfini's first credited role was as an orderly in the 1987 film "Shock! Shock! Shock!" He received major notices, however, for a small but memorable scene in the 1993 Tony Scott movie "True Romance." (Warning: Link Nsfw.)
Gandolfini reunited with Scott for "Crimson Tide" in 1995; that year also found him starring in "Get Shorty" as Bear, a gruff and physical bodyguard with a heart of gold. Other supporting parts in "A Civil Action," "8Mm," "She's So Lovely," "The Juror" and "Night Falls On Manhattan" soon followed.
After winning the role of Tony Soprano on "The Sopranos" in 1999, Gandolfini took a break from films.

Some actors are best known for an iconic TV character they've played. But most of them have had at least one other notable role to be remembered by. Jackie Gleason isn't just Ralph Kramden, he's also Minnesota Flats and Buford T. Justice. Henry Winkler isn't just The Fonz, he's also Barry Zuckerkorn. (And, to acknowledge one who recently left us, Larry Hagman's legacy isn't just J.R. Ewing, its also Major Nelson.) But so far, no matter how many other gigs he's had before, during and since, James Gandolfini is pretty much just Tony Soprano. This isn't to say Gandolfini isn't a great actor. He's delivered many terrific performances in many films. But he isn't known for playing any other stand-out characters. Right now, Gandolfini occupies an interesting middle ground: He's not exactly a movie star, and he's not exactly a character actor. With his girth and his bald...

Nick Cassavetes has made a lot of attempts at being a jack of all trades, starting out in a career as an actor before moving on to directing films as varied as the 1997 relationship drama She's So Lovely and the 2007 crime film Alpha Dog. But by far his biggest success, and one he's never been able to match, was 2004's The Notebook-- yes, Nicholas Sparks probably gets the lion's share of the credit for writing the book it was based on, but Cassavetes put his name on it, and you'd think that success would lead to a whole lot of others in the same vein. But Cassavetes, for better or for worse, seems dead set on expanding into other genres, and he's getting ready to do it again with Kristen Stewart to accompany him. Variety reports he's signed on to direct Cali, a drama that Stewart became attached to...

This wild ride officially has a driver.
Nick Cassavetes is set to return to gritty territory as the "Alpha Dog" director signs on to call the shots for the indie thriller, "Cali," according to Variety.
"Cali" tells the Tarantino-esque tale of Mya (Kristen Stewart) and Chris, two lovebirds with a knack for bad choices and dangerous behavior. After selling a snuff film starring Mya, they skip town with a bundle of cash before anyone realizes the flick's a fake. Years later, Mya's quest to save the younger sister she left behind requires a return to the San Fernando Valley, where she and Chris must face a whole slew of freaks and psychos.
Nick Cassavetes' most successful film to date might be "The Notebook," but the son of John Cassavetes is no stranger to the rugged indie Diy style pioneered by his father — and the style that it sounds might be appropriate for "Cali.

I love that a heated discussion over Titanic’s infamous Oscar sweep of 1998 has already begun over at Laurent’s excellent retrospective. I guess it’s just the nature of this particular film. There is something about Titanic that hits a raw nerve in people and they feel a need to defend/criticize it so passionately.
As it happens, I fall in the ‘unconditional love’ category and I’m not afraid to admit it. To this day I have a passion for Titanic, a film that so perfectly matches what a glorious, spellbinding, big spectacle romance against an historic backdrop should be, and those films are so rare, especially when they are made with such precise and meticulous detail from James Cameron.
We shouldn’t be embarrassed over how much we loved Titanic in the 90′s. We should embrace it. So as our third ‘Choose The Winners’ article, we are...

The Cassavetes name is synonymous with taking one for the team, and then taking on a project for one's own self. Over the past decade and a half, Nick Cassavetes has been taking plenty for the team with admirable directing gigs such as The Notebook, Alpha Dog and numerous acting jobs but nothing has come close to a personal vision since the quirky, 1997 addiction drama She's So Lovely, which arguably remains his best work to date. Yellow, a project noted back in January, appears to be Cassavetes' renewal with the indie form. Filming begins in L.A. next month, and sweet Oklahoma in mid-October. Joe Q. Bretz is producing. Co-written by Cassavetes's actress wife Heather Wahlquist (she has starred in all of his films since John Q) and Cassavetes himself, this is about "a young woman whose drug habit isn’t the worst of her problems." Remember how a star is set to be re-born? A few months after hearing that the oft-used music story A Star is Born would get another retelling courtesy of Warner Bros., Deadline Hollywood Daily reports that Nick Cassavetes is in early talks to direct it, after reading a draft by Will Fetters. As Dhd points out, this comes after the director sued New Line -- sister studio to WB -- for being taken off the project Elephant Orphanage. Change of heart? An apology? Bygones be bygones?
The filmmaker has had a pretty interesting career so far, dancing back and forth between grit and romance. He started with the romances Unhook the Stars in 1996 and She's So Lovely in 1997, before penning Blow, directing John Q and The Notebook, writing and directing Alpha Dog, and last giving us My Sister's Keeper. He's currently working on a drug-centric dramatic indie called Yellow, and should these talks work out,...

When Robin Wright broke onto the scene in 1987 as the luminous, romantic Buttercup in "The Princess Bride," some in the industry thought she was going to be a huge star. Seven years later, she earned cred with Golden Globe and SAG Award nominations for her role as Jenny Curran in "Forrest Gump." Scripts flooded in. Superstardom awaited her. But Wright balked, made motherhood a priority, and chose her roles carefully."I still don't want [superstardom], because what comes with it sucks, Wright says flatly. [People in the industry] want to take you into superstardom or celebrityism and all that, which I understand because it's commerce and it's a business. That's not why I'm in the business, though. It's irrelevant. I kind of went down the independent road for longer than they would've liked, I guess. Whatever, I'm happy with my career. She is not, however, happy with all of her performances. Not ever completely happy,...

During an exclusive chat with MTV News, Reaser was eager to talk about ripping apart mountain lions, asking for Robert Pattinson's autograph, and why she thinks one of her co-stars should have played Esme instead.
MTV: What is the biggest difference, in your opinion, between the three "Twilight" books that are currently being filmed as the "Saga"?
Elizabeth Reaser: Oh,...

PARIS -- Sean Penn will head the jury at the 61st annual Festival de Cannes, set to take place from May 14-25, organizers announced Thursday.
Penn will venture Into the Wild of the French Riviera town after accepting the invitation from the fest's Gilles Jacob and Thierry Fremaux. Penn's own Into the Wild hits Gallic theaters Wednesday.
"In the last few years, it seems there has been a rejuvenation of cinema building worldwide; increasingly thoughtful, provocative, moving, and imaginative films by talented filmmakers: that a new generation of filmmaking may have begun. The Cannes Film Festival has long been the epicenter in the discovery of those new waves of filmmakers from all over the world. I very much look forward to participating in this year's festival as president of the jury," Penn said upon accepting his duty.
The actor-director is no stranger to the Croisette, having previously won the best male performance prize at the 1997 festival for Nick Cassavetes' She's So Lovely.
The actor presented his first film as writer, director and producer, The Indian Runner at the 1991 Festival de Cannes and has come to town to present The Pledge and Clint Eastwood's Mystic River.

Sean Penn and Robin Wright are divorcing after 11 years of marriage. According to People.com, the divorce was confirmed by the couple's spokesperson Mara Buxbaum. The Mystic River star married Wright in 1996 and they have two children together: Dylan Frances, 16, and Hopper Jack, 14. Penn began dating Wright in the early 1990s and starred onscreen together in the 1997 movie She's So Lovely and Hurlyburly the following year. It is the second divorce for Penn - he ended his marriage to pop star Madonna in 1989 after four years together.
