Amazon has found its criminal.
Charlie Hunnam has been tapped to star in Amazon’s adaptation of Ed Brubaker’s comic series Criminal.
Picked up to series in January after nearly a year in development, Criminal is described as an interlocking universe of crime stories based on the multiple Eisner Award-winning graphic novel series created by Brubaker (Westworld, Batman: Caped Crusader) and Sean Phillips.
Hunnam will play Leo, aka Coward, a brilliant master thief who sees all the angles, and specializes in plans with no guns and no violence. Like a chess player, Leo thinks three moves ahead. Other crooks think he’s a coward, especially compared to his father Tommy, who went to jail for murdering the most feared man in the city, Teeg Lawless.
Hunnam joins a cast that also includes Richard Jenkins, Adria Arjona and Kadeem Hardison.
Brubaker will serve as co-showrunner on Criminal alongside crime fiction author Jordan Harper (Gotham,...

Netflix has greenlit the limited series “Black Rabbit” starring Jason Bateman and Jude Law.
The series was originally announced as being in development at the streamer back in October 2022. With the greenlight announcement, it is also confirmed that Cleopatra Coleman (“Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire”), Amaka Okafor, Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù, and Dagmara Dominczyk will all star in the series alongside Bateman and Law.
The official logline for the series states, “When the owner of a New York City hotspot (Bateman) allows his turbulent brother (Law) back in his life, he opens the door to escalating dangers that threaten to bring down everything he’s built.”
Zach Baylin and Kate Susman created the series and serve as executive producers. Bateman will direct the first two episodes and executive produce along with Michael Costigan under their Aggregate Films banner. Law and Ben Jackson will executive produce via Riff Raff Entertainment.

The songs in the running for the 2024 Best Original Song Oscar are “It Never Went Away” (“American Symphony”), “I’m Just Ken” (“Barbie”), “What Was I Made For?” (“Barbie”), “The Fire Inside” (“Flamin’ Hot”), and “Wahzhazhe (A Song for My People)” (“Killers of the Flower Moon”). Our current odds show that “What Was I Made For?” (31/10)) is favored to win, followed in order by “I’m Just Ken” (37/10), “It Never Went Away” (9/2), “The Fire Inside” (9/2), and “Wahzhazhe” (9/2).

It’s been two decades since an epic fantasy film made history at the Oscars, winning every category in which it was nominated, and three women set new records. There weren’t many surprises at the 76th Academy Awards, but there were some memorable moments. Billy Crystal hosted for his eighth time on February 29, 2004. Read on for Gold Derby’s Oscars flashback 20 years ago to 2004.
It was finally Peter Jackson‘s time as the third installment of his “Lord of the Rings” trilogy earned him a trio of awards. Despite numerous nominations, the first two films failed to make big showings; however, “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” not only claimed Best Picture, but won all 11 categories in which it was nominated. It tied with “Ben-Hur” (1960) and “Titanic” (1998) for most wins in one ceremony, and holds the record for biggest sweep. It was the 10th film...

Two decades ago at this time, the Oscar race for Best Actor was shaping up to be a rather competitive one. We had no idea what we were in for. Allow me to backtrack just a bit.
Three-time previous nominee Sean Penn had taken an early lead for his role as a troubled ex-convict and grieving father in Clint Eastwood’s crime drama “Mystic River.” Then Bill Murray began to generate major buzz for his portrayal of an aging movie star in Sofia Coppola’s acclaimed Tokyo-set comedy “Lost in Translation.”
The Golden Globes did little to clarify things. Penn prevailed in the drama category while Murray picked up the comedy/musical award. The latter did arguably get a bit of a boost with his charming acceptance speech.
All eyes were then on the Screen Actors Guild Award, which many thought would serve as a tie-breaker. But in the ultimate awards twist,...

This year marks the 20th anniversary of The Return of the King, the final part of the Academy Award-winning The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Adapted from celebrated author J.R.R. Tolkien’s high fantasy novels of the same name, these films more than just introduced the iconic realm of Middle-earth to millions of fans around the world; they became legends in their own right. So much so, The Lord of the Rings has become a holiday staple celebrated by millions around the globe.
Indeed, despite being set in a world without the usual Yuletide trappings, this trilogy has quietly become something of a Christmas tradition, and an annual viewing appointment every December. Here’s how the films’ surprise connection with the holiday season began, why they’re so perfectly suited for the festive start of winter, and how The Hobbit trilogy only strengthened the association a decade later.

Taryn Manning’s audition for the Britney Spears starrer Crossroads was so good it made director Tamra Davis nervous.
“She was picking something on her arm, and it looked like it might start bleeding,” recalls Davis of a casting session for the 2002 road trip drama, written by soon-to-be TV mogul Shonda Rhimes. “I thought ‘Oh my, she’s too much, this girl.’ But at the same time, she was the girl.”
Manning was vying for the role of Mimi, a trailer park teen with dreams of moving to Los Angeles to make it as a singer. Manning so nailed the mannerisms and soul of a girl from the wrong side of the tracks who longed for stardom that Davis also felt confused. “I remember quietly telling [casting directors Kim Davis-Wagner and Justine Arteta] that while she was amazing, I needed a real actress. Helen Hayes won Best Actress in 1932 for “The Sin of Madelon Claudet.” She won Best Supporting Actress in 1971 for “Airport.” Hayes, who was the first performer to pull off this double feature, had the longest time between wins.
Jack Lemmon won for his supporting turn in “Mister Roberts” in 1956 before he took home Best Actor in 1974 for “Save the Tiger.”
Ingrid Bergman won Best Actress in 1945 for “Gaslight” and again in 1957 for “Anastasia” before she took home a supporting award in 1975 for “Murder on the Orient Express.”

Emma Thompson has turned in a host of eclectic, effective, excellent performances throughout her illustrious career. She started out with period dramas such as “Howards End” and “The Remains of the Day” before later moving into fantasy with roles in “Nanny McPhee” and “Harry Potter.” Add to that top-tier performances in the likes of “Sense and Sensibility,” “Saving Mr. Banks,” “Cruella,” and “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande,” and you’ve got one hell of a performer.
However, Thompson has stated herself that the role she gets the most praise for is actually… “Love Actually.” The classic Richard Curtis Christmas movie, which turns 20 this year, tells the interconnected love stories of eight different sets of people with Thompson delivering the most emotional and heartbreaking storyline of all of them. Thompson’s Karen is an under-appreciated stay-at-home mother who spends her days looking after the kids, making costumes for their school nativity,...

Lily Gladstone turns in a powerful performance as Mollie Burkhart, an Osage woman whose family is part of the horrifying murders of tribespeople to gain their money and profit rights after oil is discovered on their land. The Osage Nation became wealthy, and white men used a number of underhanded and despicable ways to get their hands on the money. That includes the plotting of a series of murders by William King Hale (Robert De Niro) and his nephew Ernest Burkhart (Leonardo DiCaprio).
Based on the true story of the Osage murders in Oklahoma at the beginning of the 20th century, the cast includes Jesse Plemons, Tantoo Cardinal, John Lithgow, Brendan Fraser, Cara Jade Myers,...

“The next big step is to play opposite Brad Pitt,” she tells Variety. “It’s time for her to be the love interest of these stars. It’s where she belongs.”
The two actors are both on the awards circuit for the critically acclaimed drama which had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival last year, resulting in Lysette receiving an 11-minute standing ovation. The “Transparent” actor was the first openly transgender performer to headline a film in competition at the oldest running festival in the world. Cillian Murphy has had quite the career since he first appeared in the 1997 short film Quando. He would rise to prominence in the 2000’s by appearing in Danny Boyle’s post apocalyptic zombie tale 28 Days Later before finding even more success being one of Christopher Nolan’s go to guys in films such as Batman Begins and Inception. It would be that collaboration that would give Murphy his biggest leading roles yet in the massively successful Oppenheimer, a film that will hopefully see Murphy’s name on the short list for Best Actor during this years Awards season. So with quite the Pre-Oppenheimer resume, we wanted to know what film starring the Irish born actor has been your favorite. As always, if you don’t see your favorite listed, click other and let us know in the comments. We kept films like Tron: Legacy, Dark Knight and Dark Knight...

Character actor Richard Brake has a lot of success in his career, racking up almost 90 screen credits over the last thirty years. Those credits include roles in Cold Mountain, Batman Begins, Doom, Munich, and Hannibal Rising, so he started getting cast in major productions with some frequency rather early on. But it’s interesting to see how much more prolific he has gotten since playing The Night King in Game of Thrones and Doom-Head in Rob Zombie’s 31. About half of his credits have come just in the seven years since 31 was released. Next up for him is The Gates, where he co-stars with John Rhys-Davies of the Indiana Jones and Lord of the Rings franchises (in addition to over 250 other projects). The film is scheduled to receive a digital and VOD release in the US and Canada on June 27th, and a trailer for it can be seen in the embed above.

For most actors, winning an Oscar is seen as the absolute pinnacle of a Hollywood career. For a select group of performers, though, one simply isn’t enough.
There have been 44 different actors to have won multiple awards, the first coming in 1937 when Luise Rainer became the original two-time Oscar darling.
Some manage to win every time they are nominated. Others, such as the inimitable Meryl Streep, have careers peppered with nominations, winning only when the so-called narrative dictates.
In 2021, Anthony Hopkins took home his second statuette, for his role in The Father. The year before, Renée Zellweger took home her second Oscar after playing Judy Garland in Judy.
In 2020, Mahershala Ali picked up his second Best Supporting Actor Oscar for Best Picture winner Green Book. He previously won for Moonlight in 2017.
Here are the actors with the most Oscar wins.

Any belief that the Oscars award the right films, directors and performances has faded over the years.
While every ceremony has a smattering of correct decisions – trophies handed to the right people for the right films – more often than not, the pervading feeling is one of pessimism caused by a deluge of undeserving recipients.
The Oscars are a far cry from what they claim to be – a celebration of the previous year’s cinematic offerings. But his does not stop people from trawling the internet the following morning in the hope that maybe, just maybe, the winners list impresses rather than disappoints.
With the 2023 ceremony taking place in March, we have highlighted 17 films that really should not have been awarded Oscars.

Almost every year there’s at least one actor who sweeps through all the major precursors prior to the Oscars. But this year none of the four acting categories will have had a sweeper through the entire season. The last time a scenario like this played out was actually way back in 2002.
SEECan Andrea Riseborough (‘To Leslie’) pull a last-minute Best Actress Oscar upset?
That year Daniel Day-Lewis (“Gangs of New York”) and Jack Nicholson (“About Schmidt”) tied for Best Actor at Critics Choice. Nicholson went on to win the Golden Globe for Best Film Drama Actor while Best Film Comedy/Musical Actor went to Richard Gere (“Chicago”), who didn’t go on to receive an Oscar nom. Day-Lewis went on to win SAG and BAFTA. Yet the Oscar ended up going to Adrien Brody for “The Pianist.”

Look at any list of 2022’s best movies and you’ll see The Banshees of Inisherin near the top. Martin McDonagh’s latest film uses the fallout between the best friends Pádraic (Colin Farrell) and Colm (Brendan Gleeson) to examine masculinity, the cost of ambition, and the best way to live a life. The film’s deftness with these topics (and its ability to do so in a way that is often funny) and the environment that surrounds these characters are excellent, but McDonagh’s writing was not always so clear. At a recent awards show, he recalled one of Inisherin’s stars giving him a less-than-stellar review of the original script.

The BAFTA Awards just gave its acting prizes to Cate Blanchett (“TÁR“), Austin Butler (“Elvis”) and “The Banshees of Inisherin” duo Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan, but we may have a different set of winners at Sunday’s Screen Actors Guild Awards. In fact, completely different if our odds prove to be correct. At the moment, Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”), Brendan Fraser (“The Whale”), Angela Bassett (“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”) and Ke Huy Quan (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) are the projected champs, which would mean no overlap with the Brits. But how many times have SAG and BAFTA gone 0 for 4?
Since BAFTA became an Oscar precursor 22 years ago, the answer to that is zero. Even with various snubs, ineligible films and category messiness — Jennifer Connelly (2001’s “A Beautiful Mind”) losing in lead at SAG and winning in supporting at BAFTA; Alicia Vikander (2015’s “The Danish Girl...

Hot off her 2022 Best Film Actress SAG Award victory for “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” Jessica Chastain is now in the running for the organization’s Best TV Movie/Miniseries Actress prize as the star of Showtime’s “George and Tammy.” This would be her third SAG Award win in as many categories, as she achieved her first one as an ensemble member of the 2011 film “The Help.” It would also make her only the fourth person to ever pull off back-to-back solo SAG Award wins for two different performances.
The special consecutive champions club Chastain is looking to join was formed in 2000 by Angelina Jolie, who was honored that year for her supporting turn in the film “Girl, Interrupted” immediately after her TV movie performance in “Gia” was lauded by the acting guild. After coming up short against Allison Janney on her first Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for 2017’s “Downsizing,” Hong Chau now has a second chance at a supporting victory thanks to her work in “The Whale.” Although she is far from the first woman to compete for the same SAG Award twice, she has broken new ground as the only person of both Asian birth and descent to receive multiple solo film acting nominations from the guild. If she prevails, she will follow Yuh-Jung Youn (2020’s “Minari”) as only the second Asian winner of any individual film SAG Award.

Nearly two decades have passed since the arrest of New Jersey nurse Charles Cullen made national headlines, and now the story of how the serial killer was brought to justice by his coworker, Amy Loughren, has been adapted for the screen under the title “The Good Nurse.” Eddie Redmayne’s performance as Cullen has earned him his sixth Screen Actors Guild Award nomination, which could lead to a history-making victory. Since he already won the lead actor category for 2014’s “The Theory of Everything” and the ensemble award for 2020’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” he only needs to clinch this supporting trophy in order to become the first male recipient of all possible SAG Awards for film acting.
For the first time in nine years, all five supporting actor nominees are new to the category. Paul Dano (“The Fabelmans”) is the only other past SAG Award winner in the bunch,...

There may be hope for Andrea Riseborough to keep her Oscar nomination for “To Leslie,” considering a similar case that didn’t disqualify another surprise nominee from the past, Shohreh Aghdashloo.
In 2004, the Academy was riding a new voting schedule. It had come off implementing new rules for studio marketers that would take some of the negativity and vitriol out of the awards season. However, on Feb. 20, 2004, four days before the final Oscar voting deadline, a print ad in an issue of Daily Variety centered on Shohreh Aghdashloo’s powerful turn in “House of Sand and Fog” (2003).
The ad utilized four excerpts from print and TV news stories praising the supporting actress. Three of them referenced Renee Zellweger as the “will win” and Aghdashloo as the “should win.”
Bruce Davis, the Academy executive director at the time, called it an “attack ad.”
Jeffrey Katzenberg, then head of DreamWorks, and Terry Press,...

The nominations for the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture are among the most difficult to predict. That’s largely because the five contestants are determined by a committee made up of about 2,500 randomly selected SAG-AFTRA cardholders, rather than the guild’s entire membership Despite that, I am confident “The Woman King” cast will receive a Best Film Ensemble nomination at the SAG Awards. Read on for my five reasons why.
In recent years, a number of high-profile films with large and well-known casts have notably been snubbed by the guild’s nominating committee. That includes everything from “The Post,” “The Shape of Water,” “The Favourite” and “Vice” to “Little Women,” “Marriage Story,” “Mank” and “West Side Story.” Meanwhile, voters have surprised us by nominating the likes of “Beasts of No Nation,” “Captain Fantastic,” “The Big Sick,” “Mudbound” and “Parasite...
