Ethan Hawke goes back behind the camera for Wildcat, and here are details of his new film – plus a trailer.
Ethan Hawke is better known as an actor than a director, with a prolific career that has included many collaborations with Richard Linklater – the sublime Before trilogy, Tape, The Newton Boys and Boyhood stand tall. Plus, films as diverse as Dead Poet’s Society, Training Day, The Purge, Predestination and Lord Of War – the sequel to the latter is currently in development, with writer and director Andrew Niccol and star Nicholas Cage on board. It has not been confirmed if Hawke will appear.
However, he has also steadily built up an impressive career behind the camera. Besides co-writing the last two Before films with Linklater and Julie Delpy, he has directed several documentaries and three feature films – Chelsea Walls in 1999, The Hottest State, adapted from his own novel in 2006, and...

Dave Chappelle isn’t exactly toning it down, but his new stand-up special The Dreamer is arguably more reflective and tackles a broader array of topics than his last couple of Netflix efforts.
On Sunday, the controversial comedian returned to Netflix with The Dreamer, his first full-length stand-up special in two years.
The Dreamer plays more like a traditional comedy special than 2021’s ultra-controversial The Closer — which was criticized for being hyper-focused on the trans community and Chappelle defensively responding to his critics — yet the comedian still targets marginalized groups, such as the disabled. One lengthy bit in the new special is about paraplegic former North Carolina Republican representative Madison Cawthorn, who famously alleged he was invited to Washington sex parties. “I don’t doubt they do this shit in Washington [but] who the fuck invites a paraplegic to an orgy?” Chappelle wondered, and, at one point, declared: “I love punching down!

Background noise is one of the biggest headaches in audio recording: anyone who has ever used a microphone knows how difficult it is to deal with environmental noise and electrical interference. Before, you had to record in an expensive studio or use complex software that is time-consuming and difficult to use. This is about to change.
Today, music software developer Tape It released their free AI-powered Denoiser that automatically removes background noise such as hums and hisses. It produces studio-quality results on full songs, single instrument tracks, and field recordings — not just on spoken word. Tape It launched its Denoiser as a free web app and will later implement it into the company’s flagship product, the Tape It iOS app, which helps musicians organize and record song ideas. This tool is part of a bigger strategy to develop tools that simplify recording for musicians.

Lil Uzi Vert’s long-awaited album, Pink Tape, arrived last week and found the eclectic Mc in decidedly new terrain. With features by everyone from Nicki Minaj to New York electro-pop duo Snow Strippers, Pink Tape is as inventive and untethered by convention as Uzi’s forward-thinking fashion sense. As such, reactions to the record have so far been mixed, with traditional rap fans lamenting Uzi’s forays into unknown genre territory and others celebrating the musician’s daring left turns. Regardless of your feelings, it’s made for one...

Across the 26 tracks that comprise Pink Tape, Lil Uzi Vert raps, sings, squeals, screams, and even screeches their way through a little of every genre influence that’s helped define the Philadelphia rapper’s polychrome sound since 2017’s Luv Is Rage 2. The nearly 90-minute album spans heavy metal, energetic pop-punk (“Amped”), hyperpop (“X2”), candy-coated trap (“Days Come and Go” and “Died and Came Back”), and industrial witchcore (“Fire Alarm”).
There’s something of a skeletal framework by which Uzi has sequenced this sprawling opus, one where by the time we get to the hard Jersey Club banger “Just Wanna Rock,” it feels like a natural progression of the album’s wide-ranging vision rather than a leftfield grab for attention. There’s an almost gleefully breathless irreverence to the way Uzi picks up and immediately drops ideas, dipping in and out of different melodic pockets or styles at a moment’s notice.

Lil Uzi Vert is one of the most ambitious rappers of their generation, a true-blue astral traveler who sees the form’s traditions as a matrix to warp in unexpected ways. Their goal is the sort of mental and emotional liberation achievable only through absolute stimulation: the most colors, the biggest sounds, the hardest raps conceivable. Their first two LPs, 2017’s Luv Is Rage 2 and 2020’s Eternal Atake, showed remarkable progress in this aim. They pushed and pulled various strands of contemporary hip-hop — blown-out Soundcloud beats, cavernous psychedelia, flows from...

After years of abandoned release dates, Lil Uzi Vert’s new album Pink Tape has finally arrived.
The album spans 26 songs and includes collaborations with Travis Scott, Nicki Minaj, and Don Toliver. Also featured are metalcore band Bring Me the Horizon and J-pop metal group Babymetal. Plus, Lil Uzi Vert covers System of a Down’s “Chop Suey!” and samples Eiffel 65’s “Blue (Da Ba Dee)” on the Nicki Minaj collab “Endless Fashion.”
The album was preceded by a trailer directed by Gibson Hazard, which really acts as a mini action movie more than anything. The four-minute clip begins with an anime-version of Uzi, whose infamous $24 million pink diamond is ripped from their forehead by some sort of ancient samurai. From there, the video cuts to the real-life rapper, who travels across Japan to retain their ice. The short features heavy trap beats as well as pop punk instrumentals — as...

U.K.- and Hong Kong-based company Phoenix Waters Prods. has formally partnered with Hong Kong’s Agog Films to create Phoenix Waters Asia, a new venture aimed at increasing content production in Asia.
The venture was announced on the sidelines of a film investment conference held Tuesday in Hong Kong at the FilMart rights market, where Phoenix Waters Prods. CEO Bizhan Tong was a speaker.

Netflix has ordered the limited series “The Madness” with Colman Domingo set to star, Variety has learned.
“The Madness,” which will consist of eight episodes, is described as a conspiracy thriller. It centers on “media pundit Muncie Daniels (Domingo), who must fight for his innocence and his life after he stumbles upon a murder deep in the Poconos woods. As the walls close in, Muncie strives to reconnect with his estranged family – and his lost ideals – in order to survive.”
“‘The Madness’ is a fresh take on the conspiracy thriller — turning the genre on its head with its multi-layered characters, propulsive action and swift pace,” said Peter Friedlander, vice president of scripted series at Netflix for the US and Canada. “We are proud to have such a powerhouse team assembled to bring this dynamic story to life for Netflix viewers around the world, and to continue producing great entertainment with team Chernin.

Well, I was not expecting this: Orphan: First Kill, a prequel to 2009’s horror mystery Orphan, is better than its progenitor. No, scratch that: First Kill is, rather, not quite as bad as the previous movie. Still, this is a rare cinematic occurrence, and one to be commended, no matter how qualified.
The thing about the 2009 movie is that it played like a parody of horror movies, and, alas, not a knowing one. It had little beyond overbaked tropes of the genre: the “scary” music, the “menacing” camera angles, the telegraphing of every boo. Its big twist — look away now if you don’t want a 13-year-old movie spoiled — is that its central “sinister child,” the orphan of the title, is not, in fact, nine years old but actually an adult with a pituitary disorder that leaves her perpetually childlike in body. Though not childlike in mind: she’s cunning and devious,...

May on the Criterion Channel will be good to the auteurs. In fact they’re giving Richard Linklater better treatment than the distributor of his last film, with a 13-title retrospective mixing usual suspects—the Before trilogy, Boyhood, Slacker—with some truly off the beaten track. There’s a few shorts I haven’t seen but most intriguing is Heads I Win/Tails You Lose, the only available description of which calls it a four-hour (!) piece “edited together by Richard Linklater in 1991 from film countdowns and tail leaders from films submitted to the Austin Film Society in Austin, Texas from 1987 to 1990. It is Linklater’s tribute to the film countdown, used by many projectionists over the years to cue one reel of film after another when switching to another reel on another projector during projection.” Pair that with 2008’s Inning by Inning: A Portrait of a Coach and your completionism will be on-track.

And today we talk about Handsome Hawke himself – Ethan Hawke! The multi-hyphenate has made a career out of B-Sides, and today we choose four: Great Expectations, Snow Falling on Cedars, Tape, and Predestination. Conor and I are lucky to have the great Luke Hicks along for the ride.
We discuss the early films of Hawke, the hotness of “Shark Hunter Hawke” in Great Expectations, his movie star run in the late ‘90s and early ‘00s, and his diverse pivot into character work up to and including the present.
There’s also talk of Hawke’s directorial career, some debate over is the deliberate pace of Snow Falling on Cedars actually works, and this in-depth piece on Predestination.

Karlovy Vary Intl. Film Festival, the leading cinema event in Central and Eastern Europe, will honor American actor, director, and writer Ethan Hawke, who will receive the Festival President’s Award at its 55th edition, taking place Aug. 20-28. The award is given to actors, directors, and producers who have “contributed in a fundamental way to the development of contemporary world cinema.”
“We are thrilled to welcome to Karlovy Vary an artist we’ve been admiring for a long time. In 2018, Kviff paid tribute to the Austin Film Society and it is exciting to extend our appreciation of this renowned organization’s work by honoring an actor and director who is so closely connected to the Texas independent film scene,” said artistic director Karel Och and executive director Krystof Mucha.
Hawke will personally introduce Paul Schrader’s thriller “First Reformed,” in which he portrays a parish pastor experiencing a crisis of faith.

Amm Global, a production and investment company spun out of Hong Kong’s Asia Television, and Phoenix Waters Productions have announced “Crypto Keepers,” which they claim will be Asia’s first Nft drama series.
NFTs or non-fungible tokens, which aim to lock in the value of digital intellectual property, have taken the art and music worlds by storm and are now being expanded into more traditional media spheres.
The drama, an English and Cantonese language hybrid, is planned to shoot across multiple countries with the fictional narrative taking place against a backdrop of real events, with figures in the cryptocurrency space appearing on the show. It will be presented as 12 episodes, executive directed by Philip Ma, and delivered in 2022. The producers have not yet finalized a distribution company.
The story follows a group of young Hongkongers competing with a team of American bankers to create the next Bitcoin-like digital currency.

When you begin the journey of making a feature, especially in documentary filmmaking, you may be, depending on the subject you are investigating, in for a surprise during the production, because often you may not arrive at the goal you wished for, but instead uncover something completely different. Perhaps the best documentary directors are those who embrace this quality about the process of researching and filming, who find the right balance between sticking to a schedule while also being open to whatever comes their way. Although there are many others who fulfill those criteria, Indian director Amit Dutta has repeatedly proven his awareness for these opportunities. At the same time, his body of work in essence demands this open mind from its viewer, which, in return, may open the door for quite an experience.
In 2008, Amit Dutta embarked on a journey to the native town of iconic Indian artist Jangarh Singh Shyam,...

"Following my method will get you where you need to go in the quickest route possible." Full Moon Films has debuted an official trailer for an indie drama titled simply Tape, the latest film by director Deborah Kampmeier. Based on true events and set in New York City, Tape is the story of an aspiring actress who crosses paths with the darker side of the entertainment industry. The film sounds a bit inspired by Harvey Weinstein (and Rose McGowan) and what he would make actresses go through. Here's a more compelling description: "This film addresses burning societal curiosities, taking the audience into the room where questionable behavior goes unseen, finally answering the question 'how could this kind of thing happen?' More than a film, Tape is a visceral moment-by-moment unveiling of the way ambitious and everyday women are systematically coerced and taken advantage of." This stars Isabelle Fuhrman, with Annarosa Mudd,...

With “Last Flag Flying” arriving in theaters, we’re taking on the not-so-simple task of ranking the movies of genre-hopping director Richard Linklater. The top titles on this list could rightfully be called modern classics, but every one of his films somehow evokes the heartfelt philosophy of his hypnotic “Waking Life”: human interaction is the highest form of spiritual communion.
20. “Bad News Bears” (2005)
The 1976 original was a true product of its time, with an all-star lineup led by Walter Matthau and Tatum O’Neal, but this unnecessary remake just felt like it was trying too hard. By 2005, the sight of an aggressively un-pc Little League coach (Billy Bob Thornton) encouraging outrageous behavior in his young team seemed less subversive than sad.
19. “Fast Food Nation” (2006)
When truth is stranger than fiction, why turn it into fiction? Linklater admirably attempted to create a multi-course meal out of Eric Schlosser’s bestselling book,...

Exclusive: Stephen Belber has been hired to script The Needle and The Damage Done for Mike Tollin and Peter Guber which is based on journalist Paul Solotaroff’s article on the opioid epidemic. The project is now being done at USA Networks through Ucp. The rights for the project were picked up last fall.
The story goes in-depth about the fentanyl epidemic which is currently devastating the suburban communities of New England. The 8,000-word article appeared last October in Men’s Journal delves into a local DEA bureau chief’s relentless pursuit to fight the war on drugs.
“When you look at the numbers, it’s an epidemic of unprecedented proportion,” Tollin told Deadline. “And we have a chance to raise awareness. The man’s whose life we are focusing the story on understands that awareness is one of his priorities, his job. He’s a superstar DEA agent who recognizes this and welcomes it.

In his new film “First Reformed,” Ethan Hawke stars as Reverend Toller, an ailing former military chaplain, who counsels an expectant father so disturbed by climate change that he wants his wife to get an abortion. As the narrative — from writer/director Paul Schrader — progresses, Toller learns that one of the nation’s biggest polluters paid for the upgrades to his church, yet nonetheless assumes the young man’s environmentalist mantle.
A clergyman is “not a role that you often see fully explored in movies,” Hawke told IndieWire during a recent interview. “You see people dressed up as priests and they’re robbing a bank, or they’re in ‘Cannonball Run,’ or you see evil priests in horror movies, and things like that…I really was grateful for not the opportunity to play a [pastor], but this one.”

“Lady Bird” (A24), Greta Gerwig’s first solo directing effort, rode a wave of strong reviews and publicity to score the best limited opener of the year. After a disappointing prime specialty season when it has become easy to forget what a strong limited platform opening can be, her valentine to her home town of Sacramento starring Saorise Ronan debuted even higher than expectations.
This success stood in sharp contrast to the weak opening for Richard Linklater’s “Last Flag Flying” (Lionsgate). Despite a strong push for the Amazon presentation, which opened the New York Film Festival, the military veteran drama starring Bryan Cranston, Steve Carell and Laurence Fishburne couldn’t pull in specialty audiences.

James + Semaj is a column where James Franco talks to his reverse self, Semaj, about new films. Rather than a conventional review, it is place where James and Semaj can muse about ideas that the films provoke. James loves going to the movies and talking about them. But a one-sided take on a movie, in print, might be misconstrued as a review. As someone in the industry it could be detrimental to James’s career if he were to review his peers, because unlike the book industry—where writers review other writer’s books—the film industry is highly collaborative, and a bad review of a peer could create problems. So, assume that James (and Semaj) love all these films. What they’re interested in talking about is all the ways the films inspire them, and make them think. James is me, and Semaj is the other side of me.

Austin, Texas filmmaker Richard Linklater helped define the 1990s American indie scene with “Slacker,” a loose collection of conversations with real and invented personalities from the local Austin scene. That first film set a pattern for the filmmaker, who often employs large casts to create sprawling slice of life portraits. The lineup in “Dazed and Confused” could overwhelm a “best characters” list from many other filmmakers, and then there are the “Before” trilogy, “Boyhood,” and the new “Everybody Wants Some!!” to consider, among many others. Read More: SXSW Review: Richard Linklater’s ‘Everybody Wants Some!!’ With Blake Jenner, Tyler Hoechlin, Zoey Deutch & More While often an author of his own scripts, Linklater has adapted material by Eric Bogosian (“SubUrbia”), Eric Schlosser (“Fast Food Nation”), Stephen Belber (“Tape”), Philip K. Dick (“A Scanner Darkly”), and Bill Lancaster (“Bad News Bears”). Even in those cases, the director’s methods and style...

A hangout movie largely devoid of major conflict, Richard Linklater's Everybody Wants Some!! is an easygoing, carefree, and hilarious exploration of youth and philosophy viewed through the prism of an east Texas college baseball team in 1980. It's alternately raucous, touching, sweet, and silly, but it's almost always hilarious. This is one of my favorite films of 2016 so far.
Linklater is one of the true chameleons of American film, able to slip between genres and legitimately make it feel as if he's mastered any given one at a particular time. Look at intimate, talky dramas like the Before trilogy or Boyhood, fun projects aimed at kids like School of Rock and Bad News Bears, and more heady adult pieces like Tape or A Scanner Darkly — they all have an assured sense of control to them. His period piece comedies, epitomized by Dazed and Confused and that film's spiritual sequel, Everybody Wants Some!

Despite its muted release in the Us, Two Night Stand - starring Miles Teller and Analeigh Tipton - is pretty decent.
Well, I wasn't expecting much from this. Arriving in the UK on the back of precious little fanfare, Two Night Stand is a sort of romantic comedy with a simple premise: what happens the day after the one night stand? Specifically, when you've had a one night stand with someone, and then find yourself unable to leave their apartment the following day, thanks to some cheap-looking CG snow on the outside?
It's the conundrum facing Megan (Analeigh Tipton) and Alec (Miles Teller), who discover they don't particularly like each other, once they've rumped, pumped and trumped. It's Megan who's the catalyst for the film's narrative, as it's she we see setting up the quickie online following the ending of her relationship with her fiancee. She merrily trots over to Alec's place,...

Most Richard Linklater fans can tell you which film – and sometimes which scene – ignited their enthusiasm for the director, whether it was 1991’s influential indie Slacker, 1993’s high-school classic Dazed and Confused or 2003’s comedy School of Rock.
But, it all began with Before Sunrise.
Released 20 years ago this week, Before Sunrise boasted fresh-faced actors and a swoon-worthy premise: An American man (Ethan Hawke) meets a French woman (Julie Delpy) on a train, and they spend one magical evening together in Vienna. That alone was enough to attract my 17-year-old self to the theater, as was the case with many of my peers.

The true magic of Before Sunrise, however, lies beyond the picturesque scenery and smitten gazes. Building upon his gift for crafting relatable and engrossing conversation, Linklater’s characters feel fully formed, discussing everything from philosophy and religion to love and their hopes for the future.

"Boyhood" has been steamrolling in the critics phase of the awards season, something we all saw coming. But today the film received some real, tangible love from an actual industry organization: the Screen Actors Guild Awards. For Hawke, it all makes for the biggest of cherries on top of a hugely fulfilling creative endeavor. "I've done eight movies with Richard Linklater," the actor says by telephone. While Star Trek: The Next Generation and The X-Men franchise are both greatly enjoyable enterprises, it is easy to lose sight of the fact that Patrick Stewart is a world class performer. While those giant projects allow him to get a little lost in the shuffle, it takes a smaller, more intimate movie to remind us that this actor is really quite remarkable. Thankfully, Stewart has recently been obliging us with a few such projects, and the trailer for one of them – Match – has just been released.
Written and directed by Stephen Belber, Match is the filmmaker’s second time at the helm, following 2008’s Management, starring Steve Zahn and Jennifer Aniston. Match, however, seems to owe a lot to Belber’s first screenplay – 2001’s Tape – which he adapted from his own play.
Like Tape, Match focuses on a trio of characters in an intimate setting, slowly unpicking each other’s perceived realities.

The compelling indie “Match," starring Patrick Stewart, Carla Gugino and Matthew Lillard screened at the Tribeca Film Festival this past fall. The cast alone is intriguing, especially since Lillard returned to form after “The Descendants.” Directed by playwright/filmmaker Stephen Belber (the pen behind "Tape" with Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman), the film centers on a Seattle woman and her husband (Gugino and Lillard) coming to New York to conduct an interview with a Juilliard ballet professor (Stewart) for her dissertation on the history of dance in the 1960s. But it becomes increasingly clear during these extensive inquiries that there are ulterior motives to the couple's visit. Here’s the official synopsis: Iconic actor Patrick Stewart gives one of his most emotional performances in this character driven drama playing high-spirited Tobias “Tobi” Powell, a master dance teacher at Julliard with a lifetime of...

When you make movies about people, an eye for casting becomes an auteurist stamp. Richard Linklater knows his characters so well — their personalities, their movements, their sounds — that by the time he inserts actors into each part, the choices feel like absolutes. Take the "Before" series. It’s a war crime to fantasy cast alternatives for Celine and Jesse. Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke are too perfect. Just try. Nope. Not the same movie. Can’t do it. Impossible. In a testament to Linklater’s knack for spotting talent, the Casting Society of America will present two-time Academy Award-nominee with their Career Achievement Award at the 30th Annual Artios Awards. “Richard is a filmmaker whose work is both current and timeless. To American audiences exploring the indie film scene in the 1990s, few names mattered as much as Richard Linklater’s. One of Generation X’s essential voices, Linklater’s idiosyncratic dialogue-driven efforts – Slacker, Before Sunrise, Dazed & Confused, to name a few – struck a nerve among film fans across the country and beyond. On the verge of earning his first Oscar nomination for Best Director for the coming-of-adolescence masterwork Boyhood, the indie underdog is finally starting to reap the praises he has deserved since starting his career nearly 25 years ago.
Boyhood brought the writer/director virtually unanimous praise from critics and audiences. The Digital Era: Real-time Films From 2000 To Today
40 years before, in 1960, lighter cameras enabled a cinéma vérité-flavored revolution in street realism. By 2000, new digital cameras suggested a whole new set of promises, including telling stories that would have been unimaginable within minimum budgets for features even ten years before. In 2000, film purists warned that digital still didn’t look as good as celluloid, but that didn’t stop at least three innovative filmmakers from boldly going where no filmmaker had gone before. Mike Figgis’ Timecode (2000) was the first star-supported (Salma Hayek, Stellan Skarsgard, Holly Hunter, among many others) single-shot project since Rope, underlining that earlier film’s timelessness. If Run Lola Run could do one story three times, then Timecode would do three or four stories one time: the movie is four separate ninety-minute shots shown all at the same time, each in one quadrant of the screen. Where do you look?...
