Not so fast Savant — with the help of correspondent input, DVD Savant presents more information on David Swift’s adaptation of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying — correcting and modifying some assumptions in my first review. Don’t worry — it’s good reading.
A Savant article
This is an odd circumstance. I routinely update, modify, correct and de-stupidify DVD Savant reviews, but this time I’m taking a more radical step. In my March 25 coverage of Twilight Time’s Blu-ray of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, I made a big point of the fact that David Swift’s film adaptation had not made many changes. Several songs were dropped, but that would seem the right thing to do considering that the movie wasn’t planned as a Road Show — it’s only 121 minutes in duration and has no break for an intermission. The much missed...

Kristin Chenoweth has joined NBC’s “Hairspray Live!” opposite Harvey Fierstein, Jennifer Hudson, Martin Short, Derek Hough and newcomer Maddie Baillio.
The Broadway vet will star as Velma Von Tussle, the self-promoting and manipulative producer of “The Corny Collins Show.” In the musical, Velma “will stop at nothing to make her daughter, Amber, the star that Velma never was. Her biggest foe is Tracy Turnblad (Baillio) and she’ll do everything in her power to prevent the integration of the “Corny Collins Show” which Tracy wants so much.

NBC can't stop the beat, even if it wanted to: Fresh off the widespread acclaim for its version of The Wiz, the network announced at the TCA tour on Wednesday that its next prime-time theater event will be a live production of Hairspray, Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman's musical adaptation of the 1988 John Waters film. Hairspray apparently triumphed over other ideas, like The Music Man, which producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron told THR would have been too dependent on perfect casting for Harold Hill, and A Few Good Men, which had complicated rights issues. In the end, the candy-colored '60s musical was a perfect choice to head off the inevitable online snark: You're gonna feel so bad about tweeting mean things about the nicest kids in town.

NBC’s next live musical event will come with a literal twist (or, more likely, dozens of ‘em).

Manuel here bringing some exciting news for us musical junkies.
We've got magic to do... Just for you
It seems we have another big screen Broadway adaptation coming our way courtesy of Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, a pair of producers who have almost single-handedly kept the screen musical alive. NBC’s Sound of Music Live? Zadan & Meron! Oscar-winning Chicago, SAG-nominated Hairspray and Emmy-nominee Smash? Yep, you guessed it: Zadan & Meron! They are even responsible for some of the less celebrated attempts at live action adaptations of Broadway musicals, from the swiftly forgotten 2003 adaptation of The Music Man featuring Matthew Broderick and the Kathy Bates-led 1999 Annie to the Bette Midler TV adaptation of Gypsy back in 1993.
Needless to say, they’re invested in this genre in ways not many other producers are. We can argue about their batting average. For every attempt at ‘modernizing’ a piece to its very detriment -- see 2011’s Footloose,...

NBC will air a live adaptation of Aaron Sorkin's critically-acclaimed play A Few Good Men.
The Peacock Network is working on a new live theatre event with Peter Pan Live! producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, reports Variety.
Five-time Emmy Award winner Sorkin will reportedly re-work A Few Good Men specifically for a television adaptation.
NBC had success last year with its primetime event The Sound of Music Live!, and will air follow-up Peter Pan Live! in December.
A version of The Music Man is also in the works.
A Few Good Men debuted on Broadway in 1989, with original cast member Tom Hulce earning a Tony Award nomination for his portrayal of Lt Daniel Kaffee.
The legal drama - which centres on the murder trial of two marines - was later adapted by Sorkin into an Oscar-nominated feature film starring Tom Cruise and Jack Nicholson.

With the May 12 announcement that NBC will follow up its live presentation of “Peter Pan” (previously seen on TV starring Mary Martin in 1960) with a production of “The Music Man” (which aired in a new TV adaptation starring Matthew Broderick and Kristin Chenoweth in 2003), Backstage looks back on other frequent musical visitors. “Once Upon a Mattress” (1964, 1972, 2005) The original Broadway production of “Once Upon a Mattress” made Carol Burnett an overnight star—and she reprised her performance as Winnifred the Woebegone for TV audiences twice, first in black and white in 1964, and then in living color in 1972 in a production that co-starred Bernadette Peters. Updated: Following the big ratings success of The Sound Of Music Live! last December, NBC in January set a live production of Peter Pan as its next event musical. With that project in the casting stages, NBC has lined up a third live musical production, The Music Man, for 2015, the network’s chairman Bob Greenblatt announced at the NBC upfront presentation today. No details were given though I hear the network is looking to bring in prolific producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron to shepherd the project. The duo is behind NBC’s hugely successful Sound Of Music special and they are also are attached to Peter Pan. Additionally, Zadan and Meron know The Music Man musical very well as they produced the previous TV adaptation for ABC in 2003 starring Matthew Broderick and Kristin Chenoweth. I probably speak for most theater fans in saying I was excited when I read about Smash before its premiere on NBC in February. The idea of a weekly network series depicting the development of a new Broadway musical was irresistible. The fact that so many theater people -- both on and off camera -- were involved in the show added to the anticipation. Executive producers included Craig Zadan and Neil Meron who, among other things, have produced film versions of Broadway hits Chicago and Hairspray, along with television movie adaptations of The Music Man, Annie, and Gypsy. Broderick guest-starred on "30 Rock" in 2008 and has starred in several TV movies (most recently "The Music Man" on ABC in 2003), but "Beach Lane" would be his first full-time commitment to a TV series.

NEW YORK -- Another Wednesday that featured a reality smackdown between NBC and Fox ended with Fox on top, but the biggest loser was ABC, which matched historic lows for the night with more abysmal ratings for The One. Following up on Tuesday's rock-bottom ratings for the two-hour premiere, "One" did even worse Wednesday night. ABC ended up in UPN-WB Network territory in viewership and the demo and was beaten in the demo in primetime by Disney Channel, USA Network, TNT, TBS and Bravo, according to Nielsen Media Research. ABC's 0.7 rating Wednesday night -- for a repeat of the "One" premiere and then an hourlong results show -- tied for the network's lowest-ever delivery in the demo since 1991. The other 0.7 rating came on July 4, 2004, with a Sunday night repeat of the movie The Music Man. ABC's average viewership of 2.2 million wasn't the lowest ever; that distinction went to a hockey game in May 2004.

Sex And The City star Sarah Jessica Parker has a new man in her life -- the Golden Globe-winning actress gave birth to a baby boy on Monday morning at Lenox Hill Hospital on Manhattan's Upper East Side, the New York Post reports. Parker, 37, gave birth around 3 A.M. on October 28 to son David Perkins Broderick in what was reported to be a very short and easy labor; husband Matthew Broderick was with her in the delivery room. New visitors were reported to include Sex co-star Cynthia Nixon, who is herself expecting, as well as family and close friends. This is the first child for both Parker and Broderick, who each have upcoming projects sure to keep them in the spotlight while tending to their newborn: Broderick's star turn in the TV adaptation of The Music Man is scheduled to air in February 2003, and Parker is expecting to resume shooting on Sex and the Ciy around the same time. --Prepared by IMDb staff...
