After the success of their Oscar-nominated collaboration on the 2013 drama “Philomena,” starring Judi Dench, director Stephen Frears and star-screenwriter Steve Coogan were eager to team up once again — similarly this time on a true-life-inspired tale about amateur sleuthing.
“The Lost King” tells the story of Philippa Langley (Sally Hawkins), a self-guided historian who seemingly stumbles upon the remains of Richard III, only to be thwarted by various forces that doubt her discovery, much of them in academia.
Frears and Coogan stopped by TheWrap and Shutterstock’s Interview and Portrait Studio at the Toronto International Film Festival to discuss what drew them to work together on this unique project, which also rejoined them with “Philomena” composer Alexandre Desplat, co-writer Jeff Pope and producer Christine Langan.

“I really like quirky little things that have never been done before,” explains “Hangmen” star Tracie Bennett. The Tony-nominated actress has enjoyed a varied career on stage, which has seen her oscillate between musicals and dramas, “swirling these little plates of variety,” as she puts it. She recently opened Martin McDonagh’s new dark comedy on Broadway, which puts all of her skills to use as the owner of a small town pub. The combination of the playwright’s dark humor with the technical requirements of the production, makes for a one-of-a-kind challenge for the actress. Watch the exclusive video interview above.

“I’ve never done anything more technical than this,” reveals Bennett. It’s quite the extraordinary claim for a performer who began her career as a stuntwoman. She may not be performing stunts in this play, but every bit of action is...

The 2022 Oscar nominees for Best Supporting Actress are Jessie Buckley (“The Lost Daughter”), Ariana DeBose (“West Side Story”), Judi Dench (“Belfast”), Kirsten Dunst (“The Power of the Dog”), and Aunjanue Ellis (“King Richard”). Our odds currently indicate that DeBose (31/10) will emerge victorious, followed in order of likelihood by Dunst (39/10), Ellis (9/2), Buckley (9/2), and Dench (9/2).
Dench is the only previous nominee among the five, having amassed three supporting and five lead bids during her career. She is now one of 25 women with as many featured notices and could follow Shelley Winters and Dianne Wiest by becoming the category’s third dual champion, since she already took the gold for “Shakespeare in Love” (1999). Her second supporting nomination came for “Chocolat” (2001), and she earned her lead ones for “Mrs. Brown” (1998), “Iris” (2002), “Mrs. Henderson Presents” (2006), “Notes on a Scandal” (2007), and “Philomena” (2014).

‘Belfast’ leads the charge for British talent at this year’s Academy Awards.

It is Branagh’s eighth nomination and second in the best director category. He is also nominated for best picture and original screenplay this year. The Oscars returned to a hard slate of 10 Best Picture nominees this year, but ironically, for the first time in the preferential ballot era, none of the Best Actress Oscar nominees are in a Best Picture nominee.
Jessica Chastain (“The Eyes of Tammy Faye”), Olivia Colman (“The Lost Daughter”), Penelope Cruz (“Parallel Mothers”), Nicole Kidman (“Being the Ricardos”) and Kristen Stewart (“Spencer”) made the final five on Tuesday, but none of their films are in the top 10. The Best Picture nominees were “Belfast,” “Coda,” “Don’t Look Up,” “Drive My Car,” “Dune,” “King Richard,” “Licorice Pizza,” “Nightmare Alley,” “The Power of the Dog” and “West Side Story.”
The last time none of the Best Actress nominees were in a Best Picture nominee was 16 years ago, when the main category was still a field of five. Reese Witherspoon won Best Actress for “Walk the Line” over Judi Dench (“Mrs. Henderson Presents”), Felicity Huffman...

In late 2008, Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight” — a zeitgeist-infused superhero sequel that would come to be widely regarded as the best in the genre — was on a crash-course with major Oscar recognition. Nominations from the producers, directors, and writers guilds, as well as a monster domestic box office haul north of $500 million, only firmed up expectations.
Then, “The Reader” happened. The Stephen Daldry drama, steeped in Oscar-friendly Holocaust trappings, was muscled into the race by Harvey Weinstein at a time when the now-disgraced mogul’s Miramax glory days were fast-becoming a distant memory, and the awards outlook for his newly formed Weinstein Co. was increasingly dim. (Movies like “Mrs Henderson Presents” and “Bobby” had failed to connect with voters.) “The Reader” nailed down nominations for best picture, director, and adapted screenplay, effectively boxing out Nolan’s critically acclaimed blockbuster in the top fields.

The Oscar for Best Supporting Actress went to a wide swath of talented actresses in the 1990s, including Whoopi Goldberg, Marisa Tomei, Anna Paquin, Judi Dench and Angelina Jolie. A surprising amount of comedic performances won this category in the ’90s, especially for an academy that typically prefers drama. Which Best Supporting Actress winner is your favorite?

Up until a few years ago, Queen Victoria, Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and Empress of India, was the longest reigning monarch. That is until Queen Elizabeth II, her great-great granddaughter surpassed her in September 2015. Elizabeth has been Queen since 1952.
With a reign of 63 years, seven months and two days, Victoria was the longest-reigning British monarch and the longest-reigning queen regnant in world history.
Focus Features has released the first poster and trailer for the upcoming Victoria & Abdul, from director Stephen Frears (The Queen,” “Philomena,” “Mrs. Henderson Presents”). The cast features Judi Dench, Ali Fazal, Adeel Akhtar, Simon Callow, Eddie Izzard, Ruth McCabe, Tim Pigott-Smith, Julian Wadham, Olivia Williams, Fenella Woolgar and Michael Gambon.
Many fans of the 1997’s Mrs. Brown wanted more of the story of a bereaved Queen Victoria (Judi Dench) and her relationship with a Scottish servant, John Brown (Billy Connolly), and the subsequent uproar it provoked.

Totally relaxed in his Ritz-Carleton suite on Central Park South, his arms spread wide on a rather tasteful couch, Stephen Frears held court not at all like the monarch in his biggest success, The Queen, (2006). His press conference for his latest effort, Florence Foster Jenkins, will take place one hour later with about 40 journalists in attendance. His stars -- Meryl Streep, Hugh Grant, and The Big Bang Theory’s Simon Helberg -- would then be asked 95% of the questions. Not surprising. Directors, for the most, part do not drive traffic to web sites, sadly, even ones as near legendary as Frears.
Besides helming six of his past female leads to Academy-Award-nominated performances (Michelle Pfeiffer and Glenn Close in Dangerous Liaisons, Anjelica Huston and Annette Bening in The Grifters, plus Judi Dench in both Philomena and Mrs. Henderson Presents) and one Oscar win (Helen Mirren as the aforementioned queen), Frears has...

Manuel here with some Streeptastic news.
Meryl Streep has just signed on to play Florence Foster Jenkins in an upcoming Stephen Frears film. Florence will follow the eponymous protagonist, a New York heiress whose lack of musical talent didn’t stop her from pursuing a career in opera in the early twentieth century. This should be good news for us Streep fans because it means we may get three back-to-back-to-back musically-centered Meryl films in a row. Remember she’s set to play Maria Callas for Mike Nichols’ HBO adaptation of Terence McNally’s Master Class while she’s currently filming Ricky and the Flash, the Diablo Cody-penned Jonathan Demme film about an aging rock-star. More thrillingly, the Frears/Demme/Nichols triple punch is the closest we’ve gotten in a while to Streep committing to working with top-tier directing talent (no offense to David Frankel, Philippa Lloyd and Philip Noyce...

For the concerns in some quarters that Birdman might be too cerebral or idiosyncratic for Oscar, I offer thisfoolproof rebuttal: It's about the theater!
Oscar has a long history of mad love for theater movies from early musicals which were often about vaudeville through biopics about theater giants and on to today's more playful genre hybrids. Even when the Academy doesn't fully commit to its latest greasepaint and footlights suitor, it will often give him a quick kiss in the form of a nomination or three. Some examples: To Be Or Not To Be (1942 & 1983), Being Julia (2004), Mrs Henderson Presents (2005), The Producers (1967), 42nd Street (1934), and The Bandwagon (1953). While it's true there are exceptions that they completely ignore (Stage Beauty, Waiting for Guffman, Opening Night) it's a subject matter that appeals to showbiz people and showbiz people like congratulating their own.
Oscar's 10 Favorite Theater Movies
Why didn't you include Cabaret, Black Swan or Chicago in this list?...

Why didn't you include Cabaret, Black Swan or Chicago in this list?...

Stephen Frears has lined up a pretty high profile pair of actors for his next biopic. Based on the life of socialite turned opera singer Florence Foster Jenkins, Florence will star Meryl Streep in the title role with Hugh Grant as her significant other. Frears has become best known in recent years for his political films like The Queen and Philomena, but he also has a background in more comedic fare like High Fidelity and Mrs Henderson Presents. The story of Florence may not be one...

We're not going to lie - when we found out that Zoe Birkett was entering the Big Brother house earlier this week, the Digital Spy office got very excited indeed. What a blast from the past - and how much the "little podgy kid from Pop Idol with the dreadlocks" (her words, not ours) has grown up in the last 13 years. But it got us thinking - what happened to the other contestants? We put on our deerstalker, pulled out our magnifying glass and started digging...

Bob Hoskins dead at 71: Hoskins’ best movies included ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit,’ ‘Mona Lisa’ (photo: Bob Hoskins in ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit’ with Jessica Rabbit, voiced by Kathleen Turner) Bob Hoskins, who died at age 71 in London yesterday, April 29, 2014, from pneumonia (initially reported as “complications of Parkinson’s disease”), was featured in nearly 70 movies over the course of his four-decade film career. Hoskins was never a major box office draw — "I don’t think I’m the sort of material movie stars are made of — I’m five-foot-six-inches and cubic. My own mum wouldn’t call me pretty." Yet, this performer with attributes similar to those of Edward G. Robinson, James Cagney, and Lon Chaney had the lead in one of the biggest hits of the late ’80s. In 1988, Robert Zemeckis’ groundbreaking Who Framed Roger Rabbit, which seamlessly blended animated and live action footage, starred Hoskins as gumshoe Eddie Valiant,...

Bob Hoskins, the celebrated English actor who brought gravitas and a wicked smile to any genre he worked in, from crime thrillers like The Long Good Friday to fantasy comedies such as Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Hook, died from pneumonia Tuesday. He was 71.
The actor claimed to have never taken any acting lessons – according to him, he was waiting at a theatre bar for a friend to finish an audition when someone gave him a script and said, “You’re next.” He scored the part at that audition and soon after, the short-statured Hoskins became a giant on the stage and screen, beloved by audiences around the world.
Hoskins appeared in various UK television series and mini-series during the 1970s, when he also found a calling on the British stage. However, the actor broke through on the big screen in the 1980s. His first major role was in the...

I'm hugely saddened to report that Oscar-nominated British actor Bob Hoskins -- the quintessential Cockney gent of latter-day cinema -- has passed away. Aged 71, he died in hospital following a bout of pneumonia. His wife, Linda, and four children issued a statement clarifying that the Londoner "died peacefully at hospital last night surrounded by family," and thanked well-wishers for their "messages of love and support." Hoskins' health had been declining for some time: he retired from acting in 2012 after being diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. His last screen role was in "Snow White and the Huntsman." After supporting roles in such films as "Zulu Dawn" and a BAFTA-nominated turn in Dennis Potter's TV landmark "Pennies From Heaven," Hoskins' film breakthrough came in his late thirties with the role of conflicted East End crime boss Harold Shand in the 1980 gangster classic "The Long Good Friday," which earned him another BAFTA nod.

Actor reveals macular degeneration has left her unable to read scripts or watch films – but says 'somehow I get by'
The Oscar-winning actor Dame Judi Dench has spoken of how her failing eyesight has left her unable to read scripts and struggling to watch films.
Dench suffers from macular degeneration, an age-related condition that leads to a gradual loss of vision, which her mother also had.
But the actor, 79, who has notched up 95 award nominations during her illustrious career, balked at suggestions her career would slow down because of failing health.
She told the Hollywood Reporter: "I never want to make much of it, but it is difficult – very, very difficult.
"I can't read any more. I can't paint like I used to. I try to watch movies, but it's quite difficult. But these are all of the negatives. I don't want to really think about all that. What I can do,...

Oscar Predictions 2014: Best Actress (photo: Meryl Streep in ‘August: Osage County’) (See also: "Oscar Predictions 2014: Best Actor.") Compared to the vibrant Best Actor field, the 2014 Academy Awards’ Best Actress category looks somewhat anemic. Not in terms of quality, but in terms of quantity. Whereas ten actors could be called strong competitors for the Oscar 2014 shortlist, only five actresses can be considered truly strong candidates for this year’s Best Actress shortlist. Besides these five, there are three unlikely runners-up and a handful of long shots — and we mean "long" as in "light-years-away long." Note: Exact SAG Award and Academy Award matches are actually less common than you might think for the reasons mentioned in our previous Oscar 2014 predictions post (see link in the paragraph above). For instance, last year Marion Cotillard and Helen Mirren were both shortlisted for the Best Actress SAG Awards for, respectively, Jacques Audiard’s...

Good things come to those who wait. For Judi Dench that good thing would be movie stardom. She's been acting on stage since 1957 (as Ophelia in Hamlet at the age of 23), on tv since 1959 (the title role in Hilda Lessways), and on the silver screen since 1964 (The Third Secret)... but it wasn't until 1997/1998 when Dench hit her sixties that true movie stardom happened, prompted by the double whammy of her first Oscar bid (Mrs Brown) and its follow up "oops sorry about last year" Oscar win for Shakespeare in Love (recently discussed). Isn't her career trajectory unheard of? Who doesn't even start being a movie star until their sixties? Dame Judi thats who.
Though she may soon retire (she's turning 80 a year from now) she's still in her movie prime. Her latest starring role is as Philomena, the story of a woman seeking the grown son she gave up for adoption,...

Judi Dench in ‘Philomena’ movie: The one British Independent Film Award nominee surely to get BAFTA, Academy Award nominations Among the 2013 British Independent Film Award nominees, only one has a truly good chance of being shortlisted for both the BAFTAs and the Academy Awards. That’s Best Actress Bifa nominee Judi Dench for Stephen Frears’ "based on a true story" drama Philomena, in which Dench plays a woman whose son was taken away from her after she was sent to a convent. For the record, Dench has four previous Best Actress Oscar nominations (Mrs. Brown, Iris, Mrs. Henderson Presents, Notes on a Scandal), in addition to one win and a nomination as Best Supporting Actress (win: Shakespeare in Love; nomination: Chocolat). Steve Coogan and Judi Dench make a terrific odd couple in this gripping account of the search for a long-lost child
Steve Coogan has long been a bruiser. But lately he's become a crusader. Watch him go into battle on Question Time or Newsnight, or at the Leveson inquiry, or in the papers, and the figure he cuts is not light entertainer but lay preacher – a fireball with bristles, angry and unabashed.
And just as his stomach for action has strengthened, so the tone of his work has changed. A few years ago he optioned a biography of Soho mogul Paul Raymond, which became The Look of Love – whose clear message was that we mustn't mistake free love for moral laxity, nor measure a man's nobility in threesomes alone. Even Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa was a cautionary tale about insufficient regulation of media conglomerates.

After a quiet six or seven months on the Best Actress front we have two real contenders (Cate Blanchett & Brie Larson) and in the fall and winter the usual glut of heavy hitters. We've already seen trailers for Meryl's 4th Oscar plea, Emma's comeback and Sandra's tease. And now... Dame Judi Dench as Philomena, a woman whose son was given up for adoption when she was a young girl fifty years earlier.
I did not abandon my child."
My quick reaction to the trailer...
Yes - Dench doesn't carry films as often as we'd like so we're there. The tears will undoubtedly flow given that people struggling to reconcile their lives and lost children demand kleenex. Philomena's matter-of-fact loopiness (the portion control joke, her "Ann Boleyn" comment) might provide good laughs.
No - The trailer suggests that we are as interested in Steve Coogan's career trouble journey as in her life.

Stephen Frears, the Oscar-nominated director behind one of my favourite films of all time*, returns behind the camera this year to reunite with Judi Dench for the bittersweet comedy, Philomena.
Due to be released towards the end of the year, the film stars Dench in the titular role, with Steve Coogan starring opposite as Martin Sixsmith, a journalist who helps Dench track down her long-lost son. With its release inching closer on the horizon, we’ve now got our first look at the leading duo, and here’s to hoping that the trailer will be following shortly.
Philomena is the true story of one mother’s search for her lost son.
Falling pregnant as a teenager in Ireland in 1952, Philomena was sent to the convent of Roscrea to be looked after as a “fallen woman”. When her baby was only a toddler, he was taken away by the nuns for adoption in America.

Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts in August: Osage County: Duel of the Oscar winners [See previous post: "Oscar 2014 Watch: Harvey Weinstein Cannes Film Festival Coming Attractions."] More Oscar 2014 bait: August: Osage County, directed by John Wells, and starring three-time Oscar winner Meryl Streep (Kramer vs. Kramer, Sophie’s Choice, The Iron Lady) and Oscar winner Julia Roberts (Erin Brockovich). Is it mere coincidence that Streep’s seventeenth Oscar nomination and third win was for her portrayal of British prime minister Margaret Thatcher in Phyllida Lloyd’s The Iron Lady — distributed by The Weinstein Company two years ago? Either way, Streep’s Oscar 2014 competition should be fierce, as Julia Roberts doesn’t seem to be wearing any makeup in the family drama. (Photo: Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts in August: Osage County.) Adapted by Tracy Letts from his own play, besides Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts, August: Osage County also features Oscar nominee Juliette Lewis (Cape Fear), Dermot Mulroney, Star Trek Into Darkness‘ Benedict Cumberbatch,...

The relationship between Harvey Weinstein and British filmmaker Stephen Frears is one that has proved very fruitful with Miramax releasing Frears' Dirty Pretty Things and the Oscar-winning The Queen , starring Helen Mirren, but more significantly, Frears' Mrs. Henderson Presents , starring Dame Judi Dench, was one of the very early releases for the fledgling The Weinstein Company back in 2005 when the Weinsteins broke off with Disney. The Weinstein Company is keeping that relationship alive as it's being reported out of Cannes that they've picked up the distribution rights for Frears' latest, Philomena , which reunites him with Dench, for a reported $6 million. Based on the real story from BBC correspondent Martin Sixsmith's 2009 book "The Lost Child of Philomena...

This biopic of Paul Raymond has about as much depth as a 1970s British sex comedy
Scripted by Matt Greenhalgh (who wrote the screenplays for the ambitious biopics of Ian Curtis and John Lennon, Control and Nowhere Boy), The Look of Love is a disappointingly crude and shallow biography of the self-made northern impresario Paul Raymond, who started out conducting a music hall mind-reading act and finished up as a multi-millionaire nightclub proprietor, pornographer, owner of much of Soho, and for a while the richest man in Britain. The film reunites Michael Winterbottom, director of 24 Hour Party People, and its star Steve Coogan, but whereas that wonderful portrait of the ebullient Tony Wilson and the vibrant Manchester music scene was a piece of imaginative social history, The Look of Love has about as much depth and style as a cheap British sex comedy like Can You Keep It Up for a Week?...

Sure battlefields hold plenty of action, but many of the stories of war happen far from the frontlines. The historical drama Bomb Girls may not be set in a World War II combat zone, but it is undoubtedly a story of struggle and the public and private battles that Allied women and men (though, mostly women) dealt with during the war years.
With the second season of the Reelz original series premiering next week, we thought we’d take a look at some of our favorite movies that may not take place on a beachhead or depict the gruesome atrocities of war, but are still 1940s wartime stories, nonetheless. These movies aren't the typical tales from the war, but then not every war story needs to be profoundly tragic.
