Last month Eddie Marsan faced a happy dilemma: two high-profile projects in which he co-stars –Apple TV+ series “Franklin” led by Michael Douglas and Sam Taylor Johnson’s highly-anticipated Amy Winehouse biopic “Back to Black” – were both being released on the same day, April 12, in Marsan’s native U.K. (“Back to Black came out in the U.S. on May 17).
The resulting publicity maelstrom was, Marsan says, “intense.” And yet despite that, the actor – who has starred in over 150 screen projects including “Ray Donovan,” “Deadpool 2” and Guy Ritchie’s “Sherlock Holmes,” can truthfully claim to be “not really that famous.”
Partly that’s because his highest profile roles in the U.S. have seen the East London-born actor putting on an American accent, including in “Franklin,” in which he plays the second U.S. President, John Adams. Marsan has a long history with the character, having once been...

Michael Douglas is in terrific form as Benjamin Franklin in Apple TV’s new historical limited series “Franklin” but he isn’t the only actor to emerge with awards whispers whizzing through the air. Veteran actor Eddie Marsan features in a key supporting role as John Adams and delivers one of the finest performances of his career while also shining a new light onto a man that many actors have depicted before.
The limited series follows Franklin’s eight years in France as he tried to persuade King Louis XVI (Tom Pezier) to join the colonies’ cause and aid them in the American Revolutionary War. The scenes between Douglas and Marsan are nothing short of spectacular and Marsan nails his performance as Adams, as noted by critics.
Clint Worthington (Roger Ebert) noted: “Marsan’s energy as Adams is decidedly different from Paul Giamatti’s in Ellis’ original 2008 miniseries—“Franklin” feels...

Apple TV+ is sure to perform well at this year’s Emmys with a number of shows strongly positioned including “Lessons in Chemistry,” “Sugar,” “Manhunt,” “The New Look,” and “Masters of the Air.” Well, add in another limited series to that mix — the historical drama “Franklin,” starring Oscar-winner Michael Douglas as the titular Benjamin Franklin.
The show chronicles Franklin’s eight years in France, wherein he attempted to convince King Louis XVI (Tom Pezier) to support the colonies in the American Revolutionary War. The series, as you’d expect, features fabulous costumes, sets, and hair and makeup. It is anchored by a powerhouse performance from Douglas, whose take on Franklin is a more modern one. The show is all the more entertaining for it, as noted by critics.
Michael Starr (New York Post) stated: “My advice is to sit back and enjoy Douglas as he admirably chews the scenery and...

Tobias Menzies has become one of our most reliably excellent actors of late. Classically trained, he had an extensive theatre career in his native England during the noughties and early 2010s before he rose to prominence with roles in “Game of Thrones” and “Outlander.”
Menzies’ profile then increased further thanks to his lauded portrayal of Prince Phillip in “The Crown” and his stock has again risen thanks to his role as another major historical figure in Apple TV’s “Manhunt.” The acclaimed limited series follows the death of President Abraham Lincoln (played by Hamish Linklater) and the subsequent 12-day manhunt for assassin John Wilkes Booth (Anthony Boyle).
Menzies stars as Edwin Stanton, the Secretary of State and personal friend of Lincoln who headed up the hunt for Booth. Menzies proves himself capable of carrying this compelling show entirely on his own. His complex, gruff portrayal of Stanton is what makes the series soar,...

As the Marvel Cinematic Universe established a stronghold over pop culture in the 2010s, taking on comic book roles became a lucrative trend for actors of all ages. But after the overwhelming success of “Avengers: Endgame,” esteemed thespians who joined superhero franchises often found themselves chasing another milestone: A dramatic death scene.
Michael Douglas has made no secret of the fact that he hopes his “Ant-Man” character Hank Pym receives an on-screen death sequence. While promoting the most recent franchise entry “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” the actor quipped that he would only return for a fourth film “as long as I can die.” But as it turns out, he privately lobbied for a death scene even earlier than that.
In a recent appearance on “The View” (via Entertainment Weekly), Douglas revealed that he requested to have his character killed off in “Quantumania.” While Kevin Feige and company didn’t ultimately honor his wishes,...

Two of America’s founding fathers are fed up. Aside from their shared belief in a bold new experiment called the United States, Benjamin Franklin (Michael Douglas) and John Adams (Eddie Marsan) don’t often see eye to eye, and their conflicting visions have only strayed further during negotiations with France. Adams doesn’t see the point in spending so much time catering to one European king while they’re trying to assert their independence from another. Franklin knows the path to freedom comes with tolls that only the French can pay. But more to the point, he knows the French. He knows their customs, their language, and their comportment. Adams’ attempts to speak French are almost as disastrous as his impatience with their languid dealmaking, and after an unnecessary setback, his co-emissary tries to warn him.

A jam-packed weekend of last-gasp Oscar campaigning — the film Academy’s final round of voting opened on Feb. 22 and will close on Feb. 27 — kicked off on Saturday night with the 30th SAG Awards, the first major awards show ever to be streamed on Netflix. But do Saturday night’s results actually provide reliable clues about what will happen two weeks from Sunday night at the 96th Oscars?
I would argue that they probably do.
SAG Award winners are determined by the roughly 160,000 members of SAG-AFTRA, the world’s largest union of actors, whereas Oscar winners are determined by the roughly 9,500 voting members of the film Academy, 86 percent of whom are not actors, which would suggest that any overlap is purely coincidental.
But it is quite a statement that SAG-AFTRA members voted best actor in a film — which has long looked to be neck-and-neck between Cillian Murphy for Oppenheimer over Paul Giamatti...

After winning best actor in a musical or comedy at Sunday Night’s Golden Globes, Paul Giamatti wanted to make sure that the profession that he portrays in his film The Holdovers was not forgotten
“It’s a movie about a teacher, I play a teacher and I come from a whole family of teachers and teachers are good people and you gotta respect them, this is for teachers as well,” Giamatti said.
Giamatti also had fun with the audience about how his knees were sore from all the standing and sitting adding that his chances of landing a role in a future John Wick film were slim.

Paul Giamatti has won the Best Actor in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy Golden Globe for “The Holdovers.”
The acclaimed Alexander Payne film featured some of Giamatti’s best-ever work, which is saying something, given that his previous team-up with Payne on “Sideways” is considered one of the best performances of the century to date. But his Paul Hunham, an irascible Western Civilization teacher whose life is in thrall to antiquity, captured the hearts of viewers and Globe voters. The film, set at a New England boarding school in 1970, actually felt like one of the New Hollywood classics Payne was obviously aspiring for it to be.
This is Giamatti’s third Golden Globe win after picking up trophies for “John Adams” and “Barney’s Version.” In addition to his three Golden Globe wins, he also has been nominated three other times, for “Sideways,” “Cinderella Man,” and “Too Big to Fail.

The Palm Springs Film Awards will honor Paul Giamatti with the Icon Award for his performance in “The Holdovers.” He will receive the award at the Jan. 4 event at the Palm Springs Convention Center.
“In ‘The Holdovers,’ Paul Giamatti inhabits a complex character who is both challenging and rewarding, and ultimately reminds us of what it means to be connected as human beings,” festival chairman Nachhattar Singh Chandi said in a statement. “For his storied career of quintessential cinematic roles, it is our honor to present the Icon Award to Paul Giamatti for this career-best performance.”
In Alexander Payne’s “The Holdovers,” Giamatti portrays a grumpy New England prep school teacher who forms a bond with a troubled student and the school’s head cook, who is grieving after the loss of her son. Giamatti currently stars in Season 2 of “30 Coins” and the final season of “Billions.” His other...

Paul Giamatti talks about finding the heart in the protagonist of Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers.
He is rightly known for his versatility, but Paul Giamatti has a special knack for principled, witty curmudgeons. “It seems to come to me,” he says of the personality type, “and it is hard for me to know whether I manifest it for myself or it’s something people have seen me do. Nate Bargatze was an unconventional choice to host the Halloween 2023 episode of “Saturday Night Live.” But hey, the actors were still on strike, the talented comic’s standup career is taking off, and somebody had to don the George Washington wig.
The result was “Washington’s Dream,” written by SNL co-head writer Streeter Seidell and Mikey Day with an assist from Auguste White, and starring Bargatze as Washington and Day, James Austin Johnson, Bowen Yang, and Kenan Thompson as his dejected Revolutionary War soldiers. Thompson had an especially good reason to be pessimistic about America’s future.
The setting: an American army camp. The year: 1777. Bargatze-as-Washington reminds his tired troops what they’re fighting for: the right to determine their new country’s own “system of weights and measures” — one that’s independent from the British Monarchy with the added benefit of being far more random and confusing. Given that it has been accomplished by eight performers, the feat of winning SAG Awards for two different limited series or TV movies isn’t as rare as it once was. Nonetheless, it remains an impressive achievement since no one has yet topped it, but that could change in a matter of months. Heading into the 30th SAG Awards ceremony, two-time Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actor victor Mark Ruffalo has a shot at snagging another trophy of the same kind, which would earn him the distinction of being either non-continuing program category’s first triple champion.
Ruffalo’s first two individual SAG Award wins came for his work in the HBO productions “The Normal Heart” (2015) and “I Know This Much Is True” (2021). In this case, he is seeking recognition as a star of the four-part Netflix adaptation of the heavily lauded novel “All the Light We Cannot See,” on...

Any new show by producer Frank Doelger – whose credits include “Game of Thrones,” “The Swarm,” “John Adams” and “Rome” – must rate as an event. That event takes place Oct. 17 at Cannes Mipcom trade fair, with the world premiere of “Concordia,” on which Doelger serves as executive producer and showrunner.
Produced by Intaglio Films, a joint venture of Zdf Studios and Beta Film, which share international distribution, “Concordia” is backed by a powerful partnership of Zdf, Mbc, France Télévisions and Hulu Japan. Shot in English, the six-part series is directed by Barbara Eder.
“Concordia” begins in classic Noir style cutting from a seeming suicide on a windswept moor to the discovery of a young man’s dead body, found beside a road just outside Sweden’s Concordia, a attempt to create a utopia powered by AI surveillance to ensure a fairer, more humane and safer society.

Among the dozen Emmy Awards “Game of Thrones” collected in 2019 for its final season was one for casting, which made it the first drama program to achieve a third victory in that category. Each time it was honored there, it also won Best Drama Series, setting a precedent that “Succession” could emulate this year after having taken both prizes in 2020 and 2022. Although it is heavily favored to clinch the top honor again, its potential casting win might not come as easily or at all, given the remarkably stiff competition it faces from “The White Lotus.”
After winning 10 Emmys in 2022 while classified as a limited series, “The White Lotus” is now competing in seven specific drama series categories, including casting. Its genre shift was triggered by its second season’s incorporation of previously established characters. As it goes against “Succession” in this race, it will also have to fend off two-time winner “The Crown,...

According to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users, Evan Peters is the front-runner to win the Emmy for Best Movie/Limited Actor for “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” with 71/20 odds as of this writing. However, “Beef” is currently predicted to win at least four awards (including Best Limited Series). With that in mind, could “Beef” star Steven Yeun upset Peters?
At the winter awards earlier this year, Peters won the Golden Globe for Best Movie/Limited Actor. Yet he ended up losing the SAG Award to Sam Elliott for “1883,” which was eligible at last year’s Emmys where Elliott wasn’t even among the nominees for Best Movie/Limited Actor. If Evan Peters couldn’t win at SAG, which is a very populist awards group, then that may not bode well for him at the Emmys.

In the fall of 2021, Olivia Colman scored her first career Emmy for “The Crown” despite not having succeeded on her Oscar bid for “The Father” that spring. This made her the 16th performer to prevail at the Emmys directly after going home empty-handed at the Oscars and the fourth to do so during the 21st century. Now that the 2023 Emmy nominations ballots have been released, eight of the 16 actors who lost Oscars at the most recent ceremony officially have shots at joining Colman on this list.
Gold Derby’s Emmy odds currently indicate that the man and woman with the best hopes of following in Colman’s footsteps are Brian Tyree Henry and Hong Chau, who just received their first career Academy Award nominations for their respective supporting turns in “Causeway” and “The Whale.” Henry is seeking his second comedy supporting Emmy notice for “Atlanta,” while Chau could pull double...

Presidents of the United States (both sitting and former) have won. So have former Beatles. And a First Lady. And a lot of other unlikely movie types. The truth is, with so many Primetime Emmy Awards handed out – well over 100 annually – it’s easy for some intriguing victors in both the deeper past and more recently to slip through the cracks.
So as a public service, here are a few dozen-plus Emmy winners you may have missed.
Barack Obama – Yes, our 44th President took home an Emmy trophy in 2022 as best narrator for an episode of the doc series “Our Great National Parks.” He thus became the second President to be so honored. To find out the first, see below. Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr – It may have escaped your gaze, but the former Beatles won an Emmy last year for top documentary/nonfiction series (shared with Peter Jackson and...

In the 29-year existence of the Screen Actors Guild Awards, a total of 15 pairs and one trio of cast mates have directly challenged each other for the Best TV Movie/Miniseries Actor prize, with the latest dual nominees being Taron Egerton and Paul Walter Hauser of “Black Bird.” These instances have resulted in eight wins, which is a far higher amount than in any of the other five solo TV categories. The first to triumph in one of these situations was Jack Lemmon, while the most recent was Michael Douglas.
Lemmon, who had previously gone up against his “12 Angry Men” costar George C. Scott, is one of five men who has been involved in more than one of this category’s cast mate showdowns. As the first member of said group, he has since been followed by Al Pacino, Paul Giamatti, Ed Harris, and John Turturro.

SAG Awards nominee profile: Taron Egerton (‘Black Bird’) would be third youngest male TV winner ever
Just last year, Michael Keaton’s Screen Actors Guild Award victory for “Dopesick” made him the fifth man to win the organization’s Best TV Movie/Miniseries Actor prize after losing on his first lead film bid (for 2014’s “Birdman”). Now, since Taron Egerton has earned guild recognition for Apple TV+’s “Black Bird” after coming up short on his nomination for the 2019 film “Rocketman,” the group is already on the verge of gaining its sixth member. If he triumphs on this outing, the 33-year-old will also follow comedy champ Sean Hayes and limited series victor Darren Criss as the third youngest man to ever win an individual SAG Award for TV acting.
The four actors who preceded Keaton in eventually spinning their initial lead film losses into TV movie or miniseries wins were Paul Newman, Kevin Kline, Paul Giamatti and Bryan Cranston. Keaton and Giamatti stand apart from the...

Berlinale Series, established in 2015, keeps offering new shows proper cinema treatment. But it’s not just about that “dark room and the level of concentration you hardly get when you sit on a sofa,” explains head of the event Julia Fidel, noting a surge in stories with a “reasonable” budget.

When Frank Doelger, a six-time Emmy award-winning showrunner, whose credits include “Game of Thrones,” “John Adams” and “Rome,” was preparing to adapt Frank Schätzing’s 900-page novel “The Swarm” into an eight-part eco-thriller, he resolved to place it in a different genre. Whereas the novel read like a “disaster movie,” Doelger wanted the series to be a “monster movie” — but with a twist, the monster was us.
In the first few episodes of the show, which premieres at the Berlin Film Festival on Sunday, seemingly random, unconnected events occur in different parts of the world in which marine creatures start behaving in abnormal ways that threaten the lives of those who come in contact with them. After each event, scientists are given the task of finding the cause of the change in behavior, and they slowly start to wonder whether the events are connected, and ask what is triggering them.

Even after two Critics Choice, two Golden Globe, three Emmy and three individual Screen Actors Guild Award nominations, Laura Linney‘s ledger remains empty when it comes to hardware for her turn as Wendy Byrde on “Ozark.” The actor is long overdue for recognition of her work on the Netflix series and only has one more chance to attain it: at the 29th SAG Awards, where she is up for Best TV Drama Actress for its fourth and final installment.
Also shortlisted alongside her “Ozark” cast members this year, Linney now has 11 career SAG Awards nominations under her belt. She landed her first three on the film side, earning solo recognition for her performances in “You Can Count on Me” (2000) and “Kinsey” (2004), as well as an ensemble bid for “Mystic River” (2003). SAG Awards nominee profile: Julia Garner (‘Ozark’) looks to pocket first statuette after 3 Emmy wins
Ruth Langmore might not know sh*t about f*ck, but her portrayer, Julia Garner, definitely knows a thing or two about winning awards. The 29-year-old performer nabbed three Best Drama Supporting Actress Emmys for her performance on “Ozark,” tying Ellen Corby as the second most-rewarded actor in the category, and just pocketed her career-first Golden Globe Award for the Netflix series last month. Now, she can replicate that success at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, where she is nominated for Best TV Drama Actress for the third time in a row and looking to score her inaugural victory.
This is the sixth nomination for “Ozark” and seventh overall for the actor at the guild. Like the previous two times she was cited individually for the crime series — for its second and third seasons in 2019 and 2021, respectively — her solo recognition this year, for its fourth and final installment, comes with...

When Gillian Anderson was honored by the Screen Actors Guild two years ago for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher on “The Crown,” the Netflix series became the first to ever produce three different solo SAG Award winners. Now, this trio – which includes Claire Foy (as Queen Elizabeth II) and John Lithgow (as Winston Churchill) – could grow into a quartet if Elizabeth Debicki is lauded for her fifth season performance as Princess Diana. This would also make “The Crown” the first show to produce three different recipients of the guild’s Best TV Drama Actress prize.
As a concurrent drama ensemble nominee, Debicki faces double challenges from Jennifer Coolidge (“The White Lotus”) and “Ozark” pair Julia Garner and Laura Linney. This marks Garner and Linney’s third drama actress face-off following their joint losses to Sandra Oh (“Killing Eve”) in 2019 and Anderson in 2021. As the star of “Inventing Anna,” Garner is...

Two decades after he initially became a Screen Actors Guild Award nominee and 13 years after he won Best Film Actor for “Crazy Heart,” Jeff Bridges has received his first television acting notice from the organization. This Best TV Drama Actor recognition comes for his work on FX’s “The Old Man,” which constitutes the first regular small screen role of his 65-year career. If he succeeds on this bid, he will be only the sixth man to win individual SAG Awards for both film and TV performances.
Aside from his win, Bridges’ SAG Awards resume consists of four film nominations for “The Contender” (supporting), “Seabiscuit” (ensemble), “True Grit” (lead) and “Hell or High Water” (supporting). Over the course of a dozen years, Andrew Garfield has collected four Golden Globe nominations in as many different categories. Immediately after taking the 2022 Best Film Comedy/Musical Actor prize for “tick, tick… Boom!” he is now up for Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actor as the star of Hulu’s “Under the Banner of Heaven.” Although many performers have been honored by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for both big and small screen work before, his inclusion on the list would be groundbreaking because he would be the first man to ever accomplish the feat within a one-year period.
“Under the Banner of Heaven” marks Garfield’s return to TV acting following his last appearance in all three parts of the 2009 British program “Red Riding.” The new series is based on Jon Krakauer’s nonfiction book of the same name, which delves into the Utah v. Lafferty double murder...

A dozen years ago, Laura Linney became the fifth of seven actresses to conquer two lead TV Golden Globe categories by winning Best Comedy Actress for “The Big C” two years after being honored for her work on the limited series “John Adams.” Following her unsuccessful Best Drama Actress bid for Netflix’s “Ozark” in 2021, she now has a second chance to blaze a trail as the first winner of all three Golden Globe awards available to lead TV actresses. Since her show has come to an end and she is up against a slate of category newcomers, she should now stand a better chance of standing out to voters and achieving this impressive feat.
Linney came up short in 2021’s drama actress race against “The Crown” star Emma Corrin, who has passed her role of Princess Diana on to current supporting nominee Elizabeth Debicki. Her other three former challengers...

After reaping Best TV Drama Actress nominations for each of “Ozark’s” first three seasons but failing to parlay any into gold, Laura Linney has one last chance to reign victorious for the Netflix show at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. Should she triumph for its fourth and final installment in February, she would be just the fourth person to take home their maiden solo victory for their show’s final season, after Catherine O’Hara (“Schitt’s Creek”), Peter Dinklage (“Game of Thrones”) and Phoebe Waller-Bridge (“Fleabag”).
While O’Hara and Waller-Bridge had to wait until their last seasons to be rewarded — both in the Best TV Comedy Actress category — their cases are different from Linney’s. O’Hara had been nominated only once before for “Schitt’s Creek” when she finally took home her inaugural statuette for the Canadian sitcom, for its sixth installment, in 2021. Waller-Bridge, meanwhile, prevailed on her very...
