The creator of Netflix's The Toys That Made Us takes us through the five-year process to get his passion project made.
This guest column comes from Brian Volk-Weiss, creator and executive producer of Netflix's The Toys That Made Us.
In 2011, I was in a Borders bookstore when the initial kernel of the idea that would become The Toys That Made Us hit me like a ton of Energon Cubes; why were there so many books about the War of 1812 and zero about the origin of Transformers? Or G.I. Joe? Or He-Man? The War of 1812’s importance notwithstanding, how was it possible that hundreds of millions of people knew the names Optimus Prime and Snake Eyes, had their youths shaped by those characters, and yet not one book out of the thousands that were on display could be purchased and taken home to learn about their origins?...

President Donald Trump’s preferred news program “Fox & Friends” equated Confederate statues to the 9/11 memorials on Monday, the 16th anniversary of the terror attacks. For Monday’s show, “Fox & Friends” invited Donald Trump’s secretary of the interior Ryan Zinke on to talk about his visit to Pennsylvania to commemorate 9/11. Zinke is visiting the Quaker State to see the Shanksville memorial to the innocent victims on United Flight 93 who thwarted another attack on Washington, D.C. The passengers’ actions “is an example of America sticking together,” Zinke said. He described the memorial as “magnificently designed and magnificently done — an.

The latter was itself detailed in Paul Greengrass’ 2006 film United 93. Paul Greengrass of United 93 and Bourne fame will make a Netflix film about a right-wing Christian terrorist attack in Norway.
Netflix is becoming brazen about their business model for releasing original films. While they have had some gems in the past like Beasts Of No Nation and Barry, this summer had their first bonafide hit: the wonderful Okja. And with Will Smith and David Ayer’s Bright just around the corner, their talk about making the theatrical model obsolete is emboldened with yet another filmmaker joining Ayer, Martin Scorsese, and other heavy hitters on the small screen.
Thus enter Deadline announcing Monday afternoon that Paul Greengrass of the Bourne movies and United 93 is making his next true story drama about terrorism for the streaming giant. In an unnamed film, Greengrass will give a dramatic account of the far-right Norwegian terrorist Andres Behring Breivik, who in...

It comes as no surprise that some of our most heinous historical world events have become the subject of a cinematic depiction. As audiences wanting their thirst for great cinema and intrigue in world issues grow we have had, in the naughties alone, Roman Polanski deliver The Pianist in 2002 and more recently László Nemes’ Son of Saul to quench our desire. Even this week, we have the release of Terry George’s The Promise which tells the story of the Armenian Genocide in the final years of the Ottoman Empire with Oscar Isaac, Charlotte LeBon and Christian Bale hitting our cinemas.
Whether these events are genocides, horrific murders, acts of terrorism or even demonic paranormal activities, our quest for knowledge, understanding and feeling has inspired filmmakers for years. Their films set out to shine a light on the atrocities and suffering of man, and act to empower...

One of the most audacious cons in history is aided by the certainty that no one would tell a lie so obvious.
A film about an outrageous hoax, based on a true story as told in a book written by the perpetrator of said hoax. With so many layers of reality between the actual events and their onscreen translation, should we assume everything in 2007’s The Hoax is accurate?
Perhaps the more important question is: does it matter?
My feeling is that a film’s first prerogative is to entertain. In any adaptation (whether from real life or another medium of fiction) concessions will be made to the necessity of visual drama. When real life is the model, I’m less concerned with accuracy so long as the film is never presented as evidence of the real events. (In other words, JFK is great drama. You can say it’s a great movie, but...

But, like so many other off-duty firefighters that day, he rushed in to help. All 11 of Sullivan's on-duty buddies riding on the Rescue 5 rig that day perished after being last seen driving into the smoke and fire that engulfed the area. 13 years. It feels like a lifetime ago, yet the profound impact of 9/11 still blows us away like it was yesterday.
On September 10, 2001, thousands of families went to bed quietly. Little did they know that would be the last night they slept with loved ones. At 8.46am the following morning, 19 members of the Islamic terrorist group al-Qaeda hijacked four commercial airlines and flew them into the World Trade Center, crashed Flight 93 in Pennsylvania and struck the side of the Pentagon. Almost 3000 in New York City died on impact.
On that day, the world changed. Many more Americans died in the War on Terror that followed 9/11, and the heroes and victims of the attacks will be honourably remembered in hearts across the globe. People like the passengers of Flight 93, who intervened with hijackers to bring down the plane before terrorists crashed it into what...

Non-Stop
Written by John W. Richardson, Chris Roach, and Ryan Engle
Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra
USA, 2014
Liam Neeson’s face has become a world-weary, pock-marked road map over the years, detailing a wholesome leading man’s travails into cinematic battle. In the last 6 years, he’s revitalized himself as a no-nonsense action hero, an unstoppably tough Good Guy With A Dark Past, starting with the outrageous Taken all the way up to his new film, Non-Stop. Gone is the soulful dramatic lead of the early 1990s; in his place is a take-no-guff sort who better like you or else he’ll probably put a choke hold on you in about eight seconds. (His recent detour into voiceover work, in The Lego Movie, was a pitch-perfect parody of the stereotype he’s otherwise embodied in his recent films.) Non-Stop is, as would be expected, an enormously silly film that either squanders...

In the beginning, three were created. Man made of clay. Angels made of light. And a third made of fire.
For centuries, stories of angels and men have captured the imagination and been etched into history crossing all boundaries of culture, religion and time. These two races have dominated the landscape of modern mythology, shrouding the evidence that a third was ever created. This third race, born of smokeless fire, was named the jinn. Modern man has all but forgotten this third race ever existed. It is time for him to remember.

There's no denying that Curse of Chucky (review) kicked a copious amount of ass, and now that the franchise is hotter than ever, word has come from franchise champion and Curse director Don Mancini that the evil little guy will indeed be back for round seven!
Our hope is that both Jennifer Tilly and Alex Vincent return with Fiona Dourif, who was incredible in the last feature.
Written and directed by Mancini, Curse of Chucky found a family imperiled by the murderous doll that launched a generation’s nightmares – determined to finish a job that was started long ago. The film stars Fiona Dourif (The Master, “True Blood”), A Martinez (“Longmire,” “General Hospital”), Danielle Bisutti (Get Smart, “CSI: Miami”) and Brennan Elliott (“Flight 93,” Double Jeopardy), with Brad Dourif (The Lord of the Rings) once again providing the voice of Chucky, the homicidal plaything inhabited by the spirit of notorious serial killer Charles Lee Ray.

That sound you heard at the end of this week’s Castle? That was a shared sigh of relief when we found out that Andrew Marlowe was done torturing us, at least for a while. Because this week was classic Castle.
Beckett may be out of work and out of sorts, but it seems to have had no effect on her relationship with Castle. “I don’t know what to do,” she laments. “ ”I’ve got some ideas,” Castle quips. Cute. Unemployed, she’s adrift. But as Castle begins to intimate,...

NBC is running the risk of losing out on one of TV’s best reality shows: the Republican presidential primary debates. The Gop’s debates of 2011-12 featured some of television’s most-talked-about moments, from Herman Cain’s 9-9-9 chorus to Rick Perry’s “Oops” moment to Mitt Romney’s $10,000 bet — and in 2015, there’s always the chance that Donald Trump could join the cast.
When NBC Entertainment announced in July that it was planning a 2014 miniseries about presumed presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, with Diane Lane playing the former first lady, there was an inevitable reaction from the Right.
