Mark Ruffalo gives what might just be the greatest performance of his career in "Poor Things." Yorgo Lanthimos' dark Victorian-era sci-fi comedy casts the notoriously loose-lipped Oscar nominee as the lawyer Duncan Wedderburn, an-out-and-proud cad who falls hard for Bella Baxter (Emma Stone), oblivious to the twisted truth behind the mysterious woman's eccentric nature. However, as Bella's mind rapidly evolves and she begins to lose interest in Duncan, his debonair facade swiftly melts away, revealing that he's really nothing more than an insecure, entitled clown who would sooner pull his hair out and pettily sabotage Bella's attempts to lead a happy life of her choosing than allow her to end their relationship.

cast and crew of “Poor Things” teased Mark Ruffalo about replacing him with Oscar Isaac — even bringing the other actor to set one day.
Despite having two Oscar nominations and starring in blockbusters such as “Avengers: Endgame,” Ruffalo sometimes grapples with imposter syndrome. The actor admitted this during a recent conversation with his “Poor Things” peers — director Yorgos Lanthimos, writer Tony McNamara and fellow cast members Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe and Ramy Yousef.
Ruffalo was offered the role of rakish attorney Duncan Wedderburn and recalled how he was sent the script. “I thought it was pretty amazing,” he noted. “But I doubted my ability to do it, to be honest with you. I was scared of it. Even to...

Mark Ruffalo recalled the moment he accidentally popped Channing Tatum‘s eardrum while they were filming 2014’s Foxcatcher.
The Poor Things actor appeared on the latest episode of Hot Ones, where he told host Sean Evans that the Magic Mike star “did ask me to slap the shit out of him.”
Ruffalo quipped that “it was easy to do because he’d beaten the shit out of me so many times” since the co-stars had “like four months of wrestling, of learning how to wrestle together” for the film.
The Bennett Miller-directed film explores the real-life story of wealthy heir John du Pont, who murdered U.S. Olympic wrestler Dave Schultz in 1996. Tatum and Ruffalo play brothers Mark and David Schultz, respectively, while Steve Carell plays John du Pont.
Ruffalo explained that Tatum had “30 pounds on me so when it came time to smack the shit out of him,...

Mark Ruffalo appeared on “Hot Ones” ahead of the release of “Poor Things” and got asked about the time he accidentally popped Channing Tatum’s eardrum on the set of “Foxcatcher.” The 2014 sports drama, directed by Bennett Miller, starred the two actors as Olympic wrestlers Mark and David Schultz. Ruffalo played David, who was murdered in January 1996 by multimillionaire John du Pont (played by Steve Carell in the film) after John recruited the brothers to help train them.
“[Channing] did ask me to slap the shit out of him, and it was easy to do because he’d beaten the shit out of me so many times,” Ruffalo wisecracked when the topic of Tatum’s popped eardrum was brought up.
“It was like four months of learning how to wrestle together,” Ruffalo added. “He like has 30 pounds on me, so when it came time to smack the shit out of him,...

Ari Aster's 2018 film "Hereditary" contains a great deal of shadow-lurking, a scene of spontaneous human combustion, several decapitations, allusions to demonic powers, and at least one Satanic cult. However, if one were to ask a "Hereditary" fan about the film, they would mention Toni Collette's amazing performance before any of the above elements. They will also likely recall the scenes of sheer panic, the harrowing sense of guilt, and the unnerving presence of actor Milly Shapiro as the scary young Charlie. This is, of course, the way Aster wanted it. "Hereditary" may have supernatural elements, but it is, first and foremost, a story about the breakdown of the family unit. It's about intergenerational trauma and how our most grievous pains are handed directly to us by our mothers. It's a nightmare, but more in the Freudian sense.

Writer/director Terry George’s new film, The Promise, arrives on UK shores this weekend amidst some resistance: the event it chronicles, the genocide of 1.5million Armenians from 1915, was one of the first modern genocides and has historically been surrounded in controversy. So much so that after the film was shown at last year’s Toronto Film Festival, IMDb registered over 57,000 one-star votes, which some commentators said was a campaign to downrate it by deniers of the genocide.
But none of that has derailed those involved in the film, particularly George, who says that the story was an important one that needed to be told, particularly as many modern audiences know little to nothing about the event. On the historical relevance, George told us:
“The fact that you don’t know much about the history speaks to the success of the Turkish governments who have repressed this...

The Toronto International Film Festival kicks off this week, and with it, the rest of a very busy fall festival season. In preparation for the Canadian festival, we’ll be rolling out a series of previews to point you in the direction of all the movies you have to see (or at least, all the movies you have to start anticipating right now). Next up, a batch of new features we’ve yet to see…and can’t wait to check out in the coming days.
“The Promise”
Oscar-winning director Terry George has been Mia from the big screen since 2011’s “Stand Off” (a little-seen Brendan Fraser vehicle that’s hardly worth mentioning) and the awards conversation since 2004’s “Hotel Rwanda” (though his subsequent film, the 2007 Mark Ruffalo-starring “Reservation Road” got a little love), but he seems poised to be back in a big way, thanks to a sweeping...

There are, in every generation of filmmakers, certain archetypes that repeat themselves over and over. For example, every generation has its playful prankster, the talented visual artists who are delighted by their own ability to take beautiful pictures of horrible things. I’ll be the first to admit that I am drawn to filmmakers who use cinema as a way of pushing buttons, and I am a fan of the outrageous and the extreme. When I saw De Palma, the new documentary about Brian De Palma and his filmography, it sent me scrambling to watch a number of his older films again. They are so familiar at this point, so well-worn, that it surprised me to see how new they still feel when I took a step back. The next day, I went to a screening of the latest film from Nicolas Winding Refn, and the back-to-back timing of the two films made me laugh.

Chicago – The contemplation of beauty gets a little more truth in a new film by Nicolas Winding Refn (“Drive”) entitled “The Neon Demon.” It features Elle Fanning as Jesse, a naive girl who wants to break into the world of modeling, and does so in an unexpected way. The symbolic film has both strange drama and touches of horror.
Director Nicholas Winding Refn has been a known cinema force since his breakthrough with “Drive” in 2011. The Danish born filmmaker began his career in his native Denmark with the film (and subsequent trilogy) “Pusher” (1996). He built his reputation film-by-film, as the John Turturro starring “Fear X” (2003) next got him noticed. The Sundance Film Festival gave praise to “Bronson” (2008), nominating the film for the Grand Jury Prize. The breakthrough film “Drive” came three years later, and garnered two Oscar nominations. “The Neon Demon” is Refn’s tenth feature film.

He’s now adding Jean Reno and James Cromwell. The Hotel Rwanda/ Reservation Road director is calling the shots on this one, based on the script he wrote with Robin Swicord. The Promise is set in the dying days of the Ottoman Empire (the 1920s) and explores the relationships between three people: Michael (Isaac), a gifted medical student; Chris (Bale), a renowned American journalist working in Paris; and the beautiful and sophisticated Ana (Le Bon).Reno is aboard to play a French admiral who faces life-threatening danger and finds himself unable to act, while Cromwell will be an American ambassador who shows a heroic side when challenged. The cameras are rolling now in Spain and Portugal with George shooting through December.

New to Netflix in September are two kinds of undead: Season 5 of "The Walking Dead" and the revived-from-cancellation A&E series, "Longmire," which was saved by Netflix.
As far as movies, there's the restored version of the Oscar-winning 1962 epic "Lawrence of Arabia," Wes Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom," the first three "Rambo" films, the terrific "The Bank Job" with Jason Statham and "Mandela: The Long Walk to Freedom" with Idris Elba.
There are also period dramas you might have missed from last year with Jessica Chastain ("Miss Julie") and Mia Wasikowska ("Madame Bovary") and hey, "The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl!"

Although Christian Bale has had to put plans to star as Travis McGee in the adaptation of The Deep Blue Good-By on hold thanks to a torn knee ligament, he's still lining up other work for when he’s fully recovered. One such job is co-starring with Oscar Isaac in The Promise. Hotel Rwanda/ Reservation Road director Terry George is calling the shots on this one, based on the script he wrote with Robin Swicord. All being well – and assuming Bale doesn’t break a leg or something – George plans to have the cameras rolling...

It’s the rise of the machines as romantic dramedy, and the Singularity as romantic tragedy. It’s the nicest, gentlest sci-fi horror film ever. I’m “biast” (pro): love Spike Jonze’s movies
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
It’s a familiar story of self-discovery and romance. Theodore is a lonely writer who can’t come to terms with his divorce — he keeps putting off signing the papers — and he’s just not interested in dating again. And then he meets Samantha. Their relationship is strictly platonic at first, but she’s smart, funny, considerate, attuned to his needs… and he falls for her, hard. She has no physical presence, of course, just a sexy Scarlett Johansson voice emanating from the smartphone-slash-supercomputer he carries around (as everyone else does in Theodore’s near-future Los Angeles). Sure, she’s an AI,...

Exclusive: Conde Nast Entertainment Group, which launched under Dawn Ostroff to mine feature and TV properties from the archives of the publisher’s magazine stable, has unearthed two separate projects. Run by former Imagine and Fox Searchlight exec Jeremy Steckler, the feature division has set Fracture scribe Daniel Pyne to script The Camorra Never Sleeps, a drama about the notorious Naples-based criminal underworld that is based on the 2012 Vanity Fair article written by William Langewiesche. Conde Nast Entertainment Group has separately hired Reservation Road scribe John Burnham Schwartz to script a film based on The Horse Whisperer, a 2002 GQ article written by Robert Draper. The movie will certainly need a new title, but the article is based on the long-shot journey of Wesley Keith Ritchie, who went from a Kentucky prison inmate to being a horse rehabilitation specialist who found salvation through the broken down progeny of Triple Crown winner Affirmed.

These Sundance films keep raking it in. As Deadline revealed late Monday evening, Radius-twc spent a 7-figure sum for North American rights, for a multi-platform release in a deal brokered by Paradigm. Here’s the Content release: Sundance – Content is delighted to announce the acquisition of all international rights to Concussion. The controversial but beautiful film premiered last weekend at the Sundance Film Festival in the U.S. Dramatic section and has also been selected in Berlin’s Panorama, where it will screen next month. Directed and written by Stacie Passon, the cast includes breakout performances by Robin Weigert (The Sessions, Sons of Anarchy), Maggie Siff (Michael Clayton,...

After winning an Oscar for his short The Shore this year, Hotel Rwanda director Terry George is also finally returning to feature film territory after 2007′s Reservation Road. Premiering at Tribeca last month, Whole Lotta Sole sees the helmer switching to a more fun tone, with the story revolving around Brendan Fraser and a robbery in a Irish town. We were mixed on the film (full review here), complaining about his over-abundant subplots, but enjoying the overall light nature. The first trailer has arrived today and you can check it out below for the film also starring Colm Meaney, David O’Hara, Yaya DaCosta and Martin McCann.

Joel Edgerton is one of Hollywood’s rising stars and it doesn’t look like that rise is going to slow down. Edgerton, who starred in last year’s hit Warrior and if you care he played Uncle Owen in Episode One: The Phantom Menace, is taking on the dual role of writer and star for his upcoming thriller Felony.
Here is a synopsis of the film:
Driving home after a celebration drink with his team after the long waited bust of a major gang, a decorated police officer (Edgerton) runs a young cyclist off the road. As he gives CPR to the child, fellow officers arrive to take his statement. In a split second decision he tells them a lie about the accident which will change all their lives

New York – In both his own films and his collaborations with Jim Sheridan, screenwriter-turned-director Terry George has invariably been drawn to serious subject matter, covering the Troubles in Northern Ireland (In the Name of the Father, The Boxer), the corrosive aftermath of family tragedy (Reservation Road), and true stories of an Ira hunger striker (Some Mother’s Son) or heroism in the midst of genocide (Hotel Rwanda). He takes an abrupt turn toward the light in Whole Lotta Sole. The calculatedly charming crime comedy could use a tad more vitality in its central character, played by Brendan Fraser,

The title of "Whole Lotta Sole" is the kind of gratingly obnoxious flourish that makes you hate the movie immediately. First of all it sits in your mouth like a blob of half-chewed gummy bears; secondly, it sounds like a direct-to-video independent movie produced in the mid-'90s that the Weinsteins picked up on a whim; and thirdly its implied double meaning – it's the name of a fish market in the film but its phonetic weight means something too ("whole lot of soul") – is meant to deepen the movie but instead leaves you even more irritated. The movie is pretty much exactly like that – it tries to sugarcoat the British gangster movie (and we're using the "British" term pretty broadly; it's set in Belfast) and leaves you totally annoyed and unsatisfied.
"Whole Lotta Sole" is the kind of movie that revels in hanging out with eccentric ("quirky") characters in this Irish town.

After starring in J.J. Abrams‘ sci-fi thriller Super 8 this summer and Sofia Coppola‘s Somewhere last year, it seems that there isn’t much 13-year-old Elle Fanning can’t do. According to Deadline, Fanning will star in Sally Potter‘s latest project Bomb, along side Alessandro Nivola.
Fanning will play a teenage rebel who hopes to save the world from nuclear annihilation, but soon realizes that her family is the one that may end up exploding. Nivola will play her father, who is a charismatic writer in 1960′s London. After having an affair with her best friend, the two have a devastating fallout.
Taking into account her past films, like Somwhere and Reservation Road, Fanning is definitely a good fit for this angst-driven role. I’m intrigued by the casting of Nivola as well, but I think that the pair will work very well together for the dramatic narrative.

"If everything moves along and there's no major catastrophes, we're basically headed towards holograms. Why can't you have Hamlet in 3D who comes out to the audience and does 'To be or not to be?' I mean, they do in the theater. You have to think that way. Don't let the economics, and fashion, inhibit you if you're being creative."
That's Martin Scorsese, as quoted by Todd Gilchrist at the Playlist. As Steven Zeitchik also reports for the Los Angeles Times, the comments followed an enthusiastic endorsement of 3D, which in turn followed this weekend's Los Angeles premiere of Hugo, Scorsese's adaptation of Brian Selznick's novel The Invention of Hugo Cabret. HBO, in collaboration with De Niro's Tribeca Productions, has purchased the rights to the book 'Truth and Consequences: Inside the Life of the Madoff Family,' according to the UK Daily Mail. The biography, which will serve as the source material for the TV movie, was the basis for the Madoff family's recent '60 Minutes' interviews.
'Reservation Road' writer John Burnham Schwartz will write the screenplay, according to Deadline. The book 'The Wizard of Lies: Bernie Madoff and the Death of Trust,' will also be used to inform the project.

[1] Actors signing on to play real-life figures is nothing new, but casting, say, Jesse Eisenberg in the role of ordinary-looking dude Mark Zuckerberg is one thing. When the character in question is a larger-than-life icon whose unique looks and mannerisms are recognized all over the globe, that's something else entirely, whether it's Michael Douglas playing Liberace [2], Michelle Williams doing her best Marilyn Monroe [3] -- or Eric Bana rocking the King's pompadour. The Aussie actor has signed on to star as Elvis Presley in Elvis & Nixon, the directorial debut of Cary Elwes. Bana will also executive produce, through his shingle Pick Up Truck Pictures. Exclusive: HBO’s movie about Bernie Madoff starring Robert De Niro as the disgraced financier is gaining momentum with the hire of Reservation Road scribe John Burnham Schwartz to write the script. HBO started the process in May when it optioned Diane Henriques’ non-fiction book The Wizard Of Lies: Bernie Madoff And The Death Of Trust, which is recounting the life of the imprisoned swindler and the $65 billion Ponzi scheme he concocted, and began negotiations with De Niro to play the lead. Now the high-profile project is moving to the next stage with ICM-repped Schwartz set to write a script based on Henriques’ book and additional source material I heard HBO is in the process of acquiring.

Science fiction and horror combine in time for Halloween as Mimic: Special Edition, from superstar director Guillermo Del Toro, is released on Blu-ray for the first time on October 31st 2011, courtesy of Studiocanal.
