Jeremy Renner has tasted great success juggling between character-driven dramas and big studio blockbusters. Before his Avengers fame, the actor starred in many compelling drams like Dahmer, Neo Ned, 28 Weeks Later, and The Hurt Locker where he showed off his incredible acting chops. He went on to star in the MCU and the Mission Impossible franchise.

Nielsen, the long-time arbiter of ratings on traditional TV, is getting into the ad-supported streaming game.
The company has struck a deal with Lionsgate to provide measurement for the studio’s MovieSphere Fast channel. Both sides are touting the agreement as a first for a “major” Fast outlet as the free, ad-supported streaming market continues to grow.
“By bringing proven linear TV metrics to the Fast space, Nielsen is providing us with a valuable and innovative tool to benchmark performance, evaluate what’s working and respond quickly to our audiences,” said Jim Packer, president worldwide television distribution at Lionsgate. “This is potentially a very significant development where our team can leverage viewer reach, duration, frequency, concentration and other audience indicators to help us shape our branded, general entertainment channels to better return value for our partners.”

While filmmaking duo Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger — aka The Archers — may be best known for their extravagant color films like “The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp,” “A Matter of Life and Death,” “Black Narcissus,” and “The Red Shoes,” their underseen black-and-white, post-wwii potboiler “The Small Back Room” may be their most daring.

When the original Knives Out movie was released by Lionsgate in 2019, the whodunnit starring Daniel Craig as the southern P.E. Benoit Blanc, was either doomed to fail or become a smashing success. The latter happened, as the ensemble cast full of big names made Knives Out one of the best films of the year, ending up with numerous accolades and nominations, with many going so far as to claim that it had revived the whodunnit genre. The sequel, Glass Onion, was also well-received, but more because of its political and social messages than for the plot, which was more or less feeble and unworthy of the original. But, what is important is that Glass Onion also featured an ensemble cast, and it seems that the upcoming third movie, Wake Up Dead Man, will also follow in these footsteps.

The Captain (Hoa Xuande) is our guide through both Viet Thanh Nguyen’s novel and the HBO limited series version of “The Sympathizer,” but he is also a mystery — most especially to himself. A communist spy who is pulled irresistibly towards the height of Western decadence (Los Angeles in the late ’70s) and depravity (a film set in the late ’70s), the goal of the show is to mirror Nguyen’s prose and give the viewer a visceral sense of The Captain’s alienation.
While the flashiest choice “The Sympathizer” makes is Robert Downey Jr. playing all the significant Western figures who attempt to influence The Captain, there are also smaller, subtler tortures within the show’s imagery itself. The cinematography (by “Decision To Leave” maestro Kim Ji-yong and “The Hurt Locker” veteran Barry Ackroyd) continually puts pressure on The Captain through a sense of heat, sickly light, and eyes just beyond the frame.

Taylor Sheridanʼs curated storytelling has impacted the lives of audiences far and wide, but none have had the kind of cultural effect as Yellowstone and its spin-offs. However, Jeremy Rennerʼs Mayor of Kingstown might come a close second, considering the gruesome storyline that manages to strike a chord with the audience at a molecular level due to Rennerʼs personal and very real tragedy.

Netflix has tied up a deal in the $34M range for the John Lee Hancock-directed package Monsanto, we can reveal. The pic will star Glen Powell, Anthony Mackie and Oscar winner Laura Dern.
CAA Media Finance cut the presale after launching with Rocket Science last week. Netflix has been quieter at recent markets but is back at the table with the splashy deal.
This and Apple’s WW deal for Everest sherpa pic Tenzing are the two biggest deals to emerge from the Cannes market so far. The latter is understood to be in the $40M range.
Monsanto tells the true story of young, untried attorney Brent Wisner (Powell), who takes on a seemingly insurmountable case against the giant U.S. chemical company Monsanto on behalf of Dewayne “Lee” Johnson (Mackie) who used Monsanto’s best-known product Roundup, a wildly financially successful weed and grass pesticide killer, as part...

Iconic directors named David haven’t been having the best luck with the Netflix streaming service lately. David Lynch recently revealed that Snootworld, an animated movie he hopes to make, had been rejected by Netflix, and now David Cronenberg has said that his new film The Shrouds – which just made its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival (you can read some of the first reactions Here) – was originally intended to be a Netflix TV series, but the streamer dropped it after paying him to write the pilot episode.
During a press conference at Cannes, Cronenberg said (according to The Hollywood Reporter) that he “envisioned the story working well as a series. He flew to Los Angeles to speak with two Netflix execs who financed the writing of a first episode – which they loved. But after the second, they did not want to go any further.” Cronenberg went on to say,...

Kathryn Bigelow was set to direct Aurora for Netflix, but that film got scrapped: now, though, she’s got another one.
Since Dan Lin was appointed as Netflix’s new film boss, we’ve all been waiting to see what kind of movies would be getting the green light at the Silicon Valley streaming outfit.
As of today, we have the very beginnings of an answer. Along with Happy Gilmore 2 – a sequel to Adam Sandler’s beloved 1996 comedy – it has also been announced that Kathryn Bigelow will be directing an as yet untitled thriller for the company.
Not much in the way of news has been released about the project but thanks to The Hollywood Reporter we do know this: the film will be focused ‘on a group of White House officials scrambling to deal with an incoming missile attack on the U.S. Sources say the story will...

After years of resisting any shift into live sports, Netflix has finally punted and will now stream two NFL games on Christmas Day beginning this year.
It’s a major coup for Netflix, even if the games are on a Wednesday — so get ready for Tbd announcers to read a lot of “Wednesday” promos. Netflix will also get at least one game around the holidays for both 2025 and 2026. There’s no way around it now: Netflix has live sports.
Netflix would never put it this way, but the money the streamer is spending on these games is something it would’ve previously spent elsewhere, perhaps on say…a movie?
Spencer Wang, Netflix’s VP of finance, investor relations, and corporate development, said at the Moffett Nathanson conference this morning that Netflix is spending on the NFL package about what it costs the streamer to make a mid-budget movie. Wang added...

Netflix has teamed up with Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow for a harrowing ticking-clock thriller.
The streamer has greenlit a film centered on a group of White House officials scrambling to deal with an incoming missile attack on the U.S.
Sources say the story will be told in real time and that its tone harkens back to Bigelow’s foreboding 2012 hit Zero Dark Thirty, which chronicled the hunt for Osama bin Laden and the Navy Seal mission to kill the terror leader.
Netflix wouldn’t confirm any details about the project, merely announcing an untitled Bigalow movie at their upfront presentation to advertisers in New York City on Wednesday.
The film — along with a Happy Gilmore sequel announced today — is the first movie greenlit by the streamer’s new film division head Dan Lin. However, the film’s development began during the division’s previous regime led by Scott Stuber,...

Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow has set her next feature film at Netflix. The streamer confirmed the project during its upfront presentation to advertisers on Wednesday afternoon in New York.
No title or plot details were revealed. The project marks Bigelow’s first feature since the 2017 police brutality period film “Detroit,” which was produced and distributed by Annapurna Pictures. Though that feature received positive reviews, it failed to capture the awards and commercial success of the director’s previous two works: the controversial 2012 CIA manhunt thriller “Zero Dark Thirty” and the acclaimed 2009 Iraq war feature “The Hurt Locker,” which won six categories at the 2010 Academy Awards including best picture. For “Hurt Locker,” Bigelow became the first woman ever to win the Oscar for best director.

Exclusive: We can tell you that James Franco and Oscar winner Tommy Lee Jones are leading the action thriller The Razor’s Edge from producer Corey Large and filmmaker Demian Lichtenstein (3000 Miles to Graceland).
Red Sea Media is handling international sales and will debut the film for buyers at the upcoming Marche du Film in Cannes. Cameras roll June 25 in Georgia.
Lichenstein is helming off a screenplay he wrote with Vance Duplechin. After a mob hitman vows to leave his deadly past behind, he faces an impossible choice when his daughter is kidnapped and the woman he loves becomes a target of the syndicate. He is forced to undertake one final, perilous mission while being pursued by an assassin even more lethal.
Pic is executive produced by Kirk Shaw. BondIt Media Capital is financing with Matthew Helderman, Luke Taylor and Jordan Nott also executive producing.
“I’m excited that we have signed the superbly talented actors James, Suki and Tommy Lee to bring The Razor’s Edge to the big screen. They are perfectly suited to embody the protagonists in director Demian’s script,” said Large. “We cannot wait to begin filming this taut thriller next month with an assist from our seasoned executive producer Kirk,” he added.
“We’ve worked with Corey on over a dozen projects throughout the years and always appreciate his ability to get projects made in many different industry climates. We’re excited for another adventure here with Corey and his team,” commented Bond It Capital co-founder CEO Matthew Helderman.
Large is producing through his 308 Enterprises. His other feature production, Assassination directed by Rain Man Oscar winner Barry Levinson and starring Academy Award-winner Al Pacino and BAFTA winning Shia Labeouf is shooting this fall.
Franco was Oscar nominated for Best Actor for 127 Hours and is a 2x Golden Globe winner for James Dean, in which he played the title role, and took home Best Actor in Miniseries, and for The Disaster Artist which he won Best Actor Feature Comedy/Musical. He starred in Sony’s original Spider-Man trilogy from Sam Rami.
Oscar, Emmy, SAG, Golden Globe, and Palme d’Or winner Jones counts an Oscar and Golden Globe supporting actor win for The Fugitive and starred in Sony’s Men in Black trilogy. Jones won a Lead Actor Emmy for NBC’s The Executioners’ Song, and a Cannes Palme D’Or for Best Actor for Sony Pictures Classics’ The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada which he also directed. He also directed The Homesman which starred Hilary Swank.
Franco is represented by UTA and Anonymous Content, Jones is represented by CAA and Jacobson, Russell, Saltz, Nassim & De La Torre.

It was reported last month that Kathryn Bigelow had dropped out of directing an adaptation of the apocalyptic David Koepp novel “Aurora” for Netflix as new film chief Dan Lin was starting his role. But one of Lin’s first green lights will reportedly be a different Bigelow film with a similarly apocalyptic bent.
According to a report in Puck, “The Hurt Locker” director Bigelow has been tapped to direct a thriller about the White House’s real-time response efforts to an incoming ballistic missile attack on American soil. The script for the film is written by Noah Oppenheim, and the project is expected to be formally announced when Netflix hosts its Upfronts presentation to advertisers next week.

For those who remember, the game show Press Your Luck relied a lot on good timing. In a very roulette-like manner, contestants would watch squares on a board randomly be highlighted until they prompt it to stop in order to get the prize it halted on. An amazing episode in 1984 would have a contestant endlessly receiving good luck as he won big money every time he called, “Stop!” His fortune would be called into question as he would get accused of cheating on the show. Deadline has now shared the first look at Press Your Luck — a movie that will depict the events of that episode and all the controversy surrounding it, starring Paul Walter Hauser as the fateful contestant.
The synopsis, according to Deadline, reads,
“Set in 1984, the film follows Ohio resident Michael Larson, who steps on to the set of game show Press Your Luck harboring a secret:...

Rocket Science and CAA Media Finance are launching foreign sales out of Cannes for the John Lee Hancock directed Monsanto starring Glen Powell, Anthony Mackie and Oscar winner Laura Dern.
Monsanto tells the true story of young, untried attorney Brent Wisner (Powell) who takes on a seemingly insurmountable case against the giant U.S. chemical company Monsanto on behalf of Dewayne “Lee” Johnson (Mackie) who used Monsanto’s best-known product Roundup, a wildly financially successful weed and grass pesticide killer, as part of his job as a high school groundskeeper. During the trial, Dr Melinda Rogers (Dern), the chief toxicologist of the Monsanto Company, testifies with certainty that Roundup is safe.
Pic’s screenplay was developed in association with Karl Spoerri’s Zurich Avenue and penned by Michael Wisner, Alexandra Duparc, Ned Benson and Hancock. Producers are Moritz Borman, Eric Kopeloff, Philip Schulz-Deyle and Jon Levin alongside HyperObject Industries’ Adam McKay and Kevin Messick.

While there are many reasons why movies lose their appeal over the years, in some cases they deserve much more recognition. As the awards season passes and the hype around the release dies down, some of the most acclaimed films end up being forgotten by younger audiences.
When it comes to war movies, pretty much everyone can name Band of Brothers, Dunkirk, and Saving Private Ryan, but that doesn't even cover a quarter of the list of perfectly great examples of the genre. The Hurt Locker is one of those films that has been unfairly forgotten in recent years, even though it is still very relevant.

Robert Downey Jr. called it “mind-blowing” to see Jeremy Renner up on his feet and celebrating at Chris Evans’ wedding last September. The Captain America actor tied the knot with Alba Baptista in a private ceremony in Cape Cod, Mass., and was surrounded by his longtime Marvel co-stars. Renner was hospitalized at the start of 2023 with near-fatal injuries after his snow plow ran him over.
As part of Chris Hemsworth’s new Vanity Fair cover, some of Evans’ Marvel co-stars remembered attending the wedding and being so proud of Renner’s recovery. Hemsworth attended the nuptials with his mother, who Downey called “a complete hoot. There’s a lot of her in him.”

Jeremy Renner became the leading man in the TV series Mayor of Kingstown in 2021. The show is currently filming its third season, with the episodes set to premiere later this summer. After playing Hawkeye for the better part of a decade in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Jeremy Renner took a different approach to choosing his project, and ended up with Taylor Sheridan’s crime thriller.
Jeremy Renner as Mike McLusky in Mayor of Kingstown
Renner has been part of the film industry for many years, having worked on many acclaimed projects and even getting Oscar nominations for his movies like The Hurt Locker and The Town. While Steven Spielberg might hail superhero movies as Oscar-worthy, the likes of Martin Scorsese and Anthony Hopkins have gone on to criticize Marvel and DC flicks and even deemed them not cinema-worthy. Although each actor has a right to have their own opinions regarding different genres of cinema, fans have disliked how big names in Hollywood have time and again belittled superhero flicks and the actors who work in them.

Jeremy Renner has worked hard for some iconic movies in the early 2010s but his most iconic role was that of Hawkeye in the MCU. Portraying the superhero gave Renner his fame but it also kind of pigeon-holed him into a certain character.
When notable series creator Taylor Sheridan came up with a new series titled Mayor of Kingstown, Renner was considered for the lead role. The actor, however, revealed that he didn’t even read that much of the script and immediately said yes to Sheridan!

Under Netflix’s new head of film, auteur-driven projects are said to be very much out of favour: Kathryn Bigelow’s Aurora included.
Just a couple of weeks ago, we covered a report which suggested that Dan Lin, the new head of Netflix’s film division, would be looking to scale back the company’s commitment to high-budget films. Expensive movies like The Gray Man, Red Notice or Rebel Moon would be a thing of the past and the film division would instead focus its resources on mid-budget projects.
So far though, the only projects about that aren’t getting a green light seem to be the ones being led by auteur filmmakers.

Outside of his popularity in the MCU, Jeremy Renner has been a part of some excellent character-driven films that showed his range as an actor. He first gained significant praise early in his career playing serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer in the 2002 indie film Dahmer. He received further recognition for his incredible performances in The Town and The Hurt Locker.

We Oscarologists (ridiculous name) spend our time trying to read certain tea leaves to figure out what a potential Best Picture winner typically needs to win in order to take home the Oscars’ top prize. Best Director was once the most important category to excel in. Then it was Best Editing that we thought a Best Picture hopeful needed to check off. Then, recently, the combination of a writing Oscar and an acting win has proven to be a powerful one for eventual Best Picture winners. But what do the stats say? Well, we’ve combed through every Best Picture winner of this century and documented which other Oscars they won. We then tallied those figures up in this below handy chart:

“Oppenheimer” took home an impressive seven Academy Awards at Sunday’s Oscars, including the night’s top prize of Best Picture. The Universal movie also won Best Director for Christopher Nolan and Best Actor for Cillian Murphy amongst a number of other awards. That is one below the total of eight wins we predicted for the film as “The Zone of Interest” beat the movie to win Best Sound. However, seven is still a huge tally and places “Oppenheimer” amongst the Best Picture winners to take home the highest amount of Oscars this century. The 2024 Oscar nominees for Best Director are Jonathan Glazer (“The Zone of Interest”), Yorgos Lanthimos (“Poor Things”), Christopher Nolan (“Oppenheimer”), Martin Scorsese (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), and Justine Triet (“Anatomy of a Fall”). Our odds currently show that Nolan (3/1) is most likely to win, followed in order by Lanthimos (4/1), Glazer (9/2), Triet (9/2), and Scorsese (9/2).
Three of these five filmmakers have been nominated at least once before, with Scorsese standing out as the only previous victor in the group. Now on his 10th bid (only two behind category record holder William Wyler), he initially triumphed on his sixth for “The Departed” (2007), which is also the only Best Picture winner in his filmography. He earned his remaining notices for “Raging Bull” (1981), “The Last Temptation of Christ” (1989), “Goodfellas” (1991), “Gangs of New York” (2003), “The Aviator” (2005), “Hugo” (2012), “The Wolf of Wall Street” (2014), and “The Irishman” (2020).

Apple is doing something it almost never does: licensing existing content to bulk up its streaming service.
Apple TV+ — which, up until this point, has relied predominantly on original TV shows and movies to lure in new subscribers — has announced that, for a limited time, more than four dozen movies have been made available at no additional charge.

Apple TV+ has added more than 50 licensed movies included in the price of the subscription service — the streamer’s biggest collection of back-catalog studio content to date. But the third-party titles will only be available for a limited time.
Apple TV+’s lineup has mostly comprised original series, movies and specials commissioned for the platform (as well as a smattering of live MLB games). Now it has added a bouquet of older film favorites to the mix, including popular and award-winning movies like “Titanic,” “300,” “Argo,” “Black Hawk Down,” “The Bodyguard,” “Jurassic World,” “Gravity,” “Fast & Furious 6,” “Kill Bill” Volume 1 and 2, “Star Trek Into Darkness,” “The Wolf of Wall Street,” “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” “Mad Max: Fury Road,” the original 2004 “Mean Girls” and “Zoolander.”
The movies are listed in a new section on the service labeled “Great Movies on Apple TV+” — however, the service notes, these are available for a “limited time.

“Happy first day of voting,” a publicist told me over the phone late Thursday afternoon while still pitching last-minute interviews before final Oscar ballots are due back on Tuesday. I didn’t realize the first day of voting was becoming like a national holiday and cause for celebration, but after nine months of talking about these movies and this race in one form or another, it probably is just that. Let the fireworks begin!
Nebraska Is Watching You, Oscar
It is a presidential election year, so inevitably someone has taken a poll on the popularity of the Oscars vs. the national election by surveying every state (these people need to get a life). At any rate, as CasinoReviews.net points out in its poll “Scorsese vs. Nolan outshines Trump vs. Haley” that only 12 states have more enthusiasm for the elections...

The winners of the 77th annual BAFTA Awards were revealed on February 18, just four days before Oscar voters begin weighing in with their choices for the winners of the 96th annual Academy Awards. The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has approximately 10,000 voting members as does the motion picture academy.
The BAFTAs and Oscars have 19 categories in common. Last year, they agreed on just seven races, all of which were below-the line. The BAFTA Awards went all in on “All Quiet on the Western Front” awarding it a lucky seven wins including Best Picture and Best Director while the Academy Awards did the same for “Everything Everywhere All At Once.” And none of the four BAFTA acting winners took to the podium at the Oscars.
Conversely in 2022, the two academies aligned in 15 races. The exceptions were Best Picture (the Oscars went with the BAFTA-snubbed “Coda” while the Brits loved...

Although he has personally competed for the Best Picture Oscar as a qualifying producer of just four films, Martin Scorsese is responsible for directing 10 of the top Academy Award category’s nominees, including 2024 contender “Killers of the Flower Moon.” This recent improvement upon his total makes him only the third filmmaker in Oscars history to helm a double-digit amount of Best Picture nominees. Including him, six people who were already credited with directing at least one nominee rose higher in the ranks this year.
The previous Scorsese films that vied for Best Picture are 2007 winner “The Departed” (for which he earned his sole directing trophy) and nominees “Taxi Driver” (1977), “Raging Bull” (1981), “Goodfellas” (1991), “Gangs of New York” (2003), “The Aviator” (2005), “Hugo” (2012), “The Wolf of Wall Street” (2014), and “The Irishman” (2020). Of the 10, he received producing notices for the most recent four and directing bids for all but “Taxi Driver.” The only ones who...

“I’m always game,” Renner said. “I’m gonna be strong enough, that’s for sure. I’ll be ready.”
The Mayor of Kingstown actor, who broke 30 bones after being run over by a 14,300-pound snowcat at his home in Reno, Nevada, also shared how supportive his MCU co-stars have been.
“All those guys come to my bedside, and they’ve been with me all along through this recovery, so… if they want me, they could have me,” he added. “It would be something.”

After a string of false starts and red herrings, Kathryn Bigelow’s Aurora will start shooting this year – her first film since Detroit.
Here’s a story that we return to every so often with a great deal of hope. Reports have emerged (this time via What’s On Netflix) that production is set to begin on Kathryn Bigelow’s next project, sometime ‘in early 2024.’
Bigelow is of course the director of acclaimed political dramas such as Zero Dark Thirty and Detroit. She was the first female director to win an Academy Award for 2010’s The Hurt Locker and she’s the filmmaker behind 1991’s Point Break.
Considering that list of accolades, it’s a shame we haven’t seen a film from Bigelow in the last seven years, although every once in a while a story surfaces to announce that cameras will soon be rolling on her next project.

Film directing has long been dominated by men, and they continue to earn a vast majority of the Best Director nominations at the Oscars. Yet, there have been several trailblazing women that have broken through and earned bids at the Academy Awards. Specifically, eight of them have been nominated a total of nine times. Scroll through our photo gallery above (or click here for direct access) for a look back at all of the female directors nominated for Oscars in the Best Director category. To date, three females — Kathryn Bigelow, Chloe Zhao and Jane Campion — have taken home the statuette. At the upcoming 2024 Oscars, several women were in the running for the directing trophy, but only Justine Triet (“Anatomy of a Fall”) reaped a bid.
Triet became the eighth female director nominee in Oscar history for the French film starring Sandra Hüller as a woman who is accused of murdering her husband.
