So often, fear thrives in the unlit nooks of the unknown, and for many of us, that includes those who dedicate themselves to religious orders. Shrouded in intrigue and literal fabric, the combo of unwavering religious devotion and rejection of various worldly pleasures makes nuns ripe for genre exploration. While nuns are certainly trending, this is by no means the first time horror has blessed us with terrifying tales featuring such religious women.
In Häxan (1922), possessed nuns mingle with witches as director Benjamin Christensen explores the connection between mental health and mass hysteria. With movies like Alucarda (1975), Ms. 45 (1981), and St. Agatha (2018), the subgenre of nunsploitation comes into play to further explore themes of religious and sexual oppression.

"Immaculate" isn't.
Michael Mohan's new nunsploitation thriller doesn't possess the artistry or thoughtfulness to be a stirring analysis of Roman Catholic sexism, nor does it have the temerity to be an enjoyably trashy, violent, sex-soaked drive-in flick. To be sure, it possesses elements of both arthouse and grindhouse, but Mohan hasn't mastered either, leaving "Immaculate" in a frustrating middle-ground that will please no one. Some may be temporarily distracted by cinematographer Elisha Christian's clever, classy lighting choices -- there is a late-film chase through pitch-black catacombs that provides some modest thrills -- or by the funereal, liturgical score by Will Bates, but many will surely recognize a B-movie when they see it.

Exclusive: Universal has pre-emptively purchased the short story thriller package Don’t Look, with Janelle Monáe in talks to star.
Akela Cooper is set to adapt the screenplay based on the short story by Colin Bannon.
Monáe is in talks to produce through her Wondaland Pictures’ first-look deal with Universal Pictures, along with Scott Glassgold’s Ground Control. They are keeping the logline under wraps, based on Bannon’s unpublished short story.
Bannon is fresh from making a Universal deal for his horror short story Long Lost, produced by Steven Spielberg, Simon Kinberg and Glassgold. Glassgold and Cooper teamed on the short story sale It’s Over to Sony Pictures, with Glassgold and Roy Lee producing.

Nominees in 25 categories (including TV and commercials which are not included in this report) were selected by Visual Effects Society members at 39 in-person and virtual nomination events conducted worldwide over a 36-hour continuous process.
The nominations protocol included a review of each awards submission including “Befores and Afters” by a minimum of three different judging panels. Participating Ves members on the panels represented 25 countries.
The winners will be announced at the ceremony on February 21 at The Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles.

Canal+ Group and Warner Bros Discovery have announced the renewal of their exclusive premium pay TV agreement for Warner Bros Pictures films.
The multi-year agreement will allow Canal+ Group to continue offering to its subscribers exclusive access to Warner Bros Pictures films six months after their theatrical release in France.
This catalogue will include box office blockbuster Barbie – the biggest movie of the last 12 months with a global box office of nearly $1.5billion – and Wonka, starring Timothee Chalamet, currently on a box office figure of just over $400million.
Other titles include The Flash, Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom, Blue Beetle, The Color Purple and The Nun II.

The multi-year agreement will allow Canal+ Group to continue offering to its subscribers exclusive access to Warner Bros Pictures films six months after their theatrical release in France.
This catalogue will include box office blockbuster Barbie – the biggest movie of the last 12 months with a global box office of nearly $1.5billion – and Wonka, starring Timothee Chalamet, currently on a box office figure of just over $400million.
Other titles include The Flash, Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom, Blue Beetle, The Color Purple and The Nun II.

Indonesia’s cinema admissions grew by 14.5% year-on-year to reach 114.5 million in 2023, compared to 100 million the previous year, according to local box office analyst Bicara Box Office. That figure puts the market around 24% below the pre-pandemic figure of 152 million admissions in 2019.
Despite having a slow start to the year, local productions picked up the pace from September onwards and ended 2023 with 53.3 million admissions for a 48% market share, according to Bicara Box Office data.
In 2022, Indonesian films racked up 57 million admissions and a 56.5% market share, a year of fewer Hollywood releases, which also saw the record-breaking success of MD Pictures’ Kkn Di Desa Penari, which raked in 9.23 million admissions to become Indonesia’s biggest local film of all time (the film was also re-released in an extended version at the end of 2022 and the two versions combined pulled in more than 10 million admissions).

While the industry as a whole felt more downs than ups this year, horror films continued to be a consistent attraction overall. While the studio hits were not quite as splashy as they were 2022, the year saw the birth of new franchises (M3GAN, The Pope’s Exorcist, Talk to Me, Thanksgiving), the revitalization of the reliable favorites (Evil Dead Rise, Insidious: The Red Door, The Nun II), and reminded us just how essential writers, actors, and the all the creatives both in front of the camera and behind it are to making any of this not only work, but sell.
As for the big horror trend this year, controversy was thy name. While there were a few entries critics and audiences were able to rally around, most of them drew conflicting opinions — which this list is surely proof of.

Hollywood has always been enamored of franchises. Universal became synonymous with horror movies in the 1930s with their Classic Monsters run, while MGM mined Mickey Rooney's Andy Hardy character for 16 films. And then there's the "Blondie" series based on Chic Young's comic strip, which Columbia Pictures wrung bone dry for a staggering 28 installments.
For the most part, these films were produced quickly and cheaply for a quick score at the box office. It wasn't until 1962, when United Artists made a killing with the first James Bond movie ("Dr. No"), that studios began to view franchises as cash cows. With the subsequent success of the "Pink Panther" and "Planet of the Apes" movies, the industry became increasingly eager to turn its blockbusters into ongoing sagas. This filmmaking approach went into hyperdrive in 1977 with the unprecedented phenomenon of "Star Wars." From that point forward, Hollywood quickly became a franchise-driven town.

In two new landmark, multi-year deals for Spain’s top pay TV operator, Movistar Plus+ has inked partnership carriage deals with Warner Bros. Discovery and SkyShowtime. Both agreements were announced Friday.
Extending its partnership, the Wbd deal takes in current linear networks on Movistar Plus+ – Warner TV, TCM, Discovery Channel, Eurosport and CNN – plus premier Warner Bros. entertainment from Jan. 1 such as “Barbie,” “Meg 2,” “The Nun 2,” “Friends, “The Big “Bang Theory,” “Mrs Davis” and “The Winchester,” plus Max, scheduled to launch in Spain in Spring 2024.
SkyShowtime launched in February 2023 in Spain. The Movistar Plus+ pact marks SkyShowtime’s first deal with a Spanish operator.

Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour concert pic has achieved yet another milestone at the global box office.
AMC Theatres, which is distributing the film, announced Monday that Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour has amassed $250 million in worldwide movie ticket sales to rank among the top 20 biggest films of 2023. It’s easily the most successful concert film of all time.
Eras Tour finished Thanksgiving weekend with a North American total of $178.2 million and $71.8 million overseas.
It currently stands at No. 19 on the global chart not far behind The Nun II ($268 million) and The Flash ($270.1 million). Domestically, it stands at a dazzling No. 11 behind the likes of Sound of Freedom ($184.2 million) and John Wick: Chapter Four ($187.1 million).

Refresh for latest…: Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes very (very) narrowly missed the $100M mark globally in its opening weekend, but it’s as near as dammit with an estimated $98.5M through Sunday worldwide. The Francis Lawrence-directed prequel came in slightly higher than pre-frame projections overseas with $54.5M from 87 international box office markets. The drag on getting to the century milestone was domestic at $44M versus hopes for $50M+.
The top overseas market openings include the UK with a No. 1 of $6.7M, Germany also at No. 1 with $4.8M, China at a No. 3 of $4.5M, France with $4.1M at No. 1 and Mexico also at No. 1 with $3.7M. In general, we understand that Latin America saw some overperformance.
In China, there is no Maoyan audience score yet, though Douban critics have it at 7.1, on par with the first film and not the lowest of the franchise.

“The Nun II” is more evidence that “The Conjuring Universe” is among the most consistent and bankable franchises in Hollywood. It’s a straight-up sequel to “The Nun,” with both films now serving as prequels to “The Conjuring 2.” The Michael Chaves-directed entry earned $268 million worldwide on a $39 million budget. That was up from Chaves’ $197 million-grossing “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It” released in the Covid/Project Popcorn summer of 2021. After a limited theatrical release, “The Killer” made its streaming debut on Netflix on Nov. 10, quickly becoming the top film on the platform. The action thriller is based on a French graphic novel series of the same name and stars Michael Fassbender in the eponymous role of the killer, a professional assassin who misses his mark and accidentally kills the wrong target, becoming a target himself.
David Fincher, a prolific filmmaker known for his work on psychological thrillers, including “Seven” and “Fight Club,” directs the film. Work on the project began as far back as 2007, when the news broke that Fincher would be developing a film adaption of the comic book series with Paramount Pictures distributing. Over a decade later, it was reported that Netflix had picked it up as part of a larger deal with the filmmaker.

Fun fact: “Emily in Paris,” which films all across the city of Paris and throughout France, was originally slated to film in New York. The idea was to shoot the majority of the Netflix series in the U.S. and head to France for a few weeks to film exteriors of iconic locations. Upon discovering showrunner Darren Starr’s plans, director and executive producer Andy Fleming exclaimed, “This is crazy, you have to shoot [in Paris].”
Referencing the charmingly worn doors in Parisian apartments that would be difficult to recreate in the States, Fleming talked about how he pushed for production to cross the ocean. “I thought, if the writers go over there, they will get in a taxicab going the wrong way around the Louvre, and they will be embarrassed in a restaurant and they will do all of the things that Emily would do, and [that] will inform the writing,” said Fleming.

Universal Pictures’ “Five Nights at Freddy’s” has taken the video game franchise of the same name to new heights, as the film broke records with the largest first-day opening at the box office for a film with a simultaneous streaming release. Not only that, the supernatural horror film gave Peacock its biggest opening to date and surpassed “Halloween” to become Blumhouse’s best opening of all time.

Global streaming subscribers drop 700,000 to 95.1m.
Warner Bros Discovery (Wbd) stock fell more than 17% to $9.56 in afternoon trading after the company announced third quarter earnings where the highlights were a marginal overall revenues gain and a substantial fall in advertising revenue.
Overall revenues climbed 1% year-on-year to $9.98bn, while Barbie and The Nun II were the theatrical highlights of a light release schedule impacted by the Hollywood strikes.
The stricken advertising market resulted in a 12% year-on-year advertising revenues slide in the TV network segment reflecting the soft ads market in the United States. Wbd leadership warned advertising revenue in 2024 would continue to be challenged.

Warner Bros. Discovery shed more streaming subscribers in Max’s first full quarter of existence: July-September 2023. The company lost 700,000 streaming subs in the quarter, it reported on Wednesday; Max and Discovery+ now combine for 95.1 million streaming subscribers.
Wbd’s streaming business was able to turn a profit in the third quarter — just like it did at the beginning of the year. Adjusted Ebitda at direct-to-consumer was $111 million. The same segment lost money in Q2, but surprised with positive Ebitda in Q1, which is also the last time Wbd grew its streaming-subscriber base.
The loss of subs in the past two quarters is not really unexpected. Max, which launched on May 23, is a combination of the former HBO Max and Discovery+. The third successful horror franchise launched by James Wan (following "Insidious" and "Saw") has expanded into three distinct tracks of horror stories: "The Conjuring" films, following Ed and Lorraine Warren; the "Annabelle" films, centered on the titular doll; and "The Nun" films, centered on the demon Valak. "The Nun II" is the latest addition to the series, a massive hit at the box office and a film that laid the groundwork for what feels like the inevitable climax of the decades-spanning story. It feels like we're heading toward a final chapter like The Avengers, but with demons, possessed artifacts, and Patrick Wilson singing Elvis songs.

There are definitely some benefits to watching horror movies at home.
