The 1970s-set supernatural horror film The Sacrifice Game, the new film from The Ranger (you can read my 8/10 review Here) director Jenn Wexler, won the gold in the Best Canadian Feature category at the Fantasia International Film Festival back in August. Across the eight seasons of "Game of Thrones," there are many moments that are infuriating, most of them intentional. These are the acts of violence and injustice done to characters we love that make us connect even more to those particular characters. In season 1, the major instance of this is when the newly minted king Joffrey Baratheon (Jack Gleeson) orders the beheading of Ned Stark (Sean Bean). Italy’s Rai Cinema, which has four titles in this year’s Cannes selection, has closed a deal on Ron Howard’s next movie, “Origin of Species,” a hot project at the Cannes market starring Daisy Edgar-Jones, Ana de Armas, Jude Law and Alicia Vikander.
Rai Cinema chief Paolo Del Brocco said the company – which is the film arm of Italian state broadcaster Rai – has teamed up with Rome-based Lucisano Media Group to acquire Italian rights from CAA Media Finance on Howard’s survival thriller penned by Noah Pink (“Tetris”) about a a group of eclectics who turn their backs on civilization and head to the Galapagos.

Blue Fox Entertainment has acquired North American rights to “Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe,” a queer coming-of-age story about two teens who form a special bond after a chance meeting one summer. The sale comes a few months after its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Blue Fox is planning a wide theatrical release of the film this summer, though the exact date has yet to be determined. Blue Fox’s international division is handling the international sales.
“It’s rare when a best-selling book, talented crew, amazing director and cast all come together to create a ‘must see’ film, and we are very proud to bring ‘Aristotle and Dante’ to audiences across the U.S.,” said Blue Fox executive James Huntsman.

French actor and filmmaker Jacques Perrin has died at the age of 80. His family confirmed the news to Agence France Presse, no cause of death was given.
The Paris-born performer was known for playing Salvatore ‘Totò’ Di Vita in Giuseppe Tornatore’s Oscar-winning Cinema Paradiso. His career saw him rack up more than 70 feature film credits, with other notable roles including in Costa-Gavras’ Oscar-winning Z, and Girl with a Suitcase opposite Claudia Cardinale.
Perrin was comfortable acting in both French and Italian cinema, and also worked behind the camera, including directing several documentaries, such as 2001’s Winged Migration, about the migratory patterns of birds.
He achieved more than 50 credits as a producer, including the recent family pic The Wolf and the Lion.

The top box office story this weekend is the obvious one: “The Batman” (Warner Bros.) made an impressive $61 million in its second weekend at the multiplex, with only a 51 percent drop from its opening. Matt Reeves’ reboot of the D.C. Comics’ franchise is now at $238 million domestic, $463 million worldwide.
“The Batman” now looks like it could corral $400 million or more domestically. That would put it ahead of “Batman v Superman,” which opened better in 2016 but then collapsed (-69 percent second weekend) and totaled only $333 million (unadjusted). Credit positive reaction to the film for that, but also credit the new reality that the accepted norm is that more people see fewer movies.
Which brings us to the other big story, in which these “Batman” returns are only part of an interwoven set of results that all relate to the biggest issue theaters now face: The major titles are doing better than ever,...

Warner Bros. hasn’t reported grosses for Dune but at circa $150K as per industry sources it’s quadruple last weekend on more screens. Licorice Pizza and Belfast also had a big jump in runs so fatter grosses aren’t surprising. Others like West Side Story from Disney/20th are waiting on a big expansion. While total box office dollars for best picture contenders in the long haul to Oscar night won’t be setting any records, this post nom/Super Bowl Sunday/Valentine’s Day frame saw some nice moves.

Jackass, which began its life as a men-behaving-dumbly series on MTV back in 2000 has gone on to spawn four feature films (five if you include the 2013 spin-off Bad Grandpa). The movies—a collection of masochistic pranks, self-inflicted humiliations, and male camaraderie—have always been solid performers at the box office, especially in light of their modest budgets. Jackass Forever will be no exception. The film, which cost a bargain-basement $10 million to produce (and watching it you may wonder where even that much money went), is already solidly in the black after its opening weekend thanks to pandemic-weary audiences in need of a stupid laugh (Paramount had projected that it would open in the mid-teens). The R-rated comedy’s $23.5 million opening weekend came from 3,604 theaters, where it earned a $6,250 per-screen average. Led by “Jackass Forever” (Paramount), box office rebounded from last weekend’s rock bottom. Its gross of $23.5 million came in at the higher end of expectations and helped lift total grosses to around $60 million.
Meantime, Neon — which had the last two breakout openings for subtitled films with “Parasite” and “Portrait of a Lady on Fire” — saw a terrific start for “The Worst Person in the World.” With a per-theater average of $33,760 in four New York/Los Angeles theaters, it gave fresh hope that a high-end specialized film could bring viewers back to theaters.
At $60 million, this weekend’s total represents an improvement from the awful last two weeks — but you’d have to go back to 2000 to find a pre-Covid weekend that grossed less. Compared to the same pre-Covid weekend in 2020, the box office was 64 percent — the best showing since New Year’s weekend. The four-week rolling average remains a lowly 48 percent.

Saturday Update: Refresh for more analysis and top 10 chart A $10M movie based on a 22 year old reality TV series is decimating a $146M production based on a fatigued disaster movie genre this weekend. More to the point, Paramount’s Jackass Forever is rallying to a $20.7M No. 1 weekend win, well ahead of Lionsgate/Centropolis’ Roland Emmerich movie Moonfall which is plummeting to $9.1M.
Such disparities is what make the movie business, and box office, endlessly intriguing. One would think both of these movies would be prime for streaming, or the theatrical day-and-date model. ViacomCBS needs to trick out their own Paramount+ streaming service, while we already knew pre-pandemic that disaster movies about falling NYC edifices and eroding West Coast shorelines weren’t working pre-pandemic.

After a sleepy January mostly dominated by Spider-Man: No Way Home taking victory laps after its explosive December opening, February looks to be considerably more eventful. The star-powered slate includes a franchise follow-up (Death on the Nile) and a potential franchise starter (Uncharted) mixed in with a musical rom-com (Marry Me) and a comedy (Dog) to round things out, not to mention a potential boost to the specialty market once the Oscar nominations come out. French films grossed €91.4 million ($103 million) from 14.8 million admissions overseas last year, a 5.5% year-on-year increase, while China became the top territory for French film fare, ahead of Russia and Spain. Figures were unveiled by French promotion org Unifrance during a day of conferences hosted as part of its Rendez-Vous event in Paris.
While theaters around the world were once again closed for several months last year, as many as 719 French films released internationally, a 17.7% year-on-year increase.
In spite of the ongoing pandemic, French movies also shined at major film festivals with Audrey Diwan’s “Happening” and Julia Ducournau’s “Titane” winning the top prizes at Venice and Cannes, respectively. As many as 202 French movies were selected in the top 10 international film festivals, accounting for 21% of respective lineups, a 24% increase on 2020.

French film exports generated 91.4M euros ($103.6M) in 2021, a 5.5% increase on the previous year’s provisional figures, while admissions were up 8% to 14.8M. Comparatively, French films within France sold 39.2M tickets during the year. The figures were announced during the annual Unifrance Rendez-Vous with French Cinema which is taking place in Paris this week — one of the rare international gatherings in the current landscape that’s being held as a physical event.
Today’s numbers are provisional estimates and will be higher when they are trued up in the fall. For example, when originally announced in January 2021, the 2020 receipts were 86.6M euros, ultimately jumping to 101.7M euros when recalculated in November; a decline of over 60% versus 2019.
