The list of movies is only guaranteed to be available until the end of June, but until then Apple TV+ customers can watch some true classics.
Apple TV+ is continuing to step out of its wheelhouse and try something new in 2024. At the start of March, the streamer imported a wide selection of movies from various Hollywood studios, marking the first time in its history that Apple TV+ had added on a substantial number of non-original titles. Those films were only available for a limited time, some as short as a few weeks, but it proved popular enough for the platform to add more in April. Now, as first reported by 9to5 Mac, Apple TV+ is rolling out another wave of licensed films as it tries to determine which ones its audience are responding to the most.

“Let’s not make ’em laugh” seems to be the new mantra for rewarding comedies at the Emmys.
Clear-cut, humor-filled chuckle fests once dominated the Emmys for comedy series, with classics such as “Taxi,” “The Golden Girls,” “Friends” and “Seinfeld” amusing generations of fans and finding new life via reruns and streaming services.
However, at the dawn of the streaming era, the multi-pronged so-called dramedy began creeping up in the awards circle with titles such as Netflix’s “Orange Is the New Black” — which famously changed from comedy to drama — and Amazon Prime Video’s “Transparent.” As of late, the category has taken a more serious turn.
In recent years, the nominees and winners for comedy series have reflected a broader, more inclusive interpretation of comedy. Shows like Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and “Fleabag,” along with HBO’s “Barry” and Apple TV+’s “Ted Lasso” have garnered critical...

Step aside, Netflix — there’s a new churn leader in town.
Amazon Prime Video boasts the lowest rate of customer cancellations in the streaming industry, according to a new study by Parks Associates. Prime Video’s current annual churn rate is 8 percent, which means eight out of 100 Prime Video members cancel their service within a 12-month period. (A customer who returns within the same time frame would be counted as both churn and current subscriber.)
By comparison, it sounds like “90-Day Fiancé” is not creating many 365-day subscribers: The Discovery+ annual churn rate is a whopping 43 percent.
There’s a pretty big gap between the churn rates of league-leaders Prime Video and Netflix and the other major streaming platforms. From April 1, 2023 to March 31, 2024, Hulu’s churn rate was 15 percent, Max’s (fka HBO Max) was 17 percent, as was Peacock’s; the Disney+ churn rate was 21 percent and Paramount+ was 24 percent.

Sometimes rivals need to set differences aside in the interest of chasing more subscribers. Apple seems to be doing just that, sending a strong hint that it wants to develop an Apple TV+ app for rival Android devices.
Apple last week posted a job listing for an “Android Software Engineer – Apple TV App.” The listing calls for a “senior android engineer to lead the development of fun new features,” and it specifically mentions building an app that can let millions watch and discover television and sports. And if you’re based in San Diego, that could be you.
Reps for Apple did not respond for a request for comment.

The creation of a new Android-compatible Apple TV app will give Android users a better way to stream titles on Apple TV+.
Apple versus Android is perhaps the best-known feud in the tech world. The devout following that Apple has built with its devices may not be as large as Android’s pool of device users, but Apple has maintained a level of exclusivity by limiting many of its most popular features to its own devices in order to encourage more and more trend-chasing customers to make the switch. But a new report from Bloomberg indicates that Apple is preparing to change course a bit, at least with one feature, by finally agreeing to create an Apple TV app that will allow viewers to stream Apple TV+ and Mls Season Pass on Android mobile phones and tablets.

Hannah Waddingham has revealed she keeps a list in her head of all the people who tried to block her rise up the showbusiness ladder, and enjoys telling them this.
Deadline previously reported that the Ted Lasso star had told a BBC podcast that a teacher insulted her appearance, saying one side of her face looked as though she’d had a stroke, but that she used the insult to galvanise her ambition, saying, “I thought, I will do. Come hell or high water, I will work on screen.”
Now, the UK’s The Sun newspaper reports that, in conversation for the podcast Sunday Sitdown With Willie Geist, Waddingham has added a few more names to her mental blacklist, including the school bullies who called the tall star “a lanky freak,” the boyfriends who told her she was inadequate, and the casting directors who said she wasn’t the right...

Does your Apple TV+ membership come and go with new seasons of “Ted Lasso”? [Jeff Foxworthy Voice:] Then you might be a “Show-Chaser.”
Serial churners are so 2023 — 2024 is the year of the show-chaser, according to research firm Antenna. These folks currently may be out hunting baby reindeer. In its first four days of availability, “Baby Reindeer” was viewed 2.6 million times, according to Netflix. The following week, its first full one, the limited series from (and starring) Richard Gadd exploded to 13.3 million views — more than a five-fold increase. That tally nearly doubled the next week to 22 million views.
“Baby Reindeer” is a sensation fueled by word of mouth — and by word on TikTok — the type that could singlehandedly bring Netflix some new subscribers. But these hypothetical members are not very likely to stick around; they’re show-chasers, an (at least) semi-undesirable subset of serial churners.

The world is bleak and we could all use a laugh and yet, for some reason, the shows we classify as “comedies” these days — “The Bear”, “Ted Lasso”, and more recently, “Baby Reindeer” — all tend to deal in subject matters that don’t always give us the ha-ha’s we’ve come to expect from the genre. There are outliers however, such as “Abbott Elementary”, which, in a recent episode, managed to find the funny in the unfunny of one of the previous shows listed, as well as “Hacks”, whose delayed third season begins on May 2 and couldn’t be more needed.
Ahead of the Season 3 premiere, Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky spoke to The Hollywood Reporter to share their views on the lost art of comedy.
“To even be making a comedy today, we feel really lucky,” Statsky said. “For some reason, there seem to be fewer and fewer of them.

New data from Ampere Analysis shows the Apple TV+ library grew by 25% between February and March thanks to the addition of licensed movies.
The strategy for Apple TV+ has always been clear, even if outside observers didn’t necessarily agree with it. The streamer would showcase only Apple originals, a testament to the high production values and A-level stars the company is able to bring to its shows thanks to revenue generated by its device retailing segment. But that all changed in early March when the streamer imported more than 50 movies created by various other Hollywood studios for a short window. New data from Ampere Analysis suggests that perhaps Apple may not want to be so hasty in letting its next batch of licensed titles go if it decides to repeat the experiment again.

The current category champ, “The Bear,” is looking to become the 10th series to win this award for both of its first two seasons. It would join “The Phil Silvers Show,” “All in the Family,” “Taxi,” “Cheers,” “The Golden Girls,” “Frasier,” “30 Rock,” “Modern Family,” and “Ted Lasso” on this honor roll.
Of the seven other 2023 Best Comedy Series nominees, only “Abbott Elementary” and “Only Murders in the Building” are eligible to contend again. “Barry” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” officially concluded in spring 2023, while the futures of both “Jury Duty” and “Ted Lasso” remain uncertain. That leaves “Wednesday,” the confirmed second season of which will not air in time to qualify for consideration.

A new report from Bloomberg indicates the Apple TV’s FaceTime functionality could be set to expand in a big way.
It hasn’t been that long since Apple released a new model of its Apple TV streaming box. The third generation of Apple TV players rolled out to customers in October 2022, but a new report from Bloomberg indicates the company’s engineers could be hard at work on a new model of the player with an important new feature: a built-in camera to make FaceTime calls on Apple TV devices a cinch.
Now that Apple’s Vision Pro has launched, the company has time to turn its thoughts to whole-home technology. Gesture-based controls could help users swap video calls between screens and more without having to press buttons. The technology is meant to work in concert with iPhones and Vision Pro headsets as well. 7-Day Free Trial $9.99+ / month apple.

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we discuss the top-heavy Best Comedy Actress category.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’re back to type about comedy — and not the comedy of seeing Tom Ripley try to dodge a runaway motorboat. But let’s start there because while we agree with the consensus that the series, Jeremy Allen White and Ebon Moss-Bachrach should all repeat as Emmy winners this year, we’re both against the current tide in the Best Comedy Actress race. Streaming platforms are finding American streaming audiences increasingly taped out, and are looking for new markets to try and grow their customer bases.
Apple has its traveling cap on! A new report from The Information says that Apple is considering launching many of its subscription services, including its streamer Apple TV+ in China. The report suggests that Apple is boosting the number of team members responsible for other subscriptions like Apple Music in recent years, and is actively recruiting Chinese executives who are familiar with the tight restrictions the government places on media content in the country. An expansion to China by Apple TV+ would follow a pattern of recent international rollouts by other streaming services, as providers seek alternatives to an American customer base that appears to provide limited opportunities for subscriber growth.
China’s population of more than 1.4 billion people provides a tantalizing marketplace for streamers, regardless of government regulation.

The 2024 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament demonstrates a rising trend of sports simulcasts. Can alternate broadcasts help streamers differentiate?
Even for casual sports fans, it’s hard to ignore the number of options you have for watching just one sporting event these days. Take the 2024 NCAA Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournaments, for example. The national championship game on the men’s side will air on TNT, TBS, and stream on Max, while the women’s championship will be broadcast on ABC and streamed on ESPN+. Sports rightsholders are doing their best to meet fans wherever they are, and as customers struggle to find which channel or streamer is carrying which sport a new question for providers comes into focus: how do they differentiate themselves from the competition as sports games become more available in more places? One popular way that broadcasters have increasingly embraced in recent years is the alternate broadcast.
