Before taking on a role in the new The Office spinoff, Domhnall Gleeson sought advice from Steve Carell.
While appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the actor who played Michael Scott in the NBC workplace comedy, revealed Gleeson reached out to him.
“I know Domhnall Gleeson, who I did The Patient with, is going to be one of the leads. I know that for sure,” Carell told the late-night show host. “He’s an excellent actor.”
He continued, “He actually called me and asked, you know, ‘Should I do this? Did you enjoy it?'” The actor added, “He’s great.”
Fallon brought up the subject of The Office asking Carell if he knew that a spinoff was in the works.
“Yeah, and I don’t know if you know this — it’s gonna be all the original cast. I’m in it!” Carell joked.

It’s safe to say a lot of people had a lot of problems with the switch from HBO Max to Max, but there was at least one upside to the streaming shakeup. Now, it’s easier than ever to find the excellent queer stories floating around Warner Bros. Discovery’s platform.
During its lifespan, HBO Max never had an LGBTQ tag to filter its offerings and help subscribers find stories about the queer community more easily: a surprising move for a streamer named after the channel that brought us boundary-breaking works like “Six Feet Under” and the miniseries adaptation of “Angels in America.” That’s been remedied on Max, which features an “LGBTQ+ Voices” collection. You do have to scroll quite far down the homepage to find it in the collections carousel, but when you do, it makes searching for the queer films and shows on the streamer considerably easier.

Steve Carell will not be starring in the new iteration of “The Office” coming to Peacock, but he did encourage Domhnall Gleeson to sign on to star. The two actors acted together in FX’s 2022 limited series “The Patient,” which earned Carell a Screen Actors Guild award nomination. Gleeson, meanwhile, was nominated at the Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice Awards.
“I know Domhnall Gleeson – who I did ‘The Patient’ with – is going to be one of the leads. I know that for sure,” Carell told Jimmy Fallon during a recent interview on “The Tonight Show.” “He’s an excellent actor. And he actually called me and asked, you know, ‘Should I do this? Is this something… Did you enjoy it?’ I said, ‘Of course.'”
Gleeson is headlining “The Office” spinoff alongside “The White Lotus” Season 2 breakout Sabrina Impacciatore. Production on the new series is expected to begin in July.

Walton Goggins may be at the top of everyone’s minds for his recent turn as The Ghoul on Fallout, but the actor who also dazzles as Uncle Baby Billy on HBO‘s comedy The Righteous Gemstones is joining another big show as he features in the Season 3 ensemble for Mike White‘s The White Lotus. TV Insider caught up with the actor at the inaugural Gotham TV Awards on June 4, where he addressed his role, but couldn’t say much about specifics. “It really is the experience of a lifetime, isn’t it?” Goggins marvels. “I’ve been very fortunate over the course of my career to work with a lot of writer-directors that I look up to and have informed who I want to become as an artist,” he adds. (Credit: Emma McIntyre/Getty Images) When it comes to Mike White, Goggins says the creative is “high on that list.

Competing in the age of streaming is a tough business. At a time when Netflix enjoys a chokehold with its global dominance on the potential subscriber base, the push for quality content stands out of paramount importance.
Taking note of it, HBO took a leap of faith as it diverged away from its tried and tested formula of working productions like the fantasy epics of Game of Thrones to invest in satirical and dark comedies like The White Lotus.

When the 2023 Primetime Emmy nominations were revealed, Ali Wong and Pedro Pascal both had the honor of being included in multiple performance lineups. She made history as the first newcomer to the acting categories recognized for both live action (“Beef”) and voice (“Tuca & Bertie”) work, while he became the first actor nominated for three programs on his initial Emmy outing. These achievements made them the newest members of a group of 26 people who earned their first two (or three) acting Emmy nominations in a single year.
Wong’s eventual Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actress win for “Beef” made her the seventh person in this bunch to succeed on one of her bids. The first was Robert Cummings, who received 1955’s Best Single Performance by an Actor prize for “Twelve Angry Men” and simultaneously lost for his regular lead turn on “My Hero.”

“Feud: Bette and Joan” took the Emmys by storm in 2017, with the first season of the Ryan Murphy anthology show receiving rave reviews for its depiction of the rivalry between actresses Bette Davis (Susan Sarandon) and Joan Crawford (Jessica Lange).
Season two will hope to match that Emmy success (more on that later) with its portrayal of Truman Capote (Tom Hollander) and his falling out with a group of New York high society socialites known as the Swans. Capote wrote a fictionalized account of the Swans’ dramatic lives, leading to the Swans vowing revenge for betraying their confidence.
The glossy show is typically gorgeous, scandalous, and theatrical while the performances are all top-drawer. Hollander dazzles in the lead role as Capote, which is no mean feat considering the late, great Philip Seymour-Hoffman won the Best Actor Oscar for his turn as Capote in 2005’s “Capote”). Carrie Coon and Shea Whigham Talk Their ‘Fargo’ Reunion in ‘Lake George’ and ‘Mission: Impossible 8’
Lake George co-stars Carrie Coon and Shea Whigham are actors’ actors. They’re highly regarded by their peers, and they elevate every project they’re a part of, whether it’s an indie, a blockbuster or a prestigious cable series. And as soon as the audience sees them on the big or small screen, they immediately know they’re in good hands with the two reliable actors. The duo first worked together on season three of Noah Hawley’s Emmy-nominated Fargo series, and they spent six years trying to reunite until the SAG strike in the summer of 2023 presented a unique opportunity to do just that by way of an interim agreement.
The result is Jeffrey Reiner’s comedic neo-noir Lake George, which premieres tonight at New York City’s Tribeca Festival. The writer-director — who previously worked with Whigham and his daughter Giorgia on a 2018 episode of Dirty John — sent...

So far, 2024 has been much better for television than expected, given the impact of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes in 2023. However, there was one genre that viewers were desperate to see more of, and that was period dramas. Aside from Bridgerton, there weren't too many premieres to be excited about in the first half of the year.
The second half, however, has some very interesting titles that you might want to check out. Here are 8 of the most promising period drama premieres to look forward to in the coming months of 2024.
Winter Palace
A co-production of Switzerland's RTS1, Play Suisse and Netflix, Winter Palace takes viewers to the snowy mountains and luxurious hotel of the early 1900s. The show lands in a sweet spot between a typical period drama and the modernity of The White Lotus, offering a different take on the aristocracy of the time.

Das Original: Ringo Starr, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, und George Harrison in „The Beatles: Get Back“ (Credit: Apple Corps Ltd.)

Steve Zahn has joined Glen Powell in the upcoming Hulu comedy series “Chad Powers,” Variety has learned.
The series was originally picked up at Hulu in February. Powell will star in the series in addition to co-creating and co-writing the pilot with Michael Waldron, with both serving as executive producers. The show is based on the Chad Powers character created by Eli Manning for his Epsn+ docuseries “Eli’s Places.” Manning wanted to learn more about the walk-on process for college football, so he donned a wig and prosthetic makeup so he could go undercover during the Penn State football tryouts.
The official description for the series states, “When bad behavior nukes hotshot Qb Russ Holliday’s (Powell) college career, he disguises himself and walks onto a struggling Southern football team as the talented, affable Chad Powers.”
Zahn will play Jake Hudson, described as “the charismatic head coach of a flagging college football program.

The BBC has acquired the Peacock family whodunit Apples Never Fall, starring Annette Bening and Sam Neill, for its TV channels and streaming service BBC iPlayer. The U.K. public broadcaster said Monday that it will air the show later this year.
The limited drama series is based on Liane Moriarty’s (Big Little Lies, Nine Perfect Strangers) bestselling novel of the same name. Writer, showrunner and executive producer Melanie Marnich adapted the story into a seven-part drama produced by Heyday Television, which is part of Universal International Studios, a division of Universal Studio Group. Peacock is also part of Comcast-owned NBCUniversal.
Apples Never Fall centers on the seemingly picture-perfect Delaney family. Former tennis coaches Stan and Joy have sold their successful tennis academy and are ready to start what should be the golden years of their lives. While they look forward to spending time with their four adult children,...

Sydney Sweeney didn't take long to garner compliments as a gallery of her bikini snaps gained traction on Instagram last Spring. In March 2023, a fan feed dedicated to the 26-year-old actress shared ocean-set swimwear shots of her, ones taken in Australia as she shot an unnamed project. Flaunting her phenomenal figure as she got soaking wet in her bikinis, Sydney highlighted her muscles and her curves, and for one fan, The White Lotus favorite is an absolute "snack." While Sydney shot multiple movies in Australia last year, it's possible that these photos came from the set of rom-com Anyone But You.

Apple TV’s flagship series “The Morning Show” returned last fall with its third season and with it comes the show’s best cast to date. Nicole Beharie, Jon Hamm, Tig Notaro, and Stephen Fry all joined the cast while mainstays Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, and Billy Crudup all turned in their best work yet.
However, it’s the show’s supporting players, who have been here since day one, that makes the series so good. Karen Pittman is a prime example of that. The series depicts the behind-the-scenes drama of a US morning TV show and Pittman plays Mia Jordan, a key producer of said show. Pittman has always been an actress who possesses a powerful screen presence and that is true here, too. She captivates audiences (and the other actors) but also smartly sews vulnerability into a character who has some power in the show.

The concept of the limited series swept the TV world recently, and it felt like it happened overnight.
It is not an entirely new idea, as miniseries have existed since the time of radio dramas.
However, people lost interest in them at some point, and the era seemed to come to an end.
So much so that in 1991, the Emmy Awards merged Outstanding Miniseries with Outstanding TV Movie.
After numerous name changes to the category, the concept suddenly resurged -- the limited series was born.
With the popularity of American Horror Story, in 2015 they changed the category to Outstanding Limited Series.
TV Shows Should Make Stars, Not Depend On Them
But now, the idea carries almost no weight due to networks and streamers renewing the popular limited series and turning them into plain old series.

After a stint as an obnoxious, loud American in The White Lotus, Theo James wanted to challenge himself by playing someone totally different. Enter Eddie Horniman, the reserved, British Duke thrown into an aristocratic weed-growing empire in Guy Ritchie’s Netflix series The Gentlemen. Not only was this an opportunity for a Godfather-style ascension story and a chance to work with the Lock, Stock director, but James was also excited to take some pot shots at the gentry that owns so much British land — much to the bemusement of the real-life Duke of Beaufort, whose estate was the location for the shoot.
Deadline: What got you interested in The Gentlemen role?
Theo James: I love ascension stories. I’ve always found them really gratifying as an audience member, someone who starts off at one place and evolves into another. I also like the parallels. We talked with Guy and the writers,...

“One Day” star Ambika Mod was 19 years old when she decided she wanted to be a comedian. She had discovered stand-up and improv comedy while at university, but never told her parents, who emigrated to the U.K. from India, about her plans.
“They’d be like, ‘No, no, that’s not stable and you’ll be poor,’” Mod, now 28, says on this week’s “Just for Variety” podcast. “I had to show them via actions, not words.”
She first began performing at the 2015 Edinburgh Fringe Festival while still a student. Several appearances in short films followed before she landed her first major role two years ago in BBC’s medical drama “This Is Going to Hurt” opposite Ben Whishaw.
Then came her starring role in “One Day,” Netflix’s limited series adaptation of the bestselling novel. The 14-episode series (a redemption of sorts after a 2011 film flop starring Anne Hathaway...

A lot of movies (and TV shows) are too damn dark these days. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve sat down to watch something made in recent years to end up gradually getting frustrated that I can barely see anything on the screen. Usually, it seems intentional, like directors want you to struggle to see the image for some reason. It was jarring when we saw how dark Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem was, but now that seems to be normal. But the overwhelming darkness isn’t always intentional – for example, director Michael Mohan has taken to social media to let viewers know that his psychological horror film Immaculate (you can read our review Here) was not meant to be as dark as it is on most streaming services.
X user Sgtzima complained, “Immaculate is comically dark. I’m watching it in a dimly lit room in...

On “House of the Dragon,” HBO’s fantasy epic that takes place two centuries before “Game of Thrones,” Matt Smith plays Daemon, a warrior prince who exists among fire-breathing reptiles and palace intrigue. But if his character were ever to leap deeper into the supernatural, Smith has some ideas about where he could go. “I think Daemon would make a really good vampire,” he says. “I can imagine him wandering the earth alone for all eternity.”
He certainly has the coloring: Pallid and platinum-blonde, Daemon looks as if he could have arrived in the forbidding and dark world of Westeros all the way from Transylvania. But he might be too hotblooded to play the vampire. And “House of the Dragon” — a prequel to the Emmy-gobbling, earth-shattering hit “Game of Thrones,” set during the reign of the incestuous Targaryen dynasty — is unlikely to pivot into creature horror.

Theo James will star opposite Aaron Taylor-Johnson in British heist thriller Fuze, a film that comes with an explosive twist.
Theo James is one of those actors who seems to keep earning plaudits whatever he features in and as such, he’s got a couple of promising film projects in the pipeline. Chief among them? A starring role in David Mackenzie’s upcoming British heist thriller, Fuze.
James most recently starred in The Gentlemen, the small screen spin-off (pictured) from Guy Ritchie’s 2019 film. Before that, the British actor picked up plenty of critical praise for an excellent take on ‘the character you love to hate’ in Mike White’s second season of The White Lotus, the anthology drama series that has been praised by critics and audiences alike.

“They said, ‘Before we do anything, we have to tell you something,” Goggins recalled of a conversation with his agents. “You just got an offer for The White Lotus, and it’s a very good role.’ I said, ‘Could you say that again?’ They said, ‘Mike wants you.’”
He continued, “I said, ‘Could you excuse me a minute?’ I walked outside and I start bawling. Crying uncontrollably. I called my wife (Nadia Conners), shaking, and she said, ‘I fucking knew it!’ When we were watching it one time, she had said, ‘Why don’t you do The White Lotus?...

Walton Goggins Says Making ‘The White Lotus’ Is ‘Meta on Every Level’: ‘We’re Guests…Playing Guests’
Walton Goggins has been around for a while. His first credited acting roles date back to 1992, when he would’ve only been 21, and his supporting turns on FX’s “The Shield” and “Justified” helped him craft an image that appealed to the likes of big-name directors like Quintin Tarantino and Steven Spielberg. “I was talking to my agent,” Goggins said, reflecting on a lull in work, “and asked him, ‘Why is it so hard?’ And he said, ‘It isn’t hard,...

When the Emmy nominations are announced July 17, something will happen that hasn’t happened in 50 years: The nominees for best drama series will include only one previously nominated show, Netflix’s The Crown. I would love to be able to say that’s because there are so many great dramas out there and that TV Academy members are diligently watching them and championing different great ones this year. But the truth is, this field, historically among the strongest each season, now looks like a wasteland.
Such perennial nominees as HBO’s Succession and Westworld and AMC’s Better Call Saul have ended, along with second-tier contenders like Paramount+’s The Good Fight and Star Trek: Picard. Some ongoing, previously nominated shows were not back in time to be eligible, in some cases because of delays caused by the writers and actors strikes, including Netflix’s Stranger Things, Squid Game and Bodyguard; HBO/Max’s Euphoria,...
