“’I sacrificed my love on the altars of fame,’ Leonard Cohen said in the ‘70s,” “So Long, Marianne” showrunner Øystein Karlsen notes. Cohen was referring of course to his ‘60s decade-long relationship with Norway’s Marianne Ilhen, which shaped him for life.
One of the highest-profile and most anticipated world premieres in Series Mania main competition, “So Long, Marianne” is a coming of age love story which, in a quietly innovative, genre-breaking turn, asks whether the place in the world chosen by one character, Leonard Cohen, was always for his good.
Sold by Cineflix Rights as an eight-part series, “So Long, Marianne” begins in 1959 focusing on Norway’s Marianne Ilhen and Cohen’s love idyll on Hydra, a Greek island, which Ilhen reaches as the partner of budding Norwegian novelist Axel Jensen, and Cohen looking to find a place where, he says in Episode 1, he “can take responsibility for my own identity.

The original Max series “Full Circle” debuts on July 13. Directed by Steven Soderbergh, the new drama investigates a kidnapping gone wrong in New York, revealing the secrets and lies of multiple characters. Or as the trailer warns: “Everything is connected.” The six-episode limited series stars Zazie Beetz, Claire Danes, Jim Gaffigan, Jharrel Jerome, Timothy Olyphant, and Dennis Quaid.
Watch the “Full Circle” trailer:
The four-part documentary “Last Call: When A Serial Killer Stalked Queer New York” is set in the early 1990s as the AIDS crisis worsens. The media’s distorted coverage of the gay victims, coupled with the homophobic biases of the criminal justice system, undermine the investigation. The docuseries — which premieres on Max on July 9 — illustrates how the LGBTQ+ community fought to solve the murders and demand attention for those murdered.

Greta Thunberg says there is a “big lack of storytelling when it comes to the climate crisis” and urged decision-makers in the film and television industries to support writers willing to tackle the issue. The Swedish climate change activist was joined by Norwegian writer Jo Nesbø at the Edinburgh TV Festival on Tuesday afternoon where the two spoke about issues surrounding the lack of attention the entertainment industry gives the worldwide crisis.
“I know so many – whether it’s artists, storytellers or journalists – who tell me they really want to write about [the climate crisis] and that they really want to make stories about this, report about this, make movies about it or make art about it but that they don’t really have that support in order to do that,” she said. “So I think yes, there is a big lack of storytelling when it comes to the climate crisis whether it...

“It’s just not the kind of story that is easily made into a film anymore, but while I was reading it, I kept on thinking this would make an incredible limited series,” screenwriter Mark Bomback reveals in his exclusive interview with Gold Derby (watch the video above) about the origins of the new limited series based on the 2012 novel of the same name by William Landay. Bomback received the book three years ago from production company Anonymous Content, which had optioned it for film after “Harry Potter” screenwriter Steve Kloves had failed to adapt it for previous rights holder Warner Bros. Likening it to the 2003’s Oscar-winning “Mystic River,” Bomback responded to how “Defending Jacob” had “the twists and turns of a great thriller, but also really is about what it means to be a human being.”

If Apple TV+ is slightly on the back foot in the war of the streaming services it’s not for want of trying. With this latest crime drama it has definitely brought out the big guns – and it’s really paid off in terms of quality. On a more widely subscribed service, Defending Jacob could easily become the next hot button series garnering buzz like Bodyguard or Apple Tree Yard.
Based on the best selling novel by William Landay, Defending Jacob is a clever and complex courtroom drama packed with ambiguities and moral quandaries that makes some smart deviations from the novel and adding extra layers of tension in the best possible way.
Framed around a court hearing to determine whether or not an unspecified case should be pursued, Defending Jacob stars Captain America’s Chris Evans as Andy Barber, an assistant district attorney whose 14-year-old son Jacob has been...

In a case of one disrupter telling the story of another, Netflix has boarded a series about the creation of Spotify, the Swedish startup that’s become one of the world’s leading music services.
The as-yet-untitled limited series, to be directed by Per-Olav Sørensen (“Quicksand”), is inspired by the book “Spotify Untold” by Sven Carlsson and Jonas Leijonhufvud, who are business reporters at Sweden’s Dagens Industri.
The series will follow young Swedish tech entrepreneur Daniel Ek and his partner, Martin Lorentzon, who revolutionized the music industry at a turbulent time when it was being damaged by piracy and controlled by heavy-hitters who were fighting each other for a bigger piece of the pie. The pair took the industry by storm by offering free and legal streamed music around the world.

The TV series starring Josefin Asplund and Matthew Modine and produced by Sweden’s Yellow Bird was filmed with the support of the Trentino Film Commission in accordance with the T-Green Film Protocol. A gripping psychological thriller with a host of twists and turns and bolstered by an international cast, including the likes of Us star Matthew Modine (Stranger Things), young Swedish actress Josefin Asplund (of cult TV series Vikings and David Fincher’s The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo) and Italy’s Lorenzo Richelmy (La ragazza nella nebbia) is how we’d best describe TV series Sanctuary, shot by Oskar Thor Axelsson and Enrico Maria Artale in the Italian Trentino region last autumn. In its first season with eight episodes in the offing, Sanctuary is produced by Yellow Bird – the Swedish firm belonging to the Banijay Group, who are known for the Millenium Trilogy and successful TV series such as Wallander,...

Another day, another disaster movie though this time, don't expect The Rock to be showing up to save the day.
John Andreas Andersen's latest is The Quake, a disaster movie which imagines the destruction of Oslo if a big enough earthquake were to strike.
The movie co-stars Kristoffer Joner who also starred in another disaster movie from Norway, the disappointing The Wave which suggested destruction to come but didn't deliver until the very end. At least in the case of The Quake, it looks like the destruction will come early and there will be much of it.
Andersen has a background as a cinematographer, including Headhunters, Babycall and King of Devil's Island, which certainly bodes well for his latest which looks impressive.

With Mark Strong rumoured to be director Zack Snyder’s choice to take on the role of Lex Luthor in Man of Steel 2 (now probably to be known as Batman vs Superman or Superman vs Batman), is it too early to call this one – or could there yet be other, perhaps less obvious options for Snyder to choose from?
Having been one of the most anticipated films of 2013, Superman reboot Man of Steel lived up to the billing and is still taking the global box-office by storm; so much so that the production trio of Zack Snyder, David S. Goyer and Christopher Nolan have already hinted that a sequel could possibly be fast-tracked by Warner Brothers and in post-production as early as late 2014. This leaves a key casting decision to be made as far as the widely predicted return of classic Superman villain Lex Luthor is concerned; with seemingly only...

★★☆☆☆ Over the last few years Norwegian author Jo Nesbø has shot to fame on the back of a series of successful crime novels - principally involving Oslo detective, Harry Hole. Last year saw the first two films based on his stories arrive in the UK; slick thriller Headhunters (Hodejegerne, 2011) was based on one of his novels and Jackpot (Arme Riderre, 2011) on an original idea for the screen. The latter, directed by Magnus Martens, now arrives on DVD from Metrodome Distribution. Retaining the crime elements for which the author is known, this blackly comic effort is something of a damp squib.

2012 wasn’t a bad year for movies. It was actually a great year. The problem is, the movies we were most anticipating, specifically the Hollywood blockbusters like Prometheus and The Hobbit, didn’t live up to our expectations. With that said I still managed to make a list of 50 films I loved. Maybe I just have bad taste or maybe I just love movies but the most time consuming factor when making this list was sitting down and deciding what makes the cut and what doesn’t. Even with 50 films listed below, I found it hard to not include movies like Frankenweenie, The Loneliest Planet, Footnote, Compliance, Jiro Dreams of Sushi, Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry, and Searching For Sugar Man. Come to think of it, every film featured on our list of best documentaries could have easily snuck into this list. I haven’t seen everything of course. Below is...

★★☆☆☆ Magnus Martens' Jackpot (Arme Riddere, 2011) marks the latest cinematic excursion of Norwegian novelist Jo Nesbø. Based on an original story penned purposely for the screen, yet similar in both tone and texture to Morten Tyldum's Headhunters (Hodejegerne, 2011), Martens' dark comedy of errors is yet another example of the Scandinavian film industry's strong ongoing relationship with the crime genre.

2012 promises to be a fantastic year in cinema. Not too long ago, we posted a list of thirty of our most anticipated films of 2012, and so I decided I would keep track of my favourite films released each month. Here are my three favorite films released in May.
1- Laurence Anyways
Directed by Xavier Dolan
Screenplay by Xavier Dolan
Xavier Dolan reveals a romantic, albeit tragic side, in Laurence Anyways, a highly unconventional romance that shows the young filmmaker has matured since his sophomore effort, Les Amours Imaginaire. Putting aside the last hour of the pic, a gargantuan mess that stretches what seems like a lifetime – the first 90 minutes is by far his best work yet, proving that confidence and ambition are not something Dolan lacks.
Dolan’s imagery and dialogue is strong, with a soundtrack of handpicked 80′s and 90′s hits that service many of the film’s best...

As any die-hard thriller lover will tell you, Jo Nesbo is a pretty big deal. Heralded as the next Stieg Larsson years ago, only now are his novels being turned into films, notably 2008's Headhunters, or to use its original name, Hodejegerne.Released in his homeland of Norway and bought up by 50 different countries, Headhunters is now set to hit British shores, with a release date set for April 6.Starring Aksel Hennie in the lead role of Roger Brown, the film tells the tale of a successful headhunter / art thief who meets his match when he steals a painting from a former mercenary, Clas Greve (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) - a man he's also seeking to set up as the head of a firm.Today we've got a poster for you to enjoy, and without any further ado, here it is.And before you ask, yes, yes indeed, it's already being lined up for a Hollywood remake.
