Update: The Pixar Animation Studios cuts we previously told you about months ago are now commencing, according to sources familiar with the moves. The number of those let go is around 175, or 14% of the staff.
The pullback is largely due to Disney+ scaling back on direct-to-consumer series. Bob Iger has signaled the need for a more disciplined approach to streaming since returning as CEO in November 2022.
Since Covid, Pixar has yet to produce a bona-fide all-quadrants hit, though the animation division has also been hampered by distribution moves that sent three consecutive releases straight to streaming. Heading into summer, all eyes are on Inside Out 2, which openis over Fathers Day weekend, June 14 to 16. Director Kelsey Mann’s sequel is among a group of big movies expected to work this summer, raking in hundreds of millions of dollars.

Blumhouse has announced a trio of upcoming horror movie release dates today, the first of which is the official date for the sequel to hit video game movie Five Nights at Freddy’s.
Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 will release in theaters December 5, 2025.
Released in theaters and available for streaming on Peacock on the same day, the Emma Tammi-directed Five Night’s at Freddy’s was Blumhouse’s highest grossing movie of all time. In other words, it’s no surprise that the sequel was quickly greenlit.
In last year’s horror movie, “After accepting a security guard job from Steve, Mike (Josh Hutcherson; The Hunger Games Franchise) discovers an abandoned restaurant may actually be haunted by murderous animatronics.”
Two other upcoming Blumhouse sequels have also received new dates, with M3GAN 2.0 now coming to theaters on June 27, 2025, previously announced for May 16, 2025.

After debuting early last weekend, Universal’s The Fall Guy expanded to 78 overseas markets during its sophomore session, adding $25.4M for a running total of $36.9M at the international box office. That’s in line with Bullet Train and above The Lost City at the same point in release. Globally, the David Leitch-directed action romance is at $65.4M.
This is a fun picture with positive scores and exits so there’s hope for some legs here and playability throughout upcoming holidays. Still, an expensive movie, it came in slightly below projections domestically.
Internationally, the UK was a No. 1 debut with a strong $4.4M from 1,400 screens. Odeon was the top-performing circuit, and Everyman registered a 9% share, 3.1 points higher than their average for the year. Performance across 51 IMAX screens made up 7.6% of the total. The weekend result is well above Bullet Train and The Lost City. Monday is a holiday.
Mexico opened to $2.5M at No.

Can robots have a coming of age story? Well, Optimus Prime, Megatron and their assembled mechanical factions are alien robots known as Transformers, so, you know, anything is possible. And indeed, Transformers One takes us back to a time before sides had been taken in the war between the Autobots and Decepticons, when Optimus was known as Orion Pax, and Megatron went by the slightly less imposing moniker of D-16.
The animated adventure, directed by Toy Story 4's Josh Cooley, harkens back to the 1986 Transformers: The Movie, but is set even further back in time, when Cybertron holds secrets and threats – compelling Orion, D-16, B-127 (Aka Bumblebee) and their friend Elita-1 to become what they're supposed to be. They're about to go through a – pun entirely intended – transformational experience.

After years of the Michael Bay Transformers movies (plus Bumblebee and last year's Rise Of The Beasts), it's time to turn back the clock to the earlier days of the heroes — and villains — of Cybertron. Audiences have already been subjected to eight of these movies and they're infamously not good ("Bumblebee" is innocent and 1986's "The Transformers: The Movie" barely skirts by on nostalgia despite how cynical it was). Well, you see, the ninth "Transformers" movie will be going back to the beginning. Set on Cybertron, the home planet of the Robots in Disguise, the film is set before the Transformers got to Earth, before the Autobots and Decepticons went to war, and before Optimus Prime and Megatron had those names.

Autobots, assemble: Paramount has released a trailer for “Transformers One,” the animated prequel film led by the voices of Chris Hemsworth, Brian Tyree Henry and Scarlett Johansson.
Hemsworth voices young Optimus Prime, when he was just known as Orion Pax. Henry is D-16, before he became Optimus’ rival Megatron. The trailer shows the two starting out as simple worker bots, unable to transform into anything. But soon they gain the ability to change into vehicles and gain weapons, as a battle against a mysterious, plant-like villain unfolds on the Transformers’ home planet of Cybertron.
Other cast members include Johansson as Elita, Keegan-Michael Key as Bumblebee, Jon Hamm as Sentinel Prime and Laurence Fishburne as Alpha Trion. Hemsworth and Henry introduced a first look at the prequel film April 11 at CinemaCon.

When Pixar released "Inside Out" back in 2015, the studio introduced us to five core emotions inside the mind of Riley, an 11-year old girl leaving her hometown of Minnesota and moving with her parents to a new home in San Francisco. That came with a lot of complicated feelings, and the emotions of Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Anger (Lewis Black), Fear (Bill Hader), and Disgust (Mindy Kaling) helped Riley worked through all the hurdles, allowing the feelings to learn something about themselves and the girl they've nurtured over the years.
"Inside Out 2" is about to make Riley's life even more complicated by introducing some new emotions. Though Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust are all back, they have to deal with the arrival of Anxiety (Maya Hawke), Envy (Ayo Edebiri), Ennui (Adèle Exarchopoulos), and Embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser). When it comes to complex and challenging roles that require submitting oneself fully to the process, few actors can claim to have achieved what Tom Hanks has. The two-time Oscar winner is synonymous with some of the most iconic characters in films like Forrest Gump, Philadelphia, Cast Away, and many more that have showcased his prowess as a performer.

Chris Hemsworth, the voice of a young Optimus Prime, and Brian Tyree Henry, the voice of a young Megatron, got an enthusiastic welcome at CinemaCon as they introduced a first look and 3D scene from “Transformers One,” Paramount’s animated origin story based on the Hasbro toys. “This origin story is how they transformed from brothers in arms to sworn enemies,” said Henry from Las Vegas on Thursday.
In the clip, Optimus Prime, Megatron and their friends “proven worthy” are given their powers to transform — and awkwardly get accustomed to using those powers. They then enter a cargo train and for the first time see the surface of their home planet Cybertron, where the movie is set. The stylized look of the surface is a vast environment of rock-like structures that, like the bots, grow and transform.

Since 2007, the "Transformers" movies have been A) Primarily set on Earth (excepting prologues in "Dark of the Moon" and "Bumblebee" showing the war for planet Cybertron) and B) Live-action, using CGI to integrate the Autobots and Decepticons into real settings. Director Josh Cooley ("Toy Story 4") is about to change that with "Transformers One." /Film's Ryan Scott, who attended the Paramount Pictures panel at CinemaCon 2024, got an early look at the upcoming animated movie.
"Transformers One" is a prequel set before the war when the Autobots and Decepticons were still one people. Since the movie is set entirely on Cybertron with only robot characters, it makes sense to tell the story through animation. "Transformers" is no stranger to prequels -- check out the comic series "The War Within," High Moon Studios' video game duology "War for Cybertron" and "Fall of Cybertron," and more. Still, this is new territory for the films.

One year after Paramount Pictures broke news at CinemaCon that Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson and Brian Tyree Henry had signed on for the animated Transformers One — the first animated film in the franchise in nearly four decades — the studio welcomed that trio back to introduce their work.
Hemsworth, Johansson and Henry had official duties during Paramount’s studio presentation by pumping a new extended trailer that played for the gathering of theater owners (ahead of a wide launch April 18) as well as pulling back the curtain on the first scene from Transformers One in 3D. Johansson appeared on the big screen in a recorded message from New York, where she’s at work on her directorial debut, Eleanor the Great.
“I’m so incredibly proud of the the work that we’ve all done,” the actress said, teasing that the film is “unlike anything you’ve ever seen onscreen.”

A busy holdover weekend for wide studio releases was led by the trio of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Kung Fu Panda 4 and Dune: Part Two. And, in a soaring performance, Hayao Miyazaki’s Oscar winner The Boy and the Heron swooped into China helping the market set a new Qingming holiday record.
Meanwhile, Best Picture Oscar winner Oppenheimer, boosted by its release in Japan, has now become Christopher Nolan’s biggest movie ever at the international box office.
Before we dig into all of that, there was also fresh blood in some overseas areas with Disney/20th Century Studios’ The First Omen debuting to $9.1M from 43 markets (about 76% of the offshore landscape and notably not including France and Germany which go next weekend). This is about as expected. The global bow is $17.5M.
Latin America leans in on horror and the prequel performed best in Mexico where it opened No.

It’s been five years since Toy Story 4, the critically acclaimed fourth installment in one of Pixar’s greatest animated franchises, was released. While a sequel was announced back in February 2023 by Bob Iger, the movie is still not even close to being released, but we are happy to say that we finally have an official release date for the upcoming Toy Story 5 movie, which is set for a June 19, 2026 release. Yes, it’s a long wait, but Toy Story fans will have gotten used to it by now since the shortest span between two movies from the franchise was an enormous four years, which passed between the release of Toy Story and Toy Story 2.

It was just last week we were celebrating the 20th anniversary of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, which catapulted Michel Gondry into the Hollywood system with the likes of Be Kind Rewind and The Green Hornet. After the failure of that superhero tentpole, he retreated back to France, directing a handful of smaller-scale features, the latest of which, The Book of Solutions, gets meta following a filmmaker struggling with the editing of his big-budget project. While no plot details have been unveiled, according to Deadline, Atlantis is “a coming-of-age musical, set in 1977 Virginia Beach, which draws inspiration from Williams’ childhood growing up in the city’s Atlantis Apartments.” In addition to Gondry signed on as director, screenwriters on board are Toy Story 4’s Martin Hynes and Tick, Tick…Boom’s Steven Levenson.
Atlantis was revealed back in 2017. While Hynes was attached even as far back as then, originally Michael Mayer – who won the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical for Spring Awakening – was set to direct.

Our newest Best Supporting Actress Oscar-winner, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, looks to have her next project in view. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the star of “The Holdovers” will join a new musical from director Michel Gondry and producer Pharrell Williams. The project is said to be based on Williams’s youth in Virginia Beach in the 1970s. (I hope we get to watch his very tall hat grow.) IMDb has the title of the film listed as “Atlantis,” but this is unconfirmed by THR.
The screenplay is written by Martin Hynes, whose previous writing credits include “Toy Story 4” and “Stealing Harvard” (and also playing George Lucas in the legendary short “George Lucas in Love”), and Steven Levenson, whose musical credits include “Dear Evan Hanson” and “tick, tick…Boom.” Kelvin Harrison Jr., recently seen in “Chevalier” and “Elvis” is believed to be starring, and IMDb lists Andre 3000, Mary J. Blige,...

Last week, news broke that Bill Hader would voice the lead in Warner Bros. new fully animated movie The Cat in the Hat, based on Dr. Seuss’ 1957 classic children’s book. Today, the studio confirmed that the film will hit theaters in March 2026, with Hader joined by current SNL player Bowen Yang and longtime SNL writer Paula Pell, as well as Quinta Brunson, Matt Berry, and Xochitl Gomez.
Hader is a seasoned voice actor whose talent has won him roles in Sausage Party, Toy Story 4, and Bob’s Burgers, so it’s easy to see, or rather, hear, why WB would turn to Hader for its new Cat in the Hat movie — but in this case, Warner Bros. execs also had a visual aid, though it’s up for debate whether it helped Hader’s case or hurt it.

Indeed, “Barbenheimer” defined the awards season just as much as it dominated the box office, accounting for a combined 21 Oscar nominations this year including Best Picture bids for both. After “Elemental” was the studio’s biggest hit since “Toy Story 4,” Pixar hopes to continue its commercial bounce-back with another sequel, “Inside Out 2.” Smart move on Pixar’s part: the 2015 original film was the animation studio’s last true critical darling, making several critical top 10 lists that year. To be fair, other recent Pixar films have scored well with critics too, but “Inside Out 2” still needs fresh take on its premise for everyone to take it seriously.

Life is about to become pure chaos thanks to every teen’s dreaded emotion: anxiety. (It’s pretty bad for grownups too.)
Maya Hawke joins Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” as Anxiety, the new voice inside tween Riley’s (Kensington Tallman) head. Join the club. Just as Riley is set to start high school, feelings of Envy (Ayo Edebiri), Embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser), and Ennui (Adèle Exarchopoulos) join in. Actors Amy Poehler, Phyllis Smith, Lewis Black, Tony Hale, and Liza Lapira play Riley’s preexisting feelings of Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust. It’s getting crowded in there….
Lilimar, Sumayyah Nuriddin-Green, and Grace Lu voice Riley’s friends, while Diane Lane and Kyle MacLachlan return as her parents. Yvette Nicole Brown voices Coach Roberts, who heads up a summer hockey camp. Additional voice actors include Paula Pell, Sarayu Blue, Flea, Ron Funches, Dave Goelz, James Austin Johnson, Bobby Moynihan,...
