This article contains spoilers for the final episodes of Young Sheldon.
Allow me to offer you a peek into the TV-viewing habits of the Bojalad household. I was not a dedicated watcher of The Big Bang Theory, nor its prequel spinoff Young Sheldon. I am, however, a daily watcher of American quiz show institution Jeopardy!.
Since Jeopardy! airs at 7:30 p.m. Et on CBS in my particular TV market (it broadcasts on NBC or ABC in other parts of the country at varying times), sometimes I forget to change the channel and catch some of the 8 p.m. Et showing of Young Sheldon on Thursday nights. One of those “accidental Young Sheldon” nights just happened to occur on May 16, the date of the two-part series finale. That was the night I discovered that my wife, and pretty much the rest of the TV-viewing public, really, really loves Sheldon’s dad,...

Nic Pizzolatto got his career as a storyteller started by writing short stories and a novel called Galveston, then made his move into television by writing a couple episodes of the first season of the AMC series The Killing. He wasn’t pleased with that experience, telling Nola.com that, “I want to be the guiding vision. I don’t do well serving someone else’s vision.” So he left The Killing as it headed into season 2 and went off to create his own show: True Detective, which found a home at HBO. Pizzolatto’s deal with HBO was renewed twice over the years as he crafted three seasons of True Detective, with his final deal with the network earning him $3 million a year. He was going to work on the network’s Perry Mason reboot, but had to let it go so he could focus on True Detective. Once True Detective season 3 wrapped up,...

“Can’t blame me.” Those are the words of Nic Pizzolatto, the creator of True Detective, in response to a post on social media criticizing season four of the HBO anthology, the first cycle in which he has had no direct involvement. That tweet, as well as reposts of messages by the viewers critical of the new season, raises the question of what the show’s original creator has been up to since he left the series.
To refresh: The 2014 season one of True Detective, starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as Louisiana detectives tracking a serial killer, was a breakout hit for HBO, earning a Rotten Tomatoes score of 91 among critics and an 88 audience score. The freshman run went on to collect a franchise-high 12 Emmy nominations, helping Pizzolatto skyrocket to fame.

The life of Rosa Bonheur, a trailblazing feminist and artist who rose to fame in 19th century France, will be played by Melanie Laurent in a sprawling period movie directed by Fabienne Berthaud.
“Rosa Bonheur” is being produced by Carole Scotta, Barbara Letellier and Caroline Benjo at Haut et Court, the company behind “Coco Before Chanel” and “The Night of the 12th,” which won a raft of Cesar Awards last year.
The biopic reteams Haut et Court with Berthaud following her previous films, notably Diane Kruger starrer ”Lily Sometimes,” which played at Cannes’ Director’s fortnight in 2010, and 2019’s ”A Bigger World,” starring Cecile de France, which bowed at Venice. Haut et Court will also distribute “Rosa Bonheur” in France.

The man who made "True Detective" is now going to make a horror movie with the industry's premier producer of horror movies. Nic Pizzolatto has revealed that he has been contracted to write and direct a film for Blumhouse Productions, the studio behind hits such as "The Purge," "The Black Phone," and the current reigning box office champ "Five Nights at Freddy's" among many, many others. Depending on how things shake out, this could wind up serving as Pizzolatto's feature directorial debut. However, that is not set in stone at this stage.
I attended a panel that Pizzolatto spoke at during this year's Austin Film Festival. During the panel, the filmmaker best known for creating HBO's hit anthology series "True Detective" revealed that he's set to make "an occult detective story" for Blumhouse, for which he's already written the script. Here's what he had to say about it:

"Okay, it's showtime!" Netflix has dropped the full trailer for the French heist comedy called Wingwomen, the latest feature film directed by actress Mélanie Laurent (following up her films The Mad Women's Ball and Galveston previously). The film's original French title is just Voleuses, which translates to Thieves, but apparently this doesn't work as well in English - so they switched to Wingwomen. Inspired by Bastien Vivès, Jérôme Mulot and Florent Ruppert's French graphic novel "La Grande Odalisque", the film is about a gang of female expert thieves targeting high-end loot. Tired of life on the run, two expert thieves and best friends recruit feisty Sam (Bresch) to assist them with one last job — unlike any they've done before. This fun action comedy stars Adèle Exarchopoulos, Mélanie Laurent, and Manon Bresch as the three main women, with Philippe Katerine, Felix Moati, and Isabelle Adjani as Marraine. Looks like it'll be entertaining.

"True Detective" creator Nic Pizzolatto will make his feature film directorial debut with the drama "Easy's Waltz." Deadline confirmed the news, revealing the project will star Vince Vaughn alongside Michelle Monaghan, Simon Rex, and Al Pacino. Unsurprisingly, given his history of penning entire seasons of his crime drama anthology solo, Pizzolatto will also be on screenwriting duty for the film, which is described as a mix of "Swingers" and "A Star Is Born."
"Easy's Waltz" will reportedly focus on a "down-on-his-luck comedian-crooner" in modern-day Las Vegas, who navigates the city alongside "old-school Vegas personalities." Not much else is known about the project, which is being produced by Margot Hand, who also lent her producing talents to 2021's "Passing."
No release has been announced, and further details are yet to be revealed, but this will be the second time Pizzolatto and Vaughn have teamed up, following the latter's starring role in season 2 of "True Detective.

Exclusive: Roadside Attractions and Vertical Entertainment have prevailed in a bidding war surrounding the Sundance thriller Emily the Criminal, starring and produced by Aubrey Plaza, claiming North American rights. They’ve slated the film for an exclusive theatrical release this year, with Redbox joining the partnership for home entertainment distribution.
John Patton Ford’s feature directorial debut follows Emily (Plaza), who is saddled with student debt and locked out of the job market due to a minor criminal record. Desperate for income, she takes a shady gig as a “dummy shopper,” buying goods with stolen credit cards supplied by a handsome and charismatic middleman named Youcef (Theo Rossi). Faced with a series of dead-end job interviews, Emily soon finds herself seduced by the quick cash and illicit thrills of black-market capitalism, and increasingly interested in her mentor Youcef. About Endlessness (Roy Andersson)
“What should I do now that I have lost my faith?” is the question that animates About Endlessness; this being the new film by Roy Andersson, it is delivered in a doctor’s waiting room, over and over again, in a creaky voice, by a dumpy man in late middle age who continues his plaint even after the doctor and his receptionist gruntingly force him outside into the hallway, from whence they can hear him scratching at the door like a zombie. About Endlessness is Roy Andersson’s fourth film of this century; it looks much like the previous three, and nothing like anything else ever made. – Mark A. (full review)

With the TIFF world premiere The Mad Women’s Ball (Le Bal des folles), Mélanie Laurent proves again to be an equal force in front of and behind the camera. There are the deeply memorable performances in Inglourious Basterds, Le Concert, Beginners, Enemy, and Alexandre Aja’s Oxygen. She also released a lovely album, En t’attendant, in 2011; the title track features one of the most positively glorious screams ever recorded. In the last decade, Laurent has directed six films—2011’s The Adopted, 2014’s Breathe, 2015’s Tomorrow (co-helmed with Cyril Dion), 2017’s Diving, 2018’s Galveston, and now The Mad Women’s Ball. Her latest is without question her most ambitious, finest film.
The Mad Women’s Ball is an inspired spin on a familiar trope—the individual institutionalized against her will. Two elements elevate this material, from a novel by Victoria Mas (about which more here). First is the setting: Paris 1885. The...

Exclusive: Queen Latifah, Oscar winner Robert Duvall, and Ben Foster will star opposite Adam Sandler in Hustle, the Netflix basketball feature which is being directed by Jeremiah Zagar. Sandler, who earlier this year extended his production deal with the streamer, will produce under Happy Madison banner, with LeBron James’ The SpringHill Company and Roth/Kirschenbaum Films.
NBA player Juancho Hernangomez, Jordan Hull (The L Word: Generation Q), Maria Botto ( Mad Dogs), Ainhoa Pillet, and sports commentator Kenny Smith also made the casting roster.
Sandler stars as a down on his luck basketball scout who discovers a once-in-a-lifetime player with a rocky past abroad and takes it upon himself to bring the phenom to the States without his team’s approval. Against the odds, they have one final shot to prove they have what it takes to make it in the NBA.
Taylor Materne and Oscar nominee Will Fetters penned the screenplay.

Sony’s The Nightingale WWII drama starring Elle and Dakota Fanning, which was suppose to come out at the end of this year, has been pushed to Dec. 22, 2021 due to the Covid-19 production shutdown.
Real-life sisters Elle and Dakota Fanning will play on-screen sisters in the coming-of-age story adapted from Kristin Hannah’s international bestseller. Pic, which is being directed by Melanie Laurent, is set on the eve of World War II and follows the sisters’ struggle to survive and resist the German occupation of France. The story was inspired by the courageous women of the French Resistance who helped downed Allied airmen escape Nazi-occupied territory and hid Jewish children.
The project reteams Laurent with Elle Fanning after the duo worked on the 2018 movie Galveston together.
The Nightingale has been published in 45 languages, and went on to sell 3.5 million copies in the U.S. alone and became a No. 1 New York Times...

Well here we are. April is going to be a fairly sedentary and isolating month for a lot of people. At least we now thankfully have some guidance as to our entertainment options as HBO has released its new streaming releases for April 2020.
HBO’s original series premieres are pretty busy this month. The fourth season of Issa Rae’s excellent comedy Insecure arrives on April 12. That’s preceded by the fascinating docuseries Atlanta’s Missing and Murdered: The Lost Children and followed by book adaptation I Know This Much is True.
On the film side of things there are a few exciting options. Good Boys arrives on April 4, It: Chapter Two on April 11, and Stuber on April 18. Some older movies arriving on April 1 are Team America: World Police, Die Hard, and Slumdog Millionaire.
Here is everything else coming to HBO Now and HBO Go in April 2020 via HBO PR.

Melanie Laurent, the successful French actor (“Inglourious Basterds”) and filmmaker (“Gaveston”), is set to write and direct “The Mad Women’s Ball,” a period thriller based on the award-wining novel by Victoria Mas.
Alain Goldman’s Legende Films, the well-established French production outfit behind Marion Cotillard starrer “La Môme,” “The Round Up” and “An Officer and a Spy,” is set to produce “The Mad Women’s Ball.” The company has acquired the rights to the book which won the high school students’s prestigious Renaudot prize last year.
The story of “The Mad Women’s Ball” takes place at the end of the 19th century in Paris, at a time when women deemed too rebellious or difficult were frequently labeled as insane and institutionalized. The action unfolds at the Salpêtrière hospital where these women diagnosed with different kinds of nervous system disorders were confined and put under the supervision of neurologists such as Jean-Martin Charcot.

The latest batch of new members invited to the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences continues a tradition from the last few years, with many more nonwhite members and the first ever gender-equal invite list.
This year the Academy invited 842 members into their ranks. Exactly half were women, and 29% were people of color. It puts the Academy on pace to meet its 2020 diversity goals, if not surpass them. The number of nonwhite members has already doubled in the last three years, and the number of female members could double by next year.

Ben Monder has spent more than two decades carving out an extremely personal aesthetic niche. The guitarist has played with tons of jazz luminaries, including Paul Motian and Maria Schneider, but recent albums under his own name — like 2005’s Oceana and 2013’s Hydra — feature sprawling, immersive, micro-detailed long-form compositions that seem to land somewhere between technical metal and ethereal art song.
It’s fitting that a player this unusual forged an alliance with David Bowie, a rock star who never allowed genre to fence him in. Monder joined an illustrious...

You love Ally from “A Star Is Born,” and next year you’ll fall for Violet in “Teen Spirit.” Marking the directorial debut of “The Social Network” and “The Handmaid’s Tale” actor Max Minghella, “Teen Spirit” sets the coming-of-age story in the wildly competitive world of music competition.
The official “Teen Spirit” synopsis reads: “Violet (Fanning) is a shy teenager who dreams of escaping her small town and pursuing her passion to sing.
