From the co-creator of Outnumbered comes a historical comedy called Fools, with Karen Gillan leading the cast. More here.
Karen Gillan’s just gone and signed up a new lead screen role, as she’s set to head the ensemble of the upcoming historical comedy, Fools.
The movie has been written and directed by Guy Jenkin, whose credits include Outnumbered and its sort of spin-off film, What We Did On Our Holiday. He’s attracted quite a cast too, on top of Karen Gillan’s headline act.
Alongside her are award-winner Pasty Ferran, the mighty Brenda Blethyn, and the peerless Jim Broadbent.
Karen Gillan – famous of course for Doctor Who, her Marvel work, Jumanji, and appearing on the cover of Film Stories magazine – will be playing Queen Mary I, in a story set just after the death of Henry VIII. Broadbent is Cardinal Pole (begging your pardon), whilst Patsy Ferran...

Screen canvasses industry opinion on Langan’s tenure and the prospects for one of the UK’s cornerstone funders.
There have been warm tributes to Christine Langan as news broke yesterday of her impending departure from BBC Films to join UK production outfit Baby Cow.
Attention is also now beginning to turn to who is likely to be her successor and what plans the BBC has for its film arm in the long run.
“Christine leaves BBC Films in good shape,” commented producer Stewart Mackinnon of Headline Pictures, who worked with the broadcaster’s film arm on titles including Quartet and The Invisible Woman, among other projects.
Pride producer David Livingstone noted Langan’s “incisiveness.”
“The thing I remember particularly about Christine is her giving very good notes about the final editing of the film (Pride). She was very clear and very precise, and with a light hand on the tiller,” Livingstone said.

Need a laugh? Here's our guide to 25 comedies that are on Netflix UK now, and are well worth your time...
Putting aside all of the chunter about VPNs and rising subscription costs for a moment, there are more hidden gems to be discovered on Netflix UK than you might expect, and we've been combing through the streaming site's current catalogue to find some of the most underappreciated comedies on offer.
We've come up with this fairly broad selection of films that varies on several fronts. We've picked out a mix of belly laughers and dark comedies, with a couple of dramedies thrown in for good measure. They're not all big Hollywood comedies, but neither are they all films that you're hearing about for the first time, though we've tried to order them according to how well known they may or may not be. Robert Carlyle and Emma Thompson in The Legend Of Barney Thomson Robert Carlyle's directorial debut The Legend Of Barney Thomson picked up the top movie award at the Scottish BAFTAs last night.
The film, which is released on DVD today, tells the story of a hapless barber who becomes an accidental murderer. It was named best film - beating 16 Years Till Summer and What We Did On Our Holiday - and also saw Emma Thompson walk off with the prize for best actress.
Carlyle was pipped to the acting prize, however, by newcomer David Elliot, who took home the award for his portrayal of an Edinburgh soldier who was killed in Afghanistan in Kajaki: The True Story.
Glaswegian Bill Paterson - who will soon be seen in the film adaptation of Dad's Army - won a special award for outstanding contribution to film and television. David Balfour - who...

Robert Carlyle and Emma Thompson in The Legend Of Barney Thomson
This year's Scottish BAFTA nominations were announced today, and things are looking good for Robert Carlyle's debut film as a director, The Legend Of Barney Thomson. The bloody tale of an earnest hairdresser out of his depth, it opened the Edinburgh International Film Festival earlier this year and went on to enjoy a warm reception at the box office. Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin's What We Did On Our Holiday has also secured multiple nominations.
"It is with immense joy and a huge honour that I have been asked to host the British Academy Scotland Awards again this year," said radio DJ Edith Bowman. "Any opportunity to celebrate and shout about the huge amount of talent coming out of Scotland is a genuine must for me. I can't wait."

What We Did on Our Holiday
Written by Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin
Directed by Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin
U.K., 2015
Were Bill Cosby’s name not synonymous with mud right now, What We Did on Our Holiday could be easily titled Kids Say the Darndest Things. Big names like Rosamund Pike and David Tennant headline the film, but it’s the kids who steal the show. Writer/directors Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin take their experience from running BBC’s Outnumbered and utilize the improvisational skills of youngsters Emilia Jones, Bobby Smalldridge and Harriet Turnbull to pair off against legend Billy Connolly to make a charming summer comedy.
Gordy MacLeod’s (Billy Connolly) seventy-fifth birthday is coming up, and Doug (Doug Tennant) and Abi (Rosamund Pike, far removed from her Oscar-nominated performance as Amy in Gone Girl, playing a loving mother of two) are taking their three children...

First and foremost, what is likely to end up being the biggest blockbuster of the year, Avengers: Age of Ultron, has scored a PG-13 ratings for "intense sequences of sci-fi action, violence and destruction, and for some suggestive comments." This isn't too much different than the PG-13 rating for The Avengers, which was for intense sequences of sci-fi violence and action throughout, and a mild drug reference. Sounds like there may be a little more destruction and -- oh, la, la -- some suggestive comments. This week's bulletin also has a PG-13 rating for Cameron Crowe's new movie Aloha starring Bradley Cooper and Emma Stone and we also have a PG-13 for Before We Go, directed by and starring Avengers star Chris Evans and Star Trek Into Darkness co-star Alice Eve. Nancy Meyers has a new movie coming this year called The Intern starring Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway...

Jupiter Ascending has launched in Australia with $2 million in four days on 415 screens, one of the more respectable debuts for the sci-fi action-adventure.
.The Warner Bros/Village Roadshow Pictures film starring Channing Tatum, Mila Kunis, Eddie Redmayne and Sean Bean has brought in $US39.5 million in the Us and $75 million internationally.
That's a long way short of recouping the production cost reported to be between $175 million and $205 million, and the hefty P&A bill.
So Jupiter Ascending is shaping as yet another misfire for siblings Andy and Lana Wachowski following WB/Vrp.s Speed Racer ($120 million budget, $93.9 million in global B.O.) and the independently-financed Cloud Atlas ($100 million cost, $130.5 million B.O.).

It comes as no surprise that Sam Taylor-Johnson.s controversial Fifty Shades of Grey topped the Australian box office on the weekend, raking in $10,381,648 across 270 screens.
The film, adapted from E.L. James. best-selling book of the same name, follows the plight of literature student Anastacia (Dakota Johnson) who falls in love with the handsome but tormented Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan) who .likes to exercise control in all things. . including over her.
The film, distributed by Universal, has had extensive media coverage as its content divides camps to the extent where some women.s groups have called for boycotts. Add this to a prolonged and no doubt costly marketing campaign, even those who have no desire to see the film will likely still be aware that it.s on.

★★★★☆ The debut feature from BBC veterans Andy Hamilton and Guy Jerkin, What We Did on Our Holiday is one of 2014's most big-hearted, surprising and thoroughly likable films. While in many ways essentially the big screen version of an acclaimed, subtly developed sitcom - In this case, Outnumbered - it skips around the traps that befell the likes of The Inbetweeners (2011) or The Simpsons Movie (2007). Those films most resembled out of control episodes of their parent television shows, where jokes were allowed to repeat, fester and wear thin on even thinner story arcs. This feature uses allows the themes of the show to crystallise; the writers pushing the boundaries of the classic British family film.

The head of Lionsgate in the UK, Zygi Kamasa, has called for a more flexible pricing systems for cinemas, in particular to help push demand for British movies.
Arguing that "exhibitors have to do something drastic in 2015 and beyond to counter the decline in admissions", Kamasa questioned "why is Marvel's Avengers, for example, the same price as a film such as What We Did On Our Holiday?"
He argued that in many other industries, the end retail price of a product is directly related to how much it cost to produce. But in film? Exclusive: Lionsgate UK CEO calls for cheaper ticket prices for British films.
Lionsgate UK CEO Zygi Kamasa has called for greater flexibility of cinema ticket-pricing, as a way to stimulate admissions and increase demand for British films.
“Exhibitors have to do something drastic in 2015 and beyond to counter the decline in admissions,” he told ScreenDaily.
“One way to do this could be to implement more price flexibility. Why is Marvel’s Avengers, for example, the same price as a film such as What We Did On Our Holiday?”
Cost of production
“In most other industries, retail price is related to the cost of production, but not in the film business,” he continued.
“A blockbuster can cost $250m and a UK independent film can cost $4m but it’s £10 or more to see both. I think we should see UK films priced at £4 and Us films at £10. A trip to the cinema isn’t cheap anymore.

Rosamund Pike, the star of the highly anticipated film, Gone Girl, is about to get a lot of attention for her standout role as Amy Elliott Dunne, a disillusioned housewife who suddenly disappears on her fifth wedding anniversary. The part is one intense (and showy) role, and will surely stick with audiences well after the end credits stop rolling.
With all the buzz coming her way, it’s a good time to get to know the 35-year-old English actress making a big splash Stateside.
She’s a Bond Girl
While this is definitely her biggest role, it’s hardly her first. The actress’ first big screen part was Miranda Frost, a villainous Bond Girl in Pierce Brosnan’s final James Bond film Die Another Day. She was the 68th actress to be featured as a woman who finds herself entangled with the famed British spy.

With British sitcom Outnumbered, creators Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin hit on the wonderful idea of keeping their hilarious and often realistic portrayal of family life semi-imporovisational, with the adult actors working from the script while the children were given last minute instructions by the writers before each take. For their debut as a big screen directing duo, the pair carry the formula over with What We Did On Our Holiday, and while it's not entirely perfect, for the most part it works. This could have easily been an Outnumbered movie, but with that story told on the small screen, we get a new family, made of David Tennant's and Rosamund Pike's constantly battling Doug and Abi, and their three moppets who watch on distraught from the sidelines, unable to fully comprehend why their parents live in separate houses. When they travel to Scotland to celebrate Doug's ill...

If you're expecting Outnumbered The Movie from What We Did On Our Holiday, then think again, says Mark...
As the child stars of BBC One's Outnumbered grow older and thus less deserving of our attention, series creators Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin have come up with an elegant and surprising solution to what surely must be a high demand at BBC Films for their show to follow Mrs Brown and The Inbetweeners from small screen acclaim to big box office returns.
While we bade farewell to the Brockmans at the end of the 2014 series, Hamilton and Jenkin's début feature, What We Did On Our Holiday, looks for all the world to be re-fitting their dysfunctional family shtick for the big screen. That it actually turns out to be something more unexpected might be worth the price of admission alone.

The team behind What We Did On Our Holiday tell us about the film, fake motorways, and the art of voicework in Peppa Pig...
What We Did On Our Holiday is the feature debut from the brains behind Outnumbered, Guy Jenkin and Andy Hamilton. It's a bold film, that stars David Tennant, Billy Connolly and Rosamund Pike. And we got to spend some time with the pair to chat about the movie. Here's how the conversation went...
I've just been reading about your film on the BBFC website. The extended guidance it gives to parents is as worth a look as always, but it did get me thinking if you had a family audience in mind when you wrote the film? And did you have to tune anything with the BBFC?
Gj: We haven't been in any negotiation! We don't really think about positioning the film when we're writing it.

Directors: Andy Hamilton, Guy Jenkin; Screenwriters: Andy Hamilton, Guy Jenkin; Starring: David Tennant, Rosamund Pike, Billy, Connolly, Emilia Jones, Bobby Smalldridge, Harriet Turnbull, Ben Miller; Running time: 95 mins; Certificate: 12A
Rosamund Pike is about to hit it big thanks to Gone Girl, but before that she'll be seen in What We Did On Our Holiday, an off-kilter family comedy from the creators of Outnumbered. With its story of a marriage under strain, media storm and dramatic mid-point twist, it could easily be paired up with David Fincher's thriller for a slightly eccentric double-bill.
Holiday is proof of the adage 'never judge a book by its cover'. Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin's movie is not the film its trailer makes it out to be, it's a lot more surprising and ambition than the sedate fare you'd expect based on the promos. This is a comedy that turns its clichéd...

We chat to Billy Connolly about What We Did On Our Holiday, Judi Dench, hot fillings, X-Files, Sean Bean and more...
The incoming British comedy drama, What We Did On Our Holiday, boasts a terrific ensemble cast. But perhaps the standout is Billy Connolly. He takes on the role of Gordy in the film, primarily working with the film's young cast. And on a British Monday morning, we found ourselves opposite an apparently jetlagged Billy Connolly, sipping away at his tea, and in fine form. Here's how our chat went...
Nice to meet you.
Consider yourself met!
I've been told that to knock you off kilter for the rest of the interview that I should ask you something random right at the start. So: have microwave ovens been a good thing for modern cooking?
Nooooo! No! It's been crap! They can't handle pastry. It's its great failing!
It's true. Plus...

Final Update, Monday, 2:12 Pm: The fall season is off to a good start, thanks to Fox’s The Maze Runner which opened nicely to $32.5M for the three-day weekend. The next installment of the film, The Maze Runner 2: Scorch Trials, is already set to bow September 18, 2015. While Fox has created another franchise for the industry, Liam Neeson and Universal weren’t so lucky with A Walk Among The Tombstones. The picture didn’t appeal to the female audience — that same demo which helped Non-Stop open to $28.8M earlier this year for the actor. Tombstones ends this weekend with $12.7M. This Is Where I Leave You opened to mediocre numbers after having a less than expected Sunday. It will take in only $11.5M for Warner Bros.
Speaking of franchises, Sony and Denzel Washington hope to launch one next weekend with The Equalizer and those of us who have seen it believe it will happen.

Rosamund Pike might be poised to shoot into the stratosphere with David Fincher's Gone Girl, but before that she'll be seen opposite David Tennant in What We Did On Our Holiday.
The family comedy comes from Outnumbered creators Guy Jenkin and Andy Hamilton, and brings the spirit of the BBC sitcom to the big screen with Pike and Tennant playing parents taking their kids up to Scotland for grandpa Gordy's (Billy Connolly) birthday.
Speaking to Digital Spy, Pike revealed that it was Jenkin and Hamilton's script's ability to tap into the "magic of childhood" that convinced her to jump on board.
"You do start off on a story you think you've got a handle on, then it just goes to these extraordinary places," Pike said of the comedy, which surprises with a bittersweet blend of humour, warmth and tragedy.
"I like the fact it's a film where the adults...

Billy Connolly has said that he believes Robin Williams may have "tried to say goodbye" during a phone conversation before his death.
The comedian told The Daily Telegraph that the recently-deceased actor called him to tell him that he loved him.
"[Robin] was my pal," he said. "He was not always depressed. He was a complicated man, but a beautiful person. He was a joy."
He added that the pair used to discuss Parkinson's disease, which they both suffered from.
"We used to talk about Parkinson's a lot," Connolly added. "He would call me and we would compare notes.
"His was early on-set, the same as mine. Everybody worries about it. It's like a mugger following you around."
Connolly said that Williams had phoned him to tell him how much he loved him shortly before he died.
"We told each other we loved each other," Connelly said. "I told him and he told me many times.
