They hadn’t even gotten that popular yet when their first CD landed, but it wasn’t too long after that they managed to capture the attention of music fans everywhere. The main draw at first was Dave Grohl since he formed it as a one-man band initially before forming the group that would eventually be seen as one of Seattle’s greatest bands ever. 5. Debuting 35 years after the original, Blade Runner 2049 hopes to get October off to a good start on the heels of record numbers this past September. And while the sci-fi drama is looking for big numbers, Fox is delivering some counter-programming in the survival story The Mountain Between Us, Lionsgate is releasing the animated feature My Little Pony and Focus expands the release of Victoria and Abdul nationwide. Blade Runner 2049 and its reported, $150 million price tag, will debut in 4,058 North American theaters (third widest all-time) this weekend while Sony and partner Alcon Entertainment will deliver the film worldwide. Industry expectations are for a $100 million debut globally, with approximately 50% of that coming from the domestic opening as industry forecasts range from $45-55 million. From a comparison standpoint, focusing on films such as Mad Max: Fury Road and Prometheus make good sense given the 30 years between films in the Mad Max...

A guitar-playing Tibetan mastiff must prove himself in this shonky, haphazard animation that clearly couldn’t afford to get Jack Black involved
This makeweight, narratively haphazard digimation synthesises Kung Fu Panda and School of Rock, without going to the expense of hiring Jack Black. Guitar-toting Tibetan mastiff Bodi’s protection of a mountain sheep community proceeds via riffs and lifts: a furry Zootropolis-like menagerie, a robot knock-off of Wall-e and a Poundland reduction of the Sing songbook. (A few seconds of Foo Fighters and – unexpectedly – Radiohead is all we get.)
Going solo with shaky material, ex-Pixar man Ash Brannon (Toy Story 2) composes the odd amusing sight gag, but homogenises his notionally eastern backdrop terribly: compared with the artistry of last year’s Kubo and the Two Strings, Rock Dog is like the hastily assembled toy in a Happy Meal.

Blending the coming-of-age formula with a musical journey makes for a fitting collaboration. During those formative years, when we as teenagers attempt to discover exactly who we are and how we fit into this world, our own quest is often enriched, and illustrated by a soundtrack, as our change in mentality and outlook is matched by our musical choices, constantly discovering new sounds, bands and artists that change our own perception of the world we inhabit. Then there’s the social element, epitomised in Almost Famous – in how this art-form brings us together with other likeminded individuals – and this is what lays down the foundations for Ash Brannon’s animation Rock Dog to thrive off, steeped in relatable themes. Only difference is, our protagonist is a dog.

1) “I Am Not Your Negro” (Available May 2)
Raoul Peck’s documentary about the life and work of James Baldwin is a stunning tribute to the writer’s vital work. Even thirty years after his death, Baldwin’s words still cut to the heart of issues confronting American society. With performances of Baldwin’s writing from narrator Samuel L. Release dates are sometimes more interesting than their movies.
The simple answer for how a movie like The Boss Baby opens at number one is that it’s a major studio animated feature debuting in late March. Specific to this movie, however, there are certain special circumstances, like Beauty and the Beast finally dropping enough to give something else a shot and Ghost in the Shell being a flop, possibly due to its whitewashing casting controversy and possibly just due to its just not being very good.
March is a tricky month for movie releases. With Easter having an unfixed date falling either in March or April, there’s sometimes a holiday weekend, albeit not one typically known for moviegoing. Also, much of America’s children have a spring break, yet there’s no uniformity from county to county within any given state let alone across the country (many states and school districts also wait until April...

For many years, filmmaker Ry Russo-Young was hustling on the indie circuit both as an actor and as a writer/director with her well-received second movie You Won’t Miss Me famously not being released until nearly two years after it premiered at Sundance. Its release was predicated on by winning the less-than-coveted Gotham Award for “Best Film Not Playing at a Theater Near You.” (It actually beat La La Land director Damian Chazelle’s first movie for that award, too!)
Her fourth movie Before I Fall, adapted from Lauren Oliver’s popular young adult novel, is a giant step forward for Russo-Young in terms of tackling someone else’s material and a movie she didn’t write.
It stars Zoey Deutch (Everybody Wants Some) as Samantha Kingston, a typical high school student who hangs out with the popular girls, who are constantly tormenting a strange classmate named Juliet Sykes...

These days, it feels like a director returning to do another installment of a comic book movie is a rarity, but that’s especially true for James Mangold, whose teaming with Hugh Jackman for 2013’s The Wolverine was quite a departure for a filmmaker who had already made a legit Western (3:10 to Zuma) and an Oscar-winning film (Walk the Line).
What Mangold did in The Wolverine, as far as dealing with that character’s history in Japan, Logan does with “Old Man Logan,” which was also meant to be the very last Wolverine story. The film follows Logan, Patrick Stewart’s now somewhat senile Charles Xavier, and a young girl named Laura (Dafne Keen), who has a lot in common with Logan, on a journey to find the girl a safe haven as one of the few mutants in a world where most of them have already been wiped out.

2017-02-27T06:52:38-08:00Weekend Box Office: 'Get Out' Has Great Opening Weekend
Jordan Peele's horror satire Get Out outperformed expectations this weekend to win the first-place spot with ease. With a weekend take of $30.5 million, the film grossed half again as much as even the most enthusiastic predictions, and it left all other competing films in the dust.
The second-place film, The Lego Batman Movie, was the only other movie to take in more than $10 over the weekend. It earned $19 million and took unchallenged possession of second place. The animated family film had been the number-one movie for each of the past two weekends.
For those two past weekends, the second-place film had been Fifty Shades Darker, but that movie faded significantly this weekend, earning just $7.7 million and dropping to fifth place. Hold-overs John Wick: Chapter 2 and The Great Wall moved past...

For the second time this year, a Blumhouse Production tops the Top Ten, as “Get Out” (Universal) scored $30 million this weekend, which is six times its production cost. The tremendous success of “Get Out” on Oscar weekend is significant for two reasons.
Oscar weekend box office often provides an ironic counterpoint to mainstream box office. This year, though, is a little different. For one thing, three of the Best Picture nominees (“Hidden Figures,” “La La Land” and “Lion”) are in the Top Ten, while three other Best Picture nominees are in the Top 20, despite being at the end of long runs.

Blumhouse's Get Out, the Jordan Peele horror/comedy/social commentary, parlayed its glowing critical reception for a stunning $30.5 million Oscar weekend in 2,781 theaters and a very respectable $10,976 per-screen average. The other new films, Lionsgate/Summit's animated flick, Rock Dog, at $3.7 million, fell just outside of the top 10, while the critically-derided inanimate Collide, from Open Road, spun out at $1.53 million in 2,045 theaters for an abysmal $753 per theater.Get Out, a film where an African-American man notices his girlfriend's family estate may be hiding a sinister secret, had a surprise sneak premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, which set the stage for its critical success. The film maintains a rare 100% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, a healthy 8.1 IMDb rating and an A- on CinemaScore. That means the horror film should see an easy falloff next weekend even as the Groundhog Day Ya film, Before I Fall, and the final Hugh Jackman Wolverine film,...

Actress Mae Whitman didn’t hesitate when she had a chance to lend her voice to the new animated film, Rock Dog.
“My mom is a voice-over artist, so I grew up around that,” the actress tells People in this week’s issue. “It’s such a fun environment and always feels like home.”
The Parenthood alum says she loves working on animated films because “it doesn’t matter how you look. You get to go in your sweat pants. And it’s really nice to connect with kids, especially when the message is great.”

You don’t get a lot of animated features that sneak up on you these days, but the marketing promotion for Rock Dog seems to have been drowned out by award season buzz over the last few months. With no connection to something you already know, and an odd-sounding plot, the film hasn’t managed nearly enough attention recently, but some new clips will hopefully change that.
The film revolves around the Tibetan Mastiffs who protect Snow Mountain from wolves. Life is rather simple for the dogs, until one day Bodi (Luke Wilson) finds a radio and decides that he wants to be a rock-and-roll star. From there, the story wanders a familiar road that involves chasing dreams, defying fathers, and exploring beyond the world you know, but if these latest nuggets can be believed, it brings it all together rather well.

Something was evidently lost in translation where the blandly rendered Rock Dog is concerned. An adaptation of the graphic novel, Tibetan Rock Dog by Zheng Jun, this draggy, computer-animated feature exhibits neither bark nor bite in its portrayal of a sheep-guarding, guitar-playing Himalayan mastiff who has his head perpetually in the clouds.
Coming after the film’s Chinese release last summer, which disappointed its 14 executive producers by bringing in less than 10 percent of its $60 million budget, the Americanized version, with a voice cast including Luke Wilson, Eddie Izzard, J.K. Rock Dog is the latest collaborative film from studios in China and the Us. Did anyone working on the cheap-looking animated film Rock Dog ever stop to consider the fact that the dog of the title never rocks? He fights a grizzly bear in a cage match. He harnesses ancestral magic powers. He leaves behind his Himalayan-looking mountain village for the big city after a radio falls out of the clouds. He learns a lesson about… something. (This last point is fuzzy.) Those might qualify as “rock ’n’ roll” in a different context—well, perhaps not the part about learning a lesson. But rocking out in any widely accepted sense of the term? The dog doesn’t as much as plug in an electric guitar. There is a scene where he trudges around in the rain to Radiohead’s “No Surprises,” which is commonly considered a rock song, and while it’s a very strange moment for an otherwise unremarkable kids’ movie, it isn...

Rock Dog is not one of those crossover hits that parents can enjoy just as much as their kids. Far from it. Uninvolving, unfunny and visually inferior to its peers, Rock Dog is a straight-to-dvd production at best. How it managed to sneak its way onto the big-screen, we may never know. Luke Wilson provides the voice of Bodi, a Mastiff introduced on Snow Mountain in Tibet. His job is guarding the wool-spinning sheep there from a nasty pack of wolves led by Linnux (Lewis Black). To avoid distractions, Mastiff leader (and Bodi’s dad) Khampa (J.K. Simmons) forbids all music from the mountain. But when a radio is dropped by a passing airplane, Bodi decides he wants to be a rock ‘n’ roll star. Defying his father’s wishes, he heads to the Zootopia-like big city, and finds the reclusive cat rock legend Angus Scattergood (Eddie Izzard), who needs a new song fast.

Don’t get too excited, geologists: “Rock Dog” isn’t about an animal into minerals. It’s music that stirs the mountain mastiff in this sweet if ineffectual animated movie, purportedly the first instance of a Chinese animation property — an adaptation of Zheng Jun’s graphic novel “Tibetan Rock Dog” — outsourcing its production to America (“Free Birds” studio Reel FX). With obvious nods to the melding of Eastern and Western cultures, and a hoped-for international appeal, the result is a low-key, simple — very, very simple — story of pursuing one’s dreams (and protecting sheep and foiling wolves) that never exactly soars.

With its combination of horror and racial commentary, “Get Out” (Universal) is the best bet to lead the Top 10 this weekend. With a chance to be not only a hit but also a game-changer, it looks like both a breakout for first-time director Jordan Peele and yet another winner for producer Jason Blum.
The timing on Oscar weekend, particularly in the aftermath of #oscarssowhite, is fortuitous, and it moves into release with a whopping 100% on Rotten Tomatoes after 85 reviews. Horror maven Jason Blum is also an Oscar-nominated producer (“Whiplash”) as well as the force behind M. Might Shyamalan’s “Split,” the first film of 2017 to gross over $100 million domestic.
“Get Out,” as befits its origins from comic actor/writer Jordan Peele (who stays behind the camera), is a mix of humor and horror in its tale of an interracial couple meeting her wealthy liberal white parents for the first time.

There are few producers who have had the overwhelming success of Jason Blum and his Blumhouse Productions from their early days turning Oren Peli’s low-budget Paranormal Activity into a hugely profitable franchise, followed by the equally successful Insidious and The Purge movies. Jason Blum also has an Oscar nomination notched onto his career belt for his involvement in getting Damien Chazelle’s Oscar-nominated Whiplash made, and Blumhouse were involved with bringing Jem and the Holograms to movie theaters. (Sorry, but I actually kind of liked it, even though it bombed… big time.)
Jordan Peele’s directorial debut Get Out will be the third time Blumhouse has worked with an actor making their transition into directing, as Jason Blum handled the same duties on Joel Edgerton’s The Gift and Leigh Whannell’s Insidious: Chapter 3 a few years back.

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
Presidents' Day weekend was an interesting one at the box office, and as with most holiday weekends, it was particularly difficult to figure out how things might fare, other than The Lego Batman Movie, which remained at #1 with almost $45 million over the four-day weekend. Fifty Shades Darker followed with $21.3 million, about a 50% drop. Last week, I thought that the Ice Cub comedy Fist Fight would beat The Great Wall, although it seemed like it could be a close race. Nope. Matt Damon’s action epic came in third place with $21.6 million, which is a couple million more than my original prediction, but The Fist Fight fell short of my prediction by almost $10 million, grossing $14.5 million in its first four days.

2017-02-22T07:19:21-08:00New Movies February 24: Horror, Action and a Chinese Dog
If you thought last week's new movies flew under the radar of most moviegoers, wait until this coming weekend. Of the three new wide releases this week, only one is expected to get much attention from a wide audience.
Of the week's new movies, the most likely to succeed is Get Out, a horror movie from director Jordan Peele (of Key & Peele). The film is getting broadly positive reviews, but it's also got a pretty low profile going into the weekend. An opening-weekend take of $20 million or more isn't out of the question, and the movie has a good shot at taking the number-one spot away from The Lego Batman Movie.
The week's second new wide release, the action flick Collide, isn't like to do as well. It stars Felicity Jones (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story...

Our very own Edward Douglas was able to catch an advanced viewing of Logan, and according to his review, it is fantastic. One thing that I did wonder, were how the post-credit scenes would be done, and if there were any at all. The critics did not get to witness any bonus scene but Steve "Frosty" Weintraub at Collider is not only giving our Joseph "Jammer" Medina a run for his nickname, but he also has confirmed that there will be a post-credit scene at some point during the credits.
"While the version of the film screened for critics had no such thing, over the past few days word has begun to spread that Logan might have a scene added after the credits when it hits theaters. Forget about the rumors…I can confirm it’s true. When Logan is released on March 3rd it’ll have a post-credits scene.

After many years establishing himself as a comedian--first on Mad TV and then teaming with that show’s Keegan--Michael Key for the equally successful Comedy Central show Key and Peele--Jordan Peele has decided to go behind the camera to make his directorial debut with the horror-thriller Get Out.
It stars Daniel Kaluuya (Sicario) as Chris Washington, whose girlfriend Rose Armitage (Allison Williams of Girls) wants to take their relationship to the next level by having him meet her parents, who she hasn’t told that her boyfriend is black. At first, it doesn’t seem to matter, but as they spend the weekend together at her parent’s remote house, they’re joined by family friends who are acting equally oddly around Chris. As Chris tries to figure out what is happening, he is led down a dark path towards something quite malevolent and deadly.

It was fun seeing Keanu Reeves and Lawrence Fishburne on screen together again in John Wick 2, and it does seem that Reeves is making himself a comeback with this new franchise. However, his biggest franchise is that of The Matrix, and even though the last two movies were not received as well as the original, it was still a fun ride for many fans.
At the end of Matrix 3: Revolutions, Reeves sacrificed his life to give peace to the survivors of the machine, and give everyone a happy ending, seemingly ending the trilogy for good. However, there was a small shred of hope in the last scene when The Oracle (Mary Alice) was asked by Sati (Tanveer K. Atwal):
"Will we ever see him again?" to which she replied, "I suspect so. Someday."

Over the past few weeks I have talked about how Supergirl may have gotten a little cheesy with the over use of unnecessary heroes. Over the past few days, we have had quite a few Namor, aka The Sub-Mariner, rumors, including the potential for him to have his own film. This rumor by Reel News Hawaii insinuated that both Aquaman and some untitled project are being shot near the same location.
Fans have caught on to this, and while the status of Namor has been in limbo for decades due to fine print in various contracts, it does appear at least now that Marvel has his rights. So, instantly a petition has gone out for a casting of this ultra powered anti-hero, and at the forefront is Donnie Yen. The Lego Batman Movie topped the weekend box office for a second week in a row, holding off a trio of newcomers led by Universal's The Great Wall. Fellow new releases, Fist Fight and particularly Fox's A Cure for Wellness, fizzled in their respective debuts as the start of 2017's Presidents' Day weekend saw the top twelve come in 47% behind last year. While that was mostly to be expected, it's a rather significant dip as 2017 is currently pacing 10.4% behind 2016's yearly grosses. With an estimated $34.2 million, WB's The Lego Batman Movie finished #1 by a considerable margin, dropping 35.4% and raising its domestic cume to $98.7 million after ten days in release. The film should top $43 million for the four-day weekend, pushing it over $100 million by end of day Monday. Internationally, Lego Batman is up to $72 million after bringing in an estimated $21.5 million from 62 markets this weekend elevating its worldwide total over $170 million.

The Lego Batman Movie won the weekend as expected, but not with nearly as much money as I had predicted, not besting the opening of The Lego Movie as expected, but instead ending up with a reasonable and not so bad $53 million. Fifty Shades Darker proved that the audience for movies based on the popular books was still great enough for it to win Friday with $21 million (to Lego Batman’s $15 million) and end up second for the weekend with a strong $46.6 million. That was still almost $40 million less than the opening of the previous movie Fifty Shades of Grey, but the sequel also didn’t have the benefits of Valentine’s Day and a four-day holiday. It was the best weekend at the 2017 box office so far, led by WB's The Lego Batman Movie along with fellow newcomers Fifty Shades Darker and John Wick: Chapter Two topping the box office in that order. But along with the new releases, five of the weekend's holdovers, especially Lion, held on extremely well, dropping 35% or less compared to last weekend. Overall the weekend top twelve came in just a fraction below our overall expectation of $180 million as the top twelve combined for an estimated $176.9 million. At #1, WB's second film in their Lego franchise, The Lego Batman Movie, delivered an estimated $55.6 million, which is well below Mojo's forecast and even a bit below the $60 million the studio was expecting. However, opening day audiences gave the film a strong "A-" CinemaScore, which plays well with the strong critical reception the film received. Of that audience, 48% were males vs. 52% females and 48% were...

Sometimes musical inspiration comes from the sky.
Summit Premiere released character posters for the upcoming animated movie Rock Dog.
The film has an all-star voice cast that includes Luke Wilson, Eddie Izzard, J.K. Simmons, Lewis Black, Kenan Thompson and Mae Whitman. It’s directed by Ash Brannon, who previously directed Surf’S Up and Toy Story 2. The screenplay is written by Brannon and Kurt Voelker.
Here’s the full synopsis:
For the Tibetan Mastiffs living on Snow Mountain, a dog’s life has a simple riff: Guard a peaceful village of wool-making sheep from the thuggish wolf Linnux (Black) and his rabid pack. To avoid distractions, Mastiff leader Khampa (Simmons) forbids all music from the mountain. But when Khampa’s son Bodi (Wilson) discovers a radio dropped by a passing airplane, it takes just a few guitar licks for his fate to be sealed: Bodi wants to be a rock ‘n’ roll star.
