The 2007 John C. Reilly comedy Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story has become a cult hit in recent years, largely as a result of the skill with which it dissects and eviscerates the genre it satirizes.
The film so deftly laid bare the tropes and cliches of the rock star biopic that many predicted it would forever change the way filmmakers approached stories about dead celebs.
And for a while, it seemed like the trick had worked.
Leaving aside for a moment any discussion about the quality of these films, there's no denying that Elvis, Blonde, Maestro, Jackie, Priscilla, and Oppenheimer all offered new takes on a very familiar subgenre.
(That last one, admittedly, is a bit of an outlier, as we're not sure if a theoretical physicist -- even one who altered the course of world history -- can properly be called a celebrity.)
But in recent years, the...

It’s 2024 and we are officially at the point in time where major blockbusters of the modern era have influenced some of our favorite actors to enter the business. For Timothée Chalamet, that movie was Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, released in 2008 when Chalamet was just 12 years old.
Speaking with The New York Times, Chalamet recalled, “The movie that made me want to act is a superhero movie, The Dark Knight.” Interestingly, he has yet to star in a superhero movie of his own. This may be due to part of the advice he once received from one of Nolan’s former collaborators, Leonardo DiCaprio: “No superhero movies, no hard drugs.” (Chalamet actually had a small role in Nolan’s Interstellar.)
But that doesn’t mean Chalamet would never suit up for a superhero movie, saying it all depends on the material. “If the script was great, if the director was great,...

For a time, it seemed like an auteur war was about to break out over Adam Sandler, with some of America’s most revered directors vying to find the right role for the comedian. It was rumored, but never confirmed, that Quentin Tarantino imagined him a key role while writing Inglourious Basterds, although this might have been wishful thinking from critics who saw the talented Sandler heading in the same direction as John Travolta until Pulp Fiction saved him from a lifetime of Look Who’s Talking movies. In the end, Paul Thomas Anderson got there first, with Punch Drunk Love (2002), although the glow of a bona fide arthouse hit didn’t last long, and Jack and Jill still happened less than ten years later.
Nevertheless, though he returned to the fanbase, Sandler has always been good in serious supporting roles, even in films that don’t broadly work, like...

Timothee Chalamet has quickly emerged as one of the more unique Hollywood leading men in recent years. With his lanky frame, brooding vigor and deeply felt sensitivity, the young man has become one of the most notable stars of his generation. His career began in TV movies and series, with recurring roles on such shows as “Homeland” and “Royal Pains.” He made his film debut in the Jason Reitman film “Men, Women & Children,” in a relatively minor part. Those smaller roles continued through 2016 in films like “Interstellar” and “The Adderall Diaries,” playing younger versions of principal characters.
While Chalamet had a handful of substantial roles in indie movies, like 2016’s “Miss Julie,” everything changed the following year with the release of “Call Me by Your Name.” The actor’s sensitive portrayal of a 17-year-old finding his first great love garnered universal praise and landed him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor.

It seems Hollywood truly is a small world. On July 20, the unlikeliest of celebrity friendships - Adam Sandler and Timothée Chalamet - were spotted playing basketball in New York City. Casually engaging in a game of pickup, the (very sweaty) actors dribbled, passed, shot hoops, and exchanged fist bumps among a group of friends. Who knew these two were buddies?
In true Adam Sandler fashion, the 56-year-old actor wore a gray T-shirt that hilariously said, "Let me ask my wife." Twenty-seven-year-old Chalamet also matched in casual shorts and a tee, though we're guessing they didn't plan on coordinating. While many fans were initially confused by the seemingly random pairing, others were excited to see the two interacting. "I'd pay for courtside seats [though,] I'm so serious," one Twitter user joked.

Amazon Prime Video has popped off with plenty of new content for March 2023 with original shows and some great catches for films to stream. “Top Gun: Maverick” will arrive March 24, and Jordan Peele’s “Nope” before that on March 21. Jordan will become available at the beginning of March along with all of the “Rocky” films as well as “Cinderella Man” for the broader boxing buff community. A theatrical release from 2022, “The Silent Twins,” starring Letitia Wright and Tamara Lawrence arrives March 7.
Friday March 3 will see “Daisy Jones & The Six” rock the world when the band’s epic limited series comes out. With its list of new releases for March 2023, Amazon Prime Video might be rolling out its most impressive monthly lineup yet.
We know that sounds like something straight out of a press release but in this case, it’s actually true! Prime Video, bless it, has some excellent original titles like The Boys and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, but its monthly release updates have often been less inspiring than its TV peers. That’s certainly not the case with March 2023 though.
Prime Video gets its streaming party started early by premiering the first three episodes of Daisy Jones & The Six on March 3. This series, based on a book of the same name, tells the fictional Behind the Music-esque story of an equally fictional band. Then, on March 17, Amazon’s partnership with Donald Glover bears its first fruit with the series about obsessive fandom called Swarm. Reggie Jackson documentary Reggie premieres...

March is still winter, no matter which animal you ask, which means it’s still completely acceptable to cancel all plans and curl up under a blanket in front of the TV. Prime Video’s movie library updates throughout the month, with most of its new additions on March 1 — including the “Rocky” saga, multiple “Carrie” adaptations, “12 Angry Men,” and more.
For Prime users who love books and TV, March means the highly-anticipated premiere of “Daisy Jones & the Six,” based on the best-selling novel by Taylor Jenkins Reid. The eponymous Daisy (Riley Keough) and Billy Dunne’s band (Sam Claflin) make a mean match, starting with a hit single and leading to what seems like endless fame and glory. But where there is success there is peril, and both the band’s rise and an electric connection with Daisy threaten Billy’s marriage and everyone’s personal lives. James Ponsoldt,...

It seems that every few years, there’s another filmmaker attempting to offer some form of half-hearted commentary on our society’s increased use of the digital devices that seem destined to enslave us all; from the one-two punch of 2013’s dismal “Disconnect” and “Men, Women & Children” the following year to practically every episode of “Black Mirror,” the line on the graph labeled “Quality” tends to ebb and flow with all the frequency of a neglected version of Angry Birds or any number of brightly-colored iPad apps children play that adults can’t even begin to understand.

Exclusive: Judy Greer will star in Disney’s sequel to Stargirl.
The movie, which is in development from the Disney live action division, will stream on Disney+.
Greer will play the role of Ana opposite returning star Grace VanderWaal who plays Stargirl. VanderWaal will write and perform original music as well.
Julia Hart is coming back to direct, and she’ll be writing the sequel’s screenplay again with husband Jordan Horowitz. The duo adapted the original screenplay on the first movie with Kristin Hahn off Jerry Spinelli’s best-selling book of the same name.
The sequel will follow Stargirl’s journey out of Mica and into a bigger world of music. I understand that Ana is Stargirl’s mother and the duo will be moving to Los Angeles, where the latter is working on a film. Elijah Richardson will play the romantic lead Evan who is Stargirl’s new neighbor and an aspiring writer.

Warner Bros.’ upcoming “Dune” adaptation offers moviegoers the chance to see the debut collaboration between Denis Villeneuve and Timothée Chalamet, but it turns out the science-fiction tentpole is not the first time the director and the actors’ paths have crossed. In a new GQ cover story, Villeneuve reveals he turned down casting Chalamet in his 2013 kidnapping thriller “Prisoners.” Even better, Villeneuve forgot Chalamet auditioned for the movie when they met years later for “Dune.”
As GQ reports: “When they met to discuss [‘Dune’], Villeneuve told Timothée how happy he was to finally meet the young actor. And Timothée had to remind him that they’d met before, when Timothée read for Villeneuve’s ‘Prisoners.’ ‘Of course!,’ Villeneuve remembered. ‘He did a great audition, but he didn’t physically fit the part. A version of this story on Kaitlyn Dever first appeared in the Limited Series & Movies issue of TheWrap Emmy magazine.
When Kaitlyn Dever was a little girl, Hollywood seemed like a simple place. “When I first wanted to do acting, I thought you could just do it and be on the Disney Channel like Christie Carlson Romano and Raven-Simoné,” she said with a laugh from the guest house she occupies behind her parents’ home in Los Angeles. “Those women on the Disney Channel were my idols growing up. There has been a ton of buzz lately around Hollywood sweethearts Timothée Chalamet and Lily-Rose Depp - especially since the two were spotted kissing on a yacht and became a meme (more on that later). Today we are recognizing Beautiful Boy, as well as star Timothée Chalamet. Our Hollywood Film Tributes recognize films and talent for their excellence in the art of filmmaking. In a very short period of time, Timothée Chalamet has become as hot an actor as there is in the field. In demand by top tier filmmakers, Chalamet has shown acting chops, star power, personality, and that X factor which launches a young man into the stratosphere. His turn last year in Call Me By Your Name made him an Oscar nominee, while he also turned heads in the Academy Award nominee Lady Bird. Coming off of small but impactful work in things like Interstellar and Men, Women & Children, he’s now gone to even bigger heights with Beautiful Boy. From our piece on the film (and Chalamet) back in October: Based off of two memoirs by David Sheff and Nic Sheff,...

Even though Timothée Chalamet has become a big actor in recent months, he still has a history of small parts.
It’s part of the journey to success, certainly, but that doesn’t make it any less sad for the 22-year-old actor, who had a minor role in the 2014 blockbuster Interstellar starring Matthew McConaughey.
In a conversation with fellow star Emma Stone, 30, for Variety’s Actors on Actors franchise, which will air on PBS in January, the Call Me By Your Name lead recalled his reaction to watching an early screening of Christopher Nolan’s film with the cast, which...

Chicago – The year 1988 marked a border crossing in the way that the media covered national candidates. Senator Gary Hart seemed destined for president, until a extramarital relationship with Donna Rice became the focus of media attention. Director Jason Reitman tells the story in a new film, “The Front Runner.”

In a remarkable transformation, Hugh Jackman portrays Hart, communicating the dismissal that the candidate had when reacting to the allegations… “Follow me around. I don’t care. I’m serious. If anybody wants to put a tail on me, go ahead. They’d be very bored.” That situation came to pass as the Miami Herald sent reporters and a photographer to stake out Hart’s Washington D.C. town home, and they discovered Donna Rice (Sara Paxton) was there. Hart’s denials of impropriety and...

Timothée Chalamet began appearing on the big screen with brief roles in Jason Reitman's Men, Women & Children and Christopher Nolan's Interstellar before snaring larger roles in indie dramas like One and Two. He caught fire in Hollywood thanks to his trio of acclaimed performances last year in Call Me By Your Name (for which he received a well-deserved Academy Award nomination), Lady Bird and Hostiles. Now he is again receiving plaudits for his sterling performance as a young man dealing with addiction in Beautiful Boy, starring Steve Carell. Based on a true story, the drama opened over the weekend to very positive audience reaction, scoring 90% approval on Rotten Tomatoes as of this writing. What's next for the talented actor? The King Chalamet, who...

We have seen quite a few sides to actress Jennifer Garner. We’ve seen her kick butt in “Alias” and the upcoming “Peppermint.” We’ve seen her tackle serious work in “Dallas Buyers Club” and “Men, Women & Children.” She’s no stranger to feel-good family films like “The Odd Life of Timothy Green.” Hell, we’ve seen Garner put on the tights in superhero films also, albeit they weren’t any good.

Last summer, in IndieWire’s review of “The Meyerowitz Stories,” this critic wrote that “It remains hugely frustrating how great Adam Sandler can be when he’s not making Adam Sandler movies.” If it didn’t seem necessary to hash out the distinction between a movie with Adam Sandler, and an Adam Sandler Movie, that’s only because the difference between the two is ridiculously obvious.
The former category includes fiercely beloved masterpieces like “Punch-Drunk Love” and “Funny People.” The latter category includes minor crimes against humanity like “That’s My Boy” and “Grown Ups 2.” If you see him in something directed by James L. Brooks, someone who idolizes James L. Brooks, or even by someone who’s met James L. Brooks, then you’re probably watching a movie with Adam Sandler. If you see him in something that co-stars David Spade, features a scene where Shaquille O’Neal throws someone over a house,...

It’s been four years since Jason Reitman divided critics with the polarizing “Men, Women & Children,” but there’s nothing a “Young Adult” reunion can’t fix. The Oscar-nominated director returns to the big screen this year with “Tully,” starring Charlize Theron and written by Diablo Cody, who won the Best Original Screenplay Oscar for “Juno.” But while the “Young Adult” reunion is enticing enough, it’s really the chance to see Mackenzie Davis break out even further that has us very excited.

This story first appeared in the Nov. 8 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine. On Oct. 22, Jason Reitman took to Twitter to cast part of his next movie, the dark suburban drama Men, Women & Children, based on a book by lightning-rod novelist Chad Kultgen: "Need help casting my film! Know a teen football player who's a quiet thoughtful giant? See the attached script!" Turns out it may have been less new-media lark, more hint of frustration. THR hears that the director has been having trouble attracting true-to-age talent for the project's several teen roles that involve a lot of sext-ing,
