2024 was going to be the biggest year for Jujutsu Kaisen, as the series featured some of the greatest moments in the history of the manga world. And even though the year is not even close to its end, Gege Akutami’s magnum opus has already reached the top and will probably dominate the industry until the end of the series.

The intriguing thing is that Jujutsu Kaisen was not the only manga that was delivering bangers this year. Keisuke Itagaki did something unexpected when creating Baki Hanma. The series took off like no other, establishing itself as one of the best sports mangas ever. The smooth display of martial arts through both the manga and the anime has fans gripped for decades now. A story that started with the protagonist wanting to become the best in his field, surpassing his own father.

That is not an uncommon trope. Food Wars and Fairy Tail both have similar motivations. In fact, most anime like One Piece, Haikyuu!! and My Hero Academia is driven by the thought of becoming the strongest in their traits. In many ways, all of them stand individually despite their similarities. One plot hole that stands in Baki Hanma, although minor, has a lot to do with Yyujiro Hanma, the protagonist’s father.

Anime is all but defined by the action shonen genre in the eyes of the general public. Much like the box office used to be dominated by superhero movies, the biggest anime tend to be action shonen shows about teenage boys awakening some big power and using the magic of friendship to overcome challenges. This can be a problem when reducing the medium to a single genre for newcomers. Still, after you watch a few shonen, you realize that the ones that stand out and become phenomena are those that take those formulas and tropes and make them their own.
One such anime is "Black Cover," studio Pierrot's adaptation of Yūki Tabata's manga of the same name. The story is set in a world where everyone can use magic, and we follow a boy named Asta who was born without magic — but instead with anti-magic abilities — who nevertheless wants...

Japanese animation studio Bones celebrates its 25th anniversary this year; in commemoration, Crunchyroll assembled the documentary "Bones 25: Dreaming Forward." Broken into four chapters each about the length of an anime episode, the doc features talking head interviews with Bones staff/industry peers highlighting the studio's history and most famous projects.
"Dreaming Forward" doesn't scratch far past the surface, but that's not because it lacks material. In its 25 years, Bones has produced many beloved anime series; its current hit "My Hero Academia" is one of the most popular in the world. Long before that, though, Bones broke out by adapting Hiromu Arakawa's steampunk-action manga "Fullmetal Alchemist."
Set during a fictionalized 20th century in the European-esque country Amestris, the manga centers on two alchemist brothers: Edward Elric and Alphonse Elric. When they were young children, the Elrics lost their mother, Trisha, so they tried to transmute her back to life.

It could be said that shonen anime is typified by its heroes. Whether it’s Yuji Itadori from Jujutsu Kaisen ; Jotaro Kujo from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure ; or the icon himself, Goku of Dragon Ball fame, their exploits have become indelibly linked to the medium. Not every hero is born great, but often we will at least meet them at a stage of their life when they have hidden potential. Take My Hero Academia ’s Izuku Midoriya, for example, whose enthusiasm and passion belies a frail body bereft of natural talent. Related: Recap: Kaiju No. 8 Episode 5, "Joining Up!" If you haven’t noticed, there’s a consistent theme here. All of the abovementioned protagonists are young, ambitious and have their whole lives ahead of them when their adventures begin in earnest. I adore each of them, but I can’t see myself entirely reflected in them, because I am not young,...

The epitome of evil in Jujutsu Kaisen, Ryomen Sukuna, is currently defeating every opponent that the Jujutsu sorcerers are throwing at him. Often, the special ingredient behind a successful villain is a tera-jerker backstory. You can see it in My Hero Academia (Shigaraki), Naruto (Itachi Uchiha), and many other hit anime. Yet, Tite Kubo managed to create one of the biggest anime villains with absolutely no backstory.
