Lance Edmands is finally set to direct his sophomore feature and he’ll have Scoot McNairy, Jack Reynor and Emily Browning‘s moral compasses all misaligned in a L‘Avventura-esque land drama. Deadline don’t give deets on the production start date for Brightwater, but we imagine that this is a summer shoot in Edmands’ beloved Maine. This is produced by Symbolic Exchange’s Joe Pirro and Alex Lipschultz (see our Sundance trading card profile), and James Schamus is joined by Stephen Kelliher and Sophie Green as executive producers. We’re big fans of Edmands’ 2013 debut, Bluebird (read review) — an ensemble drama submerged in collective despondency.…...

Miranda Lambert opened the 55th annual CMA Awards with a medley of five of her hits. It was an agile performance, imbued with the Texas singer’s signature swagger.
Backed by her superb band (always keep an eye on Spencer Cullum Jr. on pedal steel) and dressed in a blue jumpsuit with red fringe that evoked Gram Parsons couture, Lambert lit into her 2005 hit “Kerosene,” the title track of her major-label debut. From there, she jumped six years into the future to the single “Mama’s Broken Heart,” off 2011’s Four the Record.

We'll never get over Miranda Lambert's latest red carpet look. On Nov. 10, the superstar singer arrived to the 2021 CMA Awards in a sleek black Versace dress alongside husband Brendan McLoughlin. Celebrity hairstylist Johnny Lavoy used Hidden Crown Hair seamless clip-in extensions before Lambert walked down the red carpet. "Miranda wore Versace on the CMA red carpet so I wanted to create a sexy look," he told E! News. "Taking inspiration from '90s supermodels." It's an extra special night for the birthday girl, considering Lambert is up for three awards, including Entertainer of the Year. The "Bluebird" artist is nominated for the award...

The 2021 Newport Folk Festival (technically titled “Folk On”) is, for obvious reasons, much different than past installments: Coming off a year of mass tragedy and societal reckoning, this year’s event, ongoing through July 28th, features double the amount of days — six instead of three — reduced capacity, and fewer stages. The first three days were the folkiest in recent memory: more acoustic, more intimate, and more traditionally minded than usual. Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley delivered their timeless Drive-By Trucker tunes as an acoustic duo, Katie Crutchfield performed highlights from her 2020 opus,...

R&b superstars Bruno Mars and Anderson Paak have joined forces to form a duo called Silk Sonic. The single “Leave The Door Open,” off their album “An Evening with Silk Sonic,” has so far been tremendously popular, recently topping the Billboard Hot 100. But while their continued commercial success seems all but certain, one question does remain: what are their Grammy chances? Let’s look at some past supergroups to see how the recording academy has reacted to them and what that might mean for this new dynamic duo.

Maren Morris and Chris Stapleton are the most nominated artists at the 2021 Academy of Country Music Awards, and they’ll also be the biggest winners, according to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users. Morris is predicted to win four awards out of her six nominations. She’s the front-runner for Female Artist of the Year, where she’s the defending champion. “Music’s Biggest Night,” as the Grammy Awards are known, went off without a hitch on Sunday night (March 14). Hosted by Trevor Noah, and produced by a new team led by “James Corden” executive producer Ben Winston, there was an expectation of a more innovative approach and look to an awards show, and the Grammys did not disappoint. Featuring an indoor in-the-round set-up, not unlike Jools Holland’s in the U.K., artists were able to watch each other as they performed — which, considering the lack of live music for the last year, was a rare luxury afforded to the few and mighty. In addition, elaborate pre-taped performances allowed for the spectacle one would want from a music show.

But even though she has been adored by the country music industry at large, winning ACM and CMA Awards hand over fist during the last dozen years, the Grammys have held her at a relative distance, only giving her two prizes out of 18 previous nominations. This year, however, there’s a chance she could sweep.

Elle King and Miranda Lambert have teamed up for the exhilarating new duet “Drunk (And I Don’t Wanna Go Home),” which marks the former tourmates’ second recorded collaboration after the CMA-winning cover of “Fooled Around and Fell in Love.”
King wrote the uptempo “Drunk” with Martin Johnson (who also produced the track) and it was recorded pre-pandemic in Nashville and New York. The song steadily builds anticipation in the verses with syncopated percussion, sustained low-end piano notes, and backing “oohs” to complement King and Lambert’s more aggressive vocal attack.

Just a few months after the 2020 Academy of Country Music Awards were delayed to last September due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the 2021 nominees have been announced. Maren Morris and Chris Stapleton lead with six nominations each. They’re followed by Miranda Lambert with five and Ashley McBryde and Thomas Rhett with four. Though those women earned multiple noms, there are zero women up for Entertainer of the Year, which at this point isn’t too surprising for the ACMs. Scroll down for the complete list of nominees, and find out who wins when the awards are handed out on April 18.
Stapleton contends for the top Entertainer award, which is his third nomination in that category. He’s also up for Male Artist of the Year, Album of the Year for “Starting Over” (nominated as both artist and producer), and Song of the Year for the title track (nominated as both...

Maren Morris and Chris Stapleton emerged as the leading nominees with six each when the nominations for the 56th Academy of Country Music Awards were announced Friday morning.
Morris’ strong showing is due in part to the success of her song “The Bones,” which landed her nominations for Single of the Year and Song of the Year (Morris co-wrote the crossover hit). As an artist, she’s up for Female Artist of the Year and, as a member of the Highwomen, for Group of the Year.

Maren Morris and Chris Stapleton lead the nominations for the 2021 Academy of Country Music Awards with six each, closely trailed by Miranda Lambert with five nods, and Ashley McBryde, Thomas Rhett and producer Jay Joyce with four apiece.
Among those picking up three nominations: Luke Combs, Eric Church, Ingrid Andress, Carly Pearce, Hardy, producer Dann Huff and last year’s telecast host, Keith Urban. Double nominees include Luke Bryan, Gabby Barrett, Brothers Osborne, Kane Brown, producer Dave Cobb and the late producer Busbee.
In the entertainer of the year category, Stapleton, Luke Bryan, Eric Church, Luke Combs and Thomas Rhett will face off. Only Bryan and Rhett have previously won that top prize. Ah, concerts — it’s still tough to believe it’s been nearly a year since most of us attended one with other people, and yet the anniversary of the March shutdown will be here very soon. We thought Luke Combs, The Chicks and The Highwomen would be among top contenders to win 2021 Grammys in the country field, but the recording academy thought differently. The Highwomen only received one nomination, while Combs and The Chicks were shut out entirely. So who will capitalize on their absences? Let’s break down the four categories.

Best Country Solo Performance
This category is a little tricky. At first glance, the obvious winner would be “Bluebird” by Miranda Lambert. It’s by far the biggest hit nominated, Lambert is a past Grammy winner and respected in the industry, and the song also got a Best Country Song nomination. However, looking at past category winners, the biggest hit doesn’t really win that often. More often, this category goes to passion picks, like...

For once, the country music patriarchy is riding shotgun.
Country may be renowned as a genre where the women do not always get a fair shake, but you would not guess that from how the nominations for the 2021 Grammys shook out. Female solo artists or bands with women as primary lead singers accounted for all five of the nominations in the best country album category. Moreover, female-fronted material was awarded four out of five slots in two other categories, best country song and best country solo performance. That 80-to-100% imbalance is, of course, pretty much the exact inverse of what a fan of the music will hear on the airwaves.
If the Grammys were making a statement, the Recording Academy wasn’t just making it in country. There was a similar readjusting of the scales happening in some of the rock categories. For best rock performance, all six nominees are...

Ingrid Andress and Miranda Lambert lead all country music artists at the 2021 Grammy Awards with three nominations each. Andress earned nominations in the Best Country Album and Best Country Song categories, as well as an all-genre nomination for Best New Artist. Lambert’s three noms include Country Album, Country Song, and Best Country Solo Performance.
Andress, a Colorado-raised songwriter, garners her country nominations on the strength of her debut single “More Hearts Than Mine” and her subsequent debut album, Lady Like. In May, the LP became the highest streamed country debut album by a woman.

Who will win the highly competitive country and adult contemporary artist categories at the 2020 American Music Awards? The event is this weekend, so let’s take a look at who’s in contention.
Favorite Country Artist – Male
The favorite to win here is undoubtedly Luke Combs. The country superstar has had a huge 2020, spending multiple weeks atop the Billboard 200 with his sophomore project “What You See Is What You Get,” and notching a string of top-three hits on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, in addition to taking multiple awards at the ACM and CMA Awards. Morgan Wallen and Kane Brown did have successful years too, but Combs might just be too strong to beat.

Almost a half dozen Covid-diagnosed performers couldn’t stop the 2020 Country Music Association Awards from airing on November 11, and they ended in a big surprise. A year after Garth Brooks was so taken aback by winning Entertainer of the Year that he ultimately pulled his name out of consideration, the CMAs once again threw a curveball in the top category. They awarded Eric Church over most-nominated artist Miranda Lambert, Album of the Year champ Luke Combs and ACM Entertainer winner Carrie Underwood. Did that surprise you as much as it surprised the Gold Derby users who predicted the event?

Despite a shuffling performer line-up due to multiple positive tests for Covid-19, the Country Music Association Awards were held on Wednesday at an in-person ceremony at Nashville’s Music City Center.
In the days leading up to the ceremony, four acts — Rascal Flatts, the recently renamed Lady A, Florida Georgia Line and “I Hope You’re Happy Now” singer Lee Brice — were forced to pull out from the show after either being exposed to or testing positive for Covid.
But as they say, the show must go on, and the Reba McEntire and Darius Rucker-hosted ceremony went ahead as planned, honoring some of the biggest names in country music.

The 2020 CMA Awards are set to recognize country’s biggest and best music of the past year. The awards are right around the corner with many heated battles, so let’s take a look at 2020’s album and song categories. Some of them are easier to forecast than others.
Album of the Year
Luke Combs is probably winning this for “What You See is What You Get.” He won this award at the ACMs earlier this fall, he’s had a big year (the album just returned to number-one on the Billboard 200 51 weeks after its release thanks to a deluxe reissue with additional songs). I further discussed his 2020 supremacy a couple of times here. The women in this category could upset (Miranda Lambert‘s “Wildcard” and Ashley McBryde‘s “Never Will” were critically acclaimed), but it’s probably Combs.

The initial performance lineup for November’s CMA Awards telecast includes Gabby Barrett and Charlie Puth doing a live duet of her crossover hit “I Hope,” presumably for the first time in the same room, since Puth put together the pop radio remix that features his voice after the pandemic began.
But “in the same room” is the operative term and selling point for this year’s CMAs, with producers revealing Thursday morning that this year’s show on ABC would “bring country music’s biggest stars together safely, in one room, for the first time this year.” That emphasis is meant to distinguish the Country Music Association’s telecast from the glut of other recent country awards shows. The long-delayed ACM Awards in September offered a mixture of live and mostly pre-recorded performances from three different Nashville locales, and this month’s CMT Music Awards followed a similarly spread-out,...
