IF (2024)
Honest Review: They just love tugging the heart strings
Ever since Toy Story 3 it seems to be popular to try and get the tear ducts going in the audience and this has its moments.
The child at the centre of the story has lost her mum, it shows footage and speaks about how the stories you make yourselves are important. The dad is also having some form of heart surgery and there's the mention of things you leave behind when you grow up (aka Toy Story 3 and the toys). In this case the girl originally desperately wants to be known as an adult but she's 12. The message of the film is that imaginary friends can't be seen when people stop believing (i.e. Grow up). At the end she realises she wants to be a believer.
Yes I shed a tear or two, for parents lost and also because I still never want to grow up.
Madame Web (2024)
Honest Review: Not as bad as the trolls make out
I've just come back from the cinema to see Madame Web in Imax 2D. I generally appreciate most films, some are better than others but they all have a script which is acted out and hopefully good enough for viewers to follow along. I read reviews beforehand and you can see the ratings which seem to make this one of the worst films ever however I always make up my own mind.
I'm not one for pandering too much to the teens, as it can be somewhat annoying and there is some of that here which may be intentional. The characters are decent here and there is some good and relevant action which comes to a climax at the end. The CGI is pretty good although I still think there's work to be done on rapid movement (running, jumping) as it never seems natural. The story played out well and I followed it with interest for the full just short of 2 hours. I wasn't aware of the story beforehand so I can't say if it was obsessively true to the comics or not, but it was a decent story.
There has been talk of it being a film to just set up a sequel (that now may not be made for some time) but it worked for me as a standalone. I enjoyed it and recommended it to my daughter. Others may be far more critical but every Marvel themed film can't be Infinity War.
There used to be a forum posting facility on here for each film which was great however every film including the likes of The Green Mile had one post 'worst film ever' and 'half the audience walked out' which I have never seen in decades of seeing all types of films. This may be your 'worst film ever' or you may enjoy it but it's your opinion and you'll never know unless you give it a watch.
Wonka (2023)
Honest review: They got this one right
So I was very apprehensive about this film having loved the book and original film, how can you expand upon that timeline to that quality? Given my love for the original I should have been excited to see another Wonka story buy too often filmmakers add a younger version of a character just for the younger appeal and decent scripts are often missing. I'd previously seen Dune and Timothée Chalamet played a decent role in that, so I was hoping it would be watchable at least.
I went to see it over the New Year whilst on a family holiday and we all absolutely loved it. It has enough nods to the original film, and Chalamet must have studied Gene Wilder as he shows charm. There are some great actors in the cast who all play a great part, a lot of them British.
You can't help but shed a tear at the end, I'm sure many were as the culmination of a nice end to the story and a familiar tune kicked in. We saw this again recently and it had the same effect both times!
Poor Things (2023)
Honest review: If you like your films quirky you'll love it!
I went to see this with my wife, who does prefer her films to be straightforward and so I was apprehensive as to her opinion after reading a few non-spoiler reviews. She actually appreciated the acting of Emma Stone who deserves to win many awards for this, and also Willem Defoe who is an ideal typecast for the Doctor although he does remind me of Norman Osborn from Spiderman. I also liked Mark Ruffalo as the cad. All actors portrayed the feel of the film which has a sort of steampunk look at times. Emma Stone has the hardest job as Bella Baxter and she pulls off a blinder. This can be uncomfortable at times but the way her life plays out as someone with no baggage is superb. I love the way she sees life for what it is and her naivety is something we should all embrace.
Coherence (2013)
Honest review: This is classic sci-fi
I came across this film some years ago and it was one of those that I forgot the title but remembered the film, at the time recommending it to those friends who like an inventive multi-dimensional story. On holiday a few months ago I saw this on one of the streaming services and watched it again. This film will go down for me as a sci-fi classic, just like Moon did with minimal cast and a great quirky story that could have easily have been an episode of Black Mirror, or further back The Twilight Zone. Without giving the plot away this is one of those films where you can't tell good from bad, or whether there are and good or bad at all. I'm already looking forward to watching this again.
The Beekeeper (2024)
Honest review: Much better than I expected
Don't you just love it when the really bad guys who you instantly hate get their asses kicked? It runs through the whole of this film with a modern and very relevant antagonist. They storyline of course is less believable in places but if you just want a good old fashioned action flick like some suggest a throwback to those in the 80's and 90's here it is. Films are meant to bring emotion, and I wouldn't be surprised if everyone in the cinema gave a little virtual fist pump as each odious baddie got their comeuppance.
I titled this as 'much better than I expected' because the trailer came across like some sort of parody action film, yes the bee reference is a little comical at times but I think it fits, and overall if action is your thing like John Wick you'll leave the cinema with a sile on your face.
Napoleon (2023)
Honest review: I really enjoyed it
I watched this yesterday and came home telling my family it was a really good film. I then went on here to look at the reviews and was amazed at how much hate there was for it. I knew of Napoleon but not all the detail so I actually enjoyed this as a film rather than specific historical accuracy. I liked the way the timeline was portrayed and the acting was, to me very good. There is quite a lot of focus around Josephine which adds extra interest to the film. The fight scenes were epic. Phoenix is ideal in my opinion as Napoleon and played an excellent part, everyone has moments of confidence and insecurity so I have no issue with that. I came home wanting to explore the history further and so if there were inaccuracies it didn't detect from a thoroughly enjoyable film. I'd say 8.5 and will definitely watch this again.
Night Swim (2024)
Honest review it wasn't that bad
I'm not sure what people expect from the movies, it's so easy to give a bad review with nothing constructive, no movies are totally poor and even the best ones have their flaws. This is my first review and I'll try and be constructive.
I wanted to see this as Blumhouse has a decent reputation. The idea is a good one and there is enough explanation as a backstory. I didn't find many holes in the plot, yes questions would surely be asked when people die in the same location but I'll leave that to Colombo but in general I liked the story and the characters. The build up was pretty good possibly the ending could have done with a bit of work. The jump scares were predictable but then again horror fans would always expect this. I've seen better movies and I've seen worse, Overall I enjoyed it and would watch it again. Don't listen to the haters it's a decent flick.
